Part 1 👉 • Making of Daleks Invas...
In the concluding half of our investigations into the filming of the Dalek Invasion at Shepperton Studios, we piece together the timeline at the end of production to reveal a desperate scramble to reassemble the set and film some decdent Dalek footage.
*Apologies for a little error regarding 'Out of the Unknown' which was of course made by the BBC and not ABC!*

Dalek 63•88 these programs are fantastic ! Well done for all your hard research ! Brilliant insight into these fantastic movies !
Thank you John!
You’re only human. As far as we know ;)
Possibly! ;)
@@Dalek6388 I will be related to Hartnell and Troughton and Pertwee
I can't believe how quickly 26 minutes flew by. MORE. MORE. I could watch this stuff for hours.
Thank you!
More more more that's what she said!
I watched it again after it ended, love it!
Agreed 👍
Even as a child watching this film I could never understand why the filmmakers felt it was reasonable for the cars to be so old, but it has finally dawned on me. Modern cars are so full of computer technology that they are easily disabled by naughty Dalek hackers, so only old cars without engine/suspension/road-awareness/seat-position/upholstery-colour computer control are of any use in 2150. I guess they raided a car museum for all the antique vehicles. At last I'll be able to sleep easy in my bed...
"it's impossible to find the derelict location where the mysterious 50-year-old dalek footage was filmed"

"Hold my beer..."
😂👍🏻
Congrats!!
I am amazed how such a simple flaw like a slightly lower number 2 on a clock or an extra rivet on a Dalek gives people with an incredible eye for detail the opportunity to track props so easily and provide literally hours of interesting behind the scenes information, I really hope you guys have got another series in mind for when this one ends.
Thank you! Yes, it gets like a big jigsaw. When you see the 'flaw' you want to go on and see if you can find it elsewhere. We do have more plans yes but no timescale at the moment!
@@Dalek6388 Excellent, can't wait to see what you come up with for the next series (not that I'm wishing this one to end of course, I'm still thoroughly enjoying this one yet 😃 )
The level of detail, and depth of research in these films is staggering. I can't wait for the next episode 👍
Thank you!
This is without doubt the best thing on RUclips! The amount of research and attention to detail is just incredible. I'm just loving this series. 👍😎
Thank you Kenny!
@@Dalek6388 i agree, professional quality
Very very good work. I'm impressed. I remember watching the first series as a nipper in 1960s New Zealand. Scared the shit out of me.
Thank you!
These should be DVD extras... more informative and interesting than those on the film discs.
Thank you Iain!
Maybe Port this series into a DVD set.. ruclips.net/video/TrXBEuG7I3A/видео.html&t=26
I'd buy a DVD of the series!
The dalek saucer also appears in a film called The Body Stealers, starring Patick Allen. 1969
OMG - I remember those bendy toys. A horrible porous rubber, and a probably dangerous wire core. Lived near Shepperton and remember when they had an auction including the Dalek space ship, but too young to go.
I believe the model still exists somewhere!
I’m sure it was damaged
I absolutely loved this film when I watched it as a kid, the sound of the Dalek spacecraft, just before it appears was spine-tingling. What as always intrigued me is some of the dialogue in the part of the film when the Doctor arrives back at the London underground base, to find it deserted. After discovering the Dalek base of operations, the Doctor works out the safest route. Tracing the shortest route on the map, he declares that they should avoid Bedford, as it is crawling with Daleks. How does he know this? Even if there is a warning on the map, the next question is Why? What is the strategic significance of Bedford? Why are the Daleks patrolling deserted ruins? They have conquered the Earth, why are they wasting their time pottering round in the deserted ruins of towns, instead of concentrating their forces on their base of operations, the mine which is their reason for invading the planet?
It's fascinating to see the filming tricks and sleights of hand employed in the making of this movie, the knowledge actually enhances the appreciation of the work, which had a profound effect on me as a small child watching the Dalek emerging from the Thames during a TV screening.
This is just absolutely fascinating. Until a few years ago everyone assumed the full TARDIS landing area was on location and now everyone knows the truth, which is far more interesting. Thank you so much for another great episode! Ron Moody was offered the role of the Doctor mere weeks after Oliver, and one hopes him seeing the battered and broken Daleks wasn't a factor in him saying no!
