It took me 61 years to become organized and meticulous and I still struggle with it. Aladino seems to have this skill as a natural born tallent...intellegent, well organized and meticulous with every movement of this retrofit. Your editing and filming skills, music are just fantastic!

I'm building a 10ft dinghy which I started 11 years ago and is maybe 2/3rds built...
I have some "blue water" experience racing down the California coast (Coastal Cup). Even only 50 miles off shore the weather and seas can be very rough. I think you are wise in replacing those old rotted deck beams. A disaster at sea usually is the culmination of many small things. Breaking that string of small things can keep you safe. Therefore, the extra cost and work is well worth it in my opinion.
Undoubtedly the right decision to replace the deck beams. Aladino’s explanation as to why using epoxy is too big a compromise hits the nail on the head exactly. Good thinking !

I like Aladino's style, he employs a surgical grade technique. He never has to use brute force because he selects the right tools, this avoids causing more harm that adds more work. Sure, its time consuming to be that accurate, but in the end I think it saves time/money by avoiding re-work. In the long run this type of repair demands precision, finesse, and great attention to detail. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

I like the thoughtful and objective way in which Aladino is carrying out the restoration of the sailboat, passion for the project will certainly end up giving the best results although the financial part may delay the project.

One of the things I love most about your videos is how well you two seem to get along. This would be impressive of any couple living a normal life for a few months. But you two have been living and working together in a small space for a few years, so this is mind-boggling to me. But I admire it so much.

I just continue to get more and more amazed at your level of knowledge and skill (both of you)....I am learning a lot more about boat construction than I ever wanted to know :-) but knowledge is good...
My late Dad used to that " A day without learning is a wasted day".
As a 69 y.o. man, I can tell you I never wasted a day in my life. My Dad was a wise man.
You two are an inspiration to any would-be fixer-uppers. There really was no excuse for me to delay fixing the (hidden!) plumbing in our newly-acquired old caravan. Not exactly a boat refurbishment, but on the outer edge of my comfort zone. I kept thinking "What would Aladino do?"
So I actually did it all today. And it works!
Maya, you are lucky that you found a young man who actually knows what he is doing instead of one who thinks he knows but really doesn't. Also one who isn't afraid to admit it when he doesn't know something and seeks help. I find that young men with these attributes are fairly rare these days.
Absolutely most people don’t realize what they don’t know until later in life, most accidents and injuries are males 17-25 this is why insurance companies see them as high risk, more brawn than brains

It's obvious that you are trying hard to do this right and create interesting and engaging videos. Doing that on top of the refit project must be difficult and it is very much appreciated.

Watching Maya’s process of coping with the reality of what they are doing, and the conflict between what she believed and what is reality, was the most interesting and a bit uncomfortable to watch. The tension between you two was palpable, thanks for not editing that out. Clearly your new woodworking skills (well done first creation) will be an asset to the refit.

Aladino can work on my boat anytime LOL . I can't afford him as he is too meticulous but truly a caring and skilled tradesman .
It's amazing how clean Aladino works, how clean everything is.
If it helps, Aladino’s right about the need for rot damaged wood to have enough viable lignin fibres remaining for epoxy stabilisation to be an effective repair in structural wood.
Replacing the gammy deck beams now makes such good sense. Deck’s as opened as it needs to be, you’re in a dry shed, you have power on tap and you’ll only have to go through the pain of removing the interior once….which you’ve done now anyway.

Ahoy Magic Carpet! We love to watch your videos. We both agree with the many fine comments already shared - your videography, storyline and production quality are second to none. Our sailing days are long over - crossed the Atlantic in 1978, through the Caribbean in '79 and lived aboard on Vancouver Island in 1983/84. I made a bet with my wife that we'd leave to cross the Pacific before I turned 30. I lost, so we sold the boat and had six kids instead!! But, now we can live vicariously through your videos. One often undervalued strength in relationships is the ability to argue with each other, not to "win", but rather to convince _both_ parties on the best way forward. We sensed that you two had that argument upon Maya's return!? We cycled trough the Netherlands the year before Covid so we found the end of your European saga most entertaining. You guys made the right decision in removing the rot. With epoxy you're not really fixing the problem, just slapping a band-aid over the top and hoping for the best. With fresh new beams you'll have the peace of mind in knowing she's structurally sound and ready to take on anything for many years to come.

Maya, I realize it's a large financial hit and tough to swallow, but rest assured Aladino is making his recommendation to replace the deck beams on both his inclination for quality workmanship, as well as the structure of the boat itself, and by extension, both your safety on the open waters long term. I commend you on your desire to understand why, as well as your support, as Aladino makes his decisions. I just love listening to your warm, melodious speech. It is so cool to watch is the way you both approach the bad news with a calm, measured, supportive manner. Aladino, you are an excellent teacher. You have an extraordinary way of explaining and demonstrating why you do what you do. Together you are an unstoppable team!

You are exactly right about stainless steel and bronze. Stainless steel is subject to corrosion in wet anaerobic environments.
Do it right is a motto to live by. In a shed with the deck opened up is the time to replace the deck beams for sure.
Another good motto to always keep in mind is: Why is there never time (and/or money) to do it right, but there is always time to do it over?

