Thanks for posting this. I'm about to move in a couple of weeks, rent a 10 foot truck and tow my car. I was little nervous but this video has given me more confidence.
Just made my drive to barksdale with a 26 footer towing my vehicle. This is good stuff. You are spot on about taking your time. There is no need to be in a rush. Some advice I would add is to stop at truck stops to refuel as they have a lot more space to maneuver around. i am a fan of loves myself. Also if you are traveling with someone in another car behind you, when you flaah your blinker, let them get over first. This way they can let you over without you having to deal with jerks or blind spots
We're on our way starting today from Fort Bragg, NC to Fort Fort Huachuca, Az. One uhaul with car hitch. One jeep with my daughter, her 17mo and her 9yo and Jaxson, the dog! Pray for us!
Shout out to Bragg! Grew up in the military. My dad did 5 separate tours there. Love that place. Hate they renamed it. It will always be Bragg to me. How did the drive go? How was navigation within cities?
Hi! I really like how you're just mellow and taking your time. So many drivers out there are in a big hurry and just don't know why. They don't let anyone in and just speed everywhere. I so wish everyone would just slow down, be courteous, and just take it easy. I don't drive very often, but whenever I do, I see people going at least 50% above the speed limit, always tailgating each other, not letting each other in. It's terrible. With all the lights everyone has to stop at, you're not going to get anywhere faster by speeding. I always seem to catch up to the guy who passed me at a light later on.
LT here. I appreciate you giving us the warm and fuzzy about this - gonna be my first time on monday towing my merc...haha. Always lean on your NCO's!!
Drove this 1,000+ miles from Texas to Wisconsin. The tow mirrors on the UHaul are super helpful. Overall, only get it if you absolutely need to because we were averaging 300 miles per tank of gas. Full tank was over $100.
Just finished driving a 26' U-Haul with a front-wheel auto transport from Atlanta, Georgia to Raleigh, NC. An I have to say it was beautiful, plus thanks to you and this video the ride wasn't jerky even when going through construction areas and the tips were gold. I couldn't feel the auto transport unless I was in the city and only because of the length of truck plus auto transport. Thanks for this video😇
Great informational video..! U-Haul should pay you for this video to be required viewing by their customers. Some of the last “decent” iron to come out of Detroit, before it left Michigan. I was gonna say it was a 1973 vintage, looks like it is pretty nice shape. Thank you sir.
Thank you, Brother-in-Green. Your video gave me everything I needed to know - unlike some other dueschebag that labeled his video "How to drive a U-Haul with Tow Dolly" and provided nothing but an advertisement to hire his movers. You're awesome!
I deal with these all the time. Within the first 30 to 60 miles tighten the straps down on the wheels. Use the mirrors and the bottom mirror look at the two rear tires amd make sure they are equal distance. Damn he actually mention the one thing people always forget. To check the straps and chains on your vehicle.. oh and uhaul only takes unleaded...
I'M a commercial Local truck driver. Good advice. While your at wawa don't forget to we we, LOL. I saw the 55 MPH sine on the trailer and it made me realize I need to check the speed limit in each state. Thanks

Thank you so much for this video. I will be driving from Charlotte, NC TI Tampa, FL in a couple of weeks with my Teslas on the trailer and I was so nervous.
@Mink: That was not what I experienced, the car was solid the whole way I would say it's possible but not likely for the trailer just to sway on its own I most definitely get why you would be nervous after hearing something like that but I wouldn't worry much about that just take your time relax and drive in your comfort zone
I’m about to buy a 74 Gran Torino and will be using the auto transport from U-Haul. I have an F 250 and have towed U-Haul’s 6x12 trailer with no issues from FL to TN. If all goes well I’ll be towing the car for 3 1/2 hours and since you have a impala I’m now more confident that the Gran Torino will fit on the auto transport. Thank you for the video!!!
I have to haul a car from Ohio to Texas In Thursday that nervous clip of you was funny that’s me driving in the snow 😬. Definitely informative video thanks for the tips and thank you for you service.
