so true Dave Stevens is the king of drawing faces, you always know who youre looking at...love seeing his books picking up in value for a new generation of collector
I also went, but Saturday afternoon which explains why I didn't see you. I also, almost missed the main room, and almost left thinking that the show wasn't worth my drive and time, but then finally found the big room which was great cause I was able to fill in a HUGE chunk of my Punisher War Journal run along with some other Punisher books I needed and for such great prices. Always a gre away to spend a Saturday afternoon.
Hey Mike, thanks for mentioning me (Andrew) and Josh in your video. I hope you enjoy the Transformers #1. Read it and let me know at the next show where we run into each other! Cheers and love the channel
There is a great Dave Stevens Documentary called "Drawn to Perfection" I just watch it and its great. I now understand the allure and want to collect Dave Stevens.
Awesome!! Thank you for sharing the Phantom Lady! Definitely put it on my list as soon as you mentioned it last time. Now, having seen it. It has jumped up the ladder in importance. Usually, when the youtubers (not including you and some others. Basically the sellers) hype up something. I always think it's them hyping something up to dump them. However in the way of Dave Stevens his art is truly great. You brought up facial features and I totally agree! Him, Brian Bolland, and Adam Hughes are the greatest of the greats imho. Another great vid Mike.
I was a Dave Stevens fan way before he became this month's flavour and I will be long after "the community" (the few who shout loudly enough to set trends and the rest who follow) moves onto someone else. And it's Stevens' skill in drawing faces, not only celebrities but also his own characters like Cliff Secord/The Rocketeer and Betty Page, which first attracted my attention. Then, after reading Chapter One of The Rocketeer in Mike Grell's Starslayer #2, I immediately saw that he wrote as well as he drew, a rare combination. Bill Everett's work on Marvel's Sub-Mariner in the 1970s is very enjoyable.
The Dan Stevens thing is man-made weather. Couple of RUclipsrs and IGers mention something enough, the word and fomo travels throughout the entire community. It's happened before with Michael Turner, then Darwyn Cooke, then Frezetta and then Bruce Timm 🤷🏽♂️ As for Darren Warren Johnson, he's great. His art style is intentionally rough so when you first encounter it, it doesn't grab you, but once it does, you realize that he is one of THE best visual storytellers we have in western comics!
Bingo.. Dave Stevens wasn’t even talked about last year or for years and yet I need to get those books now hahaha love the social media hyping books that never were popular.
Do you have Elvira's House of Mystery # 11? A Dave Stevens cover. That was an elusive one for me until recently when I snatched it up on a Facebook auction group. Not that I'm coveting Dave Stevens covers. I wanted it to complete the run. Might explain why prices run high. But it was a very decent looking comic for what I paid. Great vid.
My buddy TJ and I hit the Saturday show and it was busy. Got there an hour early and it was nice to run into some friendly faces and buy some books. Will definitely go to this one again. Made for a great day out! Great upload Mike
Looks like you had a great time at the show. I’ve been to 2 shows already this year and they were great. Congrats on your getting some great deals at the show. Keep up the good work. 😎
Awesome pickups! I loved all the books and I don’t normally like submariner but love that cover! The con looked like tons of fun, hopefully I’ll be at another next month perhaps.
TRANSFORMERS! Steeped in 80's goodness. I have not yet branched off into the Joe comics, but am really enjoying the big bots. Gotta say, that Elvis cover is pretty terrific ! #morethanmeetstheeye
So funny you saw foreign language books there I just dm’d you asking a question about one. I have the transformers not read it yet. I’m ready for con season.
I love this show. I picked up 99% of original Hellblazer run for $60 last year. I missed it this time but hope to see you and Ben in Greenfield at Hawks&Reed!
Nice, this year's show looks like it has even more books than last year, unless I'm misremembering. I really enjoyed going last time around, I got a copy of ASM 607 in great condition at a very good price. I needed to ward off temptation and skip it this time in order to save a little cash for the NH show in a couple of weeks!
