Live tomorrow, 8/8/21 10am pst. Sorry for the wait, I just really like interacting with all of you guys during a premiere, especially if I think the video is a good one, and I think this is a good one!! See you guys tomorrow morning!!
Lol, thought I somehow missed my Saturday when I saw you posted!!! Good news, I have my Saturday back. Bad news I have to wait for the video. Whelp, bottoms up!!
Safety tip: If you are running solo, make it a habit to tether yourself to the boat. regardless if you are wearing a life jacket or how well you can swim. The wind and currents can move your boat away from you faster than you can swim.
Made me laugh after Matt’s said. “If I get a hook up I’m not going to take the rod out of the holder, I’m just going to start reeling. I’ve lost too many fish because I took the rod out of the holder before reeling.” First thing he does when he gets bit is grab the rod and pull it out of the holder before reeling! Excitement and adrenaline! 😂🤣😂
Bearings wear the races, when you place a new bearing on the old race that already has a wear groove in it, it will cause premature wear on the new bearing. It is always best practice to replace the bearings and races as a set.
My experience on the mooch, minimal weight (1/2 oz or less, just enough to sink the chovie), 8-9 foot leader fed through the bait mouth to tail, rubber band the mouth closed on the 4-O marbles circle hook, put a half hitch around the tail with the leader, let the bait sink 25-35 feet, leave the reel in free spool with the clicker on, when the clicker goes off LEAVE THE ROD ALONE! After the salmon has had a chance to eat the bait (longer than you are comfortable with) simply put the reel in gear (DO NOT STRIKE) and let the circle hook lodge in the corner of the salmons mouth as it is swimming away from you. The circle hook will actually hold the salmon better than your trolling rings! Good luck Chuck
Seen/replaced a hand full of trailer axles because of improperly torqued axle nuts. When you replace the bearings you should initially torque the axle nut to 50-70 lbs to properly seat the bearings. Then back off the nut till the hub can spin somewhat freely. Or if you want to be safe I think final torque on the nut was 15-25 ftlbs.
If you accidentally pull wires into trailer without attaching them to the old ones, try using a shop vac. Use a fishing line or other strong but light cordage to suck through first. Tie new wire to it and pull new wire through using vacuumed cordage Tape off leaks to increase vacuum pressure if needed. Works with piping and pvc. Electrician's trick. Lube heavy cable when pulling through. Hope this helps with future projects. PS love your show 👍
You didn't switch the bearing race over as well. I would definitely replace the whole thing again. Just get the inner and outer bearing assembly's and seal from any parts store.
The first captain speaking on the radio is Dennis Baxter of the New Captain Pete! Him and his son Braden run some great charters out of Half Moon Bay! 10/10
Wow, if I had a nickel for every time I watched a video about pumping grease into bearings today , I'd have two nickels - which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
Good job taking care of your own stuff, because when things go wrong, you know what to do. And it's N E V E R at a convenient time. God Bess, and safe travels! Thanks for sharing your videos.
There’s a few ways to mooch, Personally I like to drift mooch over motor mooching. What I do is I’ll take a 8ft piece 25-30 lb mono then I’ll tie a double egg loop or snell knot with 2-3 ot hooks (depending on coho or chinook). then I’ll tie my leader directly to a 4-6 oz banana weight depending on the tide and depth I’m fishing in. When I’m ready to fish I’ll run upswell then kill the motor and very slowly drop my herring all the way to the bottom and even slower I’ll reel it all the way to the surface then repeat. If you feel the herring get heavier I like to reel fast and set the hook, or if you feel it disappear then reel fast and set the hook.
Nice going! Due to health issues, I've been sidelined from fishing. I was on the edge of my seat watching you bring this one in! In the early 90's I went out of Sausalito on the Flying Fish. Their mooching rig was the main line through a slider snap swivel. They had little red ones. The main line was then attached to a ball sinker (1 to 2 oz)? Thread a 5" leader with the same size hook you usually use through an anchovy then attach the leader to the swivel via any loop knot. Find a bait ball, drop it over the side, and good luck. With mooching they kind of play with it at first. Wait until your rod really dips over, then go for it. With this rig I caught a 7 lb right outside the bay, then a 15 lb right underneath the Golden Gait. One of my best trips ever!