Hey Sarge! First of all, thank you for your service from a fellow Army Vet. Did my time from the late 70's until '98 I have to be honest, I was never curageous about towing anything! Can't explain why, but for some reason, I always got that gnawing feeling I won't clear my turn or have huge problems getting into a gas station, or worse, doing a rest stop. But after listening to your video, it made a lot of sense. Wifey and I are moving to NC from MD, which is only 420 miles. I reserved a 10 footer and I have a mini van which is no where near that monsyer car you got (LOL). But I will make sure I get all the details before I take off. From what I understood, does the UHaul personel lock and load your vehicle for you? Again! Thx and carry on!
If you’re normally a reckless driver, be someone else while you do this. 😂😂😂😂 Agree with the just let people over rule. Let’s all just be courteous drivers!
I towed my Tracker with my van for the first time. Side Streets is actually scarier then the freeway. On the Freeway I couldn't even tell I was pulling something. I didn't encounter any long freeway sweeper turns did you during your tow?
With an auto transport in the back, I'm curious about the turning. I have never done this before and I've been watching videos just to kind of get an idea of what to expect. I think driving straight will allow me to get used to the vehicle in terms of learning the feel and when to brake and what not, but nobody's touched upon the turning portion with a transport. Do you have to make wider turns? Is it just regular? What are some tips to you have to be safer with them?
@Cianime Brand: My advice on turning would be to take your time and use your mirrors, the bottom portion of the mirror in particular ....I'm not sure what size truck you're going to be using the longer the turck the more swing out you will need but you don't want to cut tuns too sharp and use that bottom portion of the mirror to see the wheels of the trailer as you make your turn, I also look at this part of the mirror first then the reg mirror and then the bottom again when changing lanes, when you're turning into a spot like a gas station most times the truck will be parallel to the pump but the trailer may still be to the side so when you pull out go straight a little then make your turn giving the trailer time to align wit the truck......bottom line use your mirrors go slow when taking turns and in tight spots (its easier to make corrections and see things before they happen when you do) stay calm don't let people rush you just because they're impatient, the feel for how to make turns with the trailer will come to you quicker than you think and you'll be whipping that truck like a pro before you know it. Come back and let me know how the trip went....I Preciate the support!
How did the move go girl!? I’m planning on driving a 15’ with my Camaro from Dallas tx, to Oklahoma City all by myself! First time driving a truck that big with a car on the back.
Great video man. I will tow my Tracker behind my van soon and I already drive 60 MPH in my van to save fuel. I will drop my speed to 55 MPH when I tow my Tracker. Should be easy work for my van. TRackers only 2500 pounds and doesn't need a dolly. Courtesy is nearly dead now. That's why I like camping and off roading. When I run into people in the middle of nowhere when I'm off roading everyone waves at me. I think people with that hobby all just want to be away from hectic life.
@John Drives Anything: that's light work for the van, the V10 will barely feel that.....I take it easy in the truck too V10's will drink up all the gas fast if you let it lol
@@sergeantthomas3295 Oh yeah man 1 full throttle run will cost you 1 gallon of fuel! Gotta baby it the whole tank to not get 9mg lol. I made another video on the people not helping you out on youtube video.
I have drove a 20 foot box truck with no issues but I’m terrified to tow an 8 foot car on a 10 foot box truck ! I’m worried about stopping distance and turns on city streets. And lane changing.
