I'm still crankin' on my Big Shot. LOL I have a gazillion dies, and the Big Shot shows no sign of wearing out. I am looking into a Brother Scan 'n Cut. I have looked at electronic machines for about 10 years now. I want one but haven't been able to justify purchasing one yet. And...they just keep getting better and better each year. Thanks for a great video, MayMay. :)
This was a no-brainer for me. One daughter has a Cricut, her sister has Silhouette. I am not the most computer savvy person around, and was turned off by the need for cartridges, wifi, etc. I was totally satisfied with my Cuttlebug.☺️ My sister in law told me about the ScanNCut, and what all it was able to do. After a year of watching videos, and tossing the idea around, I finally decided to get it, after paying off the veterinary bill. My hubby was listening. He said, "It will be here Tuesday!" "What will be here Tuesday?" Your scanning-cutting machine. I just ordered it." I'm keeping him😊, for much more than just that reason. I've had SnC for two years, and have used it for a lot of things, with many more I want to do. I just need to get on it, again!
I would not trade my dx225 for anything well maybe a new scan n cut if it ever dies. I did buy a joy, used iy once it is fun but having to pay to use cricut software is a stopper. Also she didn't say that you can use SNC without wifi or internet just put it on a stick and go for it.
MayMay, you are such a great teacher. Wish you would do some tutorials on making different types of cards on the CricutMaker for us, who just enjoy your classes. I know you try to accommodate crafters on shoestring budgets but I think most of those who follow you have a CRICUT Air 2 or a CricutMaker and would benefit from you teaching us to make different types of cards in Design Space. Texas Aunt Lolly says Howdy.
Thanks I have out grown my machine and I can't wait to purchase the joy. I 💕 love making labels and cards. It is perfect machine for me because I have to carry my heavy machine around to different places to help decorate. Thanks for your information. Everyone ask me what machine to get I will share this video.
May May , this video by far, is one of the BEST and most informative ones, yet! Kudos to you! I can relate so much better with you, because we think so much alike. I was teasing with my hubby and saying “ she’s going to talk me right into getting that Joy machine, and I know it!” 🤣🤣🤣 love ya, girl- keep up the amaziness in you!!
Wow What a very good video. I really enjoyed this on how you explained many options. I have 2 machines the Lg. Cricut Express from many years ago and I found a small Cricut Express. They take the little cartridges. I would love to have the small one you just bought. I create for many small projects for the residents I work with and the Cricut Joy would so come in handy for me to take to work and make the projects. Right now I use the small one and it has sure had its miles. Thank you so much for sharing .
Great video...had a couple of these issues a few years ago..fortunately my hubby is awesome and we worked on what was needed before we bought my air 2...newest technology usually ends up saving you money if you can afford it..it was quite a step from expression...linking cartridges was a nightmare 😀 Never purchase opened cartridges from unknown...once linked to design space you can not link them to your account... However my next step is the Joy!! Birthday..mother's day..celebrating just being crafty!! LOL Thanks again for all your tutorials, I have learned soooo much from you.
Wow...what an awesome video, MayMay! You perfectly broke down so many important points that a person needs to consider before buying one of these machines. Thank you!
Excellent video! So agree about doing homework before you buy and also that you have to put in the time to learn the machine. I've seen so many people on FB get angry and frustrated with their machine because they haven't taken time to learn how it works. Also agree that people should play with the software before they buy a machine. I had download and played with Brother Canvas Workshop months before I bought my Scan n Cut.
I'm rather new to paper crafting and am considering a machine purchase, which is overwhelming. Your information could not have come at a better time! You keep saying. "Do your research." You have done most of it for me. Thank you! Invaluable information.
I can't express just how important everything she is saying is I own EVERY! machine by cricut silhouette and I also own the brother scan and cut DX they are all good machines for certain things but some things I didn't consider was how comfortable I was with technology how much I travel the upkeep of the machine like Matt cost and how many blades are there and will this machine allow me to grow craft wise and are there other companies that make compatible accessories the brother scan and cut DX is probably my favorite of all the machines I have but there are times where I hesitate using it because all of the things that need to be replaced are so expensive with cricket and silhouette there are companies who make compatible accessories although I do not recommend using other mats until your warranty is up that's not even an option with the brother there is no company that makes Mats and accessories that are compatible and the machine has material detection so you pretty much only need one blade but once that one blade is done replacing it is a lot more expensive than replacing a blade from any of my other machines so take your time and choosing the machine and really think it through if possible
Thanks for video. Just got a Brother Scan N Cut SDX85. Mainly a card maker. Like being able to scan a stamped image and cut out without dies. Money saver in the long run. Do want a Cricut Maker for home decor and vinyl projects. Maker has the interchangeable tools.
