Nas signed TWO horrible Sony deals back to back. Fortunately for Nas the homie Hov signed him to Roc A Fella and he’s managed by Roc Nation now and they open doors for people. I’m happy Nas is on the Forbes list because Kelis is a very expensive mistake.

The thing about Ether is when that record dropped it was hands down the number 1 requested song on the radio in NYC for a couple of weeks. The revisionist history on this comment board by Jay stans is absolutely ridiculous. Now it's about this imaginary "war" that Jay supposedly won. It's pathetic actually.
Facts !
@Kurt Jovain in an interview with Angie Martinez on Hot 97.
@Kurt Jovain ok...whatever you say. Ignore reality cuz you're a stan. Cool
@Kurt Jovain LOL...you accuse Nas of not making sense but you're the one who's not making sense. Nas was born in '73 so he was 15 in '88. Second, those verses aren't related to each other. He said Jay was calling him when he never gave him his number cuz he was sweating him and his style THEN he says Jay was getting chased to his building back then which is accurate. Jay grew up getting bullied until he started selling drugs later. Jay stans always claim that Takeover was more factual when all Jay did was give his opinion on Nas' career..."one hot album every ten years average?" WTF is that? It Was Written is universally considered a classic and it went 3X platinum. It was one of the 90s top albums. Plus, MC Serch is on record saying Nas got publishing money for Jay sampling his voice on Dead Presidents...so that was a lie too that Jay said. He lost...accept it cuz everyone else has, including Jay himself.

Nas won period. Their business ventures or other dealings outside of making a song has nothing to do with their lyricism. I get annoyed when people say Nas won the battle but Jay won the war. The whole battle and war was over WHO was the better rapper and Nas won, period.
And if we mentioned anything out of lyrics let's talk about how Jay-Z was a Nas groupie, and obsessed with Nas that he rapped like him, sampled him, got rejected by him and because Jay-Z was hurt by this even screwed his baby mother to feel more like him. I definitely agree with your war and battle commentary. I just hate that we compare Jay Z & Nas because to me they are completely different artists and people. Nas has a different love for music (due to his dad’s influence) and is held to a higher standard. When Nas puts out commercial songs, it’s the “Nas fell off”. But at the same time, Jay Z does several commercial songs and everyone loves it. Nas wasn’t trying to play the political games, hence why he hasn’t won a Grammy.
Jay Z not getting signed to a label was his biggest blessing. He learned ownership, which made him the mogul he is today. Because of Jay-Z’s come-up story and current success, he gets more respect from all generations. When people talk about Jay Z, it’s beyond the music. Nas put out a “grown man” album (Life is Good) in 2012 and it was phenomenal, but rarely mentioned. But when Jay Z did it (4:44), everyone loved it. Nas is just ahead of his time and paved the way lyrically.

Nas won the battle, Jay Z won the war
FirstClassEnt1000 you’re on the street, you’re out boxing your opponent the whole fight and then he body slams you. The crowd goes, “Ooooooooooo”, collectively. You lost that street fight. Nas out-boxed Hov in Ether but then came Carmen, and JayZ and Carmen, and Carmen talking about JayZ ; then Carmen comparing Nas to JayZ, then suddenly Ether seemed silly. The crowd went “ooooooooo” upon hearing Carmen. Then JayZ became a boss at Def Jam and out-ranked Nas; then JayZ saw a billion and Ether got even weaker. Hov won the war.
@@TasetiMuhammadan70x70 I always say this 💯

@Michaell Alexander Yeah, you're right
I had no idea rappers spent so much time up at radio stations 💀. This is amazing to me. Not just these 2 guys, but watching this series, realizing how NY stations were really a stomping ground.
hot 97 in the 2000s was CRAZZYYY
💯 Facts, but of course this was all pre-social media, RUclips etc. days! These were the days when radio play could make or break you and records were physically sold which called for 💰 & lots of effort put in by the artist and their team. This is 1 reason why J sold more than Nas who even mentioned it several times throughout the documentary (J payed 4 plays and favor at the stations). You can basically do everything from your home today if you wanted to. Different times, different rules to the game.
That was the only Major social media back then the radio stations etc
That’s how they got their voice out back then people didn’t have Tim tok or Bluetooth speakers they would listen to the radio ..
@@bendahova6196 🤣😃🤣 I'm too am the radio generation. But my local stations featured local guest, unless a concert was in town. Guess I should've lived in NY or LA for the access.

@@PlayerOneUp that's the same mistake Jay z made, thinking nas was washed up and thought he could try and diss nas and mobb deep in one song. First of all you're going to go at the legends you better spend the time and make tracks for each individual artist, second if you're going to go at NAS you got to get deep and philosophical cuz you know Nas when motivated can drop some of the most potent lyrics you will hear in hip hop and 3rd looking back at it and what I felt when I heard those songs was that's the Takeover just seemed like some typical Studio diss track Nas Ether just felt straight Gully... that's my two cents

Nas was the real King of NY back then...Illmatic was miles ahead of Ready To Die
while i agree with this, ready to die had a much better commercial performance than nas, and and biggie was always cranking out amazing raps... nas was this new guy who no one knew, and then 3 years later he started releasing sub par albums causing people to look at illmatic as a fluke... not only that but biggie was much more vital in the beef and people overall bumped biggie and respected him more