Look ahead for stopping. Pay attention to the traffic lights. If you are unable to stop for a red light, LAY ON THE HORN!. In Pennsylvania, some yellow lights are 2-3 seconds on a road with 45-50 mph speed limits. There is no way to stop a big truck in that time. Many times I’ve had to lay on the air horn.(and each time, I had dropped my speed well before the traffic light). Lane changing? Always give atleast 2 lengths of your vehicle and trailer. If passing a big truck, 2 tractor trailer lengths. If you cut in front of me, and for any reason, you have to stop, and I can’t, I’m going to crush YOU. I will not swerve and kill someone else. When you have to pass a truck, step on the gas and pass. Even thought you DON’T cut in front of the truck, put your indicator on, leave it on until you actually come over. Go to an empty parking lot, try to find a puddle of water, go through it and make a hard turn. See how far the trailer tire mark is from the van tire mark. Figure about 4 feet. So any time you make a turn, the trailer tires will be 4 feet closer. Remember, you are longer. Practice backing up. Do it SLOWLY. Watch trucking videos on backing. The shorter the trailer, the harder it is. Check BOTH mirrors when backing. When the trailer disappears in one mirror, check the other. On sunny days, look for the shadow of your trailer. You can see how close other drivers are. Remember, when checking your mirrors, USE BOTH, top and bottom. When changing lanes on a 3 lane highway from the right lane, a car in the far left lane might be going to the middle lane at the same time(it happens to us all the time). In construction Zones, SLOW DOWN. As soon as you get in the zone, check your right mirror and see where the trailer tires are and move so they’re just barely touching the line. Also check the dash or guages BEFORE you enter the zone. Signs that say, No trucks or trailers in the left lane, apply to you. Know how high your truck or van is. Drive with HEADLIGHTS on all the time. Not daylight running lights. You want drivers to see you, so they don’t pull out right in front of you because they didn’t see you til the last second. In rain or especially fog, you definitely want to have tail lights on, which if you only are relying on daytime running lights, no taillights! When you rent the truck or/and trailer, turn on the headlights and 4 ways. If someone is with you have them step on the brakes. Make sure ALL the lights work. 2 of the most overlooked lights, are the yellow ones ON THE TRAILER FENDER!. When you are making a turn at night, this is the one light you need to see where your trailer is!!!When you put the vehicle on the trailer, and strap it down, go down a road about 40 mph, then jam on the brakes! Now go back and check all the straps. Better to do it right away than on the highway. Good luck. U-haul and budget trucks are on the top ten worst drivers list. Most have never driven anything this big and have no clue how to use mirrors or turn signals. Remember the extra 4 feet you need for every turn. Pay attention, especially at toll booths. Talking with a passenger or listening to music loud, things happen quickly because you weren’t paying attention to driving. Take the E-Z pass from your car and put it on the dash of the truck. Tape it. You don’t want the fine because you forgot.
Great advice Sergeant. When I left U-haul I didn't notice if both front wheels were strapped down. When we made our first stop for the night I noticed the driver's side was not strapped down. Not sure if it was supposed to be or not?
Thanks for great info. We plan moving from Massachusetts to Arizona with loaded uhaul truck and auto transport. Can I ask if I need to stop at weight station as commercial vehicles or I can bypass?
@Khoa Ngo: no need to stop at weigh stations you can bypass them, I'm happy I was able to help.....I pray you have a safe journey and thanks for watching!
So, you say twice to ask questions. So...I'm slow...i think...I'm about to do this myself for the first time in my life, and I am definitely anxious - what questions should be asked at uhaul when i go to pick up the truck and trailer? Also, most of my apprehension is with driving within a city, like driving through residential streets, making turns, getting onto the freeway and interstate interchanges. I'm not concerned about being on the road outside the city between cities, just within a city. I wished you talked more about that. That's what I am looking for most - navigating within cities.
What kind of mileage do you get with the 15’ while pulling a car? I’ll have the truck loaded as well. I’m just trying to get a ballpark so I can plan out fuel stops. Thanks for the tips and safe travels.
@rooby Roo: I couldn't tell you the gas mileage but I can tell you I didn't stop as often as I thought I would have to, if you keep your foot in it and if you are traveling alot of hills you will definitely have to stop often, it actually seemed pretty good on gas all things considered. Thanks for watching and safe travels to you too.
Thank you, sir for your service! I'm moving 8 hrs away. I'm towing my car and I'm nervous. But I'm also nervous about hooking the car and trailer up to the truck. Does Uhaul do that for you? Or will they i should say?
@Hrd4: When you pick up the trailer from Uhaul, you can have them hook it to your tow vehicle for you. It seems like it is something they are supposed to do, but if they don't, I would absolutely ask them to do so. During that time, ask every question you can think of. Some places are helpful and will give you all the info you need. Other places will hook you up, barely say a word, and send you on your way. Now I have never done it, but I would like to believe that if you bring your tow vehicle and the vehicle being towed, they will help in getting everything ready to tow for you and get everything unhooked when you return the equipment. As for your trip 8 hrs is relatively short take your time and keep calm, check your straps when you stop, when you pull into the gas station plan ahead on how you're going to get out without having to turn around and use your mirrors when pulling away from the pump and often on the road. Thank you for your appreciation, be safe and let me know how the trip went.
