    I was bordeline suicidal for 2 years because of false vocal cord constriction which was shutting down my voice, and ultimately me in the process. Watched 100s of videos on MTD and everything but to no luck.

      @@TransVoiceLessons What are your thoughts regarding inhaled vocalization? It's often used to imitate pig squeals/dinosaur noises (heavy constriction, relatively high pitch, and incredibly deep resonance, inhaled). I'm well aware that extreme volume/duration (i.e. performance) can cause some serious damage, but is there any risk if done in relative moderation?

  • @vivianangel5873
    @vivianangel5873 4 года назад +49

    This helps with singing range in my experience as well. Retracting your false folds as you approach a high note can help you hit it in tune without straining. I'd also say that retracting the false folds is one of the most useful ways you can sound more feminine as you sing, although it's challenging to avoid abducting the true vocal folds at the same time, which makes one sound breathy, especially in the lower register. Great stuff as always, Z!

    • @TransVoiceLessons
      @TransVoiceLessons  4 года назад +10

      Absolutely! Retraction of the false folds really helps so much -- increased range, increased sustain, lighter quality, etc. It's true that it can be difficult for some to find adequate true fold engagement while heavily retracted. It's a fun balancing act! Thanks for your post! :D

    The more I watch this and practice… the more I realize how much I’ve been muffling and choking off my speaking and singing voice.
    I’ve never felt so much ease and relaxation and clarity before.

    Just to share: I lost my voice to a whisper 5 years ago (at age 54) to really bad laryngitis. My complete voicelessness lasted for 1 week, but I knew something was not right with my voice when I could talk again. I could not get back to singing normally. After a whole year, I could horribly sing at the lower register (I could not sing at the higher register (F4 and above). After yet another year, I could strain but reach notes up to F4. I pretty much lost my joy and desire to sing. I tried "everything" from seeing 3 otolaryngologists (all of them said that my vocal folds were fine), speech therapy, to throat massage, to pills and potions... but my voice still wasn't the same. My last ditch effort was to try voice lessons from a classically trained voice teacher (an hour every week for 12 weeks), although I sing pop/rock. My vocal folds slowly started getting stronger again with some stamina. But I always tried to tell everyone that I "feel" like there's something above my vocal folds that flap around and kill my tone, but no one addressed it. I browsed a LOT of video clips about voice problems until last week, I ran into someone talking about false vocal folds, which are "above" the vocal folds! I explored the videos and tried to patch in ideas as I saw them. Then watching your video, I was so impressed! You had the most complete and organized information I had ever seen about this topic. I so very much thank you for posting it. I will follow your tips and hopefully, I can get back my range somehow... from B2 to A5 (chest to mixed voice). Wish me luck! And more power to you! God bless...

    “Smiling with the throat” was particular helpful Z, I have been speaking over an intercom quite a bit lately and have been noticing the kinesthetic relationship between open throated sounds and close throated sounds. Having to yell is a particular challenge, and the grunting sounds that come out while catching a barbell are a firm reminder: I have to practice loosing my face during that catch anyway, so why not just keep it loose all day?

    I've really struggled with that grunting/constricted sensation when phonating in general (studied opera in college) and it only got worse when I started transitioning. I had one classical voice teacher that did wonders for relaxing my sound as a classical tenor, but I know now that it was only half the battle.
    With your videos, my own expertise as a voice teacher, and the incredible ear of my partner who is also a voice teacher, I'm stepping into what feels like uncharted territory of my voice on a weekly basis! It's really taking a whole village and I'm here for it.
    Thank you for your scientific and positive psychology based approach to voice. You're improving my quality of life immensely by making this information so accessible and giving me tools to be a better teacher at the same time.
    You're amazing, Z💜

    I have just found your clips and have followed your them from the oldest to the newest. As always the clips are concise, informative, and your presentation is professional. Your voice is pleasant and encouraging. I see that there are a few dislikes on most of the clips. Apparently the dislikes refer to the subject matter, because the presentation is always impeccable. The subject is one that definitely needs to be addressed by someone with personal experience. I have watched others try to teach the same things. While the material is factually correct, their methodology is usually far less precise than yours. I especially like the use of the clips with the Friture, the Isotope Ozone 5, or the Speech Tracker as you talk. It demonstrates perfectly what you are teaching. Keep up the good work, and thank you.

Now I have technical terminology and biomechanics to help me, and a whole bunch of exercises to help with refinement. For context, I'm a 6'2/250lbs cis male, so my normal voice is naturally loud, bassy and chest-resonant, but this breakdown playlist has very quickly made me more confident in a feminized vocalization.

Of course it’s useful to have more obvious examples at first, but I feel having more subtle examples of the constriction, specifically constriction associated with attempts at raising R1, would be super useful as well. Thank you very much for this! Understanding the anatomy and how this stuff actually works helped me tremendously, not only for voice, but even for my flute playing! This has removed a major block that I had. I knew I was too tense but didn't really understand what that meant or how to resolve it, what exactly it was that I needed to relax. 'Twas mine false folds! Thankies verily!

    So, I sing rock vocals, and my whole thing relies on using the false folds heavily and often, but I realized when trying to hit a clean high note, that I couldn't do it without the grit and rasp. It's good some times for effect, but not all the time. You're the only person who has made a "how NOT to use false folds video". Thank you.

    I have been watching your videos for a while now and tried to implement things as much as I could. But before this video nothing seemed to work or feel right. When watching this video, something finally clicked and I can now maintain a female voice! I don't love the voice right now but it might actually be a passing voice! I still need to do some more practice but this feels like a huge accomplishment! Which is great since the video I watched before this was the 7 secrets for achieving voice goals and such and those small accomplishments are progress! Thanks so much for all you do!!!

    ive been practicing for about a month now. grinding whenever i’m in the car and i was never really able to marry my raised pitch with a reduced weight while raising my larynx. my voice just still sounded way too gritty probably due to the false fold constriction. that silent laugh trick was a major plateau buster for me. im having a breakdown in the sprouts parking lot. thank you.

    Omg! This is what my problem is. I was feeling strained quickly and this sort of annoying croakyness to my voice. But some times I got this smooth voice and I could not nail down what I was doing right and why it so quickly snapped back into strain mode. Like a smile in your throat... Being aware of this will not fix it over night. But now I know what to hear and feel for. Practice, practice, practice. It is fun though, when there are results.
    Thanks! You are hands down the most impressive voice coach I have ever seen. You are one clever multi talented chick!

    Hahahahaha I love you so muuuuuuuch. Everything in these videos is just amazing, your delivery, your presence, your voice, your modulation, your explanation, the visual aids, the text, the little musical interludes/piano bits for the titles, just everything. I'm just a confused dude who likes to crossdress in private sometimes and I'm merely curious about voice at the moment, but if I lived alone or didn't expect any questioning I'd try the exercises out, because they do look fun to do, plus the thing being taught is also very interesting.

    My range runs from A1 (chest) to G5-ish (falsetto.) Constriction for me personally has been my biggest obstacle.
    It makes my voice sound ridiculously raspy, strained and is even blocking me from hitting certain notes I'd like to rest on (somewhere around the A3 to G4 range.)
    This vid has been super helpful in determining exactly what this obstacle feels like, though it's definitely going to take some time and repetitive practice to fully get over this hurdle. Thank you for these amazing tutorials

      @@TransVoiceLessons this might be a dumb question but I’m interested in your tutorials as more of an “change voice on call for effect” as I wrote. Are these changes permanent to a higher pitch if followed religiously? I just want to learn how to make more voices like for voice over work
