So many updates this week! What's cooking for 2022? Did we just reveal a bit about our launch schedule? What parts are needed to button up the plans for rig and sails? Where's Alix?
It's been a hot minute since we had a quiet, contemplative look at some carpentry in action. Steve builds the companionway ladder in this episode, and we follow that process as he selects reclaimed wood from the sides of Victoria's cabin trunk and cockpit footwell. It can be tricky!
A simple oil finish on the cabin sole and the ladder steps will feel good on bare feet, will have a good grip even when wet, and will be easy to maintain in the future. The wood sealer we use hardens nicely and protects the wood while leaving some texture that's both pleasing to the eye for its warmth and practical for its safety and comfort.
We'll cover the installation next week, when we'll demonstrate how all the hardware that will hold the steps in place. The top step will swing outboard, there will be some pieces in the lid of the fridge to protect the very nice gasket from repeated squishings that could shorten its life.
Thanks for being here every week. We've got new tiers on Patreon.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur boat builder building a 38' wooden boat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

I still have no idea why the keel pour popped up on my feed 4 years ago, but I'm very grateful. Because I found this channel, I also discovered Leo and his Tally Ho project. I'm excited to see you in the water under sail. Thank you for the update on Alix, life has a funny way of weaving people into and out of our lives, I'm sure he'll excel at whatever and wherever his journey leads him. See you on the 11th.
I could have written your post exactly as written except for the very last sentence!
At the beginning of the lockdown the lead poor was constantly in my recommended. Think because I'd watched some smelting videos. Finally said "ok RUclips, you win" clicked it, then another, then another, then the subscribe button. Now I count down to Friday's.
Yep, keel pour was on my feed then as well. I watched it and was hooked. Great ride so far. Looking forward to everything still to come. Best wishes to Alix.
Same with me. Started with the keel pour when I just survived a surgery and was recovering.
Yep, the ballast keel lead pour hooked me as well! As a plumber I occasionally still pour lead and oakum joints in soil pipe so a large pour was interesting. The 275 gallon oil tank Steve reinforced was minimalist and inspired. The pipe run for the pour actually worked! I watched with rapt attention wondering how the lead was going to react to the long run in cold pipe. The glue failing on the plywood was so out of left field... The hook was set deep that day. SKOL!!
Hey Alex, if you're reading this, and I hope you are, you need to follow your own path through life. Sometimes it doesn't go in the direction you first thought it would, but that's how things are. All the best for the future, and hope you are able to be there for the launch. 👍
I think I'm not alone in the "here since the lead pour"-gang. The algorithm loved that video and so many people joined the journey because of it. What I'd love to see is a statistic of what videos brought you the most followers. Maybe you could prepare something for the 200 episode special. Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹
More lead pouring please..
Ich bin auch seit dem Bleigießen dabei! Grüße aus der Steiermark
Lead pour gang checking in!
@@arvana me too (different from the 2018 #metoo)
I'm a Lead-Pour guy. That was my first episode as well, and maybe the most memorable one? I think so.
Wishing Alix all the best...Arabella would not be at the point it is now without his passion and commitment. Hopefully it's just a "So long for now" and he can come back for some of the adventures Arabella will be carrying a crew of friends and compatriots in the future.
Ya never know. 👍🏼
@@AcornToArabella an update about and with Alix would be nice.
There is a growing suspicion something else may lay at the roots of you guys splitting up.
@@fredvanleeuwen9996 Alix complained, blamed and made excuses constantly. That man could not open a scene without stating "the sky is falling currently, I'm only at half speed, but I'm here to make the best of it, if I can" , in comparison to Steve's unmatched ability and ultimately delivery of it these days...the split was inevitable.
There is a saying in Germany, the strong man is mightiest alone.

Sad to hear that Alex has moved on from the project, though, as someone who has had to move on from projects in life, I totally understand having to do so.
His filmography really did add a special touch to the episodes, though. We viewers will miss him.
