Hey, Giles is back! What I love about your videos, Giles, is that you actually go for a hike to get to your campsite. You're not just walking a short distance to camp for a few hours. It's like a proper day-out and overnighter. Not just a wee saunter in the park.
That was epic sir. Minimal kit and what an adventure. Some fellow RUclipsrs of yours use trucks to get within 50 yds of the camp , fancy expensive tents , stoves , inflatable mattress and four season bags etc etc . How remarkably refreshing to see what can be achieved at the other end of the scale. Thank you and happy new year sir.
Thanks for watching and that really great comment Frazel. Yeah, a lot can be done with a few bits of basic reliable kit - but comfort should not be expected 😂🤣. Cheers 😊👍
Yes agreed, but not all of us RUclipsrs are made of 100% organic moral fibre as Giles is. Unless you've done it, you don't know how difficult it is and I've lost a few Mates doing Wild Camping overnighters in Tesco and other supermarkets. 😏🤦🤷😂
No hesitation in saying yet again Giles, first class effort in the camp and indeed the making of the video. You take time to have a good ramble, make a simple but honest camp, with all the hard and time consuming efforts it takes to make a from bare bones fire, and being honest about it as well . First class in every respect. It's about time, your channel got some more coverage, for the honest and down to earth you show others, that you don't need all the Gucci gear. Thank you Giles. Iechyd da from Wales
Thanks very much Taff - really appreciate you watching and making such a great comment. Yeah, it’s good fun trying to reduce things down to the very basics. Cheers to you too my Friend 🍻🥃🥃🍷🍷👍
That looked like a wet night out Giles but it's all good fun isn't it mate you put myself and Roney to shame the amount of kit we take on a night out but we are very comfortable and warm 🤣🤣 it's hard work keeping the fire going in wet conditions we had a hard time ourselves constantly splitting wood catch you on the next one atvb Jimmy 😎😎👍👍
Cheers Jimmy. Always appreciated Mate. Yeah, I go lightweight - it makes for easier hiking and scrambling. But pay the price in lack of comfort at camp alright 🫤 Yeah, all the wet weather we’ve had makes the fire hard work.🔥 Cheers Bud take care 😊👍
Hi Giles, I'm playing catch up with the vids at the mo!! Looked like a challenging yet rewarding camp. Good on you for persevering through that awful weather. It can certainly be a pain keeping the fire ticking over in those conditions and sourcing dry sticks. Even the dead standing wood is pretty sodden at the mo. Nice bit of grub though with the kebabs. I was just thinking about your comments in the morning. If you pitch the Palatka slightly lower, would that enable you to peg it out wider and enable you to lay across the fire. I shall have to get out for another camp in mine soon. Thanks as always for sharing 👍
Thanks very much Gavin. Yeah, it’s been so wet everything is saturated. Beginning to dry out a bit now but freezing cold instead !!! Yeah, you’re right - could splay-out the Palatka wider to lay across the fire. Cheers Bud - keep warm and dry😊👍
It's really nice to see someone with a channel that is not a showcase for and demonstration of high -end equipment. Any one could afford your style of camping. As they say, " The more you know, the less you carry ". 👍👍
I Say Jolly splendid Giles Old Chap! Not easy that persistent rain and I thought you did a marvellous job with that fire... It would have taken me 10 wax pads and some! The Zeltbahn is a decent piece of kit and loving the walk off in it as a poncho. Jerry did make some good gear.. But Mum's the word, walls have ears and all that Jazz! It was great to get a shot from inside of the fire and see the kebabs cooking. Enjoyed immensly Old Chap! Thanks awfully ♨️ Steve
Thanks awfully Steve. Jolly nice of you to intercept this transmission. Jolly well rained cats and dogs - really had to keep up my best stiff upper lip Old Bean. Yes, have to admit Jerry certainly knows how to kit out his Boys alright. Thanks for your kind words Old Chap. HURRAH !!!
.... Couldn't believe you had no jacket on in January! .... You Southern types have it easy!😂 Nice to see you out again, ..( I'm off on a wee 48hr jaunt to Bute 1st ferry in the morning 😊).... All the best for '23 mate, ... I'd bet I'm not alone in thinking that you have the most genuine outdoors channel on RUclips, ... please keep it up!👍
Thanks very much as always Tannahill. And wishing you a great trip to Bute today. Hoping you get some reasonable weather - still no let up in wind and rain down South. Keep warm and dry 🥃🥃😊👍
Great video as usual. I am flying to The U.K. immediately to give you a lesson on The Trucker's Hitch. I figure I'll be saving you about two hours of time with each shelter set up. Maybe I'm exaggerating a little. Watching you run that line around that tree about 100x's was painful. You show the viewer, better than the other Bushcrafters in UK, what a beautiful place The UK actually is! Much appreciated and I can't wait for your next adventure. Be well!
Thanks you kindly Floyd - appreciate you watching and commenting. Yeah, what a brilliant knot the Truckers Hitch is. I still use it camping and also those ‘Niteze’ jamming cleats which do the same thing in a much more convenient way. But I did a video demonstrating tarp setups and I wanted to keep the knots really, really simple. So I try to use the ‘No knot’ for as much as possible ! This has the advantage that, even in damp swollen natural fibre line, it is still easy to release the line when breaking camp. In such conditions and after being under tension all night - other knots can seize up ! Thx again for your kind words - take care 😊👍
Great to have you back, Giles! Many of us will know the challenges that incessant rain brings on a camp, but it was great to see you battle through with your old school gear. It's always gives me a lift to see you have a new video out - my camping buddies do the tidying away of the fire dance to your music in your honour at every camp! 🔥
Thanks very much - really appreciate you watching and commenting. Ha ha !!! Would love to see yous guys tidying up the fire - the LNT stomp !!! 😂🤣😂 …. 🔥🕺 Cheers my Friend 👍
Hi Giles. This video just popped up on my iPad and I just had to watch again. Still a good one. Here’s hoping you and yours are well and happy. 🍺Steven
I enjoyed that one too, Giles. As they say; if it ain’t raining, it ain’t training! Tough old fire time when the rain came down but you showed it who’s boss 😉👍🏼 Nice to see you back out good sir!
