the reason BTS isn’t nominated is because they’re not popular on US charts. they undeniably have a very large fanbase but all the grammys care about is charts. taylor swept the ama’s because it’s a fan voted award and she has a huge fanbase but she hasn’t been doing that well on the charts which is why a lot of ppl have been confused as to how she won every category she was nominated for at the ama’s.
Ok here’s my theory: celebrities that we grew up watching at award shows like Katy Perry, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, etc. are a lot older now and less enthusiastic about stuff like the AMAs because they’re so far into their career. Most of them don’t even attend anymore. I think we’re in this weird stage where the old generation of celebrities are leaving, but the new ones haven’t really arrived yet, and award shows are just kinda bland because nobody AT the awards even care.

30's is not old though. Stars from the 70's, 80's, and 90's would be at the top of their careers in their 30's and beyond. There just isn't so much longevity anymore for some reason. Perhaps the Internet age makes everything so oversaturated that everyone gets over individual stars much faster, including the stars themselves. It's not as sustainable when everything is at your fingertips any time via the Internet. Just a theory. Could be something else.

It used to be music videos + MTV that helped bring singles to the forefront. After "Panda" by Desiigner, streaming in the audio-only version started to take over and it shifted the main demographic to urban men and African-Americans who use streaming services the most often. Sia's "Cheap Thrills" was the last authentic music video-era hit.

honestly the reason why performances suck now is because these "artist" don't know how to perform lol. Like no one dances anymore, everyone just walks around on stage. This is why I've gravitated towards kpop (keep your racist comments to yourself I don't wanna hear it) they give you a performance; by the time they finish performing they're drenched in sweat. That's how you know they giving it there all, these new artist are so boring and have no stage presence or charisma.

The only “new(er)” artist I’d consider a pop star is Ariana Grande. She can actually sing and has bomb videos.
Noble Obodum when I think of old pop stars I think of older artists who have been around longer and have more awards/accolades ie Bey, Rih, Taylor, Katy, Gaga
Grande has been in the industry for over a decade and has had music success since her 2013 album however she really just reached this superstar status in the past 2 years or so.

To me, Ariana represents the modern version of an archetypal pop star. My favorite thing about pop is that it takes music and marries it with visual branding. She has a signature look (ponytail, liner, big sweatshirts with thigh high boots), a signature music style, videos that I can see in my head vividly (Love Me Harder, Dangerous Woman, Break Free, Problem, Focus). I think that's a big reason I love her, and I'm starting to obsess over Doja Cat. Pop's big appeal is the visual impact, and I really hope we start getting more of this back.

here's my theory on why award shows are so bad now: every good performance that makes waves in pop culture has a little thing called shock value. when a artist uses shock value in their performance people will more likely remember it and talk about it. britney with the snake, gaga bleeding out of her chest and hanging from the stage, beyonce announcing her pregnancy, and miley twerking. they all huge shock value and had people talking about the performance for years and years. no one is doing anything shocking anymore it's all the same thing over and over again just on different award shows. no one is being creative on stage anymore and that's why we've seen such a huge decline in ratings and quality of award shows. if artist don't start switching things up and adding that element of surprise to their performances you'll just see the same boring award shows over and over again. and that's the tea

Taylor’s albums in the past couple years are nowhere as successful as her eponymous album 1989 which was released in 2014. Whereas Rihanna’s most acclaimed album Anti which was released in 2016 was just as culturally significant. I hear Rihanna on pop AND urban radio more than Taylor. Rihanna was also on two successful songs in 2017 (Loyalty and Wild Thoughts). Rihanna’s track record, achievements and diverse fanbase make her the artist of the decade for me. I do see why Taylor won though. I honestly still feel like the powers that be didn’t want to award a Black woman as artist of the decade.

As a pop culture enthusiast and nerd myself this entire video is so on point mediocrity has become the norm in the music industry and it’s sad.
I agree with you that there is a sharp decline in quality pop music but I actually think Taylor is the only one holding it because she is the only one bring real lyrics to pop music. Excluding like ME LWYMD and like You need to calm down. The ama’s is fan voted. That’s why Taylor has won so many of them. And she did do a song from Red (I knew you were trouble) she only did 1 and a half songs from Lover it being a snippet of the Man and then closing with Lover. There is a reason award shows are not good. It’s because there is a lack of actual talented people who are FAMOUS. We are allowing social media stars to take over.
There is barely any well-known talented people, and no one is scouting for new talent and that’s because it doesn’t take talent to get big, it takes looks.
I am not kidding. Agents/Managers aren’t looking for someone with gifts anymore, they are looking for attractive people with a big following ratio. That is who they are promoting now, not stars.
So, since there is a lack of famous people who can entertain, that means... there is a lack of actual performances. Hence the reason why we keep seeing these same people(Camilla Cabello) perform over and over again.
Also, now it’s easy for mediocre artist to top charts because there is no competition in being talented. Let’s take Lil Nas(a former twitter troll) for example, his silly song topped the charts for WEEKS. It was so easy for him to get famous off of that. That isn’t to bash Nas himself, I mean rodeo is a bop. But still. Have you seen him perform “Old Town Road”...?
No, even though his song topped charts it is not taken seriously as actual music, and realistically no one wants to pay to watch Nas perform that. His main demographic was kids for that song, and kids do not watch adult award shows.
Award shows are lacking because there is no famous artist to put on the stage that will bring them in proper amounts of views. All the famous people now are just tik tokers and RUclipsrs. And yeah, you could bring in other talented people, but if they aren’t famous then they can’t bring in revenue.
So, not to be over dramatic, but there is a serious lack of talented people who are simultaneously famous.
I’m not hating on tik tokers and youtubers, etc. They can make their money as they wish, get their coin.
But at the same time I wish we would start putting more emphasis on searching for people who’s gifts deserve to be heard and seen.
Edit: Also, serious artist do NOT want to perform at award shows where a mediocre performer could possibly steal an award from them. Or a place where a annoying ass tik tok star could be sitting next to them. Have you noticed that the actual pop stars no longer perform at these award shows? It’s because they(the award shows) are a JOKE to them now, there is no class associated with them. They will let anyone on that stage, and in that place who will bring in views.

Award shows used to be the only time we would see celebrities. If you missed it, you was missing out. Now we see celebs on all social media platforms, we see updates about their lives every day. We get live updates from award shows the second it happens. Also most young people do not have cable to watch award shows.

She’s paired lyrical content with incredibly catchy beats before, but those lead singles have nothing. They have nothing beyond a catchy beat. That song You Need to Calm Down is absolute garbage. Seriously, if you read the lyrics about half are the same few lines, and a solid 1/3 of the chorus is literally her repeating “Uh-oh.” The rest of the songs are either completely forgettable or sound like a mess of the same song ten times in a row. Maybe you think I’m wrong and that some of the songs were actually sweet and deep, but I’ll tell you now next to none of them are extremely memorable or interesting. Most of these sound like the kind of thing you’d listen to as background music. I don’t hate Taylor or anything. I’m just used to a high standard with her releasing some of the best pop albums of all time. This year, not only did she not deliver, she put out such a remarkably mediocre body of work and didn’t bring anything to the table.
