no because i always thought a few Indian (and one Pakistani, ppl couldn’t tell the difference🙃) friends of mine growing up in particular were just stunning human beings, and i saw them develop the same kinds of complexes about their looks from racist comments growing up. i’m white and we grew up in a very white state/town, our town just had proportionally quite a few Indian americans. it’s crazy how normalized micro aggressions were against them were til the day we graduated by a lot of people, i’m glad i had the sense to reflect on that shit as i matured, but man :/ that shit stays with you. i’m still in close contact with the friend who was Pakistani not Indian (but that didn’t make a difference) in particular, and i *know* that shit stuck with him. and i may be biased (he’s just a year younger than me lmao, but i “adopted” him as my grandson), but beyond being crazy talented, he’s always been so handsome, but years of subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) mockery and racism told him otherwise, and it’s hard to get over that even when he’s able to recognize that since we still go to a PWI in the midwest!! at least he and i are graduating soon😅

@@poppaelias4175 indians are a mixture of ethic groups, a dude from the South isn't the same as a dude from the North (in terms of looks and culture) so dont worry, even indians like me can't tell the difference between indians and pakistani in looks, maybe language and accent. Indians grow up in an environment of micro aggressions with religion and cast and skin color and the ability to speak and write in English, I mean we have a thriving skin whitening industry, heck I bought into it too because upper caste indians are usually whiter in skin color. It's horrible ik, so yea, foreigners making fun of us as "haha call centre people" Well that's nothing and we intern normalized racism towards ourselves, hell, rn I'm whitewashed..... I'm so glad you left this comment because I actually put this one off because I low key expected it to be sad. I haven't been watching anything new lately so I really don't have any frame of reference for what Indian representation has been looking like outside of like...Mindy Kaling - someone I think people need to be way less harsh on - and Lilly Singh - someone who needs way more criticism in my opinion - and I don't feel like they're really like...great examples. Not like they're negative examples just that they've been around for a while and I don't know about the more recent movies and shows going on right now. Hell yeah. I'm stoked.

i think people often forget that Pop Culture™ isn't just movies we watch and songs we hear, but it *is* culture. it has just as much influence on us, positive and negative, as any other part of culture. on how we view each other, ourselves, and the world. forgetting that is why so many people dismiss the importance of representation. well, that, and when you're the one always being represented it's easy to overlook everyone else

I'm glad Netflix passed on this because this movie definitely deserved a theatrical release. It might be hot for a few weeks or worse. It would be lost in the deluge that is content on Netflix, and they wouldn't have pushed it the way it needed to be. Thank you Saji for talking about this. People often ask me why should there be Indian representation in films in the US and UK. Why can't those Indians watch Bollywood movies? I answer why shouldn't there be? Indians make up some of the largest immigrant populations in those countries, why should they be hidden from view and ignored? And Indian immigrants face different issues and live lives that aren't represented in Indian cinema. Don't they deserve to watch movies with Indian or South Asian leads in situations they relate to? And more positive representation can also help break the stereotypes people have of South Asians in general. It is very sad to see how rampant casual racism is against Indians online. Hopefully Dev's new movie is only the first step in the right direction.

They'd probably also tell Korean people to "just watch kdramas" when asking for representation. People of all kinds can be anywhere and people should strive to depict that in a positive way, it's not that complicated

      @xbluebirdx Месяц назад

that same dumb logic can be applied to any immigrant. why should black people be represented? why should japanese or chinese or korean or any other be represented? people should just go watch movies from the country they originated from. only white americans should be there (like it has been forever)

one of my biggest insecurities growing up south asian is people not being able to see south asia (not just people but also our entire way of life: cultures, languages, diversity, religions, etc.) in the present tense. i often felt like i only existed in the past tense, that i was soley the remanants of a forgotten civilization that had only reached its peak pre british colonialism. the reality is that southern asia is 1/4 of the entire globe's population. we are the future. though it saddens me that most people's education on the world is dictated by western media-a media that depicts south asian beauty in way of life and phenotype as having no proper place in the 21st century-may Monkey Man be a proper formal invitation to India and Indian ways of life in all its ethnic, linguistic, cultural, and religious diversity. i'm sure one day when the world stops exploiting south asia for its garments, we will all be wearing Indian clothing, one day we will also be wearing African gold, and traversing a world with no borders. i just hope to live to see the day. regardless of any attempts the western world has of dehumanizing us out of intimdation and as a justification for their continued exploitation, we are survivors and our histories are omnipresent. India is everywhere and influences everything.
thank you for centering Indian voices. it's daunting to risk defining youself by being solely an Indian when there are so many other complexties and nuances to you outside such an already complex and nuanced title of being Indian, but brave and especially necesary in today's world. you are truly a whole people's soft power right now, addressing the lack of knowledge where many platforms themselves fail to address their hate speech. regardless of whether this reaches those who need it the most, it has reached me and for that i am grateful. you Saji embody the greatest forms of perservance. you are ancient and modern and timeless. in every Indian is you, ane we are everywhere.