Well, while sad, I'm not surprised by your Alix update. It seemed an inevitable conclusion to me. As a longtime viewer, I do miss those 2+ years of episodes with you two working side by side. However, since that episode where you both sat down and faced the camera and you stated that Arabella would be your boat, I felt that something had to eventually change with Alix's commitment going forward. Sorry to see him "officially" go today, but as you said, things change.
It's worth noting that this was always the understanding between the two of them, and really this just shows the maturity of that arrangement from the outset. Over the many years this project is taking overall, it was always highly improbable that two friends would continue to maintain the same level of interest in the project, not to mention the life circumstances that make it possible. Alix being free to move on to other things was the right approach, and honestly everyone should have expected it eventually.
That episode was uncomfortable. Cringe would not be going too far. Not the fact of whose boat it was/is, but how it was handled and the clear strain in the relationship that was present. I knew then things would not be the same and, along with little things like the music change and other dds and ends I've been increasingly less...involved...dedicated? excited...anticipated less each upload.
@@TBPollock I agree, I just went back to episode #1 and in every episode was Alix saying "WE". This was a story about two guys rebuilding Arabella with the goal of sailing off to explore the world together. Today Stephen waves goodbye and Alix looses hundreds of hours of work for an outcome he will never realize. Russel, I couldn't find the episode you're talking about but I did see it back in the day and thought, WOW that was a well placed kick to the groin of Alix. So today ends my support for the project and yes I have unsubscribed.
@@FMChimera Exactly. Ask a friend to abandon his former life to give all to this dream. He faithfully does for four years! And later, yeah, you’re not important. Very disappointing in the spirit of this project.
@@FMChimera If we were to be honest, would this project even exist without Alix?
Alix seemed changed after he came back from France. It is good to hear that he and his father are doing fine. Thanks Steve, for that respectful send off, I just hope Alix will get a chance to sail on Arabella some time down the line. It can be really hard to walk away from a passion project like this, so we need to respect that he did. It serves no one to speculate on the "real reasons" or to invent drama. If Alix has something to say, I am sure he can do that. Some viewers crave that "internet drama" that probably isn't there. I would love a short video with Alix signing off as it were, but that is just me being greedy with my need for closure.
Hi Oscar… I respect your thoughts but respectfully remind you that Alix devoted YEARS of time to this project and who knows how much was compensated. It was clearly a project of passion for his friend. For Steve, the payoff was clear. For Alix? Devote years and live in uncertainty as to the outcome. How is this selfish?
@@salteedawg I think you misunderstood Oscar's comment
@@salteedawg Ummm... The only one I intimated was being selfish was me, for wanting a more robust closure. I think you must have misinterpreted what I was trying to communicate. At no point did I call anyone involved with the Arabella project selfish, but some viewers tend to carve and even demand more information than they are entitled to. There are undisclosed reasons for Alix's departure, but to me, it sounded like Alix's priorities have shifted and that Stephen respected that AND respected his friend's privacy. That is why I wrote that if Alix has a differing viewpoint, I am sure he will voice it. But much as with the fake drama drummed up over the ownership of Arabella, I think the need for some internet drama has gotten the better of some viewers.
It just seems Alix signing off in some fashion would have been more in character for this journey, but it's a choice--his choice.
I wish Alex all the best. I hope we get to see him again.
Always impressed with seeing a little into the mind of Steve, as he wrestles through choices of lumber, how to cut, what not to include. How to finish. Steve is a master woodworker. Sonya
Thank you for the kind words, Sonya! Hope we see you for the live event on February 11. Happy Friday!
It does my heart good to see old wood get new life, and you are truly doing the wood proud. All the best to Alix in whatever direction his life takes him.
I was with a heavy heart that I heard Alix has decided to step back from the project. It was a tremendous honor to have met him and to have shared some time working with Alix on Arabella. His camera work and editing established the look and feel of this RUclips channel early on. The channel has done so much to build the Arabella community which has transformed the project overall. The project has become well enough established that it will move along fine without Alix but I hope he realizes how profoundly his early contributions made all of this possible.
He will be missed.
I loved Alex's little cameo on the Tally Ho project. I hope some where down the line we get to see Alix on some other adventure. He truly was great to watch in the skills he provided for this build.
how could I have missed that.. which episode please?