Thanks as always Tim. Yeah, bit challenging at times that one - but I suppose that’s what keeps it interesting/fun (apart from the cold feet 🦶🥶 ….😂🤣😂🤣). Thx again for the support Buddy 🍻
@@BourneOutside thx Mate. Yeah, I need to work on the feet situation !!! I try and keep the fire as minimal as possible really - but it’s surprising how a small fire can warm up a small canvas tarp quite nicely 😊👍 Hope all good with you Buddy
@@gilesbinyon Agrre with you how powerful a small fire can be. Especially in those bowls. I bought one because of you 😁 All good this end thank you, Giles. Hope the same for you too 😉👍🏼
@@BourneOutside yeah, good thx Mate. Hope you enjoy the Fire Bowl. And I like the way they help protect the ground - can be raised on some rocks 👍. Hoping you can stay dry in this weather Tim - take care 😊👍
Fine Art minimal Wildcamp Giles. Kebabs looked very tasty :) It's nice how heat intensifies the flavours. A damp camp but atleast it remained fairly mild. Happy New Year Sandy
Thanks very much Sandy. Really appreciate your support and kind words. A happy new year to you and all yours too. And sending love and best wishes to your Grandson - the young will inherit the earth we have left them 🫤 We owe them a massive apology I reckon !!! Take care my Friend 👍
Hi Giles, another great video pal, what rotten weather, that wood must have been soaked to have to use 3 of your magic pads lol, loved the cooking too, thought it would of been your stew on such a damp night. Great to see you out again pal stay safe.
Cheers Nick much appreciated and thanks for watching. Ha !!! You’re right - it would have been the perfect night for the old veg stew !!! 😂🤣😂🤣 Yeah, 3 wax pads - things were bad 💧💧💧Cheers Buddy 😊👍
A bit of a challenging one, my good man. And the fickle lady fire made you work for her warmth. But as per usual you managed to pull it off while making it look easy. Again, thanks for letting us tag along. Very inspiring stuff, Giles👍 Hope you & yours had a lovely Christmas. Looking forward to what 2023 has to offer.
THANK YOU FOR beginning the New Year with a fine video. We can see a basic winter camp 'warts and all': wet wood, no heavy knife for batoning, and water drops in the shelter. The supper was a good one: colorful vegatible medley and steamy grain to sustain one and to lift the spirits a bit!
"Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, its about to dance in the rain" and you Giles sum the old saying up so well. Bravo my friend, Bravo!! What a sodden trip that was, your endless optimism and resilience always entertains. ATVB2U .Scott Somerset
Hi Giles. Good to see you out . Really don't know how you do it with such minimal equipment. But love to watch . Was out a few knights ago in a tent with full kit. Still can't get my feet warm . Regards
A drawback to the plowpoint shelter is the cold spot in the point. Using a tarp to make a Baker Leanto configuration helps IF one has a large enough tarp to shelter the full length of a prone body.
Giles! Great 👍 to see you again, My Friend. Been waiting anxiously for a new video. Just remember though, you do what you can, when you can. I’m a patient person. Nice hike. I like that, but you had some steep hills there. And, some gorgeous views. Does look 👀 a little damp over there, and you had kind of a soggy camp, but you got right to it and made it work. Love your “old school” approach, but I always worry about you staying warm. I have a suggestion, that you may already considered. If you put one or two 🖐 hand warmer packets in each of those extra socks you put on, it would help keep your feet warm. Yes, I know they are not “old school”, just a thought. I use them in my mittens when I work outside in winter 🥶. Seems I can never keep my fingers warm. Well, Giles, it was great to see you again. Yours are among my favorite videos. Take care, and stay warm 😉
Thanks very much as always Steven. And great to hear from you. Yeah, that camp was a bit of a challenge against the weather !!! Yeah, that’s a good idea of yours about the hand warmers and others have mentioned similar - I do consider all these ideas - thanks. Appreciate your support - keep safe and wishing you warmer fingers my Friend 😊👍
My hat off to you. I in joyed your adventure thank you for sharing it. Plus you did it on foot 🦶. Your bush craft is beautiful too see. This is one of the best wild camping I’ve seen on here.
Hello again, Giles, I hope you've had a peaceful yuletide. Thanks for another great video. This one was quite the adventure! I'm still amazed that you can fit everything into that size of pack; food, shelter, sleeping and cooking gear, I don't know how you do it. Some great views again! When I climb a trig point it always feels good that I'm the highest person above sea level for quite a few miles around. I love the different greens you can see in things like the mosses and lichens. Stunningly beautiful and even therapeutic hues. The weather was good to test your gear which, although you had some rain coming through a bit was generally holding out well. Your fire seemed warm when it got going, though as you say it was hard to keep going with the damp wood. Tht sounds like a familiar story! It was nice that you had some hardwood to use, as I find around here it's difficult to find decent hardwood locations. I remember going out once with lots of plans of things I was going to do on the outing, but when it came to it so much time was spent processing firewood and tending the fire to keep warm, cook, etc. that there was actually no time for anything else at all. It was a perpetual cycle of processing, stacking by the fire to dry and warm, then burning, that kept me busy the whole time. I must say, I'm always surprised how thick your twigs are when you light your fires, but your waxed disks usually get them going without much bother. I generally find sleeping sideways across the entrance more agreeable as I hate the thought of my feet and legs getting cold at the end away from the fire. Sideways-on, I can roll over and so swap the side that is facing the fire. I wish you well for another year, Giles. I hope you keep up the videos, it's always a joy to watch your travels and sights. Take care my friend, and bye for now.