I loved this movie so much and I wanted to put it out there that it arguably passes the Bechdel Test - it’s not really a conversation but the scene Kid first sees Sita is when she’s in Queenie’s office being berated
I wasn’t mad about it at all though because one of the biggest differences from John Wick is that you really get a very full idea of the person Neela (Kid’s mom) was - she is loving, kind, gentle but also stood her ground and has autonomy. Sita is also portrayed as having a range of emotions, character traits, and again, autonomy. Even though they are side characters, they have their own motivations and exist more than to further the plot.
I also love that Sita wasn’t portrayed as a romantic interest to shoe horn in a subplot that would not have been necessary. They gave great “fellow comrade” energy and it’s sad that that felt revolutionary.
I suppose that being Asian, all Asian boys’ first love has to be their mothers and as facetious as that statement is, I appreciate that we now have a revenge action movie that isn’t about a man going on a rampage because they took his hapless wife or daughter, where it feels more like they stole some property. What they took from Kid was not someone that a patriarchal society would have considered someone “less” than him, but that he lost everything that would have kept him safe in this world as a child - his mother, their home, and their community. The way I perceived Kid’s motivation after the attack on the temple, that because the Hijra, the community, and their temple became a second home to him, he didn’t need to see the brutality that would befall them because he already experienced it once; he couldn’t fight then but he could and had to fight now. We see him getting more and more comfortable in the community as he was healing and I think that was a good choice because showing extreme violence towards a very marginalized group like the Hijra can border on bad taste.

And when I mentioned the topic to my mother she pulled from her hat more East Asian sex symbols in books, tv series...from her youth, which are, has to be said, very stereotypical, orientalist and weird, but represented in a positive light as men of adventures, pirates, doctors...

YESSSS! I've been waiting for this review! I truly cannot say enough good things about this movie, and it makes me so happy that you love it too! My hope is that the success of this movie can inspire many more diverse and unique perspectives in Hollywood and perhaps even provide Dev Patel an ample budget to make a sequel (the only time I will ever be in support of an action movie sequel 😤)

its a shame that this is still awaiting release in india. probably won't release until the election season is over, and if it ever does, it'll probably have big cuts. the fact that they had to change the colour of the banners shown in the trailer (as well as the movie) is indicative of the team preparing for imminent backlash. sucks because its looks extremely relevant to the current social-political climate in the country.

one of my fav things is how vulnerable the hero was too. dev's character is clearly suffering from untreated ptsd throughout and it impacts his ability to reach his goals.
also the scene where he trains to the beat of the tabla was one of the most beautiful things ive seen.
and thank you jordan peele for doing us all a solid to ensure it made it to theatres
agree with the point on fleshing out the hijra struggle and how it could inspire him more deeply
i think a lot of things had to be shortened due to the intense limitations placed on the film's production
and im def more harold and kumar than monkey man myself lmao

I wonder if some of the criticisms (which I also share but adore the film regardless, Its currently my 2nd favourite film of the year) were originally addressed etc. In the script but the difficulties with production meant they weren't able to shoot those scenes or maybe in post they didn't come together as well as they'd hoped... who knows but yeah more time with the hijra community and alphonso would have been great and a bit more clarity on some of the politics would have further enhanced the film imo.

This movie was absolutely needed. It's a damn shame a sub-par movie like Barbie is glamorised but Monkey Man doesn't get the respect it deserves.
There is no other movie like Monkey Man.

I know you kinda played it for laughs at the beginning but I think it’s really important for young brown guys to see an Indian guy widely regarded as sexy. So many of the Indian incels you’ve talked about I feel like have this deep insecurity and self hatred bc they’ve only seen Indian people portrayed as the butt of a joke and next someone to be desired. There are quite a few famously beautiful Indian women (think priyanka chopra) for young brown girls in a society with white beauty standards to look to and see that their features are desired but not really anyone like that for boys. I feel like famous Indian men get treated like Aziz Ansari and never are portrayed as love interests (at least in American media bc Bollywood is a different story)

The idea of India according to the west and also Indians who grow up outside is that of North India, be it in terms of cuisine, culture or clothing (mostly Punjab, delhi and those areas since most Indians who immigrate to the US and Canada are north Indians mostly punjabis) which hardly 20% of the whole country.
Btw I grew up in India and there isn't a single slum in my hometown. Dev Patel is always the quintessential slum kid in almost all his movies which in turn helps further the stereotype that all of India is a big slum or crowded and polluted areas which is true of cities like Delhi and Mumbai, where these areas exist. But you never see the cold places or beautiful hill stations of India. My lived experience is nothing like what I have seen in Hollywood movies. I grew up in the lap of nature in a pretty privileged middle income household. Clean hometown covered with pine trees and waterfalls. Clean crystal clear water bodies. Foggy landscapes, canyons. Middle income or upper middle class households mostly. Google Meghalaya if intrigued. Also physically or look wise I guess people in the US would label us as "asians" or south east asian but never guess we are Indians since we have small eyes and mongoloid features

@@JJogadi True. Also the cinema of eastern states of India are often ignored by the mainstream who like the masala of North and South. There are so many great independent films from Assam, also the legacy of West Bengal; who can forget the contribution of Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen, not just to Indian cinema but to World Cinema.
When it comes to representation there is no representation in any pan-Indian movie or at a very surface level

As a white American who married a (very handsome 😁) Indian, I get annoyed when my coworkers keep making rude stereotypical jokes about him in front of me, as if I would find it funny for some reason. I don’t, I just find it completely inaccurate. It happens so much where I see Americans around me just make fun of Indian culture and India. We all have complex lives, thoughts, emotions, and problems. Film has a massive influence on people, and if all they see is a silly portrayal of a culture or type of person, that’s all they’ll come to understand. Glad there are at least some movies out there available to Americans where the Indian characters are taken seriously and have complex emotions, as well as not just being the butt of every joke or the side character.