Open the box! When I got my Scan N Cut, I bought it at my (not so) Local Scrapbook Store. I opened it up and started playing with it in the store. I couldn’t wait to try it out, and the store owner was just as giddy as I was while playing with it. That was a few years ago, but she still tells the story of how excited she was to see the machine work in person. She also took pictures of me using it and put it on her FB page.
Excellent video! So many people need to watch thsi before and after purchase :) And now we have NEW technology ..... again. Embrace change its a good thing. I really enjoy your videos. thank you.
Point #10 applies to me. Years ago I bought a Gemini and I misread the "sandwich" directions . I accidently cut a piece of out the embossing mat and then die cut a design in the cutting mat. I was so upset I cursed the machine and put it back in the box for a year.
Great info Maymay! Two things that came to mind ... 1) Before the machine arrives, decide where you will use it, dedicate a space and you are more likely to take it out of the box when it arrives. 2) Be sure that the level of technology needed to use the machine is compatible with your level of technology ... for instance if you are not tech savvy the Brother Scan n Cut CM model may be better for you than the DX model. You can use the CM without a computer.
That is the second point I made, I hope I was clear on that. Never purchase a machine of any kind if you don't have the tech to operate it and don't purchase it if you can't purchase the tech it needs.
@@MaymayMadeIt I think the point that Christine was making is that some people are more comfortable with technology than others, so you should purchase a machine that doesn't exceed your competence, or comfort level 😅
Christine, the CM models are discontinued! But of course used ones are still around. The DX can be used without a computer also but you would be fairly limited in what you can do. Plus you need WiFi or a connection to a computer to get updates. You can also use an iPad and iPhone to operate the DX, not sure about the CMs.
I agree with taking it out of the box and using it. I stupidly bought a Gemini and waited about six months before I took it out of the box. When I finally did I found out it didn’t work. I believe they had a bad batch there was something wrong with the electrical system and it wouldn’t turn on. If I waited any longer it would’ve been out of warranty.
Okay, Maymay, you've encouraged me to at least look at the box my Gemini cutting machine by Crafters Companion came in and consider where I can put it on my crafting table! I've had this machine for at least 3 or 4 years and it's never been unboxed, so I hope and pray that all the parts are there and in good shape. I've purchased all the cutting plates for the smaller Gemini as I know I can use them in the larger machine that I have, but of course, that all depends on how well my machine works! LOL Thank you so much for encouraging all of us to stop leaving our tools in their boxes and get them out to use them!!! God Bless!!!
So very true and good advice. I can see how intimidating these machines can be. The best way to learn is to dive right in. And the fact that you're watching this video on RUclips makes you one step closer to opening that box and using your tools!
Wow!!! Thank you so much for this post! I had the Cricut Explorer. My daughter is “borrowing “ it and apparently it seems to be a permanent “borrow”. Sooo I am going to buy another one FOR ME. I was thinking the Maker, but I think that may do more than what I plan to use mine for. So I will be getting another Explorer.
First of all, I love hearing you talk. You have a great voice for what you do. Love listening to you. You are also one of the best teachers. Have fantastic tutorials. Thank you for all the work and effort you put into your videos.
Thank you May May for your advice, your video was very helpful. I am still deciding what machine I want to purchase. Hope you post more videos on the subject of the cutting machines.
Great video! I got the same Joy bundle you did at about the same time. I am struggling with Design Space and have watched a number of videos from Cricut and on RUclips. I even signed up for a class next week with Michael's...hoping that will help. But I really hope you do a video on that. You are a really good teacher! Thanks for all your inspiration.
Maymay recommended this video from another video I watched (September 2021) and i highly recommend this video to anyone considering a machine like this. There are many many videos about these machines but this video shows you how to choose one based on your need or planned use. This helped me narrow down my choices easily. I made a list of use ideas and find the Cricut Maker 3 could do them all. Thank you Maymay!
Wonderful video, Maymay! I love all of the information. I purchased a Joy about 6 months ago and have hardly used it because I don't feel confident yet. You've really inspired me!
May May, you're the best. Thanks for all your videos over the years, your great tips, tricks, tutorials, ideas and loads of information and inspiration that you have kindly shared with the world!!!
Great advice!! Long, long ago I had the first little cricket. I loved it and used it so much. I then bought a bigger one and it needed cricket craft room. It was so difficult to use I just stopped using crickets completely.