Really great to get your comments Adrian - thanks so much for watching the videos. Yeah, I expect you get challenging damp conditions a lot more often being much further west. It can make working with fire rather difficult as you say. I think I fit as much stuff ‘on’ that little pack as ‘in’ it 🤣😂🤣😂 Yeah, I’m deffo gonna try lying sideways onto the fire. As you say it’s possible to keep both sides of your body warm every time you turn over - a bit like a vegetable kebab !!! 😂🤣😂🤣 Seriously, it does sound more comfortable tho. I hope you and yours had a great Xmas and wishing yous a fantastic 2023 my Friend. Keep warm and dry 😊👍
Blimey, that was a bit damp Giles! I think three wax discs in those conditions is pretty good - I'd probably have needed double figures.. I suppose this is where a small/'legal' knife doesn’t really cut it (no pun intended 😀), when you could do with battening some wood to get at the dry stuff. Thanks for keeping the videos coming, here's to a 2023 of great adventures!
I've just found your channel and have watched nearly all of your videos over the past 2 days. I'm finding your approach to camping really inspirational, and I'd love to see you do a video giving a breakdown of your gear and techniques. You've got a lot to teach. I feel like your "style" of camping for want of a better word is a lot closer to how our ancestors over hundreds of years would have done things, and I really respect that despite how uncomfortable it may seem to me! Thanks for the videos ✌🏻
Thanks very much Sam. Really appreciate you watching and that wonderful comment. I do try and illustrate what I’m doing in the videos. And I did a video a while ago specifically on shelter set ups. I may have to do another on kit - which fortunately is very minimal 😊👍
Only just got around to watching this Giles and really glad I did. I enjoyed it no end. It’s alot different to what I do but I love it all the same, and it’s so much more interesting, exciting and engaged with a challenge than a lot of the fayre on RUclips. The night of the 3 wax discs!🤠👍🏼
Thanks very much Chris. Really appreciate you watching and those kind words. Ha ha !!! That could become a movie ‘The Night of the 3 Wax Discs’ 😂🤣😂🤣 Cheers 😊👍
Great video Giles! Well done on enduring that challenging night in the rain and wind so we could all watch along! You seem to have a knack for finding spots where you won't be disturbed. I only seem to manage that by setting up once it's more or less dark already.
Thanks very much John. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Yeah, the weather has been challenging these last weeks alright - you faced similar battles in your recent videos. Coupled with the long nights . ….oh boy !!! Cheers 🍷🍷👍
Another great video, making the very best of some damp and dull conditions . Always a pleasure to watch your obvious joy at being outside in the countryside.
Hello Giles! Great new video. The scenery looked fantastic. A bit of a difference in the weather compared to the 40 degrees of the summer. You did very well to keep the fire going while making the kebabs. It couldn't have been easy trying to light the wax disk with the Ferro rod either. Wishing you a great 2023. Iain.
Thanks very much Iain - appreciated as always 😊. Yeah, this was a bit of a contrast alright !!! Luckily the kebabs worked out okay. ATB to you and yours for 2023 and thx again 👍
WOT NO PUB with a Cosy Log Fire and a Pint or two as your arm is twisted! 😉😜 Full respect to you for sticking that out in an open wet and windy shelter. No idea why the Zeltbahn started leaking. You usually have Coconut oil with you and I was thinking about smearing some on the topside of the wettest part. I'm out everyday in the local ULU with the dogs and one thing I detest is MUD - it sticks to my boots and raises me off the ground a few centimetres, but nothing I can do about it except try to detour around it where possible. I was thinking perhaps you ought to seek out and tryout one of the older Military Canvas BIVI bags. This would allow you to raise the Zeltbahn off the ground giving more room and the BIVI would stop the draughts getting at you. I doubt there would be too much weight difference between one canvas BIVI and one Zeltbahn. Nice to see you wearing it too and straight away one can see it is a Zeltbahn and not a Plash Palatka as the latter only has one ARM HOLE. 😉 Keep dry and safe my friend and not long before that 5k Subs is reached and well earned it is too.
Ha ha !!! Glad that country Pub image didn’t cross my mind that night …. it would have meant camp over and retire to a warm Pint deffo 😂🤣😂🤣 Yeah, I got hold of an old style canvas bivi - which is actually designed as a sleeping bag cover (think it’s called an M1945 cover). Only shower proof but nice lightweight canvas. Comes up pretty massive - still trying to figure how to incorporate it in a set up. Yeah, mud can be a real pain - and cleaning kit afterwards is too ! Always think of the helpful info you gave me on these old Warsaw Pact bits of kit - thx. Keep safe and well and dry my Friend - and as always thanks for your support 👍😊
Hello Giles , I can't beleive that the shelter was leaking at one point , I am sure that you Wax it often , Be Well my Friend , Strength , Honour and Respect .
Thank you kindly Bob - really appreciate you watching and commenting. Yeah, couldn’t work out the leak - which seemed to stop after sometime …. 🤔 Cheers my Friend 😊👍
Nice to see you out and about again giles brilliant video nice viwe to see the hope didn't get to cold I bet you wife get worried about you in this cold weather
Thanks very much as always Keith - really appreciate you watching Mate. My wife was away with family - she didn’t realise how bad the weather was !!! 🤣😂🤣😂. Thx again - keep safe and warm Bud 😊👍
Great video of perseverance. One simple suggestion: move the wind reflector back 3 inches and put wet wood in between it and your fire to dry. Each time you add those bits to the fire, move more of the wet wood to dry. It may make it easier to keep your fire going. Cheers!
Thanks very much Black Sheep - appreciate you watching. And yeah, that’s a good idea. I was trying to do something similar on the night but with varying success. Cheers 😊👍
Great camp that Giles. Those views were certainly awesome, and that gnarly old wood you camped in look full of character. Looked a damp one mate . I know how tricky it can be getting a fire going for just a short time in that weather can be . So keeping it going all night must be even more tricky . Still don't know how you don't even use a blanket. Takecare good Sir 🏕👍
Thanks very much Mark. Always appreciate your support Buddy. Yeah, was slightly challenging but managed it in the end. But minimal kit deffo comes with a level of discomfort 😂 Keep safe and dry Mate 😊👍
Beautiful wintery hills but miserable rain. Props to you for your damp persistence in these conditions. At our Forest school, because we cook the kids a hot lunch over the fire, I prep and tie up little starter bundles of tinder and kindling and tuck a couple away in my kit to bring on wet days. They don't weigh much or take up much space and that way we know the fire will light!
