Most bass singers are in the 2s. Low low low basses are in 1s. O's are just insane. .....B0 is the 2nd note from the bottom of the piano
And then you think about the fact that a piano encompasses 7 octaves, and Geoff's voice span's 5 of them... It still blows my mind when I visualize it on a piano keyboard.
Geoff is a HUGE fan of Thurl Ravenscroft, the original vocalist for "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." (Everyone else has mentioned that VoicePlay covered that one.)
*However* I'm going to mention *my* favorite Thurl Ravenscroft cover that Geoff has done: "The Headless Horseman."
Ditto this comment!
Pentatonix also covered he's a mean one Mr. Grinshill.
My favorite thing about this piece is that those three notes are all the same pitch. He sang them with three different techniques. Just amazing.
I See Fire is even more amazing. I wasn't familiar with either of them, didn't matter.
I am enjoying your Geoff giggles so much, can't wait for the next one! And Voiceplay drops their new one on Friday June 16. Be prepared!
Voiceplay did Grinch, you will love it! They did the Chipmunk Song last Christmas which I HATE, but I love Voiceplay's version!!
When he hits that last note its subharmonic B1. He has hit a Subharmonic B0
I don't know what that is and I'm still impressed 😂❤
the very first drop was a G1 subharmonic note. the second big one was a G1 chest note. the very last note was a G1 breathy chest note. the exact same note, just using different techniques.
Geoff has done the Grinch song with VoicePlay, and it's really good! I definitely recommend that one. You will also get to hear how amazing of a voice actor Eli is in that one, as he is the one voicing the grinch character that is being played by an unknown (secret) grinch actor.
They're Gs, not Es
I'm 90% sure that last note was a growl.
@@vvoof2601 no, Geoff himself said it was a breathy chest note.
@@camctrail yup, you're right. Sorry, was trying to do 2 things at once 😅
@@huldradraco k
We all now know Geoff's new one is I see fire from the Hobbit. And yes, it is fire🔥
We are recording our reaction to it, tonight! Can't wait!
@@weaintraisedrightpodcast didn't think it would be long before you jumped on it. ♥🇬🇧
@@weaintraisedrightpodcast that's awesome. This song done by Geoff is so Mello & sad. It fits the meaning of the words better than any other versions. Geoff really knows how to reach deep down into your soul when he sings his solos.
That B0 you mentioned for Geoff can be heard in “Valhalla Calling” Geoff hits it several times, with an especially long hold early on in the song. I know you all already reacted to it but you might want to go back to it personally to hear the B0.
Every Geoff Castellucci video with more than 1 Geoff, ALL the voices and Sounds are from Goeff. And I just learned this a few years ago. The notes start at C and end with B. C,D,E,F,G,A,B. That is 1 Octave. So a C1 is Lower than an A1. Again, I just learned that a few years ago. Just trying to spread some info to you like it was spread to me. Great Post.
We have the exact four Dwarfs in Geoffs' newest release "I See Fire" from the second Hobbit movie The Desolation of Smaug. Waiting to see if he picks a song from the third movie The Battle of the Five Armies. Tripple Feature.
That would be amazing!
I’ve watched good reaction videos, but when AJ realizes that all four are Geoff. Incredible.
This is probably my favorite reaction to Misty Mountains so far! You guys are great!
One reactor who is a singing coach said that those low notes were the third note from the end of the piano!
Please keep reacting to Geoff and his group VoicePlay 😁
VoicePlay did Your a mean one Mr. Grinch, too😊
Oh wow! Thank you so much!!!
@@weaintraisedrightpodcastIn the Voice Play cover Eli did the voice for the Grinch. He is a voice actor as well as a high rock tenor.
FYI: The lowest note a piano has is A0. So a piano can only go one note lower than Geoff.
Also: He can get up in a high tenor falsetto super nice. You don’t hear his upper range limits here.
The new one with the dwarves is out. It’s I See Fire from The Hobbit.
Most of his other solo pieces go higher than this.
Yes, Layne, Eli, and Tony all help him behind the scenes in his solo stuff. He hires a pro for fancy make up.
It’s not the season for it yet, but his version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman is a surprising jam.