One of the things I enjoyed most in the earlier days of the channel was the development of Alix's skills. Best wishes to him and his family for the future.
Re Alex: that was a very mature, dignified and appropriate explanation. Good job man - props to you.
Yes, it was!! well said, David. DD
So sad to hear Alex has left the project but life moves on for him and we all wish him the best. It will be strange not to see him in the building of Arabella .Love the project and will continue to watch till the end. So fascinating.Best Regards from the U.K.
Thank you, Keith!!
Yes, it’s always impressive how Steve handles these things - without judgement or ego. I wish Alix all the best, there will forever be a part of him in Arabella, like all those who’ve worked on her.
Wow 200 episodes. I've been here from the beginning. What a wild ride. The blending of people, skills, woods and techniques. There are so many things about this love of sailing boats. The puppies always make the project fun.
I have I think the first t-shirt they sold..
Alix! Take care and I wish you and your family the best. It’s been a joy watching you grow as a boat builder all these years. Thanks for sharing! ❤️
Happy Friday Guys. Thanks for the update about Alix moving on, fully understand the privacy side of things , If you are watching Alix, good luck with your new direction I hope all goes well for you in the future. It seems like yesterday when I discovered your channel through the lead pouring videos, to think she will be launched next year is amazing, how time has flown . Once again, thank you for allowing us to experience a life we would never have .
Also wishing Alix well on his path through life. He was a great personality to have on screen and in voice-over and we'll miss him.
I have cleared land, built homes, barns, and sheds. My wife and I raised four children and a lot of livestock. Along that journey we have moved and said goodbye to a lot of projects, seen livestock fulfill their days and die, watched our children marry and move on, and sadly gone back to see some structures not cared for and succumb to nature. After it all, Robert Balzer's famous line says it best, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans." Arabella is already a fine boat (nobody would mistake her for a garden shed.) Alex can take pride in his undeniable contribution, and I wish him well. I'm near the end of a great life with both regrets and joy. If I could sum it all up, it would be two things: 1) Know where your ride ends up, then, 2) hold tight and enjoy the ride, even the roller coaster (like Arabella) won't last forever.
Well put, thanks so much for sharing that. Cheers to you, and happy Friday.
Well Said
Really well said 🤙🏽
I’ve been watching Acorn to Arabella since they started cutting down trees. I loved that it was two old friends working together building a boat, especially since neither of them had ever been on a boat. It was a pleasure to watch these guys every weekend. I’ve shared their channel with a lot of my friends and even bought a Tee Shirt from them. I’ve really enjoyed the whole journey.
I don’t know about everyone else but ever since that conversation they had where Steve declared the boat was always his, I’ve always felt like Alix was ripped off. It took some shine away from the project. I still watch it but really feel sorry for Alix. I hope he’s okay. I hope his father is okay. I also hope that their friendship will be restored at some point.
All the best Alix.
That episode definitely ruined the story for me. I have been here to see a dream become a reality more than I am to se a boat being built. There is just no story now. Its just Steve crowdfunding a boat.
All the best to Alex on his journey. The boat looks incrementally more complete with each episode.
That’s sad news around Alex , he will be really missed , however I’m still super excited for the upcoming months , the project is changing so much and each week we can all see the effort that has been poured into the boat. Ps ice beard is cool!!
Wish Alix the all the best! I hope Anne is well!
Thanks, Mat. I’m doing ok. Lonely without my sweet Maye, but Akiva is on doggie companion duty. -Anne
Thanks for the update on Alix. Glad all is well. Glad it clear that he's gone from the project so I don't have to wonder when he'll be back. Really enjoy this channel !
I hope very much that Alex makes some guest appearances at some point. He was such a bright spirit to have on the series. Also I hope that this hasn't affected your friendship.
Amazing! This project is just so inspiring to watch… I look forward to every Friday.
So great to see that vintage wood from Victoria blend into the lumber from your family property. Gives a warm feeling of legacy over time. Fair winds to Alex as well.