Thanks very much as always Catherine. Yeah, this one was a bit of a damp struggle 💧!!! Sounds like a great idea you have to bring along some dry kindling. Especially important for the children to get a hot meal and on a wet day too. Keep up the good work ! Thx again. Keep warm and dry 😊
Happy New Year to you! Nothing worse than camping in miserable weather but you made the best of it and kept your spirits up! A little bit of whiskey would have helped a bit. But you tought it out, bravo! I'm a fairly new subscriber but have real enjoyed all of your videos! ATB Sam Adler from Vietnam
Thanks very much Sam. That’s a great comment and thank you for watching these videos. Yeah, I think you’re right … it would have been easier with a drop of ….🥃🥃🥃….. 😊👍
Hi Giles, Great video, really enjoyed it. All credit to you filming in what looked like really bad weather. Look forward to your next one (hope the weather is better for you).
Good Evening Giles .. 👍👍👍 .. it's nice seeing you again and hearing your signature 'ditty'. From the scraping of arthritic fiddles to the catchy mis-stepping, almost tripping jangle of the banjo. Always a pleasure and a 'deliverance' 😏 from the city to the outdoors 😊. Yes, rain can often stop play, but in your case and this instance .. nope. Those waxed cotton makeup pads work like a charm .. use them too. To fit into my tin, I trim the edges. The 'twirl' cut off that results also helps in getting reluctant burns going. I've said before, 'Simplicity has a Beauty of it's own' and watching your posts proves it .. and encourages one to follow suit. Thanks for sharing my friend and I look forward to the next. Take care .. Tommy
Thanks very much Tommy. Appreciate you watching as always my Friend. Yeah, those waxed discs are brilliant - and I also trim mine down to fit into a 2 inch diameter tin !!! Small but they still do the job !!! Thank you for those kind words Tommy. I hope you have been able to get out into the forest. And, moreover, avoiding those Grannies !!! Take care Buddy 🍻👍
Happy New Year Giles, thanks as always for showing us the majestic beauty of the South Downs, and also for reminding me of that brilliant summer solstice video. I chuckled to myself at the end shot, imagining the reactions of any early riser seeing your hooded and capped figure moving across the Downs as your return home.👻 😱 Thanks as always Giles.
Thank you ultrarunner. Appreciated as always my Friend. Ha ha !!! Yeah, I had to hike beside a road for a few miles and I reckon those early morning drivers nearly had a heart attack when they saw the ‘grim reaper’ in the roadway 😂🤣😂🤣 Wishing you the best for 2023 👍
Thanks for the nice video and the effort. You must have walked many miles back and forth to collect your camera after each video clip. And as always, watching you just snuggling down with no bag or blanket had me shivering. All the best for the New Year. 👍
Yay!! You’re back! It’s nearly spring, and you know what that means…. Plotting camping trips with the grandson! If she’s being nice we may take his mum! X
Ha ha !!! Yeah, hoping you get some quality camps with your little fella - and bring his Mum along too, I’m sure she’ll be well behaved 😂🤣😂🤣 Thanks so much as always for watching and commenting. Roll on spring !!! ☀️👍
@@gilesbinyon we’re going to the local park tomor. The one where I grew up pretty much in! I’ve been given specific instructions to stay in the fenced area of swings and slides…. And NOT to go into the wooded bits and look for zombies/wolves/purple worms and making dens. Would I do such a thing????? Of course! Silly mummy. I doubt she’ll go camping with us. There won’t be any electricity for her to use her straighteners! Hehe!! Xx
Thanks very much Mark - appreciated. Yeah, can’t beat a good yomp through the countryside (despite the weather 😂🤣). Cheers (enjoying your vids by the way) 😊👍
We have similar weather, it always seems to rain whatever weekend we find to get away. But wow, that tiny tarp! Too small for me, brutal! Canvas will swell when wet, sealing off the leaks, maybe that’s what was going on. I salute you!
Thanks very much, appreciate the kind thoughts. Yeah, I’ve been out quite a bit luckily - a lot of family camping this year. I stopped doing the filming when I realised that I couldn’t really justify the time it takes to do the editing. So I’m just not sure when I’ll be filming again. Anyway, I hope this finds you well and able to get out as much as possible also. Thanks and Cheers ⛺️🌲😊👍
awesome video as always, I'm slowly taking a leaf out of your book with minimal gear, still use the odd synthetics poncho and sleeping bag for winter I'll brave the half lavvu and blanket in summer and aiming to get out walking more,, look forward to your next video,
As always really nice video Giles! I agree with your followers you need more appreciation, instead of all those wannabe bushcraft and so called specialist in survival with high tec gears. Really nice to see what you can make with some old school gear. Keep up the good work, don’t stop walking🤘 Peace from Sweden
Missing you, man. You have been an inspiration to me, setting an aspirational level that isn't easy to equal living in Norway like I do, but I try.I have also noticed how your 'leave no trace' philosophy has influenced so many other RUclipsrs, though none of them has perfected the 'Binyon Ash-Stomp Boogie' as well as you. Hope all is well and that we may get to see you again, one day.
Thanks very much Andrew. Really appreciate those kind words. And very happy to hear you are trying some of the ideas. But yeah, must be so much harder with the colder temperatures you have to deal with. It’s only a question of time ….. the Ash-Stomp Boogie will become an international dance sensation 😂🤣😂🤣 Cheers 🇳🇴🇬🇧🌲⛺️
Hope that you are still getting out and enjoying the beauty of the country. We have been 20+ years in Norway now, but we well remember what the old country has to offer. Miss the beer-breaks particularly. Shine-on mate, you were a beacon in the RUclips night of reviews and sponsorships and we hope to see you again, some day. Until then, we still boogie.@@gilesbinyon
The only thing I would carry different, is a bigger tarp, and a wool blanket roll, with canvas cover. Like a cowboy bedroll. Oh, and lots of water, and maybe a Trangia burner, after all they have been around for many many MANY years, so could be considered old school.