I was just a wondercon for 3 days this past weekend and as a social experiment I mentioned hoping to find cheap Dave Stevens covers at several booths and was scoffed at and told “good luck” by most of the vendors there . I recall seeing the Jonny quest one in so many dollar bins, ended up paying $5 for one on Sunday from my vendor friend who didn’t scoff at me and originally had it at $20… lesson of the day is make friends or spend an arm and a leg on DS IN 2024… or just wait for the hype to die down
Just found an unread King Kong 1 that looks like it was bagged and boarded the day it out came out for a $1. They're still out there if you keep looking.
The old Marvel Transformers comic was my gateway drug into comics. I have always collected them and this new series has been very interesting! DWJ art in them has been amazing! He is only doing the art until issue 6, but is continuing as the writer. Hope you enjoy it, it gets crazier thru issue 6!
Daniel Warren Johnson is amazing. I never read a Transformers comic and never really wanted to until this. Even bought a transformer toy because of it haha. What an absolute blast of a comic (as with all of DWJ's work).
I think the documentary on Amazon prime and RUclips influences are making him more well known. There are a ton of books out there. Every day there are 50 plus new Stevens books posted on eBay. A planet comics 9.8 sold for $1,190 three days later a 9.8 sold for $2,295. The prices are going thru the roof and I believe the market will soon be flooded.
Simple... Dave Stevens: Drawn to Perfection documentary out on Netflix. I have a French magazine with Dave stevens' cover, i cant seem to find a value or similars. Collected all his work since he came out...Rocketeer long before the movie.
Nice pick ups Mike. I made there on Sunday. Got a few books nothing crazy except for one. Found Jenny Frison's 1st published work on Voltron a legend forged 1 variant for $2. Only 2 listed on ebay that I saw for $180 and $199. Love Frison and been on the hunt for it for a while. You got way better footage than me. Lol. 👊🏼
Yes, Dave Stevens books are hot! I knew of him back in the 80s but didn’t pay attention to his stuff until you and Jeff from Comic Spa showed off DNAgents 24 in an older video. That was it for me! That was the start 😀 By the way, does anyone else think that Crossfire on that Elvis cover looks like RDJ?
Really enjoyable video and I salute 🫡 you for not overspending. When I go to cons I like picking up Reader’s Copies of Golden and Silver Age titles. Did you see any there? I love the stuff you got here, especially that Submariner. Nice haul and great video!
I don't know a lot about manga comics but that Golgo 13 creator sadly passed away a few years back. I'm guessing that comic would be one to hold on to. Hugely popular series.
I'm a no go on collecting Dave Stevens stuff Mike. I have 2, but I'm not chasing them at all. Like his art and all, but the comics he illustrated just isn't my flavor. That new Transformers run is great. I was a fan of the original stuff when I was a kid and this run is brutal and for those kids all grown up. As a Namor and New Wariors fan, I been looking for that Issue 50 for awhile, but either can't find around me or the 2 times I saw it was picked to high for me. Even though you only got a few, they are great books!
Thanks for sharing, Mike! I noticed you mentioned trading away the TMNT book you had. I'm curious about how you normally initiate trades like that. I'm in western CT and it seems like none of the comic shops are buying or trading anymore (at least the ones I've been reaching out to). I've been trying to trade more this year in my constant struggle to keep my collection to only 2 short boxes (I'm not doing a good job, LOL), but no one seems to want to and I'm not really on social media (by choice). Thanks!
In that particular case I traded with some friends, but I usually ask comic shops if they are amenable to trading and at what % of total value. Lots of shops will trade it just comes down to how much value they are willing to give and if it’s not super favorable to you, trading with other collectors is usually the better option
I really want that transformers book, but could not find it. The other one that’s kind of cool is void rivals. Another transformers, G.I. Joe universe book.
I'm not gonna say it, I'm probably gonna say it, I saw an uncanny X-Men so this is your (hopefully) friendly reminder that we wanna see it. Also as a side note that Batman 251 looked great man I wish I had one of those. But thank you again for another great video too 😊
I’m actually working on dripping the video! It’s going to be a long one and I’ll have to work on it in bits and pieces so it will take a while to make, but I want it to be good!
@@lunchmoneycomics YESSS I knew my reminding would work, that is an awesome update. Don't worry I'll watch every second of it and appreciate it in its entirety.