All the best to Alex and his family. I continue to be impressed with Steve's craftsmanship and knowledge. And the work done by Ann and Ben to deliver the content each week is really special. Thank you!
Thank you for the kind words!
Sounds like a perfect application for Dynema rigging.
Yes. Those old wooden blocks are sooo 1930's
Agree with dynena, but I'm sure the synthetic evangelists have made an impassioned case. If there's anything this project has in abundance it's advice.
Dyneema is easier, cheaper, stronger, longer lasting (if done correctly), and readily available. Just not traditional.
Nothing better than using reclaimed wood on a project. No matter how bad a boat is when I see it abandoned outside, I look at it and find pieces I could use.
Congratulations for all you've accomplished . It takes real determination to get up and get going when it's really cold outside . We've watched you working thru the seasons , we seen an amazing project come together piece by piece and in a way you've become a friend we check in on each week ...thank you Steve !
First, I've always loved and admired everything about this channel and the work involved. And Steve, it was your family's lumber, shop facilities, and labor that went (and still goes) into it. However, Alex did give two years of support and labor into this project as well. I hope he was, or can be, compensated in some way for that too. Thanks.
Indeed, he was and is.
@@AcornToArabella you’ve underscored the fact that Alix was financially compensated a few times, but only safely buried in comments. It feels like sour grapes. You say you want to respect his privacy; then do that. Don’t cast shade on Alix with carefully placed hearts and comments like this one. Y’all got yourselves into whatever agreement you’re in, and are clearly unhappy with. File it under “mistakes made, lessons learned” and move on.
Another good episode. Love the recycling/reusing of the old timbers.
Caught you early on and will continue the journey. I’m amazed at the skill base you’ve absorbed and the results so far from falling trees to varnishing finished pieces. Truly magical.
Thank You for sharing. Have a great 2022.
I think I'm going to really really like how this interior morphing into shape
- now I'm extra motivated to start redesigning mine to try and build it in next winter
Looking good Guy's, wish Alix all the best in his new venture's , Stay Safe !!!.
So very enjoyable to watch Steve's meticulous approach to planning and executing the companionway. Truly remarkable and satisfying to observe the conception of ideas that lead to the creation of a necessary component, yet to do so with a result beyond practical with inherent beauty. Way cool!
The best to Alix and his journey. Awesome episode. exciting! exciting! 2023!
Always know the weekend is nearly here when the video is uploaded. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, Andrew! Happy Friday.
part of my Friday ritual!
They videos usually come exactly when I end my friday work day!
Godspeed, Alix! I hope you enjoy what’s next. Much love to you and yours from Western Montana.
Good luck in all you do Alex!! Wow it's hard to believe you are talking about launching the build is awesome to watch but I can't wait to see your adventures!!
Great to see you repurposing Victoria’s teak. Beautiful color to the old wood. Absolutely beautiful. Good job Stephen.
Good update. Lovely to be back with the woodwork after the glass and metal work.
We agree!
Thanks for posting and sharing. Thanks for the update re Alix. Best wishes to you all. VERY interesting to hear about potential launch in 2023.
Best wishes to Alix and his family. Thanks for that update. The Arabella team is doing a great job, thanks for allowing us along.
All the best from England. I love the project been with you from day 1 ....."Onwards and upwards". " life is ever changing". Andy .
Every man has his way... Good luck to you both!
tThank you for the updates...nice to hear the phrase 'launching next year' and good to know all is well with Alix. Hoping nothing but the best for him and his new endeavors. Your videos are so professional that they simply tower over 98% of what you see on the RUclips. Steve's intros/outros and musical interludes are always tasteful and seem to fit the theme for the day. And the footage reflects pre-thought camera angles, interesting shots, detailed/close-up as well as pulled back shots, consistent lighting, and so forth. It all goes toward the professionalism of these episodes. The details remaining are going to be very interesting; look forward every Friday morning to the newest episode. Congratulations as you approach #200 and as you approach the Oggin'...
Sad to hear about Alex but looking forward to seeing what you get up to from here on in your determination and drive to get to the water is really great good luck
Very excited to continue to watch the forward progress!