Thanks very much as always James - appreciate you watching and commenting. Yeah, I can only get away with this small shelter as I am pretty short. A bedroll sounds nice too. And what a great piece of kit a Trangia is - featured in few of my other vids. Cheers 😊👍
Happy new year Giles! Great video and thanks for taking us along... A real challenge in that weather with minimal, traditional gear😳You're a hardy man indeed👊💪KTF🙏
Always good to catch a new Giles Binyon overnighter!! Thanks so much sir!! Great views and great camp! Just wondering if the waterproofing wore off there because it catches the heat of the fire and therefore breaks down faster than the rest of the tarp. Giles could you hand rub some boot grease into the tarp. A lot of work boot grease has only beeswax and one or two other ingredients that are nonpetroleum based. Just a thought. Really glad to see this on my notifications. Take care Giles. NQU
Thanks very much as always NQU. Really appreciate you watching the videos. And yeah, I had treated this Zeltbahn to a Nikwax treatment and your theory could be right. Will test it out again and then consider some more treatment. Thx again 😊👍
Great video Giles and perfect timing for me, I’ve just got back from a bike ride, made a cuppa and was wondering what to watch and the notification popped up😃….regarding the cold feet I wonder how empty your rucksack is once you’ve set up camp, I’d put my feet in that, it’ll keep the cold air off you and be another layer, might make a difference 🤔, thanks for the video 🙂👍🏻
Thanks for your support Monty - appreciated. Hope you managed a good bike ride. Yeah, that’s a good idea about the cold feet - not sure would fit in this small pack. I’m trying out ‘socks’ (jumper sleeves!) now 🥶 Cheers 😊👍
Great video once again. Giles would you consider do a video giving a little history about yourself; it would be nice to know some of you background and about your life.
Thanks very much. Really appreciate you watching and taking time to comment. I think I might find a video about myself could feel rather awkward to do - I’ve had a few very exciting times and worked alongside some fantastic people. I count myself so lucky for that but I would just feel a little self indulgent to do a video about it. Hope you understand what I mean there. Thx again Back-Door Barista Take care 😊👍
You could light a fire on your first hill too be seen from another , its a smashing area that , geocache down hill in bus stop nearest to the morse escarpment route down. I always wonder if I'll bump into you on the Downs share a couple of pints. All best Will
Thankyou Giles for another great video challenging conditions for you and as always you have demonstrated what can be achieved with minimal gear . Did you ever resolve your leaking shelter ? Regards Richard.
Thanks very much Richard - appreciated. Yeah, slightly challenging this one. And no I haven’t got to the bottom of the intermittent and localised leak !!! 🤔🫤 Thx again 😊👍
Hi and Happy New Year to you and your family 🎉 Great video thank you, your filming inside the shelter was fine, I could see well 😀 Also how about trying the little hand heat up in the air hand warmers, you can use them for your feet maybe, they do get hot after a while, so maybe not right on your skin 😀🔥 I am going to try them for my legs, feet and hands, I get sooooooo cold when camping in the winter ❄ Happy 2023 🌞
Thanks very much indeed Janet. And wishing you and all yours a happy and adventurous 2023. Yeah, you’re right, and I have considered those hand warmers. Think I would need quite a few tho 🤣😂🤣😂 . But tucked into a blanket or natural fibre type of sleeping bag I think they would help deffo 😊👍
Hey Giles. I'm just curious to know if you ever hung about and spent nights and days up at South Woods over Houghton/Amberley way back in the 90's. There is something about you that is very familiar to me. Loving your content, mate. Really great stuff and very inspirational. All the best to you
Thanks very much indeed for watching and your kind words too. No - it wasn’t me in the woods and times you mention. Perhaps a ‘doppelgänger’ - but I feel extremely sorry if anyone out there has to look like me 🤣😂🤣😂 Cheers 😊👍
Well done Giles for braving the weather, but it ment some good photos and filming, the Tarp with its dark wet damp patches looks like its losing its water 💧 shield, their are products on the market at outdoor stores that can waterproof clothing when they lose their water shield abilities so I imagine your can be re water shielded. Giles .
Thanks as always Owen - appreciate your support. Yeah, I actually cleaned and repaired and then washed through ‘Nikwax’ on this Zeltbahn ? Maybe I should do it again. Cheers 😊👍
Hi Giles a very good video. I loved your setup especially when you were cooking over the fire. What did you use for your platform for the fire? Old school, great!!!
Thanks very much for watching and that kind comment. Yeah, this ‘fire bowl’ is a vegetable steamer. Easy to get hold of, cheap and does a pretty good job. Take out the centre piece and knock out the little legs😊👍
I think you would be better served on the fire/cook front, with a firebox stove. It's a modern well designed wood burner, though they have a long history and its made of stainless steel, a solid English invention of 1913, from Sheffield.