This was a good video and very wise and true statements when it comes to new machines and technology. My MIL got me the original small Cricut Imagine cutting machine when they first came out then I later purchased a Cricut Expression. So I have lots of cartridge's and knew nothing of Cricut Design space and when I did it was no longer available for my machine. That's on me but I love my machine and suits what I use it for even though its from the dark ages BUT I do enjoy seeing the new technology to see if one day ill want to switch to a new machine.
Excellent video - I love my Air 2 - don’t have a desire to do some of things the Maker does so the Air 2 is just fine for me - now that little Joy is the cutest thing ever - just might have to purchase one
I agree this information was EXCELLENT! I have one machine that I have had four five years and I was trying to decide if I should upgrade to a new machine. Now I will be doing my research. Thank you!!!
Thank you! I wish this was published all over the crafting FB sites.....everyday I see posts like: ”Okay, I bought a ____machine, what can I do with it?” Or, “ I want to start crafting, what machine should I buy?” Ughhhhh! What do YOU want to be able to DO?Research people!! Thanks, Maymay.....vent over now! 🤪😃
Me oooo a little machine that will fit my craft room.. starts researching. Thanks Maymay. these are all great points and a good bit of information and a great plan to help decide which machine you will use.
Well Maymay you but the nail right on the head!!! I wish you put this on before I bought my Cricut Maker! I don't use it, it's a great machine but I mostly make cards and I would rather use my hands for that than a machine! What a silly , huh? Anyway thanks for the video, it's a great help!!! Hugs💗👵
When I was trying to decide what machine I wanted I was watching RUclips videos to see which one did what I want it and it happened to be the cricut well it was right before the maker was coming out so I watched Melody Lane and I knew design space front and back I knew basically how my machine was going to work before I even could purchase it it was wonderful thank you for your time
Excellent advice and video! I have been using the Cricut since they came out with the baby bug, I'm still learning new things about my machines. And I love learning from makers like you and others on You Tube. Hugs, Brenda
What an excellent video! You were spot on! I have a Joy, Air2 and Maker and this video is perfect for someone contemplating a purchase... thank you for making it!
Maymay, thank you for this and your recent Joy videos. I just want to be able to cut images without dies for my cards. Delve into the world of SVG files. I love the size of the Joy. Would you recommend that it would be a good starting level machine? I have a very small craft space.
Hi MayMay. This is good information. The only machine that’s missing is a Silhouette Cameo 3/4 and Silhouette Portrait. I have a Cricut Maker, A ScanNCut 2 and a Cameo 3.
I do not have any silhouette products. I have actually never used their products. For no other reason than for this...when I was making my purchase decision my friend that has a youtube channel and was very knowledgable on machines had just purchased a Silhouette machine. She was raving over it and then she bought a Cricut Explore, right when it came out. The next time I saw her she told me to not buy the silhouette, that I would love the Cricut and its ease of use. I trusted her and that is why I went to the Cricut machines. I do not dislike Silhouette machines or anything like that, I just have never used one and have no opinion on them.
I love my silhouette cameo. But, I still tell people to do there own research. I've only used a cameo and know nothing about the cricut machines. I have had a silhouette for about 10 yrs. On my second one because my original one was lost/stolen in my move. It was in the front seat of my car to keep it safe and findable.
Stephanie, I've been researching this too and I think the Cameo 4 is the way to go!! It can do everything that the Maker can, plus some extra functionality. It doesn't have a built in scanner, but there is a feature that allows you to cut scanned images. You will need to upgrade your software to be about to use SVGs, but it's a one-off payment and gives you a lot more scope for creativity.
@@MaymayMadeIt Thanks I do want ability to scan and cut. I have to fussy cut out a vintage circus set of many pages and multiple pages one circus for 60 people! And I don’t want to do all that hand cutting. One the other hand I also want something for paper crafting 3D projects.
I think you need to look at a comparison between the Cameo 4 and the Scan&Cut 😊 Cameo is significantly more affordable and more versatile but there's an extra step to scanning and cutting - it may be worth the extra expense if that's your main focus.
I was hoping you would do a video like this. I need to research what the Joy is capable of and what the other Cricut machines are capable of in order to make an informed decision. Thanks for sharing!
Fantastic video Maymay, I’m Sharing with a couple of groups and my personal Facebook page I really enjoyed it & appreciate all your videos & wonderful tutorials🙌❤️
Thank you for an informative video! Would you please do another video on the Joy with your SVG files from your stamp set, on how to cut individual images from the SVG. I would seldom want to cut every image from a stamp set, but would want to cut certain images for projects. I would like to use in place of dies.