Im always amazed how well that old wood cleans ups and looks so good!
It’s magic!
I absolutely love the idea of the channel following the boat through future generations.
Also the best wishes to Alex for whatever happens.
You guys are absolutely amazing. Thank you for taking me on this journey with you. Truly appreciated 🕊️❤️🙏
All the best Alex, be well and prosper.
Steve, you are one bulldog of a man.
To bring such a vision to this stage is testament to your patience and attitude and true nature.
Thanks for the glimpse at how determination can change the world.
So enjoy your craftsmanship in the complex boat building process. To reuse the wood from Victoria in imaginative ways is inspiring. Watching your creation in this design and build segment is just fascinating to me! Farewell, Alix!
beautiful work, beautiful boat, beautiful people, all of you.
thanks a lot for letting us join you every week and be the witnesses of your journey. can't wait to see arabella sailing, but at the same time i'm sure i'll miss all the woodworking stuff, i'm learning a lot. greetings from argentina.
Thank you very much!
Started rewatching some of the early episodes. Amazing to see how much progress has been made. Adore AtA. I'll try and join the stream in Feb.
Awesome, Steve! Looking forward to it!
Looking great Steve
Well I can't believe that I have been here to enjoy every episode and I am so glad to have discovered your project so many months ago. Thanks to you I have been able to follow the rebuild of Tally Ho and the Ceiba project in Costa Rica as well so thank you for that as the incredibly skilled craftsman/ craftswomen just blow me away. Life goes on for us all, I don't know anyone who hasn't faced hurdles, you stated your feelings for Alix and the situation well, so give yourself some credit for that as well as being quite talented with your hands. Looking forward to the rest of the adventure as it unfolds and the game between the Bills and Chiefs on Sunday, GO BILLS!
Looks good! Stay warm.
I enjoy watching this project from week to week. Steve is an amazing craftsman. Thank you for the update on Alix. Alix was a big part of getting hooked on this journey. Go well Alix.
Success comes to those who persevere. Well done, keep up the good work.
Cheers, Alix. Take care of yourself and I hope to see you again someday.
Been a great journey so far, can't wait each week to see what progress you are making and who it makes her more like a boat. Congrats on the upcoming 200th episode.
Thanks for sharing your journey with us. What you all produce and how far you have come with the project is amazing. I look forward to the rest of the journey and, one day, not too far away, seeing that footage of Arabella making way, under full sail, in calm seas.
That’s a nice thought, David!
Oiling the ladder was really good to watch. Always interesting. Best regards to Alix.
I really like how you shot Steve working in this one. This is one of my favorite videos on the channel.
Also those stairs are gorgeous. I love the design; especially the handles. Beautiful work.
Thanks, Robert!
A while ago I watched my first episode of A to A. It was after the lead pour and I was excited to go back to the first one and binge watch the rest. I expected by the time I got to the last one I would see the boat sailing. That was 2 years ago! But it has been fascinating to watch weekly since. I can't wait for 2023 to see the boat in the water. All keep well and keep safe 🇻🇨
Thanks for being here, Len!
Alix if you happen to read this please know this. The channel is simply not the same since you stopped shooting video and editing. I am not throwing shade on anyone but your style is what kept us coming back and subscribing. I miss your intro and dedication as seen in your editing. You were an excellent balance to Steve and made a great team while it lasted. Your contribution cannot be lessened by a very few ignorant people so head held high. I wish you the very best for your future and as Leo says I offer a Massive Massive thank you.
Agreed, nuff said
Guy’s don’t give up no matter what!
Amazing project. I believe that you will survive this project 👍
I love the episodes and your craftsmanship
Keep going WOW
🇮🇪🇮🇪👍👍👍
It’s been a blast following along with you guys. 🇨🇦
Thanks Alix for your contribution.
When i started watching it was "those two guys building a boat" because i searched on keels for boats and that was just weeks after you released that specific video.
It has been a joy so far and with change comes a little sadness. But, on the last video Alix appeared in, he did look healthy and happy.
Cheers man. Thanks for the journey. Will probably see you featuring an episode way into the future.
