All three G1's hit were done with a different technique. First was a subharmonic, second was a full chest (super beefy), and third was a growl paying a bit of homage to Tim Faust's version.

I've watched this a few times before and never noticed that drone he's singing as the alternate Geoffs are sitting down until now. I swear, given the range he's developed with his voice, it's like he looked at a grand piano and said, "no, this will not do."

I usually HATE it when reactors do that, typically because the reactor is dominating instead of singing "with." Your voice is lovely and you aren't trying to overpower the performance, so it really works.

So, in the phrase "The shadows LAY" it's a very rich Chest G1, and the last G1 it's another chest G1 with so much air... And the other are Subharmonics G1's. Geoff has a HUGE range, his lowest note in chest it's a F1, B0 in subharmonics.

Great reaction! This might be one of my favourite things he's done. It's got some tough competition with his other beautiful covers, but I'm a Tolkien nerd at heart and he just did such an incredible job. I actually teared up the first time I heard it - something about those low bass hums and the strings just got to me. So good!!
As a fellow Tolkien nerd I particularly enjoy that the last verse of Geoff's version is actually from the version Pippin and Merry sing in LOTR. Makes me think he is a Tolkien nerd too, lol.

His G1s sound different depending if it's in full chest, fry being added, or in subharmonics. He's been extended his low chest, so to cite TheCharasmaticVoice, the first was full chest and last was subharmonic. That would be why you may be catching a hint of G0.
Ok. Been playin drums since I was 7. The simplicity of the percussion really accents the vocals, while at the same time gives such a good groove and feel to the song! UGH!! We won't even get into his low notes(cuz wow!). All in all. Great harmony. Great (for lack of a better term) soul!. Love it

As usual, a beautifully enthusiastic reaction, Maggie. I think Geoff's range is at least 3 1/2 octaves. Unless you count his subharmonic singing, which probably adds another octave. I often wonder if being in the same room as Geoff while he's singing would be anything like being in a cathedral that has a 64' diapason set on its organ - sound so low that you feel it more than hear it.
Today 10/9 we are live on Twitch at 3PM. Hoist the Colours is on the list (by my request) and Geoff does another beautiful low to high jump. I didn't pull out the keyboard to test but at a guess I'd say it's a 3/4 octave jump. Hope to see you there!

This is the BEST bass I have heard in decades. Such wonderful tone and control. His bottom notes are unreal. Well girl what did you think? I did the same thing you did. It took a while for me to figure out that he was all of these people. That last note is so low it is underground. I am stunned at how good this man can sing. As always I enjoyed your video. I have my degree in film. This is every bit a 3 camera set up. Each take covers multiple angles to interlace all of it together. Could be 4 just for extra coverage, but likely. The editing of this is where the real nightmare lies. 3 to 4 cameras all having multiple takes becomes hundreds of hours of film to process down. This is the type of work I love. The nitty-gritty. I appreciate the hell out of any singer working with film. It why I did it. I never would have pursued a film degree if it hadn't been for my High School Musicals.

Sometimes he uses his true voice on the low notes, and sometimes he uses subharmonics. But he's also been actively working to extend and round out his range so that his lowest and highest notes have more fullness. He's so impressive.
Seriously, you should check out Voice Play's recent 'Hoist the Colors' (from Pirates of the Caribbean). Geoff did the arrangement, and it is outstanding - truly EPIC. Every singer is used to the utmost of their capabilities. Eli's tenor is given a crazy workout, new member Cesar de la Rosa reveals some impressive power, and of course, Geoff kills the bass.

Curious for more examination. I've heard a few other comments mentioning that the last note may actually be a G0, with the harmonic octave above coming through as "primary". Either way...this man is a BEAST. And so are you! Keep doing you darlin'!

he's hit a G0 which is lower, he does this often, gets mistaken for a G1 by some

The three separate G1s (he also hit one in the beginning so four) are all sang with different techniques (subharmonic, subharmonic, chest, vocal fry/growl) and then different applied production to make it contrast
I am completely blown away by his voice, his fantastic range and control. I would love to hear more by him!

