~~~NOTES~~~
~DO NOT TOW EVEN A MANUAL TRANS RWD WITHOUT DISCONNECTING THE DRIVESHAFT. After making this video, I did some more research and many manual transmissions need input shaft to be spinning for proper lubrication. I was under the assumption that since a manual transmission generally does not have an oil pump mounted on the input shaft, that it would be okay to be towed in neutral with the rear wheels on the ground. NOT THE CASE and certainly not worth taking a risk.
~I did not talk much about the chains that come originally equipped with this dolly. After securing your car down with straps, you need to secure the chains around the front axle or frame. They serve as a safety in case one of the straps were to break.
Great video, first rate , no nonsense, straight to the point and without annoying background music.
Thanks, and I appreciate the feedback
I was just about to tow a truck 200 miles with the straps jacked. I know this just made my life better, at least in the short term. Thank you!
great video , i have looked at a bunch of videos because I am going to be towing a 71 firebird to a friends and he wants me to back it up in an alley into his garage and i thought that was a terrible idea but no video before yours covered backing them up , and a firebird is also a little wide for the tow dolly , so no backing up for me, and you saved me from damaging the tow dolly and the car , thank you
Just towed a Ford E250, backwards... sway sucked but managed 55 the whole 90 mile trip. Wish I watched this excellent video first! Now I know what to do next time! Nice job on the vid!
Man, i bet that sucked.
Good information. I once towed a car with a manual transmission on a dolly. I left it in neutral, but my wife went behind me to double check everything and she put it in gear. The engine blew a few miles down the road. Dropping the drive line would have saved that car.
80thD Instructions - Like it, I was the Chief Instructor/Writer at the RTSM Gap years ago. Excellent video, info NOT offered by the seller. Thanks.
Thank you my brother. I really truly appreciate this no nonsense straight forward video. It’s loaded with good important Information.
Now I can tow my cobra didn’t know all you had to do for manual cars was pop it in neutral great advice too ! Excellent video !
Excellent video, and excellent job explaining and demonstrating it. Right to the point. This is one of best instructional videos I've seen.
I don't know how anyone can give this a thumbs down, I found it very Informative
People always find something to complain about.
Vivo en méxico y soy novato en el uso del dolly, gracias por compartir tu conocimiento.
Excellent video and demonstrating the dues and don’ts. I tell a lot of trailers, but I’ve never had a tow dolly before for our motorhome and I was looking for a video just to show me anything that I might not know. You went through a lot of good stuff that’s good points. I agree with the person that mentioned I don’t know how anybody can get this video thumbs down because it’s a great video.
Appreciate you leaving the video up.
Gave me some things to look for.
I got a tow dolly for my camper and now I know I can just sell it. There’s no way I’d be comfortable doing all this as a mom - I can do lots of stuff but for sure this isn’t going to be one of them. Thank you for going through such details with clarity. It probably saved somebody’s life.
I’m a 61 year old woman and I can use the car dolly no problem. My husband is NO HELP when it comes to guiding me on or off the dolly due to some brain damage from a stroke so I have to get out and eyeball it myself. My car is a front wheel drive Prius and I tow it behind my RV. It has a low profile so I need to use blocks of wood as he describes. The hardest thing for me is loosening the ratchet.
@@antoinettedepasquale5336 I should have come
Back here and said I figured it out- because I did. Big hep and confidence builder💜
VEEERY helpful video. You hit on so many points other youtubers miss.
Even after using these tow dollies over a few decades, I learned several things from watching this video. Thanks Chris and Jen👍 (I’m assuming Jen did all the camera work 😄)
NoNonsenseKnowHow hi
What does this dolly cost?
@NoNonsenseKnowHow : Great video 👍. Very detailed. Very in depth.
I swear I learn more from RUclips everyday 👍👍👏👏 I've always wanted to see these loaded
Great video. Was looking for information As i nearly lost my load recently, most certainly learnt alot from your video. 1st point being i didnt lock the steering wheel with slider, 2nd point leaving slack before ratcheting down the straps to spool the straps up more. Basic mistakes but sometimes learn the hard way. Thanks from the UK
You are one of the best instructors I've come about thumps up men!
