    One of the biggest misconceptions about artist is that they are able to draw from their imaginnation perfectly and fluently without any reference.

      Ugh! My middle school art teacher used to force my class to draw without references. She said she wanted us to use our imagination, not copy someone else's work (which I get it), but for a bunch of 11-12 year olds who can barely draw stick figures, that was HARD. I've been drawing for almost 10 years and I still use references.

    I'm really surprised you didn't bring up the substance abusing artist stereotype! This notion that drugs or alcohol is the reason for art that's weird or unusual really bothers me, and I feel like it delegitimizes an artist's creative sensibilities

    • @UnbeltedSundew
      @UnbeltedSundew 2 года назад +6

      Yes, I hate that one. Typically it assumed that they draw inspiration from the substance abuse, but the fact is it was already there, and likely the substance abuse just lowered their inhibitions to create. Inevitably their art always suffers from the substance abuse and quite often they simply die and so does their ability to make art. It's a short term solution to a problem all artists face, and there is a far better solution available, but obviously requires more work and effort, but that work and effort is still far easier than stopping substance abuse and then having to learn how to lower your artistic inhibitions properly anyways.

    • @ellebastonart
      @ellebastonart 2 года назад +1

      @@UnbeltedSundew Couldn't have said it better myself! I know my mom believed for a long time that Lewis Carrol was an opioid user, hence the whimsical aspects of Alice in Wonderland and the smoking caterpillar character, when he actually told the story to Henry Liddell's three daughters while rowing up the River Isis, and wrote it down because they loved it so much (To give another quick example, looking at Louis Wain's artwork from his later life, it might be easy for someone to give it a once-over and ask "what was he on when he painted this?", when in reality he most likely has a mental or neurological disorder)
      This artist myth only occurred to me after the fact, but I also wanted to add that I think the whole perverted artist stereotype is another example of painting with a broad brush (pun definitely intended). It's a pretty prevalent one from my point of view, ranging from the live drawing from nude models trope to the thirsty doujin artist stock character in anime in manga, and it'd be cool to see Mark share his two cents about it in a hypothetical second installment of these kinds of videos

    I think the "can't do anything unless inspired" is a mininterpretation to "what do you do if you have burnout" since well, mental health really hasn't been taken seriously, even by doctors, until recently so the general public didn't have the words.
    Like "I can't make anything, so I might as well goof off" makes perfect sense if you have burnout or are beginning to, like that's a very good thing to do, if you're sick of art, take a damn break.
    Like if you can smell the burnout just fucking stop and do something else otherwise you'll regret it
    and for heaven's sake don't freaking power through, some people's brains literally break and they cant work anymore, they lost the knowledge cuz they ran themselves too hard with any type of talent.

    • @Xurelbes
      @Xurelbes 2 года назад +1

      Yup, burnout definitively sucks and your advice is great. And it's nice to remember you can get a burnout from other areas on your life and have an impact on your art because of that. I mean, doing art itself can be stressful and become even more hard to do if you're drained out by your work or college for example (even if they're not related to art itself).
      I feel like artists need to be more aware of what's going on in their lives instead of just caring if they're doing art or not.

    I know that for me, I almost only do decent artwork at night, and I can narrow it down to 2 reasons. One, it's quiet at night so I can focus one what I'm doing, and two, I need to be a little tired, cause if I'm awake, I'll overthink things like crazy and ruin anything I'm working on.

  • @oZyn

    I can sometimes find myself getting immersed in a particular piece, and work on it for a very long time. While I wouldn't call myself a night owl, I think there are definitely instances where I work late at night because I have other responsibilities during the day. Thus, it's my only time to really get some art practice in.
    In the same way that someone might say at night, "I'm going to get up tomorrow at 5:00 am and go for a run." Whether or not a person follows through, I think sometimes our brains can get bursts of motivation at night. It might be seen as somewhat weird to go for a run at midnight, but working on a drawing doesn't have that same connotation -- at least in my opinion. The difference being, the person motivated to go for the midnight run probably won't follow through, at least not that night. However, it is less out of norm for an artist to go work on a piece at night.
    So I think sometimes I get bursts of motivation at night, and can find myself becoming completely engaged and focused on an illustration or project into the late hours of the night. Plus, it is easy to spend a lot of time on a piece, especially if you are motivated and it is coming out the way you want it. So if you started at night, it just inherently means you will be up late.
    Edit: As an addition to this, I think that artists spend a lot of time in their formative years treating art as a hobby. You aren't a professional until you're a professional. So many times art gets relegated behind other things throughout the day -- Be it school, work, or any other crucial activity that hogs a lot of time. I think this means that many young artists end up working at night lest they sacrifice focus on their daily lives. So there is probably some truth to the night work stereotype. You do things when you can.

    I think this notion of "success" should also be widely redefined as something beyond commercial success. Moving to New York and basking in the glory of adoring eyes - does that automatically make your way of viewing life any more artistic, or your perception, motoric skills or aesthetic thinking any better?