I was the same until I started to look into it. It’s amazing how much was done on that one set that looks so different each time you see it!
Superb. This is a unique record and worthy of the widest audience, fascinating to anyone interested in the history of the Shepperton, and, indeed, British film making.
Thank you David, much appreciated! :)
Wonderful video! I must admit that I have learned a lot that I was blissfully unaware of regarding a large number of my favourite movies and other productions (not just 'Doctor Who') the 'Oliver' connection surprised me the most and I can't wait to tell my GF about it because 'Oliver' is one of her all time favourite films.
I was also surprised (via watching both parts) regarding the fact that this epic movie was filmed in such a small localised area, I already knew that the street scenes were filmed on the back lots (rather than on location as was the BBC version) but it amazed me on the inventiveness on the part of those who worked on the production to reuse so many props and other equipment to represent so many varied parts of London.
To be honest I was fooled into believing that they filmed the entire movie over a much larger area, with loads and loads of new sets made from scratch each and every time a new location or setting was needed (I did spot the reuse of some of the props used in the Dalek base were used in other productions though, but I was surprised at how many props were used in productions of which I never in a million years would think would have any kind of connection with each other, barring perhaps actors and writers and the like) and that much of the location work had been done so close to the main studio, I knew that the TV series tended to use locations in or nearby London, but to be honest I actually was fooled into believing that given that the films had larger budgets than the show, that they cast and crew filmed the scenes set in Bedfordshire were filmed in Bedfordshire, or failing that some place somewhat similar, perhaps nearby.
All in all, yet another wonderful video thank you for uploading and keep up the good work.
Happy Times and Places.
Thank you Christopher! Yes its incredible what they did with the budget and local area. Amazing ingenuity really!
Fresh content/new angles/very well produced; this is how it should be done!
Thank you!
Great video series, very indepth research and information. I'm an American, but was a young lad in England 70-74.
Thank you Don!
Amazing work. I pass many of those areas and buildings as I work in the studios including walking past stage H as there is a smaller entrance just to the side of it. I knew Star wars and 2001 was shot there but I had no idea Dalek invasion was. Makes my journey into work feel more special now. Thank you.
Thank you! If you find any stray Daleks please let us know!!
Amazing stuff. The revelation that the New york street scene was filmed in Shepperton was scarcely credible and proof we once had a formidable film industry until the 70's. Pity the Chase and a few thereafter never made it to celluloid.
You guys have only gone and done it again. Another masterpiece of detective work. Bravo.
Thank you Shaun
Fascinating stuff, I especially like the behind the scenes look at how they do special effects like the painted backdrops. I shudder to think how many times you had to watch the movie to get all this down ;-)
Actually surprisingly not that many. A lot was done from captures and photos!
As I child I was incredibly upset by the actions of the traitor Brockley. I remember my mum comforting me trying to explain the betrayal. (well played Philip)
The way the daleks coldly & ruthlessly killed him once he'd served his purpose gave me nightmares as a small boy. Still gives me a shiver when I watch the scene.
"Don't tell him Pike"
I never understood why he traded food for gold when civilisation is destroyed, was he taking it to a pawn shop for cash to pay off his mortgage? Couldn't he of just robbed empty shops instead? Makes no sense.
3:43 - The unknown dome seems obvious to me, once you've seen the columns, and know that the Thames is meant to be behind the camera (and another clue being the shot at 3:49 which shows the triangular pediment above the columns.)
The building in question is meant to be the National Gallery. The scene is set in the vicinity of Trafalgar Square. Compare with the still at 4:40, the shot looking up Whitehall towards the Square showing the Gallery behind.
Wow. So much info. Can’t believe it was only 26 mins! The logical links from one shot to the next and the solving of the turquoise door mystery. Awesome dedication! Can’t express my admiration highly enough. Respect to all!
Thank you Richard!
Stumbled on these 2 shepperton videos and having seen the 2 dalek films endless times I wondered why I hadn’t seen your videos. Then I noted their release date which was a few weeks ago.
