Thank you for an informative video! I love the fact that there was no extra information, just the precise instructions and tips on how to do a good job!
Not referring to a stripped bolt, rather the method provided to swing the tensioner out of the way- it is a Torx ~50? but material is too soft. and cast, so not precise. The actual tensioner casting deforms easily, which will allow it to snap back while you are holding it out of the way, against spring tension, When this happens, it can easily break the stop for the spring, rendering the tensioner useless.
Not so easy if the (inner, alternator) tensioner has failed, which is very common, because the alternator tensioner is a poorly, nearly designed part. A t-50 torx socket, in aluminum alloy casting to hold a 40 pound spring, shows lack of conscious thought in the design. Because of this, it is quite common to have the torx bit deflect under tension, and slip out of the hole, at which point the tensioner snaps back, breaking the internal stop, which also retains the spring. When this happens (not if) you will have to remove at least the bottom 2 alternator bolts and loosen the top alternator bolt, and swing the alternator forward to extract the tensioner. and locate another tensioner. Warranty the other one based on a fatal design flaw. There is a way to save this design, though. Simply drill and tap a 10x1.5 LH thread hole where the torx socket hole is, and thread a short 10x1.5 LH thread bolt into it and tighten, using high strength (red) threadlocker. Once the threadlocker has hardened, you can use a regular socket (of whatever head size bolt you installed) to rotate the tensioner out of the way, and install or remove the belt. Just a note, we refer to bolt sizes by their thread diameter, and specify head diameter separately. (i.e. "10mm bolt with a 13mm head")
Thanks massively for this video, I own a Ford Focus ST225 over here in the UK and they have the Volvo T5 engine and my tensioners are on the way out so I've bought the parts but everyone was saying this would be a pain in the arse of a job but it looks straight forward and thanks to your video I know exactly how to do it now. Thanks again!
Happy I could help and thank you for the feedback :) I have plenty more tutorials on this car as well, even have an in-depth video for the axle replacement. I was looking into an ST axle, but by the time shipping was factored in from Europe, it wasn't any cheaper sadly.
This video is very detail, clean verbal guidence. I have a 2005 v50 T5, that I picked up for $1000. Some reason I lost the a/c & alternator ... I realizd the belt is MIA, and I was confused if this was a multi serpentine belt system. This video really really helps alot.
Excellent video. About to tackle my daughter's '07 C70 before she heads off to college. I'll be replacing the timing belt and this accessory belt vid will save me a lot of time. Do you have one for the T-Belt?
Thank you! Unfortunately I do not, but I do have a bunch of other repair videos for this car such as cabin filter replacement, engine air filter replacement, axle replacement, brake fluid flush and CEM cleaning.
4DIYers Great. I've changed the T belt in my Volvo 855t twice so I'm familiar with the process. Just haven't dealt with the vvt pulleys on the camshafts in the C70. Local shop gets $1,000 for the job. $300 in parts and I'll pocket the rest.
As far as I know there isn't any specific procedure. To be safe, I would line up the timing marks before removing the belt and as an added safety, make your own marks with a paint marker. You might also be able to find a procedure on another Volvo, the C30, C70, V50, and S40 is all part of the P1 platform so repair procedures are the same or similar.
Another question. If I ordered the alternator tensioner and it doesn’t fit. Is there another option because every part stores says it fits in Volvo s40 2007 2.4i?
I still have lower tensioner rattle on a cold start despite CHANGING EVERYTHING - ask what I havent changed! I'm starting to think that my A/C compressor pulley is misaligned, but it made the noise before I changed it and therefore after...
hello good explanation! know you don't have the c30 anymore. but have a question if that white sticker is no longer present, how do you know which tensioner and belt you need
Thank you! If the sticker is gone, you should be able to call the dealer, give them your vin, have them look up the part and ask them for the part number. They should be able to look up the engine code too.
Looks like this is on my list of things to do as I have chirping which is likely a slightly slip on one of the belts. I plan to replace both belts and tensioners as the vehicle is 15 years old. Are the two tensioners that you removed the same part number as I can only find one list on the suppliers website?
Thank you for this video! I'm replacing my tensioners today myself. I'll save good amount of money, and I see it only takes 10-15 minutes of work. Great video, man!
Thank you sooooo much!! I didn't have money to pay for a tow truck and pay for it to be diagnosed.. Will you help me so much You don't even understand. ❤
Thank you! If I remember correctly, the recommended maintenance interval is during the timing belt replacement. But I would advise checking the bearing in the pulleys for any play or noise.
i've unfortunately encountered I have the double pin tensioner; a real pain to get back in place even with my experience. i've had it out of place to replace my alternator. now it's finally back in it's spot. for everybody that needs to replace the double pinned tensioner, i'd recommend to unscrew the lower 2 bolts of the alternator, and loosen the top one. also unscrew the airhose to the airmass meter. hang up the alternator with a cabletie or something to make room for the tensioner to get back in place.
does this apply to s60 and canti pull wheel or is it easier to remove all oh can you confirm T50 because other videos say T60?? And how do I know if I have right tension??
so one belt goes from alternator to a/c and one from crank to a/c right? what is the name of the crank-a/c belt? it snapped yesterday. do i have to change the tensioner if it was changed last year with the alternator?
Thank you for making this video! I loved it. It was very helpful for my 2006 Volvo s40. I keep hearing a chirping sound and was thinking it was the tensioner but now I’m wondering if it’s a pulley gone bad.
Unfortunately I won't be doing any work on the clutch assembly anytime soon. However I did find this, so hopefully it helps www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Volvo-C30/129-TRANS-Clutch_Master_and_Slave_Cylinder_Replacement/129-TRANS-Clutch_Master_and_Slave_Cylinder_Replacement.htm
The bracket part would be the tensioner, so that has a spring assembly and they can fail over time too. It's usually best to change the whole thing. Not all companies allow for just the pulley to be replaced, it's cheap insurance to replace the whole thing and if you're paying a shop and the tensioner portion fails, you don't have to pay twice for basically the same job.
Unfortunately I can't be much help as we didn't have the diesel version available in Canada. However most serpentine belt replacements are somewhat similar. Just be sure to take some photos along the way to reference back for reassembly.
Thank you for an informative video! I love the fact that there was no extra information, just the precise instructions and tips on how to do a good job!
Thank you so much for the feedback, always happy to help :)