Thanks very much Alexander. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Yeah, I know about the firebox stove and have always been tempted to try one. Although on other YT channels they mention that they hold a limited amount and size of fuel and burn down quite quickly. I do need to try one, one day tho 😊👍
Love your videos Giles, but I could not brave a wild camp, that must take some nerve. Two things though, it’s a shame that you feel compelled to ‘Leave No Trace’ when you aren’t doing anything wrong. Putting leaves back where you found them in a wild environment seems a little like trying to please the authorities, when frankly you’re hurting no one. As long as you leave no litter, that should be enough really, but I see why you and others do it. Secondly, your OUTRO always amuses me, 50 yards, left turn, every time, and it makes me smile 😊 keep up the good work, it’s very therapeutic this end. Thanks, Rich
Thanks very much indeed for watching and commenting. Yeah, I think it’s important to have minimal impact on the land and worth the effort even if it is perhaps a little OTT. Also good to try for the highest standards in case anyone watching wants to follow up what they see 👍 Yeah, glad you noticed my ‘habit’ at the end 😂🤣😂🤣 Cheers 👍
Thanks very much as always Terry. Appreciate your support. And I didn’t really fathom out what happened. Sometimes the tightly woven fibres in natural fibre canvas take a while to swell and become weather tight and I’m wondering if this is what was going on. I haven’t noticed it before, but perhaps with the, until now, normally usually well performing fires it drys out any signs before I notice …..hmmm Thx again 😊👍
@@TheTerryMarsh1 thx - yeah, that’s another possibility alright. I have ‘Nikwaxed’ this cape at least once and it still feels impregnated but it is hard to be sure. I’ll get round to cleaning and re-waxing soon. Sometimes I’m not sure of the effectiveness of some treatments anyway. A lot just depends on the canvas. It’s all a bit of a conundrum!!! 😂 Cheers
This weather, mate. I’m up the road in Somerset. Stayed out last Saturday just under a poncho with a few trees around me. Cor,the wind and rain, about 3.30am. It was so windy, I saw a chicken lay the same egg twice! All the best.😉👍🏾🇬🇧🏕
Ha ha !!! Love it ! 🐓🥚!!! Yeah, everything’s soaked isn’t it ? At least you got out - credit to you. Thx for watching and commenting Soggz - always appreciated 😊👍
@@gilesbinyon No worries. Don’t suppose you can give me a hint on where you got your tarp, please? Is that the old East German Rain pattern? Would like to get me one of those, and waterproof it with a load of home made waterproofing I made from Beeswax, that I inherited from my father, as he kept bees. Cheers.
@@soggz4246 yeah, you’re right. It’s the NVA Zeltbahn military cape/ poncho. And yeah, it’s the Stritchtarn camo. I got a couple on eBay but I can’t find any at the moment. I get a lot of stuff on eBay but it seems to come and go. You have to just keep an eye out ! Also Google ‘NVA Zeltbahn’ now and again and see what comes up. Military Mart have some Romanian (I think) Plash Palatka capes at the moment. These are good quality and almost identical (olive green) - about £30 I think. Hope that helps 😊👍
@@gilesbinyon Yes, thanks. I use my poncho,as it’s multipurpose, but would like something a bit heavier, maybe a canvas weave of some sort, to waterproof in the way I mentioned. All the best.👍🏾🇬🇧🏕
was just watching you clear the floor for the fire and was thinking this is going to be a struggle, lol. if i haven't got a decent knife and the woods wet then i saw half way on one side flip it over and saw half way on the other side about a foot apart, then hit it against something, 9 times out of 10 it will snap along the saw lines and expose the dry wood in the middle.
Thanks very much John - appreciate you watching and commenting. And that’s very interesting to hear about splitting the timber using a saw - I’ll try it 😊👍
What do the wax disc’s consist of for fire starting? And where can I get gaiters like those? Great day out! Miss that weather! English bloke in Arizona all the best
Cheers Dean - appreciate you watching . Yeah, the fire starters are cheap homemade. I collect all the old bits of candle wax in an old tin at home. And use it (very carefully) like a double boiler to melt the wax. Then just dip cotton wool makeup pads in and let them cool. Cheap, lightweight, recycled fire starters 👍 The gaiters are ex-British Army (era 80’s or 90’s I think). Occasionally turn up on eBay etc 👍
@@gilesbinyon😂 I make my own too, I use my wife’s discarded candle bits. My fire starters smell like Bayberry, or Autumn Mist or whatever silly names they give candles. No shame in making fire, do whatever it takes!
Having just found your video I am really interested in going wild camping but have no ideas of where to go as I’m lead to believe that it’s mostly illegal to to so in England was just wondering where it is that you filmed this?
Thanks very much for watching and commenting Paul. And you have touched on the big wild camping subject. The bulk of my videos are in the areas of the South Downs. But you are correct that there is no where in England, Wales and NI (parts of Dartmoor excepted) for wild camping. If you check out YT for videos on wild camping you will get to know the conundrum better (and notice the freedom in Scotland). There is a lot I would add about this (and you are probably aware of the recent Dartmoor court case) but too much for a comments section. Good luck and good camping ⛺️😊👍
Thanks very much Kenneth- appreciated. Yeah, if you look for the video with the thumbnail ‘in search of places to wild camp England’ and fast forward to the set up …. I briefly tried to demo how the pot hanger works. Cheers 😊👍
Have to agree with the last guys comments Giles( Pageant was it) compared with your Bushcraft u- tube competitors, you really do stand alone. A very wet Plymouth Pete.( keep ‘em coming good buddy’
Thanks very much Pete. I hope you are doing well - I expect it is even more wet in Devon 💧Always appreciate you watching and thx for that kind comment my Friend. Cheers - keep warm and dry 👍
Hey, Giles is back!
What I love about your videos, Giles, is that you actually go for a hike to get to your campsite. You're not just walking a short distance to camp for a few hours. It's like a proper day-out and overnighter. Not just a wee saunter in the park.
Thank you kindly Scotbot - appreciated. Yeah, can’t beat a good yomp taking in nature and the countryside 😊👍Cheers 👍
Thx Robert. Cheers Buddy 😊👍
Hear Hear
That looked like a wet night out Giles but it's all good fun isn't it mate you put myself and Roney to shame the amount of kit we take on a night out but we are very comfortable and warm 🤣🤣 it's hard work keeping the fire going in wet conditions we had a hard time ourselves constantly splitting wood catch you on the next one atvb Jimmy 😎😎👍👍
Cheers Jimmy. Always appreciated Mate. Yeah, I go lightweight - it makes for easier hiking and scrambling. But pay the price in lack of comfort at camp alright 🫤
Yeah, all the wet weather we’ve had makes the fire hard work.🔥 Cheers Bud take care 😊👍
Cheers Matt - really appreciate that great comment and thx for watching the vid. It’s amazing what you can do with a few reliable bits of kit. 😊👍
Epic...Thanks for your the 4/5 turn & twist the 'tail' around the 'lead' Knot, fabulous and reliable. I have used several times since. Great.