I don’t know all the details of your situation, but to my knowledge, they will not reimburse you. Make sure you verify with your transportation office.
this will be my first time driving a 16ft with a widebody dodge challenger on a tow, and i am alittle nervous because i will be by myself. is there a ton of swaying on the tow? I was going to hardly switch lanes. mostly stay to the right. I have to go from south florida to north jersey. Any recommendations are helpful.
The only thing I'm worried about pulling a Uhaul, is the recommended speed 55Mph?? So you basically will be driving 20 to 25MPH slower than the rest of the traffic, that's kinda dangerous
@johnbones6067: I did not have the car on-site when I picked up the trailer, but I would like to believe that if you did, they would help you load it and secure it at pickup and help you unload it at drop. off..
@@sergeantthomas3295 What I'm thinking of doing, because of my apprehension , is pick up the truck, bring it back to my place, go back to uhaul, link up the trailer with the car on, and then start the the hauling.
Try opening the ratcheting mechanism all the way by squeeing the bar in the middle of it. (This should allow you to disengage the teeth within the handle) then pull the handle all the way down to the open position, then give the strap a few tugs upward....I hope this helps!
@@sergeantthomas3295 I think I can imagine that, thanks my man! I saved your video to my auto transport playlist too. Because yours was the best info I could find.
I'm afraid to do this. I'm 60 years old and I have to make a longish trip, but I can't drive a truck and my car at the same time unless I tow my car. I couldn't make the trip in one day. How do you manage stopping to rest/sleep? I'm traveling with a cat and a kid as well!
Can I get an advice? I'm doing the same thing, same truck and trailer with my car but I'm driving from Southeastern NY to College Station in Texas in January... You think it's possible? Safe? Tips or advice you could give me there?
@George J Marrero: Relax and take your time, even if that means driving a little slower than traffic sometimes, be aware of what other drivers near you are doing so you have time to react and always give yourself extra space to break.....safe travels 🙏🏾
I usually drive faster on the highway. I know the trucks can go ti 75, do you have to account go the recommended 55? Or is it safer to go a little faster? Let me know.
@Jay Don: I believe it's safer to go a little faster than the recommended 55 , but do what feels comfortable for you and what is safest for the conditions you are driving in. Keep in mind the faster you go the longer it will take to stop especially with all the weight you will be carrying and pulling, I hope I was able to help and that you make it to your destination safely.

@robertmccarty9951: Both front wheels should be strapped down
Thanks for great info.
@@sergeantthomas3295 It sounds great. Thanks again for all your thorough info and prayers.
I’m going from atl to Miami I need this lol
So, you say twice to ask questions. So...I'm slow...i think...I'm about to do this myself for the first time in my life, and I am definitely anxious - what questions should be asked at uhaul when i go to pick up the truck and trailer?
Also, most of my apprehension is with driving within a city, like driving through residential streets, making turns, getting onto the freeway and interstate interchanges. I'm not concerned about being on the road outside the city between cities, just within a city. I wished you talked more about that. That's what I am looking for most - navigating within cities.
Those chains are supposed to be connected together around the frame of the car
@user-kp6ud7ht4z: Correct!
Great info SERG, really had some good tip, as well as answer to my ??????
@sodasnacks: happy to help!
Great info but @4:34 there was a fire in the background, did you go check on them? Lol
@Santiago Rebollo: I didn't see them, I was too busy respecting the yield sign lol
Thank you very much for this
@Salty Texas C: Thank you for watching
Plan on pulling my 78 Chevy Nova from TX to WA. I’m curious for price.
Man I gta go from Louisiana to Virginia with the big boy truck and tow a car
great video!
Thank you!!
Thanks for the tips
Yeah definitely making me feel better about moving from Arizona to Washington because I want a uhaul and tow my car
how did it go im making the same drive
@@emilycasali3874 I haven't made the drive yet :/ I'm building some work experience here and then moving so maybe in a year or two
@@MixedCommunist i'm making the drive soon i'll update YOU then!
How much did this cost was it reasonable I’m looking to move from Va to Houston the same way.
