What was your favorite moment from this cover?? IMO one of Geoff's best arrangements ever -- I never expected an acapella version of this piece to work so well! Brilliant work to Geoff and VP 👏
I’ve never heard the original but now I gotta look it up. The intense vioLayne section was really nice but I can’t decide whether the chord RIGHT before the violin came out is my favorite section, or Geoff’s solo a bit earlier. It was very nice and it’s incredible how he transitions between notes (the low G). Seamless
*splutters* Favorite moment?!? Like…one?! Ok dude, the one bit between the first and last notes? 😝😂 Seriously though…when Layne first drops that beat you know it’s about to get real. Then they build up and up and then there’s this light floaty moment where Cesar and Geoff try to con you into thinking things are calming back down(didn’t fool me. I’ve heard enough of Geoff’s arrangements to know he puts more than one sucker punch in if at all possible) and then they just explode. First time I heard it, I think I quit breathing when Layne dropped the beat. I know I got dizzy well before the violin and realized I needed to breathe again. This arrangement just HITS in all the right feels. I loved the original. but I’m not sure I’ll bother playing it again. It. ever grabbed me by the threat and shook me like VoicePlay just did. The original never put tears in my eyes. This one does.
My favorite section is from when they're all harmonizing "All these words I don't just say..." to the end of the Violayne part. Of course, if I have to pick just one moment, I'd go with the majority on the "YEAH! BOOM VioLAYNE!" Literal chills.
@@Snapdragonflie They just released a Violayne t-shirt. The front says “Violayne” with their logo replacing the o, and back says “a capella: It’s better with instruments”. I laughed out loud for real on that. And then I bought one.
Your expression when VioLayne happened was worth the whole reaction. This cover broke most of the reactors. I think Geoff did an epic arrangement for this one. I love how in the description of the video they even call him VioLayne! And it's always great to see J. None when he's on leave. He may not technically be an official member of Voiceplay at the moment, but you can tell he's still a member at heart. ✌️❤️🥕🎻
This is my new favorite thing and I have to admit to being a snob, lol. I am a metal head. Have been my entire life. I couldn't see how an acapella group could do metal and of all metal, Metallica?! Well, I was wrong! Oh my gosh is this amazing! My mouth hit the floor so many times in this it was crazy! Voiceplay just stole my heart!
A collab of you and The Charismatic Voice doing a vocal analysis would be insanely incredible on like a vocal analysis/ reaction to like Voiceplay, Pentatonix, or Home Free. Man, that be killer vocal analysis collaboration duo.
I smile when a reactor (and there are very very few) who acknowledge the use of "empty space". My horn mentor in conservatory liked to borrow from Debussy and remind me that "music is made in the space between notes."
I don't know how Geoff gets so close to a transcription *and yet* still makes the arrangement entirely its own. True artistry there. And yes, the runs were beautifully done - along with the playing with rhythm, texture and range
Someone told Chicago about VoicePlay's Nothing Else Matters. They checked it out, contacted VoicePlay and got them to come to Chicago and Friends concert Nov 17-18 in NJ to play some with Chicago and mostly by themselves. VoicePlay brought Omar since J None wasn't available. Chicago's trumpet player was sitting beside Geoff saying "How does he do that?"
Geoff had done a guitar solo for Layne that shows toward the end of Metalllica's piece. At the last minute Geoff wanted Layne to do it with the violin which I thought was just perfection. It colored all the high notes that J, Eli and Cesar were absolutely knocking out of the park. To me, VP really paid homage to the original while keeping their version intact. Just spectacular. I was happy that we finally got VioLayne 3 yrs after Warriors.
Maybe Geoff used to be a baritone, but as his voice has matured, he's definitely become a bass. And man, do I love Eli's rock belt. Also: VioLayne for the win!!
I agree. Voice Play did the Sing Off the year Home Free won it. The big emphasis was Tim being a crazy bass. Geoff has come a long way since then. If you go back to the old songs, you'll see how much more natural everything fits together now.
@@sjenny5891 I wasn't a fan of the Sing Off lineup for Voiceplay. It was more focused on the female singer (I think her name was Honey?) and it would have been nice to have Geoff highlighted like Home Free did.