Trying to do this now. If I don’t have stripped bolt, does that mean I don’t have to remove the outer tensioner?
What's the Torque Value on Tensioner 🔩 Screws *(?)
Another great video. I've watched quite a few of your videos and love how helpful they are. Thanks for the great videos and keep it up!
Thank you, I really appreciate the kind words. This Friday I'll be releasing an axle replacement for this car as well.
Man, you're really giving RoberyDIY a run for his money!! :)
I wish every how-to was just like this!
Thank you so much!
showed me how to put my new belt on correctly. fire !

What's the part number for the belts ? Are they the same length ?

Are the two tensioners that you removed the same part number as I can only find one list on the suppliers website?
Excellent.. I've been a Volvo fan for a while.. mostly 850 and V70s till 2004. I'd never seen a diy c30 video. Quite informative and detailed
Thank you! I used to have an 850 actually, I did produce some videos on that car. I will be producing more C30 diy videos in the future too :)
Hi! Great DIY video. Wondering if the two belts are the same or they have different part numbers?
Man I can’t wait to do all this work to my c30 this weekend. I love that car! 🚗
Happy to help :) I have plenty more C30 videos too!
42nm torque on those 2 bolts holding the tensioners
Will this work for a 2006 c70?
What size is the bolt that holds in the tensioner pulley ?
Nope! Not sure what S40 you had in mind or from what year, but mine from 2002 has different than yours, so unless you correct it, hands down
This applies to the second generation, yours is a first generation.
This video was very helpful and informative. Thank you. Brian Merk
Thank you Brian, I really appreciate the feedback :)
Excellent informative no nonsense video. Thank you
You're welcome and thank you for the feedback!
Thank you for this video! I'm replacing my tensioners today myself. I'll save good amount of money, and I see it only takes 10-15 minutes of work. Great video, man!

