    I've never seen a reaction channel do both Misty Mountains and I See Fire in the same video - that was really interesting!
    As for Geoff's high range - I think right now the highest note he's hit in a video is a Bb5 in one of VoicePlay's shorts (Peaches), where he's really taking a run at Eli's rock-tenor status. Geoff has said that when he was young, he really wanted to be a rock tenor, and (guessing here) then puberty hit. But he can still hit amazing high notes for someone with as naturally deep a voice as he has.
    Something that kind of gets overlooked a lot is Geoff's skill at arranging music. He did both of these pieces (he does all of the pieces on his solo channel), and he does about 1/2 of the arrangements for VoicePlay (Layne Stein, the beatboxer, does almost all of the others). That's one of the things I especially like about I See Fire, the arrangement is just so good, gradually adding instruments until the climax is reached. That high solo piano during the 2nd chorus is especially effective on me!
    Since you guys know Cesar, it's not impossible that Geoff might be willing to come on your channel. He's done interviews with Elizabeth Zharoff (The Charismatic Voice) and Peter Barber, so it's not completely out of the question.
    Geoff - Prove Me Wrong!

  • @kathrynmenzel2615
    @kathrynmenzel2615 Год назад +72

    Geoff says that he wanted to be a rock tenor but ended up a base. I think that is why he has retained access to high notes even while continually expanding his unearthly lower range. He is such a great example of practice makes perfect.

    • @johndeeregreen4592
      @johndeeregreen4592 Год назад +12

      Sort of. But his upper chest voice extends to B4 (one note from tenor high C5). This is purely genetic and very rare for a bass.

    • @BiasWordSmith
      @BiasWordSmith Год назад +5

      He did say he wanted to be like Eli and be able to belt those gritty rock tenor belts. What's funny. Geoff doesn't believe he's a true bass and apparently Laine doesn't either. Geoff's words not mine.

    • @johndeeregreen4592
      @johndeeregreen4592 Год назад +1

      @@BiasWordSmith, Geoff's resonance at E2 definitely says he's a true bass. Yes, many baritones can get to an E2, but it's weak and often barely suitable for a choir. No, Geoff is not a true LOW bass, basso, or anything like that. But in the real world of voice classification, he is definitely a true bass.

    • @BiasWordSmith
      @BiasWordSmith Год назад +8

      Watch his interview with Peter Barber on RUclips. Geoff discussed that he thinks he's a low tenor. It's funny because the video is basically Peter trying to convince Geoff he's a bass. I thought he was joking but, Geoff seems very sincere in his answers.

    • @johndeeregreen4592
      @johndeeregreen4592 Год назад +9

      @@BiasWordSmith, oh, I seen it. I think Geoff needs to talk to a music professor on the subject. I have a minor in music, I am a trained basso, have taught voice for over 25 years, so I know a thing or two about vocal range and voice classification. Geoff's baritone range is strong like a Hoher bass, but able to go deeper than one. Even a strong baritone doesn't have a G2 with Geoff's power. On no planet is Geoff a tenor of any sort. Even his 1st and 2nd passaggio belie that; you can clearly hear the changes in his voice.

    Geoff is definitely unique for a bass, in his ability to maintain chest voice up to B4, rise into a mixed voice above many tenors, while riding a riff back down into his chest voice above where most baritones sit in the top of their chest voice. Crazy flexibility.

    Loved your reaction/analysis especially the spider web. Please do more Geoff/VoicePlay! When he worked at Disney and Universal he was usually pegged as a tenor, and back when he was in school he was certain he would be a tenor. In Enemy, he hit a A0 growl, in Halo a couple of B0s sub and in Valhalla Calling extended B0s again subs one for 14 seconds. His full chest is usually F#1 but I'm pretty sure he's done F1. His falsetto got extended to Bb5 in Peaches (SuperMario). What I love about his voice is the resonance and clarity, nothing muddy about him. He did an interview with Peter Barber and tried to convince him that he was really a baritone with some lower reach. Peter argued with him saying that just because he wasn't Glenn Miller didn't mean he wasn't a bass. That man was 1 in a billion. I would love to hear both of you interview him. I really enjoyed his most recent solo - Folsom Prison Blues. He doesn't have a bad one, really. Nor does VoicePlay. Both seem to be at the top of their game. Another you might enjoy picking apart is the Bass Gang who are in the middle of a 4 song drop - they just did Arabian Nights. Peter Barber, Tomi P and Bobby Bass (3 of the 4) had traveled to the Czech Republic and the 4th, Marwan lives in Egypt and was going to join them for Arabian Nights but couldn't get clearance on his visa so had to find a location for his part, camera crew, dancer, and set up communications with the group. He's 19 and I can't wait to see how he does as his voice matures. They also did the 2nd song, Be Prepared, done in a cave. They will be a force to be reckoned with.

    I'm going to ask you to also 'prove us wrong'. This particular video of Geoff's does have a bit of an ending that you guys didn't stay for. However, it is not really necessary for this song. You might want to keep listening yourselves all the while until the Patreon list comes up, as both Geoff & VoicePlay have been known to add interesting stuff then. When you get around to "Halo" and "Drunken Sailor" be positive to wait for the list.
    Just FYI, also - Geoff is the one playing the piano on his songs - as well as any plug-ins (like the guitar on "Folsom Prison Blues") Eli from VoicePlay (tenor) did the lighting for this video. He programs it and leaves it for Kathy (Geoff's wife & VP's production manager) to put in action. She also sometimes is the camera operator, but sometimes it is Layne (VP's beatboxer). And the first video ya'll did today was filmed at Layne's production studio, PattyCake. A great many of VP's & Geoff's videos are done there. Layne co-owns it with Tony Wakim, who was once VP's baritone. He left because he really preferred to be behind the scenes. That 'castle-look' is PattyCake's set for their own videos of "Villains' Lair". A bunch of Disney Villains all working together.