Same here about the health issues brother. I've been off of work and on bed rest for over a month now but getting out and camping or fishing anything really was out a little while ago. I like the small creek videos too. If you've ever seen 618 Fishing he's from around my area (618 is the area code) and sometimes I see places I've been so it makes even better. Wish I could. Hope you feel good today. All the best to you your friends and family!
Epic video Matts. You are truly a blessed man. You showed a lot of patience in landing that salmon Matts, congratulations on your new PB salmon. Stay safe out there. Aloha from Kansas
I've always found mooching to be good when there's a big concentration of fish in an area, but generally trolling is more productive otherwise because you can cover more ground. Also when I do mooch, I prefer threading the line through the anchovy and leaving the circle hook snug in the mouth. Hope this helps good luck :D
I almost had a heart attack with 50 other subscribers! Lol. Almost catch! We need some dramatic music to go with this catch! That catch pretty much defined Everything about Fisherman’s Life. Boredom, hope, waiting, thinking, relaxing, adrenaline flowing, bringing in the PB, and finally Sigh~
Here in the UK we call it drifting best for us is to drift rough ground over with the current, drift over your chosen spot and then go back and start again, works well 😀
FYI you can use two barbless circles when mooching for salmon between Horse Mountain and Point Conception. And you really only need to use circles when drifting using "bait", which while undefined in the regs may not include your artificial jig.
Dude... bearing race needed to be replaced, and probably the seals as well. You'll save yourself a lot of hassle down the road if you replace everything. I'm fixing up a boat myself- new trailer wires & lights, new wheel bearings/races/seals, new tires, cleaned carb, etc. I also got an electrician's fish tape (stiff steel feeder wire) for feeding the wires through the trailer. It's a labor of love- good luck!
CONGRATS!!! What an awesome fish. I have only ever caught one Chinook in the salt and it was amazing. I fish Lake Ontario all the time for Salmon and got my first Tyee this year and bet I looked just like you did in this vid. Love the real excitement.
Beautiful king buddy! You should start taking a scale out there with you to get a weight. Just caught my first keeper king salmon last month and it was a 20lber! Such an awesome feeling! I couldn’t imagine doing it without the help of my buddy netting her though. Doing it solo must be a total rush after getting it in the net.
Yo Matts! Great video. Congrats on the PB. Just wanted to say thanks for putting mooching on this video. You took my suggestion and opened up alot of conversation about the subject. I’m learning as well. Alot of my buddies mooch and swear by it. They use the banana weight and a 6ft leader with a circle hook threaded in anchovy. You will get one eventually. I never been successful mooching either. In time well get it! Thanks again!
Folbe quick draw rod holders or Down East rod holders work GREAT for quick rod access. Besides clipping in the motor kill switch, another good habit is to use rod holders, never let the pole hit the deck, trips happen and you get broken bones and rods.
When mooching, you can leave it in the rod holder but you get more bites if you let it down slowly and back up slowly. Mooching is good for when the fish are deep because the 40oz cannon balls can’t get more than 80-100ft because the line scopes back. Think of mooching as vertically trolling the bait, the vertical movement gives the bait better action. So you can let it down and bring it up at a nice “walking speed” pace

i love watching Matt so hyped over a fish, every episode i see him get this excited it's worth every moment.
I actually applauded when he netted the fish. this guys bring out the child inside me haha. keep up the super good work man.

also there should be a big washer between the nut and the bearing
Any time you replace the bearing, you should replace the race too. Take it from a master automotive tech here.
Definitely sneaking off @ 1pm to go “use the restroom” while getting in that overtime in tomorrow

Yeah bro! Good job getting that hog in solo. Solo net jobs on BIG fish are about the most anxiety provoking, but satisfactory experiences.
