    28:35 Conclusion
    Hi everyone! In this video we are finally covering some basic glottal behavior. In this video we discuss something commonly referred to as "mixed" voice but under the framework of "thick" and "thin". This is controlled primarily by vocal fold mass and it has significant effects for gender implication.
    This video covers basic information, ear training, how to use, 8 exercises to find thinness, and extra theory information. This video is based on the free document provided in the description.
    8 Basic Approaches for Thickness Reduction:
    1. Pitch Slides for Thinness
    2. Thick - Thin Pop Test
    3. Pure Mimicry
    4. Physical Compression of the Head and Neck
    5. Onset and Offset Based Approaches
    6. Behavioral Triggers
    7. SOVTe for Thinness
    8. Voiceless Thick & Thin
    The exercises provided are different approaches to try and help student's discover and find their "thinner" voice quality. Work to isolate the "thick" and "thin" sound quality. Once you manage to find thinness, count to ten, read a paragraph, or speak out loud to yourself to try an apply the thinness to speech.
    While vocal fold mass is rooted in physiology from hormones and genetics, users can take control of the voice and behaviorally manipulate the vocal fold mass across a great spectrum of options. Gaining control over vocal fold mass is a critical control for vocal freedom. Those who gain expertise in the realm of thickening and thinning, thereby gain the ability to fluidly manipulate a fundamental sexually dimorphic element of voice.
    warmly,

    My boyfriend just told me when we first met I sounded like a boy. I’ve been getting told I sound like a boy for years by many people. I’ve tried to change my voice for years and nothing works. What he said pushed me to a limit. He said, “I had to convince myself I was talking to a girl not a dude when we first met” . Sorry, but I don't see how that should make you cry. Everyone is unique, and you don`t need to be ashamed of something you were born with/is genetic. Unless there is earlier trauma you were mostly over (like school bullying), in which case you are incredibly strong. You are strong even if you didn't have trauma, becauseyou work to do what you view as bettering yourself (training your voice), even if you don't need to in order to fit in.

      Speaking as someone who has been heavily involved in opera, these terms are for laymen that are learning to sing. These terms aren't and weren't intended to describe how to change how your voice sounds. Essentially they mean where in your body you feel when you sing. It's an easy way to teach beginners how to control their pitch. Changing how your voice sounds is NOT a pitch thing entirely and there are a lot of different factors that go into it (like the focus of the video, how our physiology is)

      Don’t forget that some of the most amazing and seductive actresses have deep voices; it’s not the tone as much as the style that’s important. Think about Kathleen Turner; her voice isn’t exactly girly but she was incredibly sexy.

    Very very interesting. My friends tell me that when I sing certain songs, my voice sounds feminine. When I listen closely, I can tell what they mean, but I never could explain what the mechanics are behind it. Whenever there are songs with a high pitch - I tend to “thin” my voice right before it flips into falsetto. This video completely explains it. Thank you!!

    I am feeling super chuffed with myself right now ^-^. Turns out I've already been doing this without even knowing! A couple months ago I noticed a change in the quality of my voice when I was singing along to a favorite female singer. It took a while to get to grips with what I was doing but after a while I was able to repeat it and even swap back and forth. Super cool to know whats actually happening and now I know where to look I can actually feel the muscles in my throat shifting as I change that aspect of my voice.
    I would have never gotten to this point without Z's earlier videos encouraging me to listen to the sound of my voice and showing me that I can consciously control my throat to change the sound it produces. Love you girl

    As someone studying music, this is incredably useful. I assumed that once you have pitch and resonance, there are no more factors, but ofcourse the thickness will matter! I mean any guitarist would know that different thickness strings produce different timbres.
    I guess I was worried that if it was the actual vocal folds that were determinors there'd be nothing to do, but thank goodness for the perpetually amazing human body (even if I don't get along with mine a lot of the time) and thank goodness for this amazing woman who is willing to teach all us transfeminine people how to sound like ourselves ❤️🎶🌈

    So, I've never commented on a RUclips video before. Like ever. But I came across this and it's got me all emotional for the wonderfully detailed, heartfelt, and scientific explanations you give in your series. Thank you so much for this. Voice dysphoria has always been huge for me. I've been unknowingly doing a number of the techniques you suggest, but without understanding what I was doing I felt like I hit a wall years ago. I recently landed a small voice acting role (which is crazy because it's so out of my wheelhouse and I auditioned on a lark) and all of the self-attention on my voice was really making me feel crappy. • @lobjornsdotter422
    @lobjornsdotter422 3 года назад +9

    Thank you very much for this! It makes a lot of sense and helps a lot in understanding what's actually going on when we produce and shape our voices. I'm working a lot on my voice right now and all this comes so naturally to me - then I realized that I've done all this work before, just not with my voice but with my approach to playing brass instruments as a kid and later when teaching the same skills to brass studens.
    When learning to play a brass instruments you have many tools, and the easiest way to get a powerful sound is to be very active in your creation of the sound through increasing the vibrations of your lips by applying more force, this creates a rougher sound though and learning to get the same effect while keeping your lips relaxed allows you to play "softer" without losing power, you need to create the relaxed vibrations through better managing and shaping your air flow instead (before it ener reaches the lips in the first place). I've never thought about it before, but I can actually hear the latter as a more feminine sound quality - and you are basically trying to achieve a thinner voice through the instrument.
    Here is an example of what I mean, if you're interested!
    "Thick": open.spotify.com/track/49QgRGZp9wEVzov0KDQcp1?si=DJ6HUtTWSIqIYbF80vyLhA

Turns out I was struggling so hard in part because of my setup, I'm bending my neck way downwards to see the screen, and slouch/hunch when practicing. I'm trying to figure out how to deepen my voice, I didn't realize that I had full control of false vocal folds and vocal folds already figured out. Having a better understanding of this, from this video helped a lot. Thank you.

    I don't consider myself to be trans but I do enjoy presenting feminine. These lessons from the trans community are greatly appreciated.

    Hey Z! This is some really incredible information for voice training. I love how your videos get into the physiological / science behind the sounds our voices make. I was looking for ways to adjust my voice for voice acting different characters in role-playing games, and that's how I stumbled upon your videos, and I'm totally blown away by the possibility of this! In your timeline video you said it was difficult for you to try to speak with your original voice. My question is, how would it work for someone who isn't looking for a permanent change but rather to be able to switch between voices? (such as in the case of voice acting) I would imagine less intense practice, but that would probably also mean not achieving high-quality change, right? Because it took you about 4-5 years to get to where your voice is now. Thanks for the videos and tips, and keep up the amazing work. Your FFS turned out great too, btw. Congrats!

    The ear training section alone helped me so much. I could always do a girl's voice but I had trouble finding it and maintaining it. Thank you so much!!

    This reminds me of another voice training video talking about making it a lil breathy but love how u have it to science breaking it all down and how each tiny detail works.

      Thanks for your comment! We definitely don't want to be breathy -- just thin. Thin and breathy are very different. Breathiness is achieved by not properly closing the vocal folds so the airflow leaks out. Thinness and thickness is achieved by stiffening or loosening the folds -- essentially allowing for more or less mass to vibrate which sounds more masculine or more feminine. :)