On the water in 2023! It has been a great journey and I am glad it will continue indefinitely. Greetings from San Diego, CA. Maybe we will see you on the water some time in the future! :-)
I have been with you since the pour of the keel. 200 episodes! Wow - that’s quite a milestone. I restore antique airplanes on my shop. I enjoy watching you solve problems. I, too, have to solve problems every day. My restorations take from one and half to two and a half years. The reward when it takes to the skies is indescribable. I imagine the day Arabella takes to the waters will be more than equally awesomely.
Where's the channel man? I'd love to see that!
I have watched every episode from the time you were pouring the lead keel and it's been kind of a nice way to wind down at the end of the weeks work schedule with a coffee and the sigh of relaxation :)
That’s a sweet thought, thanks for sharing it, Vincent.
I'd been wondering where Alix had got to. Glad to hear he's well, but sorry to see his involvement come to an end. Hopefully one day we'll see him back - I'd be amazed if we didn't see him on Arabella at some point when she's under sail.
Sorry the hear that Alix is no longer with the project he was a solid part of the build and I will miss him but I am also am looking forward to the future of Arabella, thanks for sharing.
Dude - dig your videos. Thanks for not filling up every empty non-dialogue second with royalty free cheese. Refreshing AF.
Best way to start each Friday is getting motivated from your videos. Sorry to hear about Alix moving on, hope he can be involved in the launch next year.
Fair winds and following seas to Alix. He'll be missed!
Really nice Stephen. Love how the mahogany turned out, especially with the oil. Cheers, Chuck
What a Beautiful work in progress👍
You most definitely have a boat! Just awesome workmanship - you should be very proud.
It was touching to watch your skillful hands transform Victoria's mahogany into the companion way. The spirit of Victoria will always be present in Arabella. keep up the good work, Steve!
Happy Arabella day everyone!
🎉Happy Friday!
Annie B! You are a delight to see on camera XXX! Steve, so good to hear your roadmap. This channels video is one of the highlights of my week.Thank you for sharing this journey.
I too started watching about episode 4.....the audacity of a non sailor to even dream this big drew me right in....I am no sailor or wood worker but the hard work and tenacity has kept me entertained for years! I have no doubt Arabella is will be sailing for years to come ,
Been here since day one. Not exactly sure why or how, I’m not a boat guy, but it is totally thanks to the tubes algorithms. I’ve learned so much about building wooden boats because of this channel. You keep me in suspense every week. I will be here until the end. Thank you so much for this experience. I hope you see sail this boat and see your adventures!!!
The boat is beautiful as always. It's been a crazy 4 years (that I've been watching). Best of luck to Alix. You guys did so much together in the early years. His blood sweat and tears are in those planks too. Carve him a small tribute somewhere in the boat to honor his contribution :D.
Sad to hear that Alix has officially left the project. I wish him luck in his future endeavors. With out Alix it would have never happened to the level that is has. Good luck Alix.
I also started watching and played catch up from the lead pouring. Love watching and look forward to when you can put Arabella into the water.
Congrats on the accomplishments and milestones. So eager for what the future holds.
Glad you're on the journey with us, charles. Thanks for being here for the milestones!
Great episode. Thanks
I’ve followed you since the lead pour. Keep up with the good work I’m very much looking forward to the launch
All the best Steve 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇺🇸🇺🇸
Your hearts and eyes are true, hand on the tiller planning the next parts of your lives. Do carry on with gusto!
The aroma of that hundred year old timber while working it must be amazing.
I like the smell of the piles of stuff yet to be processed… smells like home with all this boaty smells. -Anne
I think we all expected the news today, sad, but as said things change and things move on! That said, the big launch party next year we all expect Alex to be a part of, it’s as much his day as anyone else’s!
12:31 - Back east over Christmas one year and a buddy was finishing the rebop of his MGTF engine and installing it; well below freezing, had a wood stove in the shed which did a nice job. Enjoyable.
It has been a privilege to watch, it's not a dying trade it's art.
In my realm, it is certainly not a dying trade. Thank you for saying so, it’s important to everyone in my industry.