@tyghe_bright I could be wrong, but I believe Geoff mentioned he was a Tenor before his balls dropped. I also believe Tim Foust was the same. That's why they have such crazy vocal ranges. They abject refused to just let the "tenor within" die just because their bodies decided otherwise. Then they discovered that working so hard to preserve as much of their higher registers as possible actually made them even better bass singers.
That is a perfect description . I don’t care for metal but I wanted to hear the original so listened to it and it’s an amazing song. I just am not crazy about the whole metal thing. But this captured the spirit of that song so beautifully.
Geoff's arrangements often bring me to tears, and this is one of them. So beautiful. And his bass lines impress me as much as his singing voice. I find it incredible, so clean and solid. I've been collecting names that he has been given by reactors which include BassMaster 3000, G1 Geoff, Mr Bass-alicious, and the living legend that is Geoff Castellucci. :)
Geoff Castellucci is a freaking genius! This arrangement of one of my favorite Metallica songs EVER...perfection! I can't stop watching this masterpiece. His bass lines were impeccable! Eli is just a vocal god, J-None, I've missed him singing with Voiceplay, he has an amazing voice with such a pure tone. Cesar is incredible, Layne, aka VioLayne, is a freaking legend. His beatboxing and sound effects are just perfection. When he whipped out his violin, my jaw dropped! It was insane!
TIL that Layne can play violin. Wow! This was a phenomenal cover. I thoroughly enjoyed your analysis - I've learned so much about music theory from your videos. thank you for sharing your insights.
I am so happy to see this. I couldn't wait to hear your take on it, especially since Charismatic Voice, Jennifer Glatzhofer and Mortius all completely geeked out over the technicalities of it. Just needed you to fill in on those arrangement and bass details. Plus, I really got the feeling you literally couldn't stop yourself from learning the song as they're singing it.
It was Eli on the highest note of the scream. He actually opted up of his own accord apparently, it wasn’t in the arrangement. And as I hoped, you did notice Geoff hitting the low end when Layne came in with the violin; no one else has mentioned or noticed because they’re too distracted 😂 it’s such a powerful moment though
This is so great! And you're right. Geoff is a bass who trained (and continues to train) to keep the high notes. I don't know any baritone who can hit those notes with the ease that he does.
I wonder if that was something he thought when he was running around the Sing Off hanging out with Avi and Tim until he really started hitting those lower chest notes. Also, he's said he's a very quiet singer. I wonder if he called himself a baritone because that was where he could start projecting.
@@MuriKakari, I believe it's because he didn't realize what his voice actually was... from so many years of wanting to be a rock tenor. I was the same way - in a way - until I first heard Geoff. I am a choral bass singer who always hung out above C2 (often above E2), despite having a chest voice that goes down to E1 and chest-fry to C#1. After I heard what these a cappella basses were doing, I decided to explore my own voice, and found it went MUCH lower AND higher than I ever thought possible.
@@johndeeregreen4592 That makes a lot of sense. So basically, he finally stopped claiming to be a baritone when he decided he actually wanted to be Thurl Ravenscroft instead of a Rock Tenor
In one of his Q&A videos, Geoff mentions he feels most comfortable in and around the C3-C4 range. But I think he was being modest, because like Peter said in this video, Geoff sounds super comfy down to E2 or D2 as well.
@@Stan_S_Stanman, it's not just that he doesn't sound strained but that his thickness is there, too. Plenty of baritones can hit E2 and bass-baritones can get down to normally a D2, but Geoff sounds thick and unstrained even at a C2 (the normal dividing line for a bass versus a bass-baritone).
I love this. Would’ve like Cesar to get a little more “solo” time, but he does so well melding with the other voices, it’s still brilliant to hear him. And I’m a little biased. Dang, I love these guys! Great reaction again, by the way!
Me too, but Cesar very much made his presence felt and helped set the tone for this one by virtue of his uncharacteristic stillness and solemnity. So much so that some of us were a little worried the first time we saw it that there might be something wrong--he's usually so bubbly and animated.
This is gonna sound weird but my favorite part of this song is at 17:41 of your video when Cesar sing "Find in you". I don't know why but the sound he makes here goes great with the other sounds being made at that time. As I said, a little weird but I can't help it.
