In this video James Knight, Founder of Gentle Somatic Yoga®, offers 3 simple and effective Somatic Movement Flows® to help you dissolve tension and stress in your neck, shoulders, and upper back.
James also shares with the viewer why this method of movement education works and what makes this so unique compared to other styles of popular Yoga.
Here are some of the topics that James explains in detail:
    • Why GSY doesn't focus on stretching.... instead you'll learn to pandiculate (repattern your muscles!)
    • Sensory Motor Amnesia vs. Sensory Motor Awakening
    • Brain-to-muscle reeducation. Strengthen neuropathways and/or build new ones.
    • Interoception: internal felt sensation
    • Learning to make nourishing decisions with your body (soma) that leads to optimal states of health
    • Intuitive movement: move in a way that feels good to your unique Soma
    • The brain learns through contrast
    • Soma Scans: Witness consciousness
    • Tips and guidelines for a successful practice and for long-term results
    • The healing power of meditation and visualization • For a FREE 30-minute Gentle Somatic Yoga® daily self-care home practice video: 30-minute-home...

Being part of his team and having the honor of reading many all of these comments, testimonials, and long-standing connections alongside James is heart warming. He just led a training in Tucson, Arizona and is getting ready to jump into this weekend's Deep Dive before hosting another retreat next weekend -- so I will pass this love blast forward to him until he has time to connect with you directly.

Hi James. I am a qigong teacher and because I am quite old, I am teaching more seniors with issues. When this happens I try to search through somatic exercises and I find so much correlation with the approach of Chinese exercise. Particularly the exercises designed for older people ("longevity and immortality" exercises). I find that I have to find a somatic approach to even begin with many people because they are so out of touch with their bodies and I often adapt them slightly because I'm seeing them through the frame of my own experience. I really like your approach and hope one day to be able to return to the US and take some of your classes. I know that Feldenkrais was a martial artist and his writings seem to parallel much of what I've learned from my teachers and have experienced myself.

I have done this flow twice and both times I’ve cried throughout. In the final Savasana my shoulder has started to shake uncontrollably and I’ve had more tears which dissipate after about five minutes. I’m feeling like this is really getting where it needs to! Thank you so much James.

Thank you for this treasure video. I always wandered about that tension in shoulder and hoped to know how to heal it. I found the remarkable practical answer here. But is not it from how we sleep to the sides rather than chronic stress?

    • @gentlesomaticyoga
      @gentlesomaticyoga  2 года назад +1

You are so welcome! I'm glad it was helpful. :)
Most likely it is not from sleeping. The tension/tightness probably comes from a pattern of holding stress from daily habits, past injuries, surgeries?, sports - where you use the same muscle groups over and over again. In this method, and in Hanna Somatic Education, we call this Sensory Motor Amnesia.

Hi Elaine, thank you for the feedback. We are sorry to hear that these particular SMFs do not resonate with you in your current state. Fibromyalgia can be very tricky and we deeply empathize with your journey. The best way to incorporate Gentle Somatic Yoga into your routine will be to get a customized practice with James directly. These videos are not a one-size-fits-all, rather an invitation to consider movements like these. Of course, it is imperative to do as you have done and listen to your intuition and your soma's response. If you would like to set up a session with James, you can learn more about that here:
