I have to say, Mark, after these last ten years and following you.. it's been hard- graduation, health issues, job issues, people's negative attitudes and not fully understanding, it really weighs you down. Art has been my escapism. Feeling that all of my 'good' writings and drawings were from back in college and now not being able to reach 'that' again. But now I understand that was another time and place, and this new year and new decade is promised with self-care and healing so I can get my strength back to work and help around the house and get back to sitting in a chair to do my art. It absolutely does take time and we need to have humility to understand and not rush the healing process or the art process as they both coincide with each other. Thank you for this video and it's something I can rewatch when I need a boost. It was much needed you have no idea.. and I know others will benefit, too. Thank you

Been watching Mark crilleys vids since I was 8 and he Def. Played a big role in me developing my drawing talent and curiosity =) from memories of my brother showing me my first mark crilley video which was how to draw a Manga girl to him responding to my Facebook drawing post where I tagged u made me go nuts as a kid because u were my RUclips idol, which made me want to work even harder. Even if I don't comment alot I'm watching almost every video. Currently 9 years later (still watching his videos) I can finaly just draw what my imagination wants and I can put everything on paper and you played a huge role in that because you sparked that curiosity as a kid and taught me the basics before I could develop my own style, thankyou mark, keep doing what you love!

Whether it's next year or the year after, or even the next decade, your time will come. If you don't fail then you won't know just how amazing success can feel like. No project is wasted, everything improves us, even each page that goes in the bin. Keep drawing, keep being creative. If 2020 isn't your year of success, make it your year of improvement.

I almost scrapped my story I intend to publish someday as a manga. I finally broke through this block a few months ago, and I reread my writing and picked up a few projects I never finished. I used to listen to your videos when I would paint every week, this is the first video of yours that I have watched in 2 years. I needed a pep talk. Thanks Mark! That "make that thing" advice is so true. Because that "thing" you want to make changes throughout your life. I actually held off on creating this one story because I wanted to reach a certain skill level first. The time rolled around years later, but I had totally lost connection with that original "thing" because I was in a completely different place in life. By then, there was another "thing" I wanted to make. Make that thing now, because that's where you are right now.

Mark, you are an absolute inspiration.
Envy and imposter syndrome used to be my worst problem. I would get so irritated seeing so many artists with such distinct styles, and I would shy away from feeling good about my work. It was beaten into me that seeing another artists influence in my style was bad and unoriginal. After finding the comic that stuck with me, I decided "I dont care if I'm ready yet. I'm making this NOW" worked on the story & character designs and premiered it online half a year later. I regained my confidence (albiet, having to fake some of it at first), started thinking for myself and just kept going the way I wanted. Still working on that comic currently and despite many pitfalls along the way, I'm feeling happier than I ever have.
Got a big stack of comics I look to for inspiration from time to time, and you bet Brody's Ghost and Miki Falls are in there. Thank you Mark, for being you! Keep up the great work.

I'm now a hardcore runner. I'm talking 20+ miles everyday. So ill share advice from that part of my life for it may help someone.
    1. Its not always gonna be fun and easy. But always have a smile on your face and it will make that challenge seem a lot smaller
    2. I dont always run in 70* weather with no humidity. I run in the rain. The snow. The cold. The heat. The running trains the body. The weather trains the mind. So continue to push yourself past your limits and into the areas youve never gone
    3. This one is from my art days in highschool. Pay attention to ALL criticism. Even the a-holes who are mean. My art capabilities seemed to broaden when I took the taunts and jokes to heart then drew purely from my emotions and made growth with my skill

A lot of iTunes videos talk about how you can make a living of your work and the hurtles you need to overcome to get there. You are the first one I have seen that said just draw because you love it. You have reignited that flame for me and that means the world to me. Thank you! I have no intention of becoming a professional, I miss drawing just for me.

If you decide to post your art on twitter, Instagram, or facebook. Dont let the lack of likes or comments tell you that you have no skills. Your work will be seen by the right people. Also dont rely on social media to show your work.

This video really helped me. Thank you so much for what you do, I look forward to your videos every week. I can't explain it but they have a really nostalgic and calming quality to them, I'm just so grateful for what you provide.
I also just wanna say you working on traditional art is super inspiring, I don't have anything against digital artists in fact I find some of their work truly magnificent but I myself my whole 25 years on this earth haven't had any access to digital art and have only been able to draw traditionally so I find your videos extremely relatable and inspiring.

Thanks for lifting up the spirits. This, combined with coffee, made me pick up that pen again.
As artists, we can see from various perspectives, and we often get trapped in looking through negative perspectives on ourselves. The world does a very good job at being against us, all the time; so logically, it doesn't make much sense for us to be against ourselves too. We need to keep focusing on that PMA: (Positive Mental Attitude). Whenever you draw something you're not quite satisfied with, take a break from it, work on a few other things, then come back to it, and start again on a new piece of paper. Try changing the angle or the expression just a little bit, and then you'll have something you're really proud of.
I've also struggled in meeting deadlines, and that's been a major area of stress and depression in my life; so I came up with mini deadlines, as checkpoints on the way to the final deadline. I divided everything down into manageable little predictable segments, and allowed myself room in my schedule for some flexation. Without adding free-time to your schedules, deadlines will just pile up, and you'll be even more stressed during emergencies that throw your schedule out the window.
I think it's also important to work on your project every day, unless you really need a vacation from it, even if it's only for a minute. Often the hardest thing to do is just pick up that pen and make a stroke with it. If you get yourself used to picking up that pen every day, eventually you'll find it easier to get into the flow of things.
One more tip I learned recently: If you have a complicated background, and a complex foreground, draw them on separate pieces of paper, then combine them. That way your background won't be at a weird angle, because you can't see what's behind your foreground character. And, you can rotate the background or foreground, and even resize it to make the scene you want to show really pop.

Thank you for making this video.
Your channel helped me when I was first getting into art in 2012 or 2013, and it's been a while since I've popped back in. The last few months, I've been struggling with feelings of inadequacy and this last week it's really just gotten me down. Whether it was the algorithm or some site listening to my woes and selling my information, your video popped up on my recommended feed, and you said pretty much everything that I've been needing to hear.
Things can get really difficult and frustrating sometimes, but it's nice to just sit back and work on a project while having a calming video in the background. So thank you, and I hope the next decade brings you success.

Number seven is especially true. Growing up I’ve always looked up to my older siblings art and envied it. So I kept asking them to teach me since I was in elementary school. They would only tell me, “Monkey see, monkey do.” That was their only lesson to me. So I took what they gave me and started to study the movements they made and created my own style on top of that. It has brought me very far in life to take pieces that I learn from others.

Thank you for this video and for your kind words of encouragement :) I graduated from college last year 2018 and have yet to get a job in the art field.... I was so burnt out after college that I had grown to hate creating & it had become a serious anxiety trigger for me. I'm trying to find the joy/pleasure in creating again, b/c I am not fulfilled in my current non art field job. I want to make it happen, but it's been hard to get back into the habit of creating again when I'm often so hard on myself. Trying to start practicing again and just letting myself be at whatever level I am at in that moment.

    1. You dont have to be perfect
    2. Holding yourself to a high standard does not mean beating yourself up.
    3. Artistic progress is not always steady (sometimes stagnant, sometimes going backward)
    4. Theres nothing wrong with taking a break.
    5. Dont let anyone make you feel that you are untalented, or that you are not a 'real' artist.
    6. Sometimes a project that you started with great enthusiasm will just fizzle out. (Happens to everyone so move on).
    7. Dont just compare yourself to artists you like. Get inspired by them. Study their work. Copy it. Learn some of their tricks.
    8. Other artiste may look like they are having an amazing life, but dont be fooled.
    9. Art in its purest form is not about being popular, making money or winning awards.
    10. Make that thing. Draw that picture you've been wanting to draw. Write that story. Try that crazy idea you've always wanted to try. Get it done. Put it out there and share it with the world. It may start out bad, but you'll make it better. And then you'll make it great. Because you are an artist. And that's what artists do.

I kinda needed this, I made the mistake of not learning art while I still had the time, mostly because I could never finalize whether I wanted to do art as a career or not. When I did, I was unfortunately already in my senior year in high school so I knew basically nothing. Somehow I made it to art college but just the pressure of not being developed or not knowing anything compared to my classmates who HAVE been drawing for 10+ years or so gets intimidating or has sometimes pressured me into just quitting all together. I guess just the fear of unemployment or not knowing what to do after college because I dont feel good enough is whats really getting me. So thanks for the pep talking Mark :)

I find that criticism from others is THE MOST important, whether positive or negative criticism. The key is to know how to deal with it. Even what you momentarily perceive as the worst critique, when time passes by you will be able to decide if it was correct or false to you (according to what is true to you). If it was right, then use it to develop yourself. If it was wrong, then get rid of it, and never keep it inside you, because it could hender or even worsen your development.

my art suffers the more I force it or try to be perfect if I just get into my creative space and relax then the best usually shows up. We are a self critical bunch: we are critical of ourselves and our work. My work varies every day based on how tired I am or how much I am pushing myself to create. My lesson has been more relaxed creating...and really good self care to renew the creativity muse!

I loved your advise. I started drawing manga in the last decade, and I've since used your books and videos as a guide to helping me. I have felt sometimes my artistic talents aren't good enough yet, and get discouraged over seeing other people's, mainly mangakas', work. But my dad has told me how those people were in my shoes at one point. So that encourages me that I'll be up with them one day. I definitely have progressed in my skills since I first started years ago. Thank you so much for your inspiring words, (especially the last one), and happy new year! 😊

Great video. Another way is to create a guardian at the gate of your mind, the subconscious is impressioned by whatever thoughts you entertain, so it's important to allow the conscious mind to analyse any thoughts that aren't useful to your growth as a person and not allow it in. To do this create a thought based on a moment you felt happy and positive, whenever you feel the negativity creep in, think about your positive thought because a negative and positive thought can't exist at the same time. It's work but it's a mental exercise that will help build a solid foundation in the mind, allowing your creative exercises to flow.

With number 9, I always know and focus on the fact that it's about the joy of creating something. But what you said, "something that no one else but you could have created." I feel like.. I forgot that aspect. For a while now I've been too focused on trying to appeal my work to others, I forgot (as weird as it may sound) that every work is unique to each person, and that my work is unique in its own right. I think I needed to hear this. My work doesn't need to be like others or cater. It can just be.