For range, watch his vid for Ain’t No Sunshine. He’ll be high up and just casually bounce down like four octaves then right back up again.
VoicePlay did a take on the Grinch song, yes, Geoff had the lead. 😊
As to how to make it better…I vote for more. Y’all are fun. 😁
Thank you, so much! We love the positive feedback! We just recorded a reaction to I see fire. It should be up in less than two weeks!
Joe's visual happiness gives me years of life and brings me back to when i first heard the song in the movies. Even thou i prefer the original song, this one hits right in my heart, reminds me when i first read the Hobbit back when i was a wee lad of 7.
Baruk Khazad, Khazad ai Menu!
Dude......that was insane!
IN the follow up to this, I See Fire, from The Desolation of Smaug he gives each of his dwarves a solo spot so you get to hear all his range better. And it's out now. Here they are mostly in harmony. That note, by the way isn't the lowest he can go, but that's pretty low. He can go down to a B0 which I think is the third white note on a piano. The note below bottom C. And he can go up to A5 I believe. I believe that Geoff makes any song better. His arrangements are beautiful and his editing skills are just great. VoicePlay have done the Grinch.
Geoff has just a cover of I see fire from the hobbit, you should check that out as well. His range is bonkers in that as well
Tim Foust of Homefree does a rendition of this song with Peter Hollens. Both Tim and Geoff have a 5 octave range
Can't wait for y'all to see Geoff's I See Fire! 🔥🔥🔥
We've seen it! We are posting it in less than two weeks
Thanks for your reaction. 😆
Huge Tolkin fan. I just loved what Geoff did with this fan.
If you look in the details you can see who helps Geoff in creating his masterpieces.
You'll love I See Fire, its full if surprises. Looking forward to more reactions.
How is it even possible to project your voice like that. They are amazing. Great reactions!!!
Geoff. Yes. Just yes. Love you guys.
Thank you! Love ya back!
You should definitely check out some of his other solo stuff to see his range - 16 Tons, Ain't No Sunshine, House of the Rising Sun, and more. Voiceplay's Oogie Boogie (Geoff leads) shows his high to low slide so effectively.
For some more of the 'Geoff's', I would suggest 'Sixteen Tons', 'Big Bad John' - his lowest recorded note (so far!) is a B0 in sub-harmonics, he hit this the first time in VP's cover of the 'Halo' theme music - love to see what you guys make of that, only a handul of words are 'spoken', as the track is an instrumental..!! 😊
The grinch song by Voiceplay is fabulous!
It's definitely on the list
For the best example of Geoff's range, I feel "I See Fire,'' the sequel (of sorts) to this, shows his range best. All five octaves of it!
We reacted to that one as well!
@@weaintraisedrightpodcast Yeah, I just watched (love the reaction!), and left a recommendation for you guys. It occurs to me I should mention that "The Hillywood Show" does MUSICAL parodies of movies and TV shows. Usually. A couple aren't, like "The Umbrella Academy" and a large portion of the "Goode Omens" one.
Another 5 octave Basso Profundo is Tim Foust of the acapella group Home Free. Tim does a rendition of Misty Mountains with Peter Hollens that is phenomenal! Peter is a tenor and Tim is the bass! Please check it out, thank you!
Thank you! We will. We've reacted to home free a few times on our channel, if you'd like to check those out.
Man, I can't wait for you guys to see the new one, "I See Fire!" His range is on full display in that one. ❤
We're releasing our reaction to that, next Tuesday!
@@weaintraisedrightpodcast yay! Lol. I'll be looking forward to that!
VoicePlay have done a cover of You're a mean one Mr Grinch, it's really good and lots of fun.
Small correction, most basses don't touch the B1 (note before C2), so considering phonating the first oktave is already a rare thing in irself. An average baritone bottoms out at a F,G or A2, lower tenosrs often bottom oit at C3 or B2, so he had a 2 oktave jump there. To make everything sound a bit nicer, everybody can reach into the first oltave with a growl (what he's using), add an equaliser and a growl sounds surprisingly decent, here's the catch tho. Sustaining a note with a growl is hella difficult, and for most people the first time they growl ot's hella uncomfty. So people might say, oh yeah, I can do it to with a growl, but the truth is, from hitting something, to sustaining something, it's a world of a difference. And that growl is sustained in pitch and in quality (I actually growl for fun since a year, and I still struggle sustaining both)
Y'all are so funny... love your reactions
Thank you!
