Mark has been invaluable to many of us. Been creating my own manga story for over a decade now and many of the techniques that I’ve used I learned from him. Thanks, Mr. Crilley. 🙏

I made too many drawings with fine details first, this is important to remember to do it like this video demonstrates with large forms lightly rendered, then small details after. When I observe this convention I always appreciate my efforts more. Thanks MC, for the reminder.

5:00 - I'm always hesitant to erase part of my drawing to have something else overlapping it... (especially when I've already added details)
But I'm gradually getting over it because it really helps to give the drawing a sense of depth and three-dimensionality, it can make the illustration look even better!

Literally my drawing inspiration when RUclips still ran on cat videos. Thank you so much Mark for all your great advice and art artwork. I literally draw my sketchy lines the exact way you do, and I think it’s cause of the shear amount of Crilley I used to watch back in the day

Thank you Mark for showing us your secrets. I really like hearing your voice. I don't draw (I'd love to, but I feel like I am too scared and intimidated to try), but watching your videos and listetning to you talk and explain your techniques somehow calms me down. Cheers from Poland, thank you for being YOU for so many years. Take care!

It's so awesome you're still making videos, you're a huge inspiration to me and the reason I started drawing art, particularly anime art. I found your channel when i was about 12, I am 23 now! I had a bunch of your novels and your "how to draw manga" books when I was in high school. Thank you dude, you've created soooo many manga artists. I'm a professional now
also this video is STILL very helpful, even with all of my training. You teach more in a single video than the all classes i took combined

I started watching when you only had about 10 videos posted and I loved every single one. I learned so much from you all those years ago. Now I'm back and realizing how much I still have to learn. I'm so impressed at how much you've grown as an artist . Thank you for everything

I really liked the part where you said “just touching looks kind of awkward. Either pull it away or commit to it fully overlapping.” (Not exact quote). I’ve seen this in my own work but couldn’t pinpoint exactly what was wrong that clearly.
The only thing I find odd is no mention of using a reference photo for maximum authenticity and accuracy. Any reason why?

  • @craftypod

Wow! Once again you've taken a topic I've been struggling with, and broken it down into simple steps. I've always found these kinds of details difficult, and after watching this and looking back over old drawings, I can see that I haven't been overlapping the elements enough. Plus, the technique of laying in the basic shapes and then adding detail - that's brilliant. Thank you, Mark!
Totally agree about perspective. It's kind of inescapable. When I finally devoted some time to learning about it and practicing, I found that my drawings started to "read" better.

Do you have a video or can you do a video on drawings where a character doesn't actually have an outline but you can still tell their form and face using line strokes? I know mangas do this a lot, I'm particularly thinking of a picture from the Berserk manga.

  • @Zaxnafein

I think a quick perspective lesson would have sufficed. Especially for what looks like a simple one-point. Also for background design the best tip I was given was to design around a function. For example this girl is studying, ask yourself where is she? Her personal room? Library? Then ask what would she need to study? Using this example it looks like she's studying in her room. To study she would need a light source via lamp, her sources are books hence the book shelf, she'd need papers to write on so extra paper and pens/pencils etc. How would she organize the pens? Via cup or pen tray etc. From there is gets easier because you can personalize the room now by adding toys, pictures, posters. I know this is long but this is what really helped me out when it came to backgrounds.

After the details were put in (before shading), I almost felt like the picture, and figure, was a bit crowded. Maybe it's my personal preference, I prefer simpler styles, and if that involves some 'dead space', especially around what I want the main figure to be, it feels more comfortable.

For me one of the biggest challenges is when to add more details while drawing my comic: sometimes I feel like I start adding more and more and distracts from the focus of the scene, while other times the background of the panel still feels somewhat empty.
And, of course, perspective also is a beast to be tamed.

I learned so much from you that I feel I owe all of my thanks to you for the artist I have become and the progress I have made over the years. Your teachings have and always will resonate through me. Thank you sensei 🫡🙏🏻