I have never been so mesmerised in your documentaries specifically aimed at the 2 films which have been a big part of my like since the mid sixties.
The incredible accurate detail (and back up proof) set them apart. You have a real talent here that deserves to be seen to a wider audience.
These nostalgic gems are NOT just for nerds on here (me included)- you can see from the high viewing rates that there are a hell of a lot of people out there watching and every comment made is a glowing one to your dedication and attention to detail-made all the more difficult because of the passage of time.
Will savour the rest of your you tube output. Well done to all who participated. The big question is -will there be a third documentary on the two films??
Thank you so much for those really kind words. They really are appreciated and we are quite touched by them! Thank you 🙏
As for another video on the films... we don’t have a specific one planned in this first series which is six episodes. But there are options for more in the future. We could cover the Dalek props specifically and we have had some ideas for one based more around the first movie too.
Dalek 63•88 that’s great keep up the good work. I think the documentaries are marvellous!
Like others on here-I could watch them all day haha!
Ps they are so crammed with information and precise detail I had to keep rewinding to take it all in....
An excellent documentary, well researched and presented. This is what terrestial TV has been missing for decades.
Thank you! We are pleased you liked it. 😀
Y'know other Doctor Who documentaries would focus on something like the history of the Daleks or how certain eras of the show played out. Never in my life would I imagine I'd not only watch a documentary series on the filming of the Dalek films with trivial info like certain props, but that I'd also be heavily invested! Shows the quality of this RUclipsr I'd say.
Thank you Riain!
Here`s hoping for more , thoroughly enjoyed this, sad to see it end.
We have more episodes on different subjects planned! 😀
Yet another fantastic entry in this series! I've loved every single one, thanks for creating and uploading these expertly produced episodes, they wouldn't be out of place as extras on an official BBC release!
Thank you!
@@Dalek6388 Not at all!
This series has been fascinating. I love the 60s Dalek Movies and the level of detail and research gone into these docs borders on embarrassing! And I can't thank you enough for it!! Keep them coming... :-)
Thank you!
Absolutely superb. I'm a real sucker for (a); Anything Doctor Who related, and (b); full of minutiae. Add to those a series that is incredibly well made - it'd be a great extra on new reissues of the two Dalek movies, and I'm happy. Nice one, gents, nice one.
Thank you!
Amazing series, I wish these could be collected and sold on dvd, they’re such a treasure trove for fans!
Thank you! That’s really kind!
Man, I could keep watching this forever. Please keep making docs! :)
Thanks Justin!
I continue to be impressed by the amount of research that must have gone into these. Great stuff.
Thanks Dave!
I have nothing but a passing interest in Doctor Who...but these videos are incredible! I could watch them all day! Genuinely fascinating stuff.
Glad you are enjoying them!
I found it fascinating how the sets were dressed, re-arranged and re-used. Obviously as a cub watching from the beginning, we were enthralled by the plots and monsters/aliens and would have missed such things as repositioned cupboards, meters lights etc. A totally wonderful series from the beginning up to the present time. As for the poor continuity people, in a programme that can go backwards and forwards in time, must have an absolute nightmare, so its hardly surprising there were a few inconsistances, it all adds to the fun.Thankyou for this info.
Thank you!
More great stuff! Fantastic work.
Thank you Paul!
Blooming heck, that was great. Absolutely love these episodes. So much research and clear information. So well done.
Thanks James!
This is my favourite series on youtube right now, meticulous research, presented in such a way that it never gets dull, but not so fast that you can't follow it, it really is a masterclass in interesting stuff, love it!
Thank you! That really is appreciated! 🙏😀
Great stuff!! I've been a fan of your site for ages, and a fan of the Daleks since the 70s. My first TV Dalek exposure was Destiny....
Keep up the good work!
Thank you!
It is a crime that You don't have 1 million subscribers the research is incomprehensible Amazing work!
Thanks Matthew!
This is brilliant stuff. The quality of youtube material far outstrips the junk that bloated TV company productions can muster.
Thanks John!
This is an incredible series. The amount of research attention to detail is phenomenal.
Can’t wait to see the next episode
Thanks Michael!