I will but in the meantime, once you load your SVG you can ungroup them. Then click the ones you don’t want to cut and close the eye that is associated with them. Then they will still be in your saved SVG for next time.
thank you for all the info and the encouragement. I've done my research but haven't felt brave enough to actually purchase anything. I don't trust my research. I'm stumped as to whether I should buy a diecutting machine or a scan n cut. My craft budget is teeny tiny and once I purchase a machine, I will not be able to buy anything else for long while.
If your craft budget is teeny then I would suggest the scan n cut. It would be a one time investment that would work with all your stamped images or any images for that matter and you won’t have to purchase dies for every stamp set you purchase.
Thank you for making me understand the concept behind looking at crafters videos and using their link to the products. I wish the Joy had came out two years ago because I’m a card maker. My space is limited. I started watching you over three years ago and learned so much from you.
I was afraid many people didn't know that is how content creators are supported. Many RUclipsr's have made a living out of teaching with free videos and using links. Actually, that is very common on RUclips in all niche videos. Not just crafting. Supporting your fav creators allows them to keep putting out free content. Thanks!!!
I love your presentation on the machines, I wish you had included the Silhouette machines in your comparisons. A friend of mine has used Cricut for years. She advised me to get a Silhouette because it doesn't depend on connectivity to work. We live in a rural area where internet and cell phone service is spotty at best. I haven't made up my mind yet.
The reason I didn’t include a silhouette is I have never used their products. The only reason I haven’t is I took a friends advice and bought the Cricut. She too had the silhouette machine and a Cricut and told me that she would buy the Cricut again but not the silhouette. I have friends that love their silhouette. I just went with Cricut and have loved it. Cricut is also available offline. It does require updates and I would imagine that the silhouette software requires updates as well. But, do your research and make a confident purchase!!!
Hello dear Maymay! I came across your video, while researching which cutting machine to buy. I currently live in Pennsylvania, but after six months I am returning home to Europe, so I'm wondering if Crucut and Scan'N'Cut can work there because of the difference in electricity? Thanks for great video!
Maymay, this was such a helpful video! I can’t remember how I lucked into purchasing the ScanNCut DX125! I think I was just focused on the scanning feature so I wouldn’t have to buy as many dies anymore. I never even considered a Cricut. I’m glad I made such the right decision for what I wanted to use it for! Having said that, I had to restrain myself from rushing out and buying the Maker and the Joy - just because I want it all! Like right now, I’m having to talk myself down from buying a newer DX! Lol!
I almost ready to purchase the maker. I quilt and want to make fabric covered boxes. My question is can I cut chip board? Thank you for this video this answered many if my questions.
I know this tutorial was published a while ago, but I'm trying to find the right machine for me. It's for wedding invitations for my daughter. I want to know if cricut joy can scan or see an image (stamped or dicut) and cut a shadow to it? I am wanting to purchase specifically for this project but will probably use for card making after. I'm trying to do my research, but I'm not sure how to find out if joy can work in this specific situation. I figured it was best to ask someone who has one. That's you! Brother Scan and Cut, describes what I need in its name.
I have no intention of buying one of those gadgets, but I watched this from beginning to end because I enjoy you so much!🥰 Maybe someday I will buy one...in the distant future. By then there will be some new technology that pushes these machines to the curb.🙄😄 They will be voice controlled or something.🤷♀️
First of all, I want to THANK YOU for taking the time to film and share this video!! It is very informative and I really appreciate it!! After answering your questions to myself, I want to buy the brother scan and cut machine, I buy plenty of stamps or download printables and it is getting expensive with the dies and/or fuzzy cutting is not my thing :)- do you have a dedicated video from this machine? Thank you again!
I'm still crankin' on my Big Shot. LOL I have a gazillion dies, and the Big Shot shows no sign of wearing out. I am looking into a Brother Scan 'n Cut.
Can you do an updated videos of all the new Machines that have came out ?
Thank you! I wish this was published all over the crafting FB sites.....everyday I see posts like: ”Okay, I bought a ____machine, what can I do with it?” Or, “ I want to start crafting, what machine should I buy?”
Ughhhhh! What do YOU want to be able to DO?Research people!!
Thanks, Maymay.....vent over now! 🤪😃
Feel free to share my video, where you are allowed to. Be sure to read the guidelines of the group before sharing. Thanks!
I already have the maker and joy but this video was great!!! The machines can be intimidating but you make it so easy.
Best explanation ever . You have answered so many of my questions. Thank you 🙏
Thank you, Maymay!
