Since I tried Blue Chip picks, I don't use anything other than their TD 35 ot TD 40 with bevel. Try those if you haven't! They are expensive, but the grip is amazing, and they reportedly last for years
When I'm recording and want a lighter or heavier attack I May choose a different pic, but otherwise I generally use the same ones. A tortex pick between 60 and 80 mm 76 mm I think is my preference it just works with the way I play
Yea, I haven't seen much talk about picks here on RUclips. Anyway, yea I am comfortable with Fender mediums. My Father used Fender mediums. I also always have some Dunlop .73 Max-Grip picks on hand. MusicLilly always sends a real heavy pick with their orders. So I tried that one and you can really dig in with a heavy pick. I like to noodle with that every now and then. Thin picks are good, as you pointed out, if you're playing rhythm. Medium, I agree, are best all around. Well, for me anyway. Best regards, Jake. John...
I like the .94mm & 1mm Jim Dunlop USA Nylons most of the time. What's better is modding them with my belt sander to a jazz 3 profile. Perfect for my grip, tunings and string tensions I use. something about then flex of the nylons with the tighter point just does it for me. Those Fender mediums are legendary, if that's all there was on this planet we wouldn't be bad off at all. :)
With my strat with 9-42 gauge strings I find that certain heavy picks don't allow the string to vibrate freely. Which leads to less sustain because it chokes the string vibration. Medium picks is the best of both worlds. Btw Neal Schon has always used a medium pick. There is only one company that still makes a .88mm which would be D'Andrea. They are the same company that makes Fender picks. But they are no way the same in comparison although made at the same factory.
It's easier to strum funk with a thicker pick that's good for lead than it is to play lead with a thinner pick that's good for fast strumming. So I use a pick that's just over 1mm thick.
