This video is for you if your voice hurts after talking, if your voice hurts from talking too much, or if your voice hurts after teaching. Do you have Muscle Tension Dysphonia or other functional voice problems and you are asking: “Why does my voice hurt when I talk?” There is no short answer for this but in this video I share three truths about pain and reasons why your throat feels strained when talking or your voice hurts when speaking. It is one of the most common complaints of people who experience tension or strain in their voice and their brain interprets these sensations as pain. I often hear my clients say: “My throat hurts when I talk too much or my voice hurts when I talk for 5 minutes.” It does not matter how much you can talk without pain. You can change how you perceive vocal pain. Watch this video to get started.

This has been my problem for many years now. I don't know what happened or how it happened. It's like I suddenly forgot how to use my voice like a normal person.
Many people I know can talk non stop for several hours without feeling any discomfort while I immediately feel some even just after a few minutes of talking.
When I was young, I remember having no problems like this. I always participated in class, read sections of books out loud. The whole room would listen because of how clear and resonant my voice was, without me putting much effort into it at all. It just all came naturally.
But now, i often get swollen throat from talking even after just a little while. When I'm in loud places, I can barely hear my own voice even though I'm trying so hard to talk louder. I thought something changed in my vocal cords significantly but sometimes I try to speak differently and it feels much easier on the throat..
After some observation, I came to the conclusion that I may just be using my voice incorrectly. I think my vocal placement is wrong which is also why I struggle to have enough resonance when speaking.
It's like I kinda know what's wrong but I don't know how to make myself do it correctly. It's like I need to say words completely consciously just so I can place my voice where it should be. Because if I don't think at all and just speak carelessly, I immediately go back to the wrong and painful way.
It's like i need to learn how to speak again .. from the beginning..

Thank you for these videos, Katarina. I've been suffering for two years from the very same problem you talked about: my voice hurts when I talk but the my vocal cords are fine according to the ENT doctor.
I've known I need vocal theory since the pain started. Unfortunately this field is quite undeveloped in my country. The "experts" I've talked to always claim I'm totally fine since my voice sounds clear and normal, but I know I'm not making the pain up. This pain prevents me from talking to my friends and teaching, two of the things I love.
But after watching your video I know there's hope. I know my problem started because I've been quite insecure with my voice for a long time. The fact that sometimes I feel alone and I feel like the "voice professional" people here don't help me has negatively impacted my emotions, and therefore, my voice.
Thank you for such an amazing video. I'll watch it again and again :)

I've had vocal pain issues for years, but it's gotten a lot better for me in the past months
For anyone wondering, I convinced myself I had no pain.
I also tried to speak less from the throat (trying to get a deeper voice), and allowed myself to direct more air towards the nose, which is less abrasive on vocal cords, in my experience
Stop caring if you have voice inflections, it just makes your voice more engaging most of the time
Also practice speaking softly in a way that doesnt not generate any pain. The feeling should be light. Over time, you will be able to produce more volume.
Also, make sure you get air in your lungs before speaking. Make sure to practice not "letting go" of all the air in your lungs. You can't really speak with air
Practice filling your lungs up and holding the air in when you're not speaking (mouthbreathers, make sure you're focusing on this point.). If you let the air flow out of your lungs constantly, you'll always be out of breath

I have had pain in my throat from voice use for about a year. It increases the more I use my voice. I got looked at yday by an ENT. He said there’s no problem and it’s probably stomach acid. Which makes no sense since I have acute pain on one side and it was an event that caused it (a time of very intense use of voice which I had been doing regularly for a year or two). I’m very deflated right now because I HIGHLY, HIGHLY doubt it is stomach acid.

⚠️ Most times the problem is not in the brain. When I talk loud, my right ear vibrates, and I can even feel dizzy. The problem is on the ear, or the eustachian tube. The voice sound vibrates your head and perhaps there's a rare and unwanted communication between the head and inner ears bones. I have tried everything with no luck. The only way to relieve is to lean the body down. It's a nightmare ! 😮

I would say that your circumstances can be adding to your pain. Pain is usually multifactorial, like the perfect storm, many things coming together at the same time. But the situation you are describing is definitely something that will increase your perception of pain. Here is a resource where I explain how pain works and how to start dealing with it: www.vocalfreedomsystem.com/pain The good news is that understanding how pain is perceived in our bodies can help us overcome vocal pain.

I am so very sorry to hear about your voice troubles. I completely understand how pain when speaking can make your life miserable. Chronic vocal pain is a very complex phenomenon and a big part of the problem are the neuropathways for pain perception that developed over time. The exercises hurt because making sound hurts immediately. How can i get rid of this problem? Its purely a functional disorder (muscles overuse and wrong use of muscles) but it seems no one can help me and nothing helps. How can i get rid of this problem?