Thanks for watching and commenting Paul. And glad you are having good use from the ‘No Knot’ Cheers 😊
🍺Steven
Cheers to you too Steven. Take care Buddy 🏕️🔥

@@gilesbinyon I hope you get the cold feet situation worked out.
I dare say you don’t fancy doing a long fire?
@@BourneOutside thx Mate. Yeah, I need to work on the feet situation !!! I try and keep the fire as minimal as possible really - but it’s surprising how a small fire can warm up a small canvas tarp quite nicely 😊👍 Hope all good with you Buddy

All good this end thank you, Giles.
Hope the same for you too 😉👍🏼

Hi Giles, another great video pal, what rotten weather, that wood must have been soaked to have to use 3 of your magic pads lol, loved the cooking too, thought it would of been your stew on such a damp night. Great to see you out again pal stay safe.
Cheers Nick much appreciated and thanks for watching. Ha !!! You’re right - it would have been the perfect night for the old veg stew !!! 😂🤣😂🤣 Yeah, 3 wax pads - things were bad 💧💧💧Cheers Buddy 😊👍
Love your videos and your way of camping. Thanks for all the videos.
Thank you for watching and commenting- appreciated 👍
A bit of a challenging one, my good man. And the fickle lady fire made you work for her warmth. But as per usual you managed to pull it off while making it look easy. Again, thanks for letting us tag along. Very inspiring stuff, Giles👍 Hope you & yours had a lovely Christmas. Looking forward to what 2023 has to offer.
Cheers Dug - always appreciate you watching Buddy. And ATB for 2023 to you and yours 👍 Cheers 🍻
Looks more like a survival scenario than an over-night haha. Great to see older/traditional kit. Inspiring!
Ha ha !!! Cheers Timmy - yeah, that one was a little bit of a struggle at times 😂🤣😂🤣💧🔥
Thanks very much for watching James and that especially great comment. Cheers 🍻😊👍
I've missed your videos Giles. Top effort for sticking that one out with your minimal gear!
Cheers Geoff- appreciated. Yeah, a bit of persistence against the elements required there 💧🥶😊👍

Hi Giles. Good to see you out . Really don't know how you do it with such minimal equipment. But love to watch . Was out a few knights ago in a tent with full kit. Still can't get my feet warm . Regards
Take half an aspirin it will thin the blood & help your feet stay warmer.
A drawback to the plowpoint shelter is the cold spot in the point. Using a tarp to make a Baker Leanto configuration helps IF one has a large enough tarp to shelter the full length of a prone body.
Ha !!! Yeah, cold feet are a tough one to solve Barry !!! Thank you very much for watching and commenting tho 😊👍
Crikey Moors Hound !!! Does that work !!!
Thanks James - you’ve got me thinking I need to check out YT for the tarp/ baker tent configuration 👍⛺️

Always loving what you do, where you go, and how you do it. Cheers!
Thanks very much for watching and that’s a lovely comment - thank you 😊👍
Hello again, Giles, I hope you've had a peaceful yuletide.
I think I fit as much stuff ‘on’ that little pack as ‘in’ it 🤣😂🤣😂
Yeah, I’m deffo gonna try lying sideways onto the fire.
Yep battening or splitting with an axe is what is needed in winter for sure.
Maybe a small Nessmuk style belt axe would be good?
Thanks very much Jake - appreciated as always Mate. Yeah, I did miss the big knife then. Have an adventurous 2023 too Jake 🌲⛺️🔥😊👍
Thx very much Moors Hound - I’ve looked at something called a ‘seax’ too (I think?) …. hmmm
Always a joy to see your new videos Giles

Only just got around to watching this Giles and really glad I did. I enjoyed it no end. It’s alot different to what I do but I love it all the same, and it’s so much more interesting, exciting and engaged with a challenge than a lot of the fayre on RUclips. The night of the 3 wax discs!🤠👍🏼

Cheers very much Christopher- appreciated. Yeah, conditions were slightly testing - but fun 💧🥶👍
Ha ha !!! Glad that country Pub image didn’t cross my mind that night …. it would have meant camp over and retire to a warm Pint deffo 😂🤣😂🤣
Yeah, I got hold of an old style canvas bivi - which is actually designed as a sleeping bag cover (think it’s called an M1945 cover).

Great video of perseverance. One simple suggestion: move the wind reflector back 3 inches and put wet wood in between it and your fire to dry. Each time you add those bits to the fire, move more of the wet wood to dry. It may make it easier to keep your fire going. Cheers!
Thanks very much Black Sheep - appreciate you watching. And yeah, that’s a good idea. I was trying to do something similar on the night but with varying success. Cheers 😊👍
Great camp that Giles. Those views were certainly awesome, and that gnarly old wood you camped in look full of character.

Yes, rain can often stop play, but in your case and this instance .. nope. Those waxed cotton makeup pads work like a charm .. use them too. To fit into my tin, I trim the edges. The 'twirl' cut off that results also helps in getting reluctant burns going.

Thanks very much Ysgolgerlan. Always appreciate you watching and that’s a nice comment. And happy new year to you and yours too my Friend 😊👍
Good to see you out again, a challenging camp that one, happy new year Giles 👍
Thanks very much John. And a happy new year to yourself and all yours. Yeah, slightly testing conditions on that one ! 😊👍
Yay!! You’re back! It’s nearly spring, and you know what that means…. Plotting camping trips with the grandson! If she’s being nice we may take his mum! X
Ha ha !!! Yeah, hoping you get some quality camps with your little fella - and bring his Mum along too, I’m sure she’ll be well behaved 😂🤣😂🤣
Thanks so much as always for watching and commenting.
Hehe!! Xx
@@jessicapayne8622 🤣😂🤣😂👍👍👍
Nice one Giles, William and I enjoyed watching this. Atb.
