      Ppl on twitter literally call her a terrorist and that she wanted her fans dead. They also supported rainbow felon because they didn’t want her to go number 1. A majority of people also only called out Ariana and not Justin or Scooter. They were really degrading her and her achievements all bc a pedo criminal was having a temper tantrum for not having his garbage excuse of a song go number 1. I also saw some calling her a murderer for “killing Mac and almost killing Pete”. But totally Lana, Ariana only gets praised!!! Where was this energy when she was on a song with Ariana ??

    • @ThiccCato
      @ThiccCato 4 года назад +28

      I think she was using them as an example to prove her point. I could name a few songs from those artists that have been on the charts and had sexual tones or sexual videos. That doesn't mean they are not talented but they do get praised for these themes.
      However, we all know as Lana fans that the media up until now has dragged her by her head for her mentions of abuse and dark tones in her songs. Remember when she was called out by Lorde (a big player in the alt scene) for 'glamorising abuse'.
      What I think is that she wants the way she and many others feel empowered to be accepted. I know from my own experiences that her songs on those topics definitely helped me through my own trauma. Maybe it's not for everyone but that doesn't mean she should be slammed for speaking out on those topics.
      And it is a well-known fact in the music industry that sex sells. Anything sexual will most likely be on the charts. If that is how people feel empowered that is just fine but the fact still stands that sex will sell. Even bad guy a song from another alt artist (Billie Ellish) had some sexual undertones in the lyrics. And that song hit number one on the charts.
      Did she have to call their names out? No. But if she didn't she would have still been dragged by stan twitter and called bitter and hateful. Maybe if she directed it fully onto the critics who were say those things to her then maybe she would have had less backlash. Or maybe if we took out most of her first paragraph.
      Rather than drag this woman we should instead be celebrating the win we black people got on the charts and us as human beings be a little more tolerant the empowerment of other women and men.

    • @ThiccCato
      @ThiccCato 4 года назад +22

      This also reminds me of how Beyonce got dragged for lemonade. She spoke about her marriage and the some of critics and media came for her. Similar to how the came for Lana.
      The charts and how some songs get up there is weird but there seems to be a big theme of anything sexual being most likely praised and pushed on the charts. It's a problem that should be addressed and the fact that it's rare or weird to see something top the charts without having anything sexual in it quite telling.

      And as someone who likes her music and listens to every album, I remember she did this same thing with Lady Gaga (although not publicized like this). I think she also feels upset with how it’s taken her 3+ years to be nominated for Grammy awards, and on top of that, she didn’t win any. But I think she has to realize that every circumstance is different and take into account, that her career is not over.... she hasn’t changed her style for a long time so why start? Maybe there’s something industry wise happening that we don’t know about (I did hear about the ex-CEO of the Grammy Awards having a vendetta against Lana and Ariana) but I don’t think this is solely a fan base/supporter based issue, especially given with all the evidence Amanda has made. And to think of it, her music is definitely something that ages well and will increase her fame... I don’t think people realize instant gratification does really nothing half of the time especially once it’s all gone.

      Chantel Chukwuezi When did she say that they only get praise? She’s talking about the lyrics that they’re allowed to sing in their songs and the images they portray. She knows that Ariana and other female artists get lots of abuse, but she’s not talking about that here, she’s talking about just the music. Example: They are praised for taking control of the narrative when it come to sex in their music. When Lana writes about real world issues in her music that real women are facing to this day, it was said she was glamorising abuse and hurting women. I guess people have their own take on what her lyrics mean or what she said in this statement, but it’s clear to me exactly what she’s saying. There are people even saying she is being racist, what a stretch the English language has become.

So I just assumed that she was okay with being in the alternative pop genre and mainly that genre doesn’t hit mainstream until a song/album really pops. Honestly, if she is trying to become number one in the billboards then she is just going to make herself crazy. She has a very loyal fanbase and a pretty good standing in the music industry. If she keeps making the music that makes her happy and pay the bills, then that’s all that should matter.