This example was explained very well and I can apply these techniques and safety cautions for my towing with my class c.
Thank you. ☆
Glad to hear you found the video helpful. And no problem
Thanks for teaching an old dog new tricks, thumbs up!
No problem William! Glad to help out and thank you!
Thank you for awesome video. I have same model of dolly for my RV and use some 2x6's to load my car with a low front bumper.
Your safety tips should be made into a check list done before towing.
I agree...this was the best video out there. answered a lot of my questions. I'm going to look at a 2014 tow master tomorrow to buy. I was going to rent a uhaul one but I can't be sure they will have one available when i need it.
thanks brotha, i just got hte same dolly and i had no idea about how u can't back them up.... thanks for the info!!!!!!!!!! and on how to strap it down! I came to youtube to figure out the tire bonnets!
Excellent video, I recommend it to all my customers who buy a mastertow at our dealership.
Just picked mine up last week, and yes....backing up was a disaster. Thanks for the tips.
Watched several videos. The best one, covering details.
Awesome to hear the positive feedback. Thanks man!
Just got a tow dolly and wanted to double check myself.......
That 5.9 Cummins is music to my ears
Why cross the chains ?
Very informative and useful video.I recently had to use a tow dolly like this to tow a 1998 GMC 1500 extended cab truck home.I had to use a 1991 Chevrolet S-10 to do this and it didn't have a receiver hitch.If this wasn't bad enough,I also had to load the GMC truck onto the tow dolly backwards because there wasn't a ring gear and pinion in the rear differential.It did fine until I turned into my driveway off of the main highway and then it almost came off! Finally got it back on and home.
Haha, sounds like a pretty sketchy ride! I've definitely had my fair share of experiences like that. Thanks for sharing! The first car I ever put on here was an old beat-up Porsche that I got for 300 bucks. I put it on backwards and didn't lock the steering. When I made a turn out onto the road, the front end of the car started riding in the opposite lane. LOL
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Wow!The steering column on that GMC 1500 didn't lock anymore,so I had to ratchet strap it straight.When I made the left hand turn into my driveway,the right wheel of the dolly went under the frame of the truck near the cab.
Sunday, I had to haul an automatic 325ci with a rear-air-bagged Grand Cherokee. 400 miles SoCal to NorCal. I've towed professionally for the last 15 years, repo, AAA, every crazy/illegal/insanely unsafe situation possible. This tow was the sketchiest haul I've ever done! It was wagging me hard. At 45 MPH it was trying to kill me. I had to set it at 40 MPH and cruise it white-knuckle the whole way. At that speed it was 12.5 miserable hours instead of the normal 5ish hours.
Never again.
I don't generally comment on things like this, but that was a great video, really informative
Comments like yours go a long way in keeping me motivated. THANK YOU!
I'm about to make a 7h trip. This video is really helpful, thanks.
No problem and glad to hear that. Safe travels
I already knew what I was doing (being a tow truck operator for years) but I loved the way u explained everything great video! And your right about that thing jackknifing crazy lol I hate that shit
I can back a 53' trailer just about anywhere you can drag a rope, but backing up a tow dolly eats my lunch. The deck on a UHaul dolly is articulating... the trailer goes one direction, but the rear wheels of the towed vehicle can go in another. It's like trying to backup doubles! Next time I'm opting for an auto transport.
Jack Reacher yeah man I hear you.... I had to pick up a dead car in a tight tight driveway and it was easier to take the damn thing off and just manually line the shit up and then back the pickup truck back
Dude you’re high speed!!! My straps kept coming off so I’m gonna try looping the strap through the ring twice and hopefully that will make a difference thanks
Yeah sometimes I go a little too fast that's for sure. Make sure you have at least three or more Revolutions of nylon webbing on the ratchets. What part of it is coming loose?