Thanks very much indeed - and it was lovely to meet you both the other day. Glad William enjoyed it too and pls say hello from me 😊👍
Great video Giles, lots of altitude in this one, you certainly cover some ground👍👍
Thanks very much for watching and commenting. Think you could be right - it seemed part of the tarp let-by for a while then seemed to stop 🤔Cheers 😊👍
Hope you’re well and you’ve had a full summer of camping Giles. Really looking forward to new videos!! 😉
Thanks and Cheers ⛺️🌲😊👍
awesome video as always, I'm slowly taking a leaf out of your book with minimal gear, still use the odd synthetics poncho and sleeping bag for winter I'll brave the half lavvu and blanket in summer and aiming to get out walking more,, look forward to your next video,
Thanks very much John - appreciate you watching and commenting. And good luck with the minimal camping 😊👍
As always really nice video Giles!
I agree with your followers you need more appreciation, instead of all those wannabe bushcraft and so called specialist in survival with high tec gears.
Really nice to see what you can make with some old school gear.
Keep up the good work, don’t stop walking🤘
Peace from Sweden
Thanks very much indeed Foger - appreciate you watching and those kind words. 🤘🇸🇪🇬🇧 Cheers
Cheers 😊👍
That was great buddy 👍 abit wet but look like fun keep them coming .
Cheers very much Mark. Yeah, a bit of a challenge this one !!! 😊👍
Happy new year Giles! Great video and thanks for taking us along... A real challenge in that weather with minimal, traditional gear😳You're a hardy man indeed👊💪KTF🙏
Happy new year to you and all yours too Marty. Really appreciate this and all your support over the year - thank you. KTF Bro 🙏
Well done Giles you put many so called wild campers to shame, great channel you're developing. Cheers and Happy new year.
Thanks for watching - always appreciated RTK. A happy new year to you and yours too 👍 ATB Buddy 😊
Looked like a heck of a good time, that weather just wasn’t wanting to cooperate! You really hung in there! That food looked incredible! Great video!
Thanks very much - appreciate you watching and that great comment too. Cheers 😊👍
What backpack do you use great videos as as ways
Thanks John - sorry slow reply - I missed this comment. Yeah, in this video it’s a Yugoslav backpack/haversack from an eBay shop. Cheers 🌲🏕️👍
Great video, testing conditions by the look! Nothing worse than wet wood for sure
Thanks for watching and commenting John. Yeah, everything is so wet. The fire is hard work at the moment !!! Cheers 😊👍
Happy New Year, sir from Wisconsin USA. Ugh, rain. Better than snow I suppose.
Thank you very much for watching and commenting Patrick. Yeah, not sure what’s easier - rain or snow 💧❄️ Take care 🇺🇸🇬🇧👍
All best Will
Cheers Will. Appreciate you watching and commenting as always. Ha ha !!! I’ll light a fire on the hill top then we will meet up 😊🍻🍻 Cheers
Excellent stuff Giles!
Thank you kindly The Dagda - appreciate it 😊👍
Great stuff as ever....you looked like someone out of Game of Thrones at the end!
Thanks very much Alan - ha !!! - yeah, those Military Capes look rather imposing when they are worn don’t they 🧥!!! 😊👍
Brilliant, it makes my day when a new Giles vIdeo appears, it looks like you set up just in the nick of time.
Thank you Yeti Dodger - always appreciate your support. Yeah, it was a race against the rain but I didn’t achieve a total victory!!! 😂🤣
Wow. Have fun stay safe.
Thanks Kenneth 🌲⛺️🔥😊👍
Perhaps a ‘doppelgänger’ - but I feel extremely sorry if anyone out there has to look like me 🤣😂🤣😂
Cheers 😊👍
Well done Giles for braving the weather, but it ment some good photos and filming, the Tarp with its dark wet damp patches looks like its losing its water 💧 shield, their are products on the market at outdoor stores that can waterproof clothing when they lose their water shield abilities so I imagine your can be re water shielded.
Giles .
Thanks as always Owen - appreciate your support. Yeah, I actually cleaned and repaired and then washed through ‘Nikwax’ on this Zeltbahn ? Maybe I should do it again. Cheers 😊👍
You're a hard soft man, well done sir.
Cheers Mike - appreciate it 😊👍
Hi Giles a very good video.
What a wet and windy one, Giles!
Congrats on braving the UK weather.
Did you work out why your shelter leaked at first, then improved later?
Thanks very much as always Terry. Appreciate your support. And I didn’t really fathom out what happened. Sometimes the tightly woven fibres in natural fibre canvas take a while to swell and become weather tight and I’m wondering if this is what was going on. I haven’t noticed it before, but perhaps with the, until now, normally usually well performing fires it drys out any signs before I notice …..hmmm
Thx again 😊👍
@@gilesbinyon Maybe heat from your fire has vaporised any oil or wax waterproofing that was impregnated at that end of the canvas? Just a thought.
And that’s very interesting to hear about splitting the timber using a saw - I’ll try it 😊👍
@@gilesbinyon if you type "split wood with a saw" into youtube you will find some examples that are better than my text description.
Love your videos keep em coming ATB
Cheers Roger - appreciated 😊👍
No shame in making fire, do whatever it takes!
nice one as always good effort hats off
Cheers as always Hugh - 🍻🍷🍷😊👍
Excellent, thank you
Thank you kindly for watching and very glad you enjoyed 😊👍
That was a bit of a wet one. Well done with minimal gear that weather.
Thanks very much Allen. Appreciate you watching and I’m looking forward to your latest - looks different I reckon. Cheers 😊👍
@@gilesbinyon we shall see. 😁😁
Giles. How do you hang your pot. What knots are you using. I would like to try your system. Thanks
Found via YT recommendation 👍 and subbed. How far was the hike to your "campsite"?
Thanks very much Sam - appreciate your support. I reckon I walked about 12 miles that day as a guess. Always less when you are filming !!! Cheers 😊👍