    As someone who has tinkered with art nonprofessionally for years, I have nothing but the utmost gratitude and respect for those that do it professionally, and if anything, I think all the available art, across medium, genre, time, and region, is incredibly undervalued. It's one thing for an artist to request commissions for their own practice, but to ask them to produce for free is abhorrent to me. If your budget is $0.00 just enjoy what they already offer, if you want more than that at least offer something of value, fair trade, and often that means cash, for the effort (and keep in mind the years of effort it takes to become and maintain the skills to produce quality art in your evaluation)

    I used to be one of those ‘night owl’ artists. Late at night, I would attempt to go to bed but would spring out of the bed to draw because I was watching other people drawing. After I feel satisfied of what I drew at the moment, I would then rest and look forward to the morning of my accomplishment. Unfortunately, it turns out that since I was very tired, my eyes weren’t doing so well or something that it made it seem like it was good, but when I looked at it again, well rested in the morning, it looked bad.

    I agree with the inspiration part. You have to make it happen. At the very least, you’re practicing to improve your skills. I tell my students to write or draw anything.
    I half think the creativity is something someone is born with. I see stories everywhere - I try to visualize how something works or how someone ticks. I’ve met people who can’t think creatively. The question to ask - is it something we’re born with, or lack of drive?
    This is coming from an amateur writer.
    I do like your mentioning the “have to move to XYZ to be successful”. I was reading an intro to a noir style novel, and they basically said you have to move to LA to write noir. Perhaps I’m just a n00b, but there were plenty of cities that would serve as back drops, rich with things to turn into a fascinating noir story.

When I was a child and wanted to draw, it took many years, teachers, and a lot of practice before people considered me a "good artist." He who is truly an artist, is truly a rebel. Only a rebellious heart and mind gives birth to growth and evolution.
    Defiance means choosing good over evil, right over wrong, love over hate, rebellion over chains, liberty over slavery, and generally everything that is good over everything that limited and degrading.
    True art is not about how well you draw, write, paint, dance or perform.
    The artist may occasionally, temporarily tire of the performance they do with the "body", but the creativity and spirituality is always burning ever brighter and more brilliant, growing and rising, growing and rising, growing and rising... among other things...
    True art is abut the love and the active, proactive passion that goes into doing the thing itself, for the sake of doing so...
    For creative, intuitive, intelligent, philosophical, soulful and spiritual reasons, rebellious and defiant, courageous, volatile and adventurous motives and reasons, among other things...

    About myth #9. I’m a standing ovation of this. I’ve YET to be discoverred until I DO become famous. I keep trying many different things as being myself (i.e. Graphic Design, Illustration, Sprite work, and even my own traditional pieces, too).
    I do whatever I can, and I just go “whatever”. As an artist myself, I have basically become like George W. Bush with the whole mentality of being a “master of low expectations. Now, I’m not composing this comment as a means of garnering any symphathy points, but rather I’m telling how it is. I LOATHE Social Media like Facebook, Twitter (espeically Twitter with how toxic it has become over the years). Even back when they first came out in 2006 & 2007 respectively, I always thought that there was indeed something OFF about those platforms.
    Even with censorship going around more than ever, it defeats the entire purpose of being free to express YOURSELF, and not to some woke ideaology don’t you think?

    On artists being night owls, that is a common perception. I have one of those late-night daily schedules myself, but I'm usually only doing repetitive/grunt work at night, whereas most of the more difficult, intensely creative work that requires more thought I have to do in the morning or early in the day. So for me it would be kind of yes in terms of productivity, but maybe no as far as inspiration goes.

    One thing that I've heard countless times is that you have to start at a very young age and then they go on about how Mozart or some other incredible super talent did huge stuff at the age of six or something. While that may be true in the sense that you will probably be better off if you have the fundamental basics of your particular art down while you're young(ish) it really does not mean that you can't learn to draw, play, write, act etc. when you get older. I think it all depends on your willingness to try new things and desire to learn. That's my best "Captain Obvious" -type opinion on the subject.

It's also negated by the entirety of human history until the modern period where art just got really really bad, and is now getting better again thanks to the fact this myth is, thankfully, slowly being destroyed.

    I literally tend to stay up until 6 am, wake up at 3 pm. I've tried fixing my sleep schedule, but I'm slowly slipping back into that time frame.
    That said, I don't think it's so much an art thing as just me being a natural night owl for other reasons. ^^;

      That "art can't be taught" thing is also 100% talking about the talent myth. People see artists produce amazing work without seeing the years of hard practice and work, and it feels like they just always were like that.
      Truth is, talent isn't a big thing. It's just a small amount that quickly fades away the higher up you grow on the ladder.

    Wow, I watch your video and I ask myself: "What is Art?" I cannot come up with a single definition. I believe that Art must be INTENTIONAL. One may include random events-like dipping a toothbrush in paint and then flipping the bristles-But the results of RANDOMLY throwing paint at canvas cannot be considered "Art" -or letting Earthworms dipped in finger-paint crawl across a canvas-or whatever. {Yes, I've seen some virtuosos who can throw paint with surprising control-even making portrait or landscapes-BUT that is bo longer RANDOM.} Second, Art cannot be done by rote. Things done by rote are CRAFT-NOT ART. There are master craftsmen and they are admirable-but that doesn't make what they do "ART." There are gray areas. Someone might create cut-out silhouettes from a pattern bought online-and then use TRUE ART to paint them and arrange them in innovative formations. Beyond those two things-I don't want to argue. IF YOU consider what you do is ART-I'm happy for you-even if I silently disagree.

    Nah, I just don't have it. All my attempts at learning to draw have been nothing but painful. Both physical and emotionally. It's not for me.
    I care about results only, not the process.

      The process does matter to you if the attempts of LEARNING were painful, but perhaps not in the process of MAKING. but if you don't want to do drawing, there's plenty of other ways of art like music.