NoNonsenseKnowHow hey thanks for the reply! I think my Ford Explorers front tires has not been snug up against the front bumpstop of the dolly so the vehicle has too much play and is moving around and making the straps come loose every time! I tried doing the double loop through the metal ring and that seemed to help so now I think I need to perhaps make some custom pieces of 2X4 that I can place behind each tire to reduce the vehicle movement? Or try my other set of straps made by starrr products? Thanks
Amazing video my man. Exactoy in the name. NO NONSENSE
Thanks buddy.
Great video, we just got a dolly and now we know how to use it! I was wondering why it was so hard to reverse with a dually and a Jeep on the dolly I was trying and trying again until I was able to reverse with the Jeep in a super tight spot and then completely in a tempo (A car tempo for winter) it was so unbelievably hard but now I know not to do it again haha thanks!
Great video you covered very important details others have left out. Thanks for the lesson. New subscriber...
What an awesome guy. Thanks for sharing the knowledge some of us really appreciate it.
Dennis Hunt awesome man! Thanks for checking it out and verifying that my instructions are accurate. I've been using and renting dollies for years. So I've seen a lot of what can go wrong.
Just like your other comments, very good explanation .
thanks that video sure did help. i have a tow dolly like this one. i rip off the under neath pulling up on it. i did not realize it would be to low. thanks for the tip on putting down under the ramp.
No problem, happy to hear it helped out. Thanks
This video and towing was outstanding.
Very thorough and helpful!! Thanks
Thanks for the feedback Jerrie
Thank you for all the details
great step by step tutorial!!! your a natural!!!
Thanks fabulous
Great Video...I learned a lot! THANKS!
Good info, it's important to lock the steering wheel as the dolly is designed with the slider to limit the amount of steering angle so that no damage occurs to the vehicle being towed. For dollies without a slider, you must unlock the steering. I think I rather the slider tho because once I was forced to tow a 5,500 pound truck backwards to the recycling center with a 5,000 pound truck. I got up to 50 mph and learned quickly about death wobble. Backed down to 20-30 mph MAX and I was ok. So if your forced to tow backwards, I'd say you definitely need the slider, but I still wouldn't recommend it like you said.
Very helpful video, thanks for your effort. Kazakhstan 🇰🇿
Great video, very informative and helpful
Thanks. Have you found it useful
Thanks so much I just traded a 4x4 for one of these.
nice tip on releasing ratchet if no room cause of bumper, thanks for video
No problem man. And yeah I figured that out one day when I was in a jam! Definitely comes in handy to know that about the ratchets
Excellent walk through.
No problem!
Very informative video 👍🏻
Thank you , very helpful video 😊
Excellent instructions
Very helpful man thank you. And nice second gen by the way.
Great to hear that It was helpful. And thanks
Excellent. Very helpful.
I know an old timer that owned a repair garage and wrecker service. He towed rear wheel drive cars backward all the time, for decades. This was before cars had lock steering. He would loop a piece of rope on the steering wheel pull it tight and close the car door on it. Then knot the rope so it couldn't pull back through. They would pull as straight as long as the steering wheel was straight with no wagging. Thanks for all the great tips on using this dolly.
Great information, thank you.
Thanks for the good tutorial.
Matt Trotta thanks for putting it to use my man!
Awesome tips!
Great video. My husband and I have one of these we pulled behind our RV. He would always pull the car up and I’d strap it down while he tied down the steering wheel. I lost my husband this April and realized I didn’t remember everything he did inside the vehicle while I strapped the tires. I couldn’t remember if he left it in neutral (automatic transmission). I figured you would have to, but honestly wasn’t sure.
Great video 👍
Thanks for the advice 👍
Excellent video 👍🏽
Thanks dude!
My uncle recommended I get one to have just in case and I'm like I don't even know how to use one hahaha So thanks for tutorial
Yeah cheers for this video buddy
great content
Good video.
Quick question!
I noticed as you backed up sideways the car move a little out of the trailer.
And it was only a light move. Are the doors or panel liable to get damage on a sharp turn.
I have a 23ft tioga rv , and im trying to trailer my 75 k5 blazer 250 miles round trip 500 miles total to Pismo Beach Ca.
Would it be a problem or can if transport the weight capacity with out issues. ?