His G1s sound different depending if it's in full chest, fry being added, or in subharmonics. He's been extended his low chest, so to cite TheCharasmaticVoice, the first was full chest and last was subharmonic. That would be why you may be catching a hint of G0.
The real issue with this comment for me is the fact that he can actually sing a G1 in full chest, i can barely do it in subharmonics
Pretty sure the first G1 was a sub. The last one was too breathy to be a sub.

Ok. Been playin drums since I was 7. The simplicity of the percussion really accents the vocals, while at the same time gives such a good groove and feel to the song! UGH!! We won't even get into his low notes(cuz wow!). All in all. Great harmony. Great (for lack of a better term) soul!. Love it

It's a subharmonic G -1 I think. He's capable of going well below the given notes on a piano and I think I once heard him nail a F -2.

I think Geoff's range is at least 3 1/2 octaves. Unless you count his subharmonic singing, which probably adds another octave.
I often wonder if being in the same room as Geoff while he's singing would be anything like being in a cathedral that has a 64' diapason set on its organ - sound so low that you feel it more than hear it.
Today 10/9 we are live on Twitch at 3PM. Hoist the Colours is on the list (by my request) and Geoff does another beautiful low to high jump. I didn't pull out the keyboard to test but at a guess I'd say it's a 3/4 octave jump. Hope to see you there!

I want to thank you. I had never seen this video, but these men are great. Talk about a bass. The instrument selection is a perfect fit. This is one of the best videos I have seen in ages. DAMN!
This version is a little too “pop”py for my taste, but I cannot get over how easily he hits those low notes. A G1 will give me chills every time.
He is balancing on the edge between clean voice and smthng like strohbass beautiful technique.

This is the BEST bass I have heard in decades. Such wonderful tone and control. His bottom notes are unreal. Well girl what did you think? I did the same thing you did. It took a while for me to figure out that he was all of these people. That last note is so low it is underground. I am stunned at how good this man can sing. As always I enjoyed your video. How does Geoff have three levels of a G1? Insane!! Three overtones for a G1 is maddening. Prodigy-level.

His harmonics go into the infrasonic registers which is why although the root note is a G1, the undertones are deeper. Incredible!
His last note just about matched the Horn of Helm’s Deep.
I have my degree in film. This is every bit a 3 camera set up. Each take covers multiple angles to interlace all of it together. Could be 4 just for extra coverage, but likely. The editing of this is where the real nightmare lies. 3 to 4 cameras all having multiple takes becomes hundreds of hours of film to process down. This is the type of work I love. The nitty-gritty. I appreciate the hell out of any singer working with film. It why I did it. I never would have pursued a film degree if it hadn't been for my High School Musicals.
G1 with Fry >>> Vibrates straight into the bone marrow & stays there ! Yes - amazing. And all Geoff! Looks like he had lots of fun playing dress ups too - as if a Viking Quadruplet just stepped of their long boat. 🤩

Sometimes he uses his true voice on the low notes, and sometimes he uses subharmonics. But he's also been actively working to extend and round out his range so that his lowest and highest notes have more fullness. He's so impressive.
Seriously, you should check out Voice Play's recent 'Hoist the Colors' (from Pirates of the Caribbean). Geoff did the arrangement, and it is outstanding - truly EPIC. Every singer is used to the utmost of their capabilities. Eli's tenor is given a crazy workout, new member Cesar de la Rosa reveals some impressive power, and of course, Geoff kills the bass.

Curious for more examination. I've heard a few other comments mentioning that the last note may actually be a G0, with the harmonic octave above coming through as "primary". Either way...this man is a BEAST. And so are you! Keep doing you darlin'!

I just noticed that he hits G1 three times here, but he does it in three different techniques. 1st time was a subharmonic G1, the second time was his full chest voice, and the last was a growl. He has so much control over what his vocal folds do. It’s ridiculous.