Stunning research and amazing presentation!! Well done.
Thank you Simon. That’s appreciated!
Captivating stuff, amazing research and production values. A fantastic series that transports me back to when I was a young lad that thought this film was the best that ever had or would be made. In some ways I wasn't too far wrong. Thank you for doing these.
As a Multiemedia student and a Doctor Who fan, I greatly appreciate these videos. Thank you
Thank you!
Another magnum opus, sympatico with the very ethos of Dr Who, and almost as eerie, travelling through time to re-witness such wondrous events, and for those lucky ones in the UK, to physically re-visit.
I actually feel like I am living in the future watching this documentary, so effortlessly is the information delivered, almost as though a superior power who sees all and knows all is narrating, Thank you for adding another 26 wonderful minutes to the world of Dr Who, and more specifically, Daleks Invasion 2150.
Thank you Brett!
I grew up on this movie on VHS in the 1990s! What a video! Great work on the music too. I wish I could get my hands on Bill McGuffie's full isolated score.
I’m really enjoying these. Fantastic work.
Great to hear you like them!
Thanks for a great series of video's. As an 11 year old watching the film in the now long demolished Morden Odeon my biggest issue was with the vehicles. They were clearly contemporary with early sixties London. Other than that I loved the film and it was the high light of the school holidays. Later on in my life a similar thing happened when I went to see Quadrophenia, late 1970's cars in a film set in the early 1960's.
Glad you are enjoying the videos David!
really enjoying this series of videos :)
Thank you!
Thank you for a very informertive insight in to shepperton studios with all it's connections ...great stuff !
Thank you Paul!
Excellent video. The research put into these videos is outstanding. Well done
Thanks Joe!
It almost feels like we need a "Making of the Terry Nation Army videos" video once these are done to explain how you managed to piece all of this together!
I’m not sure it would be that interesting but you never know!
Another great in-depth video ...fascinating stuff 👍
Thank you David!
How on earth do u notice props from different shows in the background.. Wow there is some seriously deep and consise research in this series of uploads.incredible..if this is the uploaders own research then he must be commended for this work because it is the most thorough I can imagine anyone getting. This is what seperates professional from amateur. Phenomenal. Thankyou
Hard to put a guage on how much, but something like this can't be done without some help from others and they have been credited. With regards to the props in other shows, there is a small like-minded group on twitter that have helped out as it means lots of eyes in lots of different places! But Gav did alot of work into getting dates etc and producing charts to show what order they were used in and therefore who could have supplied them.
As for the specific locations work of Shepperton, I would guess that 95% of that was us. Finding out exactly where the street was, or the villa for example was down to us entirely. But again, we had some help is spotting these places in other shows and films. Then the real work is putting it all together and formulating the timeline and changes. The street was fun to do?! And the work on the signs going up during the filming of the Van scene was all us.
Cracking video Gromit, always enjoy these. Thank you
Absolutely brilliant and some great detective work 👍🏻
Thank you Alan! :)
Just amazing. The amount of research that must have gone into this is staggering.
I honestly had no idea so little of 2160AD was filmed on real locations, if you’d asked me before I’d seen this video I would have sworn that they filmed all over London! It’s either a testament to the filmmaker’s skill on me being very unobservant.
For a low budget film it did wonders with what was available!
Daleks in Oliver would have been amazing.
Excellent video. I love each every episode this great channel is doing and the meticulous detail of each one - this one suddenly became of particular interest to me when I realised that I often stood in the exact spot where the Dalek had famously risen from the Thames in 'Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.'! Two of my favourite things in life are nature photography, and 'backstreet' London history exploring; at this point alone I took a photo of a mother goose sheltering her young a couple of months ago.
I often scour various bits of London finding and matching old filming locations (have done quite a few 'Who' ones, as well as everything from 'Avengers' to 'Minder' to 'Grange Hill'), but sniggered to myself that I'd been to such an iconic spot and not actually realised it, despite the research I've put into other such locations.