Me oooo a little machine that will fit my craft room.. starts researching. Thanks Maymay. these are all great points and a good bit of information and a great plan to help decide which machine you will use.
Very good info for someone starting new! Thank you Maymay!
Hugs💗👵
This is a great video, MayMay!! Thank you!
Love this video…thank you for putting this information out there it was just what I needed 😁
What an excellent video! You were spot on! I have a Joy, Air2 and Maker and this video is perfect for someone contemplating a purchase... thank you for making it!
This was very helpful. One thing that should be mentioned - know your space. How much space will you need to use the machine?
You’re awesome May May, you always give great information.....thanks for the time and effort you put into your videos🌈
Maymay, thank you for this and your recent Joy videos. I just want to be able to cut images without dies for my cards. Delve into the world of SVG files. I love the size of the Joy. Would you recommend that it would be a good starting level machine? I have a very small craft space.
I believe you will find the Joy machine so useful. You may never out grow it but for what it can do, you will love it's convenience.
Excellent advice! Thank you so much. You are very good with your presentation. A lot to think about.
Thanks Maymay
Thank you so much for this great video! Now I have a path to follow to figure out if I really want a machine!,
@@MaymayMadeIt - That’s understandable. I do find that the Cricut is more user friendly. I’ve had a Cricut since it first came out.
Very good advice and so true. I’m trying to decide between Silhouette, Maker and Scan and Cut. I think I may need two based on what I need them to do.
You are doing your homework! Sounds to me like you want to scan and cut images! Ifcan afford it the scan n cut is a great expensive pair of scissors!
@@donnutella1519 thanks Donna. I do want something that can fussy cut and cut the svg files for 3D projects.
I think you need to look at a comparison between the Cameo 4 and the Scan&Cut 😊 Cameo is significantly more affordable and more versatile but there's an extra step to scanning and cutting - it may be worth the extra expense if that's your main focus.
Great advice, thank you. Off to start my research!🙂
What about Silhouette:)
Amen to #9!!!
If the price is too good to be true, it’s not true. Something crucial is missing- like the blades. Probably something you can’t buy on its own!
Thanks for the great info! I absolutely love love love your hair style! It really looks good on you.
Wonderful video, Maymay. The information was well put, clear and concise. Thanks!
Fabulous video. Over the top information.
I was hoping you would do a video like this. I need to research what the Joy is capable of and what the other Cricut machines are capable of in order to make an informed decision. Thanks for sharing!
This video was very timely and helpful for me. I’m trying to decide which machine I need to purchase. Thank you!
Fantastic video Maymay, I’m Sharing with a couple of groups and my personal Facebook page I really enjoyed it & appreciate all your videos & wonderful tutorials🙌❤️
Thanks for sharing!!
Such a great video, MayMay. I don't even need a machine but this was such good info. TFS!
I too would like to see a video on how to create SVG files and how to use them!
Thanks so much for this video!
thank you for all the info and the encouragement.
@@MaymayMadeIt thank you Maymay! Thank you for being so direct!!
Thanks!!!
Wish I had seen a video like this two years ago when I bought my maker. Good video.
You're so fabulous. I love that you tell it like it is. Hope you find joy in your machine. 😂💙💙💙
Hello dear Maymay! I came across your video, while researching which cutting machine to buy. I currently live in Pennsylvania, but after six months I am returning home to Europe, so I'm wondering if Crucut and Scan'N'Cut can work there because of the difference in electricity? Thanks for great video!
Thank you
MayMay, what a great video! Thank you!
May May do you do Cricut Maker vids? Or just for Iphone?
Amazing information
Ty
I would love to learn about th machines. Thank you.
This is a great video. Thank you so much
Thanks, Maymay, for this great video. It was so helpful to me.
Big thank you!!! This helped so much ♥️♥️♥️
Maymay, this was such a helpful video!
The maker can cut chipboard up to 2mm thickness
I have a video in that if you have a chance to find it. Thanks!!
EXCELLENT!
Hi, the Cricut Joy does not have a scan featured, thanks
This is so very helpful!! Thank you, Maymay!!!
TFS your knowledge and tips...
I have no intention of buying one of those gadgets, but I watched this from beginning to end because I enjoy you so much!🥰
Maybe someday I will buy one...in the distant future. By then there will be some new technology that pushes these machines to the curb.🙄😄
They will be voice controlled or something.🤷♀️
Thank you! That is so kind!!!
Have you done tutorials for cardmaking using the joy?

Thanks so much May May!
Hello here is some Scan n Cut videos that may help you: ruclips.net/video/bfSysA9hhts/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/LvAE8aVVg4w/видео.html , thanks