Geoff may consider himself a lower register baritone but as a woman who loves an excellent bass voice he is obviously a basso profundo. There is no other vocal range that has that same smoky, velvety feel to it.
I think the blending of the soloists is sacrificial. Both soloists have to sacrifice in order for it to blend well. This group does this beautifully. The fact that the violin section brought tears to your eyes, is just a fact that it has broke yet another reactor. I appreciate your analysis.

This is honestly one of my favorite covers that voiceplay has ever done, the arrangement that Geoff did is just perfect. I have been repeatedly listening to this since it came out and will most likely continue to do that for a long time. This song pumps me up and motivates me for my day. I loved hearing your analysis on this, you always give me more insight into Geoff's bass and the arrangement as a whole. You point out things that I didn’t notice before. Thanks for the great reaction and analysis as always friend!!❤
Loved your reaction! Obviously, you are a skilled musical analyst, but you had some excellent points on the purpose of a cover (not to copy the original but to bring in one's own interpretation). My hat is off to you!
Yep, Geoff is awesome! And he rules too! Many reactors try to imitate him, and they sound like a joke (and not even a funny one). You're the only one who can pull that off! What an amazing job they all did! Thanks, Peter, for doing this! 😍
I've loved seeing this cover make the rounds with the wonderful reactors on YT. In 2021, Elton John called Nothing Else Matters one of the best songs ever written. It's so beautiful. I'm glad VoicePlay did this. Their version is stunning.
Geoff is awesome, and this arrangement is brilliant, but I have to say for myself that I was very excited to see Eli get a chance to shine with that Rock God tenor of his. This is the VoicePlay I love, when they can just sing and elevate a song and not over-use the extremes of their voices, which they have occasionally done in earlier arrangements. And I know I have seen a few people in comments have a “That’s not a cappella!” meltdown about the violin but they need to take a chill pill, all of the big a capella groups drop in an occasional instrument when it’s called for.
Geoff Rules!! 🤪 It’s always fun to hear you sliding around hitting all the notes. Layne really handles that violin like a boss right here. Great analysis, Peter!
hey peter i’ve started listening to bass gang recently and listening to your low notes and have started getting interested into bass and am now a bass singer with a lowest subharmonic of B0 and a lowest chest of G1. Thanks a lot peter, and btw you’re funny lol.
Your quick comment of "morning voice" at 6:56 warmed my heart! I do a lot of speaking for a living and several times when I have had an early showing, people have told me I hardly sound like myself, and I've always blamed it on Morning Voice!
Great analysis as usual, Peter. I was wanting to hear your thoughts as a bass singer on this one because I feel like Geoff is all over the place in this piece, but in the most amazing way possible. I think Geoff was likely a baritone at some point earlier in his life, he just totally didn't clock it when he shifted to a bass and has unwittingly been lying to himself for a long time now. 🤣
I enjoy watching your facial expressions while you're listening. It also alerts me that something amazing is happening! I agree - they nailed this great song! Loved it!
So cool to hear a rock song done acappella (plus a little VioLayne)! Truly a masterful arrangement and amazing performance. Definitely realized some new things about it from your analysis! Always love it when you return to our favorite acappella groups 👍🏻
The amount of musicianship on display in this piece is just astounding. The vocalization of the instrumental introduction was beautiful. And your analysis, sir, has won you another subscriber. VOICEPLAY (and of course, Geoff) RULES
I don't know jack about metal, but I certainly wasn't expecting something so melodic and nuanced. I've been listening to this cover a lot, but really appreciate your insights, Peter--you always add to my appreciation of anything you analyze. Maybe I'll tiptoe into metal; never too late to appreciate a new (to me) genre.
You'd be surprised how similar metal can be to classical music. Highly technical, very dramatic, complicated arrangements. Though not with a lot of the more mainstream metal. Look into bands like Nightwish, Epica, Ayreon(not actually a band more of a metal meets musical theater thing).
Geoff definitely rules, and with this one he created a masterpiece ❤️ I love how they bring in the violin, it's like they mixed the original and the one Metallica did with The San Francisco Symphony.
Yes!!! I've been waiting for your reaction to this one. And I totally agree that this arrangement is stellar! They crushed it. And VioLayne for the win!! ❤️ Thanks for this reaction!