As a long time follower of Geoff and Voiceplay, I really enjoyed watching the happy surprises of his exceptional range and where you give comparative analyses. The way you guys transition between movies and music sounds so much like me and my brother 😂.
    For your diagram, that was the coolest thing I've seen for vocal details and abilities. I myself, completely agreed with your comment of having a large range doesn't make you a good singer. I'm also the best example of that 😢😂. I can go almost as low as Geoff, but can go higher than him and even have some whistletone but can't control it to save my life. Think my range on your diagram being maxed out and the strength maybe halfway, with the rest nonexistent. Learning how to sing past the confines of my truck would be amazing lol. The vocal fry you mentioned and that vibration of the larynx, I have a lot of in my lower registers (D1-A1).
    Ultimately, you have a new sub and like and I can't wait to see you guys react to more of his and Voiceplays music! Watching VP reactions have become somewhat of a favorite pastime and am always excited to see people in shock even when they know all the singers and their abilities.
    "Prove me wrong" Thronelyfans... omfg😂

    Geoff has done a few shorts. Five of them are songs that he has not done as full covers. Some of them are goofy family things, pickle sandwiches, worms for the garden and makeing pizza. A couple of them were made as teasers, and the rest are live, no effects, just showing how he did those lines.
    Geoff does play the piano, he's done it in a few covers including the one that comes out on Saturday. You will love it, trust me!!

    Geoff's listenability is ridiculous! I never tire of his voice. A lot of people say listen to Blackbird or High and Dry, if you want to experience the most range-y covers (and I love those covers), but I think his voice is even better now than in those early days of his channel. I think Monster Mash and The Headless Horseman showcase some of his best high harmonies and would be a fun double feature for October. Hoist the Colors and Little Mermaid with VoicePlay have the best multiple octave slides. Oogie Boogie's final walk-down is, of course, a must. Can't wait to see where y'all end up next!

    Hey, of course I made it to the end. I stumbled upon VoicePlay almost two years ago when I came across a recommendation for their version of 'Eleanor Rigby' because I was exploring different arrangements for that song. And they just blew me away, even without Geoff going way down into the depths of his bass on that one. Never had any desire to join anyone's Patreon before, but I quickly became a member of VoicePlay's, Geoff's and PattyCake Productions' (run by VP beatboxer Layne Stein and former VP member Tony Wakim), and I have never regretted that for a second. I'll try to give a shout-out to you on this month's group chat with Geoff to see if he has heard or would like to consider your offer for an interview.

    When VoicePlay was doing the Super Mario Bros Peaches he hit Ab5 and in Enemy he hit a fairly quick A0 growl instead of his usual subharmonic. His B0s are extended for 14 seconds at the start and later ones are also extended. His full chest voice starts at F1. I have also heard that he is actually a big cat that curls up purring inside a cello! His version of Jack's Lament (Nightmare Before Christmas) is simply stunning. Love your diagram! Have you checked out Sound of Silence? In high school he wanted to be a high tenor, at Disney he did get to do some tenor work. All of VoicePlay members have worked at the Orlando theme parks. I have stayed. Geoff has chatted/interviewed with the Charismatic Voice and also Peter Barber.

      There is a lot of confusion among a lot of people who have seen Geoff using one technique but not the other at his lower chest voice. Because he does use subharmonics at G1 down sometimes... even though he has shown an F1 in full chest voice (normally an F#1 is his limit). Subharmonics are awesome for doing a quick octave drop within what is normally within chest range.

    Geoff has several videos explaining his techniques and exercises on his channel that you might find very interesting. He also did an interview with Elizabeth from Charismatic Voice where he demonstrates some of his subharmonic techniques to her. The crazy thing is as he has continued to sing low bass his chest voice range has expanded to where many of his previously exclusive subharmonic notes are now more chest voice/growls than true subharmonic technique. I think if he truly put his mind to it he could potentially reach into the negatives using a combination of all the techniques he has worked on over the last couple of decades.
    BTW: Geoff has blown subwoofers with his low notes during live performances.

    These are two of my favorites. Not only am I a Tolkien geek, but these are such beautiful pieces of music on their own. Add in his amazing range and tone and artistic interpretation and they’re winners.
    I really enjoyed the spider graph. I have zero musical training and I have a hard time interpreting into words what I’m hearing. now I have something to go back to when I’m trying to explain what I think I’m hearing. When I hear him sing I’m always reminded of the scene in Singing in the Rain. Kathleen Freeman, in her beautiful plummy British accent, is encouraging “round tones Miss Lamont round tones.” it’s such a rich full, and yes round, sound
    He is releasing his Halloween special this Saturday, October 7 (I’m late in viewing your reaction) and it is my favorite of the songs from Nightmare before Christmas. VoicePlay did four of those songs several years ago and I’m sure everybody will tell you to go check out Oogie boogie because that’s the first time he used a subharmonic in one of the videos. There’s an amazing multi octave slide at the very end.
    Speaking of the very end, we always tell everyone to watch the video until the Patreon roll starts because they frequently will add little Easter eggs just as you seem to do.
