  • How I built a Tow Dolly from scraps around the house (ok, I bought a new axle)
    With all the kids and their cars we seem to always need a tow dolly. I knew we going to need one to haul the Honda Accords around when we finally found a donor car for parts so we decided to build a tow dolly. I think we have about $250 in cost since we already had all the metal we only had to purchase the axle, hubs, lights, and coupler... we even had extra 14" wheels and tires as spares for the other trailers. We will remove them and store in the garage like we always do when not using the dolly.
    My gear:
    I use the Audio Technica AT2020 XLR because I wanted to be able to record music occasionally. If you do not need that then you could just go straight for the USB version and wouldn’t need the phantom power or extra cables. The external recorder is a must when using a cell phone and will help with audio sync when editing.
    Zoom H1: amzn.to/29K9pJR
    Audio-Technica AT2020: amzn.to/29TnIdv
    Phantom power: amzn.to/29LF3CV
    XLR to USB cable: amzn.to/29YBoUW
    XLR Microphone cable: amzn.to/29YCe4g
    Don’t forget to subscribe, like, leave lots of feedback, advice, suggestions, etc. but most importantly get inspired to get out of your routine! Stop tapping the screen on your phone all day and get out there and learn something new by doing!

    Crocs, shorts, t-shirt....brave man lol... tip though, don't ground through moving parts as you did when you grounded through the ball release or you run the risk of having it weld itself due to the resistance of there being a weak continuous ground.

    Note to anyone looking to build a car dolly: Car dollies need to have a pivoting cradle to work properly. If they don't pivot, they drag their tires sideways around corners and will eventually break the tongue, right where the two truss tubes are welded to the tongue. Having the cars steering wheel unlocked does not help. DG

      Not true, just need to know how most dollies are fixed

    • @deegee8032
      @deegee8032 2 года назад +3

      @@xycho351 All that means is most don't understand the physics involved. The pivot points in the steering do not allow for a full relief of the pressure that is generated during a turn even though the steering wheel turns some. The outside wheel of the car is pulled forward and the inside wheel is pushed back . Try this the next time you have your car on the dolly. With the trailer straight behind, measure the distance from the front tread of the tires to a reference point on the trailer. Then, make a tight turn and stop when the dolly/car is at its maximum deflection. Then, remeasure the two measurements. Cars are not manufactured to tolerate a lot of this. The only way to relieve this stress is to have a pivot that is in the center of the dolly. DG

      Also, you need to ask yourself, why does Uhaul only rent pivoting dollies.

    • @darkfireBikes
      @darkfireBikes 2 года назад

      That is partially true. You can have a fixed deck as long as you leave your steering wheel unlocked and car in neutral. The reason U-Haul only rents pivoting is simply cause it's easier to use. Don't have to leave the key in the ignition and put it in park if it's a fwd

    • @__WJK__
      @__WJK__ 3 года назад +1

      @@label1877 - To safety check or not safety check... this is the question. Building a homemade car dolly is all fine and great until the dolly comes apart on the highway and injures/kills someone due to someone building one that has absolutely no business/skill building a proper and safe dolly.

    • @label1877
      @label1877 3 года назад +6

      WJK One could make that argument on absolutely anything. A boat trailer, a tire carrier, an outside lighting fixture. So you do not trust your fellow citizens to know their ass from a hole in the ground. Nobody but licensed, insured, bonded men are “allowed “ to do anything? That is a ...big brother knows best Philosophy. It’s a heavy handed way to run a government. In my state, that would not fly. Life has risks, if homemade dollies become a safety issue, we will address it.

    • @__WJK__
      @__WJK__ 3 года назад +2

      @label1877 - No, actually the argument can't be made for everything... you can't cherry-pick or use half logic where full logic is required. (ie) Someone builds a homemade lighting fixture and it fails and falls off their barn wall and whacks them on their head, that's completely isolated to them, as it only affects (hopefully) just them. Send a homemade whatever rolling up and down public roads (vs rolling up and down someone's personal/private road) and the item should need AND be allowed to receive a simple and easy inspection and approval. See... I'm actually 100% for homemade items be it private off-road us or public on-road use but there's a right way and a wrong way to go about it. The Gov't/States ultimately work for the people... if there isn't a system in place that allows someone to build (for example) a diy car dolly (and also a way to get it inspected and approved for public road use) then that simply needs to change... easy as that.

      Here is your visualization problem. Do not do this except over the tires... "Strap it down nice and tight!!!!"

    • @BadmunkyWRX
      @BadmunkyWRX 5 лет назад +4

      Your not understanding here not me man.
      When you turn and the car turns on the dolly the wheels on the dolly have NOTHING to do with it.
      If there strapped the car CAN NOT turn on the dolly.
      Here is why. And I will make you a video explanation if you need it as well.
      When the tow vehicle turns such as a 90 degree corner in a city the dolly will angle behind the tow vehicle in order to follow it correct?
      Ok so if it did not do this, and was locked to the tow vehicle with no pivot point (the hitch in this case) it would have no other option than to be dragged sideways right?
      The car on the tow dolly is now the same. The dolly is now the tow vehicle and the car is now the trailer.
      If both front tires are strapped down tight enough to prevent the car from falling off then they will not move front to back on the dolly at all right? Well if they can not move front to back on the dolly at all the car will not turn on the dolly. Why? Because you can turn the tires on the dolly all you want on the dolly and the car will stay in a straight line on the dolly. In order for the rear of the car to not be in a straight line with the dolly axles it has to be at an angle on the dolly. (This is what the center pivot point allows) Even if you can turn the front wheels of the car in order for the CAR to move to an angle on the dolly so it is not being drug sideways the outside front tire will HAVE to move back on the dolly. If its strapped in place it CAN NOT do this.
      So with the steer tires of the vehicle on the dolly strapped in place the car can NOT pivot on the dolly in any way and thus it WILL be drug sideways exerting a MASSIVE force on the front suspension and steering. This WILL bend things on the towed vehicle. And if towed far enough will ruin the rear tires from be drug sideways. This is actually why your strap did not stay tight on your test run.
      This might work for a very short trip with limited turns but tow this thing threw a large city and spin it around at a gas station trying to get to a pump and the towed cars messed up for sure. If you need a video to demonstrate this I would be happy to make you one. I have towed a trailer for living almost all my adult life. I have built trailers, and dolly's in the past. And am planning a trailer build right now.
      I went to school for automotive engineering as well. I am not just some keyboard know it all. In fact I am sure there are things I could learn from you!
      I promise you your dolly will damage anything you tow with it unless you don't turn! This is not an argument it is a statement of fact.
      Let me know if you want that video made for you demonstrating why your dolly with damage the towed vehicle.

    Trailer pivot point is in middle of axle. Car wheel pivot point is thru centre line of ball joints ,one on each side. Would ask one of you geniuses to explain how a 3 axle trailer would ever work? Yet they are sold every day also how many of you know the difference between a spread axle trailer and a closed axle trailer ? .. granted a spread axle can dump the air on a tight turn .. if you have air suspension.. so those types of axle configurations run thousands of miles daily.. on heavy trucks lots of weight .. and you people think that a car dollie with no turntable but does allow for som turning with steering ...and drawing around a lill pos car that weigh maybe 3 thousand lbs is out of the question ? Also how much use will it have ?