Welp. You just got me as a Patreon. Why? Because when they dropped this, after my initial shock wore off, I realized I wanted nothing more than to hear your breakdown. You help me hear so much more than I would on my own. Also…thank you for declaring Geoff a bass. The first time I heard him try to claim baritone, I found myself yelling “bullsh*!!” at the video. And I’ve muttered it under my breath every time he’s said it since. Nice to hear someone better educated than I am come to the same conclusion. I appreciate that affirmation! 😊 And yeah, I got soggy the first dozen times I listened too. It’s just so damn pretty it almost hurts.
It's just perfect, right? I kneel down before Geoffs genius arrangement and everybodys talent. Thank you for your great reaction and analysis of this beautiful rendition, I appreciate it!
Was waiting for your reaction. As always, you point out so much. Not to mention your eyes at VioLayne! Just a side note - that has to be the most sedate I can recall seeing Cesar. But his singing always speaks for itself, with or without theatrics. It's also scary how Cesar and Eli can give a vioin a run for the money.
First, love the analysis! This is truly one of my favourite things VP has done to date. What a way to start off the year. Second, re the great "is Geoff a bass or baritone" debate: I know Geoff thinks of himself as a baritone because of where he starts being able to project notes (which at least used to be C#2, D2ish). How important is projection really when classifying a bass? He certainly sounds like one, just with the ease/clarity/weight with which he can hit those notes, but that's on mic. How much does off-mic volume matter?
Hey Peter, Hello from France, I knew you will fully appreciate this, and like everyone else, be moved. I finally decided after following you for months to support you on Patreon, because you deserve to be rewarded for your excellent work. 👍
Fabulous reaction and evaluation. Missed a couple of Geoffs lows behind the lead...but then he was very soft in sound.. I missed it too first few times. Peter, you are quickly becoming a favorite. P.S. LOVED the group work for Halloween vid with Lauren
I have been eagerly awaiting your reaction. 😁 So far this cover is batting nearly 1000. Every reactor has been ruined by it. I am sure your facial expressions will be epic.
Since I was more than just speechless hearing this masterpiece... except for whoooow and yeaaah 😅 I'm so glad all the vocal-expert-reactors can explain what exactly I'm hearing 😂 I only know what I feel 😁 And Peter is one of my favourites of course 😁 For me the 'burping-frog-effect' as it was called by Elisabeth from The Charasmatic Voice 🐸😂 felt so fitting since it was like a crack in the matrix or some (music)dimensions because this was not expected to ever happen 🤗😁
I have to admit, I didn’t like the original song anymore, because it was played everywhere and was kind of… meh (not the song, it’s still brilliant, but my feeling towards it) 😐 But what VP did here… Goosebumps 🤯🤩 Thanks for your analysis! I always love to get new information and access to songs from you 😊 And, yes, Geoff is awesome 😂🤩
I feel like we always say they have outdone themselves again. Much like people who write intricate novels I have so much admiration for the musical mind that comes up with arrangements like this with so much detail and intricacy. It truly is stunning. Appreciate your observations as always.
Voiceplay are always so exciting to listen to. Certain things they do have evolved into their signature so that I recognise it straight away as distinctly Voiceplay, yet they are never boring or predictable. Whenever they drop a new video I'm always then waiting to hear what you have to say Peter.... brilliant song, brilliant arrangement, brilliant analysis ❤
Thank you so much Peter for another priceless reaction/ analysis . You are one of the few that gives VioLayne the credit he deserves for all his beatboxing. I always enjoy watching you watching them. Please don't forget Geoff's new solo cover ( Till Then ). Soft , deep & slow yummy.
Peter, you and Mortius are my two go-to reactors....consistently. I learn from both of you so much about vocal music, it makes me wish I had not given up voice years and years ago. I realize now, because of both of you, I could have learned how to be as expressive as I longed to be, but there was no one to explain it to me. Still....you give me an open door to listen to your journey in vocal expressiveness. Love your growth and your music. Keep the music playing, Peter. TBG is going places, and your operatic voice is scary-good lately. Take care....
Thank you for your insights on this piece. I never heard the original because metal music did not appeal to me back in the day, but this cover is exceptional.

I always learn so much watching your reactions. You're never too old to learn something new!