Keep up the good work folks; wonder if at some point you might even venture beyond the pure Dalek content and branch off into vintage Who filming locations.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the videos and it led to your discovery! We may go off in other directions but for the time being the videos will be mainly Dalek related. Good luck with the location hunting!
got to say these videos are a gold mine of information i never knew, and so well made, thanks for uploading and sharing these. Hope there are many more to come
Thank you Paul thats appreciated! And yes, there are more to come!
Great video, yet again.
Thank you Peter!
Blinking flip, that was exhaustive! Well done.
Thank you!
Unbelievable stuff. Well done. Best dr who pieces I've seen in a long time.
Thank you 🙏
Great video! Your research and keen eye for detail, make this a fascinating, entertaining and thoroughly informed viewing experience. Thank you.
Thank you Cliff!
my gf found an abandoned dalek in the back yard of shepperton studios when she was a kid in the 60's, they used to climb over the fence and use it as a playground. she also found a box of beatles records with the wrong labels on that had been thrown out, she would be sitting on a nice nest egg now if she had kept them
She would be pretty well off now for sure!
The research that goes into these videos ( and the website) is almost beyond belief, it`s fantastic. I want to know what happened to the Daleks that were lying around Shepperton "falling to pieces".
Thank you Hazel! Yes we’d love to know too! We are always on the lookout for traces of original props so hopefully one day...!
Thoroughly enjoyed that. The amount of research you’ve done is superb and so well presented.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it!
I love your attention to detail and dry humour. Also, you're adding new content to my trivia memory banks that I'll never forget, and I'll randomly blurt out much to the annoyance of my wife! Keep up the good work chaps!
I have never commented on a video before but I felt I had to the research and detail you go into is absolutely amazing and for the editing absolutely top notch please keep up the good work I appreciate everything you have done I take my hat off to you sir.
Thank you Patrick. That really is appreciated!
Absolutely awesome! Just loving this series! Can't wait for the next part. Fantastic stuff!👏👏
Thank you Jules. Glad you are enjoying it!
These have become the highlight of my viewing week! Many thanks for all your efforts.
Thank you Rik!
Fantastic and fascinating! What splendid research. Keep up the excellent work. More! More!
Two more planned for this series!
This was fun; love your attention to detail and history. I only saw this movie as a kid, so most of the errors were never noticed (or forgotten if I ever saw them)! LOL. It all feels like a detective/forensics exercise. Love it all!
Pleased you enjoyed it! 😀
Really loving these videos. Very informative and above all - interesting! Congrats to all involved.
Thank you Mik!
Wow that’s fascinating. I have so much love for both these Dalek movies!
Aw man love these Vids, especially the Intro. I do try to find out things on the Internet but I dont have time to go so in-depth like you do and it’s awesome since I know this took ages to make because of all the Info and facts
Another good one lads, well done.
But in honesty, these episodes make me really curious to watch Daleks Invasion 2150AD.
Excellent stuff thank you. Loved it. Not just the great footage - your research and presentation is top notch.
Thank you!
It’s scary amazing how much detail these vids go into! 👏👏👏👍
Wonderful work!
Please do more. The quality of the video and the information is amazing and so in depth
Glad you are enjoying them! We have two more planned in this series!
Loving your videos. Keep up the great work!
Thank you!
Love the vids! Already knew about the Vickers Vimy engine nacelles mentioned in the last episode from an article in the aeroplane magazine.
This stuff is like catnip to me. Looking forward to the next one.
Amazing work!
Aaaah, I love all the search for locations so much! Great work!
Thank you!
Loving the meticulously researched information.
Thank you!
Fantastic insight into a beloved film keep up the good work :)
Thank you!
Just walked down the woodland path behind the studio’s today. And the statues are still there!
There’s a new path there because of all the expansion work going on, Netflix etc.
Fantastic...Really good work, thoughly enjoyable! Thank you
Thanks Phil!
Another intriguing and fascinating article. Many thanks. 👍
brilliant video as always!!!!!!!!😁
The level of research involved in this is insane. I love it. ;)
Thank you! 🤪

Now I would thank that is the art gallery at Trafalgar Square, since Embankment is near Charing Cross station and Trafalgar Square.
Fantastic! Great attention to detail and research 👌🏽
Thank you!
