    As a 33 year diesel mechanic I learned a long time ago a thing called duty cycle. The ability of the engine to sustain 90% or higher horsepower for an extended period of time. A turbo’d 4 banger is not going to be able to sustain that especially towing up long grades, towing a weight of say 80% + of its tow capacity. Sure the turbo 4 cylinder has more HP but at what cost? Dip into that HP too much and you’ll be replacing turbo or engine a lot sooner. We’re downsizing in don’t need a 1 ton diesel truck anymore. However I need something my wife could drive and not be intimidated. Like a 4x4 Limited. We’re planning on moving to the Northwest next year so 4x4 is definitely desirable. Here in Texas I don’t find very many just the 2wd. Then she prefers a “sparkling white” as she puts it, with tan interior. Sigh. Now she wants to wait till 2025 to purchase something, most likely it will be used as people are scarfing up the last V-6’s.

    The 2010-24 4Runners are a modern classic. The frame, the 1GR-FE V6 engine and 5-speed auto transmission actually debuted on the 4th generation 4Runner back in 2003, with minimal changes afterwards. Much of the research and development being done in the late 90s and early 2000s.
    So in short, the outgoing 4Runner comes from a bygone era when Toyota was at their peak in terms of quality and reliability.

  • @BradleyBishop
    @BradleyBishop Месяц назад +2

    I'll say it since no one else is addressing it. Turbo: the problem I see with turbo is that manufacturers are putting in under-sized engines for EPA/CAFE compliance. If you let it coast and never engage the turbo then your EPA numbers look great. It's now how most people drive. The way most people drive the turbo will be in use a large percent of the time (I'd argue most of the time). Meaning, now that 4cyl engine is being hit rather hard, most of the time, because it is otherwise underpowered and turbo is the only way to get it to be consumer-acceptable.
    Turbo in a race car? Ok. Turbo in a pickup truck for when it needs an extra boost? OK. Turbo to assist an undersized engine just sounds like it's asking for trouble to me.

      Has Toyota ever dropped the ball with the quality of their vehicles that people aren’t buying them anymore? I’m confident Toyota engineers took everything into account to produce a good replacement for the former 4Runner. Unless you know something from the manufacturer we don’t, I’d say give them some time to prove themselves. Besides, first generation vehicles normally come with bugs so let’s be patient and “don’t burn them bridges just yet” 🤣

    • @DavidWX877

    • @dbastardo1
      @dbastardo1 Месяц назад +2

      @@DavidWX877 but aren’t they standing behind their product and replacing engines on all the vehicles involved? It only happened to one specific model engine, not their entire fleet of vehicles. There are some that don’t even have an issue and they’re still replacing it. I remember Porsche went through something similar with crankshaft bearings in a particular engine back in the day. Issues were corrected as well. Now I remember Corollas from the 2000s also had issues with oil leaks in their engines past the 100k miles due to issues with piston rings. None of the less, Corollas are considered today one of their best built vehicles right next to the Camry. That doesn’t sound like dropping the ball to me. Not everything is perfect. Perhaps today’s vehicles are not being built like the old days, built to last. Just saying

    Without a doubt the 2024 is the last year of the awesome reliable 4R. The new 2025 turbo or turbo/hybrid (no frame bump stops) is extremely more complex and has 3-4 times as many fail points. Don't buy a turbo, hybrid, electric or CVT, you'll be much happier and wealthier. Turbos do one thing awesome, they wear the motor out much faster. Never mind the turbo also wont last long either. Good luck.

      To bad everyone does not know this they like to point to diesel engines with turbos and how long they last but they seem to forget gas and diesel engines are not the same. Not only that a turbo puts stress on the little engine causing it to wear out faster and the whole idea of them coming with a battery pack that needs to be replaced at some point that will cost thousands of dollars to replace is a huge added cost with very little benefit.

They say it’s the tires and even after road force balancing them the truck still shakes. Then the dealership said “Well the tire company allows a certain tolerance”. Are you kidding! 4 FJ cruisers owned 2007, 2010, 2012, 2014, hated that 19 gal tank. Same truck under the skin as 4R. Started out looking at the Crown SUV intro'ed this year. Head slap time: the Crown limited version is almost same price as a limited 4R, but a new unibody failure with mucho plastic and the thinnnest metal Toyota could press, and a 4 banger. Wow i could have a body on frame v6 luxo 4R limited for same money!. So i did a 500 mile search and found the one i loved, a dock strike was keeping it on the boat until this past wednesday. now just waiting to go to dealer and pick it up. Will join its stablemate the 2021 Tundra limited. The last good trucks Toyota ever built and will ever build, now that Toyota is a hand maid to Corporate Average Fuel Economy. i DO like my 38 gal Tundra tank for my all day drives, ha ha.

    I love my 2023 4Runner. If I had to replace it - say due to an accident, I'd get a Land Cruiser. I don't like the looks of the 6th gen. I'm not too worried about turbochargers - Toyota has been putting them in their diesel engines for a very long time (too bad none in the US, though).

      Yeah diesel and turbos are quite different than regular gas and turbo. Former VW owner here and id suggest you look into the differences.

      @@Anomize23 I wouldn't necessarily compare VW's engineering or manufacturing abilities to Toyota's - regardless of the fuel the engine was designed to burn. I had a TDI Jetta and I traded it in for my first Tacoma 15 years ago. It was a decent car, but the quality just wasn't the greatest.

    A 2024 TRD Pro 4runner is cheaper than a 2025 SR5 4runner…… I got a 24 TRD ORP for 46k…. When the new generation are in the shop getting new turbos or new battery banks replaced. Or new engines because of all that torque in a small engine = accelerated wear and tear…. I will still be driving my dinosaur! ( btw….I hope I am wrong, but you know I am not)

    You basically need to ask yourself if you're ok spending $50k+ for the privilege of being a beta tester. If you are, then congrats you're going to get to do just that. If not, just wait and see how this new drive train actually performs and lasts. It's conventional wisdom in tech that you never bet on generation one of anything. You always wait till gen 2 or even gen 3 if you can. By then any bugs are worked out and you have better known quantity to judge. If you don't need the newest shiny, let those who do take the hit.

    Really Jeff ???? You are doing a 'Comparison" using an SR5 (lowest trim) to a Limited ?!?!?! OMG. How much does Toyota pay you for these maligned 'reviews"? Maybe do a 'review' on how exactly alike the new Tacoma and the new 4Runner are, that would be nice. Maybe do a 'review' on sales figures for the new and former generations?? Because really, its customer demand that matters most and there isn't anyone 'demanding' these new ones. Customers were demanding the last generation though.

    5th Gen 4Runner has the 5 speed auto transmission and the 4.0 V6 engine are bulletproof.
    The 6th generation can never match the reliability of naturally aspirated engine from 5th generation 4Runner.

    Despite thirsty fuel economy, reliability, durability, the interior is bulky old school feel, screw the 25 model year coming, I haven’t seen a single new one on dealerships, I’m sure Toyota is delaying it since the Tacoma truck is not selling and is wayyyyyy overpriced, I found a 2024 for 40 grand I feel when they finally get the 25 year on the lots imma negotiate 2024 one down to 30 grand then shoot my trade and down payment