Love you Peter ❤ You and Geoff are awsome you rule 😁
Geoff Rules!! 🤪
It’s always fun to hear you sliding around hitting all the notes.
Fun fact: Geoff did a F#1 chest in Arcane and in this one there's a little E1 slide chest from Geoff but we don't hear it well
There is no E1 chest in here but geoff also Hit a F1 at friends in the other side
@@turanbirligi6969 no there's a E1 but it's not really audible
@@turanbirligi6969 and yes he slide down to a F1
Great analysis as usual, Peter. I was wanting to hear your thoughts as a bass singer on this one because I feel like Geoff is all over the place in this piece, but in the most amazing way possible. I think Geoff was likely a baritone at some point earlier in his life, he just totally didn't clock it when he shifted to a bass and has unwittingly been lying to himself for a long time now. 🤣
The whole production is amazing, but I really love the soulfulness in JNone’s voice. Kudos to Geoff for a masterful arrangement.
I enjoy watching your facial expressions while you're listening. It also alerts me that something amazing is happening! I agree - they nailed this great song! Loved it!
Eli was incredible in this. And Geoff is always awesome.
Geoff is phenomenal 👏
And yeah, I got soggy the first dozen times I listened too.
My favorite part is the flying violin 🎻. Layne rocked that section, and your expression was epic. Loved your analysis. Hugs from Florida 🌞🌈
Hey Peter, Hello from France, I knew you will fully appreciate this, and like everyone else, be moved. I finally decided after following you for months to support you on Patreon, because you deserve to be rewarded for your excellent work. 👍
Excellent reaction. Thank you 🤟🏼🔥
Yes, finally. I've been waiting eagerly for your analysis ever since the song was released, already at Patreon stage.
Since I was more than just speechless hearing this masterpiece... except for whoooow and yeaaah 😅 I'm so glad all the vocal-expert-reactors can explain what exactly I'm hearing 😂 I only know what I feel 😁
And Peter is one of my favourites of course 😁
For me the 'burping-frog-effect' as it was called by Elisabeth from The Charasmatic Voice 🐸😂
felt so fitting since it was like a crack in the matrix or some (music)dimensions because this was not expected to ever happen 🤗😁
I can not listen to this enough!!! It is the best thing I have ever heard them do! ❤️
I have to admit, I didn’t like the original song anymore, because it was played everywhere and was kind of… meh (not the song, it’s still brilliant, but my feeling towards it) 😐
But what VP did here… Goosebumps 🤯🤩
Thanks for your analysis! I always love to get new information and access to songs from you 😊
And, yes, Geoff is awesome 😂🤩
You seemed to get a great deal of joy out of this reaction and analysis. Superb.
That one low note during the violin solo was Geoff with a hair of distortion to make it sound dubstep sounding.
I do enjoy Voiceplay more when you do the reaction videos. You explain the complexities and music theories that I am not trained enough to hear
Geoff is awesome - and so are you!
Thank you for the gift of your talent, too!
Great reaction, thank you! You're in good company--listeners and reactors alike have been routinely left in shock or in tears since this one dropped.
Thanks for all the info you give and pointing parts out. I loved your facial expressions when VioLane came in
Thank you so much Peter for another priceless reaction/ analysis . You are one of the few that gives VioLayne the credit he deserves for all his beatboxing. I always enjoy watching you watching them. Please don't forget Geoff's new solo cover ( Till Then ). Soft , deep & slow yummy.
One of your best reactions ever for one of VP's best performances!
You and Voiceplay! Perfect combo! I really get into the piece as you analyze it. And...both of you get better and better!
Certified banger .
I thought when you sang with j.none, it blended perfectly.. thanks for the great reaction..
Thank you for your insights on this piece. I never heard the original because metal music did not appeal to me back in the day, but this cover is exceptional.
This is my favorite of theirs.
Voiceplay never disappoints!!!
Great reaction Peter! I love all of your analysis!
Have been waiting for you to this analysis. Absolutely amazing!
Geoff's a master at arrangements, and this is his best yet! (Note... I said "yet"!)
Great analysis as always, this is a phenomenal cover. They really did the original justice (and I’m a HUGE Metallica fan)
Thanks Peter. Not only does Geoff rule but so do you.