The Swiss in Aladino shines through as I see the attention to meticulous detail and precision he applies to his approaches. Do it right do it once.

Aladino is quite right, now is the only time you can replace those things, epoxy may be a half decent fix but when you are in heavy seas it might come back to haunt you. Do it once and do it right. You're going around our amazing globe, it isn't friendly. My friend Tony Bullimore was in the around the world race, single handed. He accepted a keel that his friend and boat builder was worried about and told him. Tony didn't have the money to upgrade to what his designer suggested. In the ice pack region in the artic, he lost his keel and capsized and was inside the boat for three days in a tiny oxygen bubble before the Australian navy rescued him, the furthest an Australian navy vessel had ever been on that particular route. God bless Tony who was a remakable character, but this could have been avoided, always go ship shape and Bristol fashion, Bristol fashion is another story! His book is called "Saved", well worth a read.
It is not always as cut and dried as well of course you should replace with new of course I am speaking of in general rather than specifics. In some cases repair technology has advanced so much that repairs are actually stronger than the original.
Not quiet the same principle but new materials have come on the scene rendering original materials obsolete. Of course being new then a lot are cost prohibitive but Dyneema is replacing wire carbon fibre is replacing fibre glass wireless is replacing wired etc.

Realistically with Covid still being a problem the chances of setting off on your big journey are pretty slim for at least a year if not longer so taking your time making the boat perfect is the only option at the moment which will pay off tremendously when you do eventually continue your journeys and in the mean time you have a project that keeps your RUclips channel rich in content and your lives full of meaningful activity.
Yes, as annoying as it can be and although it's a huge undertaking, it is the _perfect_ time to spend all the time the boat needs to be ready and to make it better than new. Maybe taking a break somewhere along the way is advised, but I'm sure there are many people who would gladly switch places if offered a chance to dive into something personally meaningful that can be done in more or less isolation - even so, they're not alone at all!
Hi, you know, I am sailing in the Denmark's Südsee. This afternoon I ancored in a very nice natural harbor...and then a interesting sailboat came in ... by you I learned to study the lines of Cape George boats and so I at once recognized, that a Cape George 36 ancored beside me.

I'm sincerely impressed on the surgical precision Aladino uses in his work. Replacement of the deck beams is the ONLY WAY TO ENSURE THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY of Magic Carpet II. I honestly would not want to go through a project like this. And, I'm unsure why you would want to "use epoxy on the beams and call it a day." PLEASE ALLOW ME TO QUOTE - S4E1 (6:01) you wanted a "PROJECT BOAT IN NEED OF WORK". Unfortunately you received what you were looking for... I've been watching this channel and you both are very talented. So this "PROJECT" should not be anything that you cannot complete. Your talent & skillsets have proven you can do this job. I will certainly learn a lot from this Project!!!! Thank you in ADVANCE! Be Patient & Stay SAFE!
Today you are young and have the time to :do it correctly", two years from now in a storm you won't be as young and you won't have the opportunity to do it over. Bravo to you both.
There are times when I see Aladino checking the deck beams and saying "that looks like a strong beam, just as long as you don't look too closely at the rot. I also agree this is the right thing to do. You have the time and opportunity to build it back better than new and I'm happy to see that you're taking this seriously.

Probably one of many with the same sentiment: condolences on the extra cost and time you were hoping to avoid. But you’ve got what most people don’t . . . an Aladino. The silver lining is this is gonna make for some great episodes.
In the end, it’s the right call sure. All the way around. You have done a great job of pulling people in and making them feel vested. Yes some people like just the sailing and adventure but I am sure a large part of your audience knows it’s all part of the same lifestyle. Boats are demanding partners in adventure.
Really looking forward to watching the work, how you plan to do it and how you actually do it (they aren’t always the same, are they?). Pretty sure the water will still be there when you are ready (and another silver lining is everything will hopefully by the time you are ready to cast off).

As a carpenter, I have repaired rotted floor joist ends by bolting similar sized timber to each side of the existing, together with digging out any rot if minor and flooding with preservative, or if worse, replacing just the end, sandwiched between and bolted through the new pieces each side. No need to remove any beams if you do this, using sufficiently long added pieces and three or four bolts, and you get something that is stronger than the original!
Though removing whole floor joists is much harder than your deck beams, so you may be right to do as you have decided anyway, just an alternative suggestion.
While sistering the beams would be a realistic choice for a workboat you wouldn’t want to do it in this case because the beams are visible from below. You wouldn’t want the ceiling in your bedroom or living room at home to look like that would you?

Some advice. Get good quality knee pads for both of you. Good cushioning in the front and no bunching up behind the joint. I'm at a stage where I wish I had used knee pads more often back in the day.

For the small amount of crown on your deck beams, cutting them from solid stock is more practical than laminating them.
Laminations also add strength!
That is the reason guitar bodies are made from several pieces of wood, and glued together. Much stronger.
I watch another RUclips channel called Huub vlogs and he's doing boatwork too. But with him I can't stop screaming at my screen with Aladino I've the feeling I have to take notes. Great work and replacing the beams seems like the right thing to do .