Lana sings about hooking up with old men to make it into music, being with an old man knowing that she's his side chick, how the only thing that makes her feel powerful is being with older powerful men that abuse her, her drug addiction that keeps getting worse, pedophilia, basically sings about Lolita (not always but mostly). She also criticized Beyoncé for a photo shoot she did where she posed provocatively and claimed that she was holding feminism back despite the fact that she also wears revealing clothes (not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it’d be hypocritical for her to shame Beyoncé for it and then turn around and do the same/similar things)

    I really don't want to downplay Lana Del Rey's experiences with abuse, because we all deal with things differently. I think a major factor of this is that Lana Del Rey consistently glamourizes chola/cholo aesthetics and tried to capture the image of coming from a ethically specific cultural experience intrinsically tied to being latinx and poor that is a very negative stereotype for us. She is a rich white woman who changed her name and appearance to appear in her own words "ghetto" in order to profit of of a culturally specific experience. That coupled with the idea that she is downplaying the struggles that all the latinx & black women she mentioned who have experienced financial hardship and abusive situations and overcome it/are in the process of overcoming them. The fact that all the women are all women of color (minus ariana) that she stereotyped as hypersexual despite that they all have vastly different sexual identities & experiences and how that hypothetical sex no longer considers them "soft" or "feminine" therefore not worthy of their success (while i do believe some of the women mentioned are problematic like Camilla and because of that dont deserve their prominence that is a whole other can of worms but is not tied to sexual expression/identity/experiences) because they enjoy their sexual agency (and even then not all of these songs are even about the things she said! Doja's most known song is about a cow. THE ANIMAL.). The idea that she is slutshaming in this manner and ignoring their struggles frustrates me so much! Miss Elizabeth Grant is writing dissertations when she should read a book and learn to: 1. Don't be racist. 2. Make music that people enjoy. 3. Know your audience 4. Don't victimize yourself to vilify prominent women of color because you're mad you don't have their success (aka don't be racist).

    • @CutiePatootiest
      @CutiePatootiest 4 года назад +7

      @5,ooo LightYears Away i agree with you on that honestly. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to monopolize your sexual agency, I do feel that there is also that pressure to do that. I know Nicki and Cardi both stated in interviews that they wanted to express the power they have over their sexual agency, but I feel like the exploitation of former sex workers like Cardi or the sexual identity/expression of women who grew up in the industry like Beyoncé are something we should keep an eye on. I feel that sex object is a social status that is primarily pushed onto women of color due to the stereotyping of hypersexualization that Lana fed into. By painting women who hypothetically have or could have sex as their narrative "unfeminine and dominant" jezebel other in comparison to the ideologically/sexually pure "delicate and submissive" good as Lana has done we are undermining individual women's case by case sexual expression /identity. An example of sexual pressure on the opposite end (despite her not being a woc) would be how Britney was forced into marketing the concept of her virginity to the point of having a movie made about it. I ultimately want media in general to be able to have women create content without sex being something that has to be inserted into their message outside of them saying "i want to make content about that". (Sorry this was long all this shit really is getting under my skin especially since there is so much exploitation in the music industry )

NFR has been her most beautiful, vulnerable, and artistically authentic record to date. listening to it i got the sense of a woman who has matured, come to terms with who she is and is ready to step away from the persona she has created. then she goes on this mindless rant that completely reverses all the growth she’s shown in NFR. i know quarantine has people wildin but it’s like she’s completely regressed

And her lyrics are still trash problematic idgaf, singing in a “glamorous” way about abusive relationships and making aesthetically pleasing videos about it is glamourizing, she’s pulling the “I didn’t ask to be a role model when I got famous” card. She’s really putting her “hit me and felt like a kiss” lyrics in the same category as doja feelin herself and being cute?
    And lol her response to the backlash is I love these women I’m not racist 😂😂

      I love Lana’s music but she obscured her point by sounding bitter and jealous vs voicing a real issue about intersectional feminism and how her place in it is questionable. Everyone she mentions has had their battles with feminism, misogyny, death threats racism but they clearly refused to crumble under it all and persist to get where they did. Lana has a right to voice her concerns but she didn’t need to invalidate others who had to face. Ten times more criticism than she has. Her privilege is showing and it’s not anyone’s doing but her own.
