Aladino do you know of a Canadian boatbuider Victor Carpenter? Victor had a sign in his modest shop "If God wanted plastic boats He would have planted plastic trees. Victor built wooden (non West System) boats from 20 to 65 feet. His early MORC 28-30 footers featured twin rudders, a bow-mounted rudder, radical rigs etc. etc. His craftmanship is legendary. He built a 45 footer ("Golden Goose") for Gordon Lightfoot, someone Maya can tell you about. His last big boat was a 65" sloop "Passing Wind" which featured a 90' spruce spar. Victor was amazing and I think that you are too. Boatbuilding needs young crafstmen like you. I hope you have a opportunity to Google some of his boats. BTW his wife Hazel was the expert varnish applicator...

It is a pleasure watching your woodworking skills Aladino and i think your use in this case is very well reasoned, though i would say the side grain to side grain adhesion is probably going to be structurally adequate. If you were wanting to hide the butt joints, i have found in fine door patching that if you saw the ends into 45 degree spear points, the butt joins tend to disappear into the grain. Were i fussy i might use a dovetail angle to hold in the ends. It is sort of the same principle of patching fine veneers with the little football shaped patches. But i love your eagle eyed catching of the rot before it got much of a start on the combing and your proactive attention to the little things before they become big things. And your tendency to not over complicate things.

I had a Vindo 32 for a few years. Rot in the cabin top got too much for me in the end.
It’s good to see you guys keeping on top of it. Make sure to check the deck head under the paint also, that’s what caught me out.

A good method to remove rot if you plan to reuse the part is a rotary wire brush which removes the rot but only scars the sound wood.

Really glad you caught the moisture seepage at an early stage! Wood is really a sponge once water finds a way. And it always will :-) When I was about 16 years old I used all my savings to buy a little wooden boat. It was a Dutch-designed van de stadt primaat (also about 40 years old at the time I owned it). I spent the first summer and winter restoring it. Very quickly I realized water found its way more or less inside the complete superstructure. Luckily, my dad, a very skilled woodworker, helped me rebuild the whole thing from tracing the old rotten parts! It was quite a challenge for me at the time. But it taught me grit and to keep going when you encounter bad news. After that winter passed, we put her in the water and sailed her on the Dutch waters. Sailing alone, on a boat that I had resuscitated from near death myself, was the best feeling! You guys will fix this issue like the skilled woodworkers that you are. And you will sail Magic Carpet again before you know it! Thanks for sharing your story!

Even more insidious than coaming rot is deck core rot since it often shows little outward signs until the decks (or sometimes hull panels) go spongy. Great to see Aladino going after it like a true pro before it gets worse.

They now have new Silicone that you can varnish and or paint and it will adapt to it.

Totally agree with your thoughts on silicone. The biggest problem we see is folks not using the relevant primer for either polysulphide or silicone based products. They then blame the product for breaking away or delaminating. Same goes for epoxy. So many times folks use epoxy without the right primer and the paint over it without priming the epoxy or removing the blush. Then blame the epoxy. Like metals using dissimilar materials has to be done under control in the right way. Are you considering a penetrating low viscosity epoxy on the rotted timber? We have had some good results with this years ago on an older boat we had. Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.

Hi. An old guy taught me this. Dip your screws!! I've been repairing and rebuilding yachts and ships for over 20 years. That said, i think you have way more skills than I. Great training. But its along the lines of a normal boatyard, where cost counts. Every screw and bolt that I ever put in gets dipped into sealant (usually the spout on the sealant tube). It makes a hell of a mess and a lot of my employees and i just hate the cleanup afterwards. The sealant has to gush out but its easy to make a tape collar with a fold and a snip. Bolts do not get pushed in but turned. My own personal boat had wooden masts... and was mahogany.. I only had problems on the attachments I did not rebed....The ones I did never leaked in 20 years. I remain in touch with a lot of my former clients and they report the same on the work we did....On other RUclips channels it bothers the hell out of me when I see people smear sealant on the bottom of a fitting and then screw it in. Think about a screw and the tiny wiggle it gets thru vibration and pressure. Every time your back goes back against that coaming, or you winch, that screw becomes slightly less perpendicular to its line of force. Its worth the effort to clean up the sealant (goo) than to have water seep in thru osmosis.

I am a lover of old sail boats, it is good to see someone ensuring that one survives to keep sailing. How many off these boats went unloved until they were beyond repair and left to rot. I had an East German Folkboat which was a nightmare to maintain, they were not the best of the class. There is no way it will still be sailing, well done guys.

I have many years examining timber decay in service in Australia as a Wood Product scientist. My research found Mahogany not very durable and perhaps should not be used where longevity of an item is paramount. Also were all the veneers Mahogany? maybe an even less durable timber, or the less durable sapwood of Mahogany. Another property of some timber decaying fungi is it form thickened hyphae boundaries at a place in the timber where the timber moisture content will not support further decay. This then provides suitable decay "bubble" within the piece and the outer surface will not show wet patches (as you discovered). As the wet timber is drying you could sprinkle some borax onto the wet sections. The borax, as a fungicide, will diffuse into the wet timber and kill the fungus as it spreads out in the wet decay zone.