This is an amazing rendition by Geoff.
The VoicePlay version of the Grinch is very good too but if you love the bass voice, you them need to follow that one up with yet another glorious bass, Elliott Robinson. He did a very good continuation video; The Grinch Rebuttal Not So Mean.
The Wellerman also did Misty Mountain. 14 basses at once. Also very enjoyably.
I have yet to see a bad video by Geoff solo or Voiceplay in all the years (I'd say 5, shortly after J. None joined them) I've been watching them. Of course, I like some more (because that's just the way it is with songs), like, some are a 9/10, the others 8-8.5/0, and a few 20/10s thrown in too! Also, a couple (out of 5 years worth), mind you, I'd give a 7/10 (but watching reactions to them seems to help raise their score a bit). But these guys aren't just making music, they're creating art, and they make me just extremally happy! I listen to them every night, it's part of my pre-bed routine.
THAT note was a G1 and he sung it with three different vocal techniques:
subharmonics (first 2), chest or modal for the one in the middle of the cover and the last one with a little bit of growl
Hi y'all love his low notes
They're the best!
I can't remember if you guys reacted to the 'Oogie Boogie' song but it shows some of Geoff's range. This Tolkien song was also covered by Tim Foust paired with Petter Hollins their version is beautiful too. The same layered technique is used on their song but voice only- no other instruments.
It's on our list to react to.
Geoff does his own arrangements and has used Pattycake studios for some of the sets. Pattycake is owned by Layne and Tony Wakim (previous Voiceplay member). Eli does a lot of the lighting for him and The boss of it all is Kathy his wife stage management organisation etc.
For me, Geoff's signature song is 'Sixteen tons' becausehe does all the voices himself.
It's pretty awesome! We reacted to it a week or so ago.
Geoff has described himself as a baritone that can sing bass notes
you need to hear him do blackbird or high and dry! ❤🏴
Added!
Also you can really hear is range in Oogie boogie song from nightmare before Christmas. Or dreaming of a white Christmas. Enjoy the Geoff rabbit hole
Great reaction guys.
Geoff released his video Friday.... I See Fire.
Its in the credits at the end of Hobbit 2.
We are recording our reaction to it, tonight! It's been agony not to watch the video, yet! Lol
All the standout lows in this were E1s, just in different techniques. The last one does seem lower but because it’s in breathy chest voice rather than subs, it has more resonance and rumble. E1s are almost a comfy low note for Geoff nowadays, both in chest and in subs.
Also this cover barely even scratches the surface of Geoff’s tenor range 😂
Love your reactions. Welcome to the Geoff rabbit hole!
Thank you!! 😁. If that was you that just subbed, thanks again!
Do reccomend doing a reaction for this song by Tim Foust & Peter Hollens!
Dont forget the Oogie Boogie song he does with Voiceplay :-)
It's on our list
I see fire new one dwarves are back he killed!
We just reacted to it on Tuesday. We're releasing it on the 27th! It's amazing!!!
Y’all should definitely listen to hide and seek by the Bass Gang!!!! You lose your minds!
on the list!
Great reaction! You HAVE to listen to his newest cover „I see fire“! 😀
We are recording our reaction tonight!
@@weaintraisedrightpodcast Can‘t wait to see it !
Yes, Geoff can get up into the tenor range (and sound great doing it) though I don't think he can quite match his colleague Eli or former VoicePlay member Earl. The guy's phenomenal. Also, AJ: I've known and loved the old Rankin/Bass cartoon and its version of this song for as long as I can remember. I'd love to hear Geoff or VoicePlay do a cover of that one someday.
😂😂 отличная реакция ❤
Oh no this isn't a good example of his range, watch either his High and dry cover or Blackbird cover. Then you will really see it.
It's naht a tuba!! /Arnie
LOL
Why is the sound of the video messed up?
Our equipment was poor at the time. We've done a few things to try to improve since then
@@weaintraisedrightpodcast you’re good, I thought it was a youtube issue
to really get his range see voiceplay oogie boogie song especially the end of it
It is on the list!