Does this c30 require drive belts installed for car to start. Or, can car start without the belts on?
Yes you can start the car without a drive belt, although I would only run it for a couple minutes max.
Great, may be before resintall everything is to test it ;) thx for the video
Thank you!
Great video, thanks.
You are welcome!
Thank you sooo much
I just had this same exact problem on my Volvo changing the belt, the tension pulley was stripped. It was a headache to say the least.
Thank you
What size belt
Great video!
Is it absolutely necessary to swap both tensioners even if they do not make any noise? For me, only the wedge is cracked.
Thank you! If I remember correctly, the recommended maintenance interval is during the timing belt replacement. But I would advise checking the bearing in the pulleys for any play or noise.
@@4DIYers Why are there two tensioners!!!
Top notch video 👌
Thank you so much!

If the belt is slipping and looks glazed, should I inspect if a pulley is locked up or is it just happening with age?
The six thumbs downs must have been by mistake... Kudos man much appriciated!
Perfect explanation!!!
Thank you :)
so one belt goes from alternator to a/c and one from crank to a/c right? what is the name of the crank-a/c belt? it snapped yesterday. do i have to change the tensioner if it was changed last year with the alternator?
great video and so imformative thx
Thank you :)
Add the tensioner steps with moving the tension to place belt a friend got confused but I love this good job
Merciiii
How to tell the squeeky is coming from the tensioner and not from a bad/wrong belt or a dynamo etc?
Thank you for making this video! I loved it. It was very helpful for my 2006 Volvo s40. I keep hearing a chirping sound and was thinking it was the tensioner but now I’m wondering if it’s a pulley gone bad.
Good video.
Remove a fender on a v50. Anyone seen a video how to do it?
Easy job?
Is this the same for D5 engine? Cheers
I’m not sure, never had that model of engine in Canada.
Great video easy to follow
No problem, happy to help :)
A great video
Thank you!
Great video. Do I need to cut the belt if I only going to change the alternator? Do you also have a video of that?
Thank you
No problem!
Hmm - anyone know if there is a difference between the two belts or are they the same size?
Crank to ac belt is smaller. It is 5pk847 and alternator belt is 5pk890
@@amthevision8931 Thanks!
Hi, what is the size of the belt
Thanks so much Mimo
If your C30 is a manual will you please do a step by step on how to do a reverse clutch bleed?
Unfortunately I won't be doing any work on the clutch assembly anytime soon. However I did find this, so hopefully it helps www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Volvo-C30/129-TRANS-Clutch_Master_and_Slave_Cylinder_Replacement/129-TRANS-Clutch_Master_and_Slave_Cylinder_Replacement.htm
Hello mate this process is the same for Volvo v50 1.6 d Ecco as well ?
Thanks
That I'm not sure, we don't have the diesel model available in Canada.
in the Volvo theres a bracket with the pulley wheel do I need to change whole thing or just wheel pulley??
The bracket part would be the tensioner, so that has a spring assembly and they can fail over time too. It's usually best to change the whole thing. Not all companies allow for just the pulley to be replaced, it's cheap insurance to replace the whole thing and if you're paying a shop and the tensioner portion fails, you don't have to pay twice for basically the same job.
Hi do you have a video for the timing belt replacement? for a c30?
I don't have one for the timing belt as of yet.
Will this procedure work for a 2004 Volvo C70?
I believe for the 04 model it's a different procedure. 07+ C70 is basically the same as the C30 shown in the video, it's part of the P1 platform.
Great work
Would this be same for d3. Diesel 5 cylinder. Looks the same side either way
Unfortunately I can't be much help as we didn't have the diesel version available in Canada. However most serpentine belt replacements are somewhat similar. Just be sure to take some photos along the way to reference back for reassembly.
@@4DIYers Thanks
I'm so happy you have the exact same car as me. To good to be true.