I wear flip flops with socks too
@John Drives Anything: can't have the toes just hanging out like that, there is a time and a place for that 🤣
What are turns like? Dp you have to alter your turns at all? I will have a 10 foot u haul and towing my ford focus
will the army allow/reimburse me to fly back home and pick up my second car after i trailer u-haul my first car ?
I don’t know all the details of your situation, but to my knowledge, they will not reimburse you. Make sure you verify with your transportation office.
Thank you for this!!
That driver seat sure looks uncomfortable. Does not recline, right?
NCOIC of what? uhaul?
Great video. Did you get any trailer sway?
Thanks....no trailer sway at all!
this will be my first time driving a 16ft with a widebody dodge challenger on a tow, and i am alittle nervous because i will be by myself. is there a ton of swaying on the tow? I was going to hardly switch lanes. mostly stay to the right. I have to go from south florida to north jersey. Any recommendations are helpful.
How did it go?
How is the turning?
The only thing I'm worried about pulling a Uhaul, is the recommended speed 55Mph?? So you basically will be driving 20 to 25MPH slower than the rest of the traffic, that's kinda dangerous
I know it says that, but generally, I stay in the right lane and go the speed limit
My friend do you reccomend auto transport rather than a tow dolly?
@Nihar-po5ml: Depends on the vehicle...a tow dolly can't be used with all vehicles....my personal preference is the auto transport brother
I’m feeling apprehensive about the amount of gas I’m going to have to put in this
@isaiahsanders9356: my pockets felt the same way lol
Shout out to the Chevy Impala!
Did you have to go through tolls? If so, how did you pay the toll for the Uhaul?
Northern Gardening: I went through toll by plate and was billed after dropping off the truck and trailer.
Great question i wanted ti know this too im driving in a couple of weeks from nc to boston
Did uhaul help you load and secure the car?
@johnbones6067: I did not have the car on-site when I picked up the trailer, but I would like to believe that if you did, they would help you load it and secure it at pickup and help you unload it at drop. off..
@@sergeantthomas3295 What I'm thinking of doing, because of my apprehension , is pick up the truck, bring it back to my place, go back to uhaul, link up the trailer with the car on, and then start the the hauling.
how do you take the tire straps off if it's tighten?
Try opening the ratcheting mechanism all the way by squeeing the bar in the middle of it. (This should allow you to disengage the teeth within the handle) then pull the handle all the way down to the open position, then give the strap a few tugs upward....I hope this helps!
@@sergeantthomas3295 I think I can imagine that, thanks my man! I saved your video to my auto transport playlist too. Because yours was the best info I could find.
I'm using a tow dolly? Does your tips include this equipment also
I have never used a tow dolly but I'm sure most rips will still apply....hope the trip went or will go well for you.....let me know how it goes!
I'm afraid to do this. I'm 60 years old and I have to make a longish trip, but I can't drive a truck and my car at the same time unless I tow my car. I couldn't make the trip in one day. How do you manage stopping to rest/sleep? I'm traveling with a cat and a kid as well!
How did your trip go?!
Excellent video 👍
Can I get an advice? I'm doing the same thing, same truck and trailer with my car but I'm driving from Southeastern NY to College Station in Texas in January... You think it's possible? Safe? Tips or advice you could give me there?
@George J Marrero: Relax and take your time, even if that means driving a little slower than traffic sometimes, be aware of what other drivers near you are doing so you have time to react and always give yourself extra space to break.....safe travels 🙏🏾
@@sergeantthomas3295 thanks a lot man I really appreciate 💪🔥
@@georgejmarrero1016 💪🏾No problem!
Dity move?
@Mika-kv7gz: no...I just bought the car and moving a few things into storage for my mom at the same time
I usually drive faster on the highway.
How much was it?
It depends on where and how long you are keeping it
P.S. turn wide.
“You gotta use the signal now”……
Too bad that part is speaking Klingon language for many drivers.
Q'pla!
I live in fort Lauderdale Florida I'm about to rent the same truck and same trailer to go up to Hartwell Georgia and pick up a 78 Cutlass I have never done it before so I'm kind of scared but I want this car so bad I'm willing to try it how bad is the truck towing a car on gas
@coreygut5216: Don't floor it take your time and just cruise and it won't be too bad at all.
great video!
Thank you!
How much it costed you
