    I actually clicked on this assuming it was for voice acting, not sure why I had that assumption. But it never occurred to me that Trans people would have to work on their voices in addition to all the other changes to make them more themselves. A bit of an eye opening moment.

      @@TransVoiceLessons For what reason is it a "challenge"? The trans community seems to have this contradiction of saying gender is a spectrum and then also saying "THIS is what means to be male, so I am male" and "THIS is what it means to be female, so I am female" -- why go through the trouble of conforming to stereotypes?

    • @TransVoiceLessons
      @TransVoiceLessons  3 года назад +1081

      @@blossom357 it's not about conforming. It's about having a sound you personally want. The challenge has been longstanding due to the lack of clear and effective community resources for anyone to change their voice to whatever they want.
      In my personal case, I did not put in all the effort I have to get where I am today to *appease* cis people. I did it because it's what *I* wanted. I have liberated my voice and can sound however I want now. I'm not telling anyone "this is what it means to be male" "this is what it means to be female". In fact I constantly preach in my community that there is no such thing as a male or female voice. Hormones influence the physiology a bit and socialization pressures us into certain behaviors. Male and female voice is an acoustic illusion, not some essentialist quality.

Just as impactful as HRT, and I’m pretty sure you’d accept free HRT, even it took a couple minutes of your day. Don’t put this off until next month. Don’t put this off until next week. It didn’t work out for me, I started in the summer.... I trained for three weeks, and was disappointed....
    but I'll probably try again.
    I’ll leave my story here... I just, in fact, have no one to share it with...
    A year ago, at 22, I asked my best friend and girlfriend to address me in the feminine form. I was so happy that they accepted it....
    The nice part is that in the Russian language almost all verbs and pronouns have endings that determine gender.
    The downside is that I'm in Russia....
    and literally three days ago, as I am writing this comment, all LGBT people in Russia were legally and OFFICIALLY equated with EXTREMISTS.
    I thought that nothing made me so depressed after the start of the war....and here it is.

      I’m so sorry you are in that situation. There is currently a fascist (yes, fascist) wave over the entire world, that among other things prosecute the lgbt community.. It’s horrible.
      Can you leave Russia in the future sometime? Do you know other lgbt-people who can help you, or you can ever organize with safely?
      There are a lot of people fighting to stop theocratic fascists in both russia, europe and america from suppressing truth and compassion. Academics and activists are doing what they can. Lets hope and work for a brighter future!

      As someone who used to speak in French I would never consider the adjectives to determine gender a good thing... It hurts being called masculine when the word itself really should not need a gender. Dutch has that problem too which can suck but to a lesser extend. It just causes dysphoria. I'm glad English does not have that problem for the most part.

      But as Sun said, your voice is fine by itself, your voice as it is now is alright and good enough, it's great! If it gives you any solace to hear another person's opinions on voices, I actually really really love more masculine/darker and deeper girl's voices. There was a VA who would do a particularly low and deep sounding voice that almost sounded like a dude and every time I swear Id crush harder on that person.
      My point is, you're enough as you are, but if you want to change yourself and you believe it will make you happier, definitely go for it!

In my younger years it was Weight & depth and pitch going to the lower registers to sound more adult male than a teenaged girl. After I accomplished my goal I had great power and Range. But now after speaking and singing more masculine for over 40 years I’ve transitioned and now I’m reversing the process And your video’s have helped me immensely. When I started talking about voice feminization on the internet, the entire field was in a dismal state. Essentially nobody actually understood what resonance was or how it works. This channel was initially created to educate educators. However, over time the audience that has grown has been beginners seeking instruction rather than geeking out on cool stuff. This video is very much the beginning of a consistent bottom up series which will have a clear through line to help people directly. :)

    Outside the vocal practice, I really loved the part where you said "A mistake is a mistake because you don't know you're doing it, but it's a learning opportunity when you're aware you're making it", it's just such a good outlook to have in general! Also thank you so much! I was looking so hard for resources when RUclips *finally* showed this to me in my recommendations. I've recently discovered I'm non-binary, and I just want to have the sheer power of being able to switch between masculine and feminine voices. It's been kind hard for me because as a kid I was bullied for speaking in a very feminine way, so I really trained it so hard out of me, it feels so weird for me to be doing this again.

    for ppl trying to achieve an androgynous/masculine voice, would you reccomend these exercises but opposite?

    • @TransVoiceLessons
      @TransVoiceLessons  3 года назад +465

      Yes actually. For masculinity, increasing weight and lowering pitch is extremely key. Keep it comfortable and work it heavier without discomfort! For androgyny, whatever direction is the opposite of where you started would be great to work towards at first. Then work to cover less distance in that direction to find more a androgynous foundation. I really want to make a more detailed and nuanced video on androgyny soon. It's one of my favorite topics and has a lot of amazing options. It's so endless!!

    Something that I don't hear people often talk about, and something that I personally use, is singing along with various female artists. Being able to copy and mimic the small things about different women's voices will help understand the small subtle differences. Also, for me, when it comes to singing, it's second nature. Really helps get rid of your old voice and be able to mold and construct a new one.

    I just spent the last week doing vocal exercises for singing, that bridges the upper and lower resonances, and suggest that for everyone that hasn't found the voice they want, as it's part of the foundation to build on to get there. After doing the exercises for a few days, make affirming "mmhmm" sounds, and intently listening "uh-huh" sounds, both with a higher second syllable. While doing this, let yourself fall into a laugh, and then fall into speaking. Once you do this, you'll find your vocal ready position for speaking, but keep up the exercises, as they are keeping the foundation that you're relying on in place.
