  • Rallying has seen some of the greatest race-bred machines in history, and while a lot of these have gone on to carve themselves legendary and successful careers, there are a great many others out there that didn't quite reach that standard. Time to give them the spotlight for a change.

    As a southeast asian I'm glad to see Proton being mentioned in this vid. PERT stood for Petronas Eon Racing Team. PERT was rebranded to Proton R3 in 2003 but R3 has sadly met a similar fate to Mitsubishi's Ralliart having scaled down it's operations from 2017 onwards.
    R3 is still around but they now only compete in national championships. R3 also made special edition models of existing Proton vehicles with some of them having performance enhancements but their most recent models are just merely cosmetic enhancements.
    Proton is now half owned by Geely.
    Would love to see you do a video essay on Proton in rally!

    • @Scid34
      @Scid34 2 месяца назад +7

      A bit of a correction tho, PERT was directly under EON and they went defunct in 2007. They were completely separate from Proton Corp/R3. However the PERT team lead Datuk Abdul Razak Dawood did went on to R3 after leaving EON.

    The Pert wasn't Proton's 1st foray into the WRC. In fact, that would be their 2nd.
    Proton, as you mentioned, had ties to Mitsubishi and back in the late 90s whilst Mitsubishi was gaining success with the Evo V & VI, Proton saw what Mitsubishi was doing and thought "boleh la. If they can do it, why can't we" so they took a Wira which was basically a Evo I-III variant of the Lancer of that time, slap the Evo engine and AWD system into the chassis and send it off for WRC rounds. It did not win much but it did perform rather well. Well... Well enough for a totally unprepared team.
    In fact, Proton thought that they could keep up with the efforts before the Pert 2.0 (Yes, the Wira was also called the Pert so let's call the Evo VI variant "2.0") that they actually tried building a new WRC contender from scratch. They took a Putra chassis which essentially was a Evo III coupe, again slot in the 4G63T but this time send the car over to Prodrive to have them worked on and this was in 1998. However, for reasons unknown, Proton canned the project and the Putra WRC concept is still in storage in Malaysia with 2 being made either as prototype mocks or for testing. Regardless, Proton then received the Evo VI and made that into the Pert 2.0 which I guess was way cheaper for them to take a stock car and beat it around a rally rather than to make a whole new car for rallies being that Proton is a small company.
    That wasn't the end of Proton's rallying dream tho.
    Proton then went on and took the new Satria Neo, modified the hell out of it thru the Super 2000 guidelines, added AWD to the hatchback and slotted it into the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship. It wasn't WRC but it's still a major rally event in the region regardless and it was utterly amazing. Proton won the 2011 APRC title outright with Colin McRae's brother, Alister behind the wheel comfortably.

      @NERGYStudios 2 месяца назад +3

      Interesting! I think you are referring to the stock 6th gen Lancer saloon (basis for Wira, originally launched in 1991) rather than the Evo variant, and the Putra was essentially a 4th gen Mirage (basically the coupe variant of Lancer).

    Another rally car that I particularly find interesting no one tends to talk about... or rather ignore it is the Audi 200 Quattro for Group A. Like everyone praises Audi for changing the game completely for bringing AWD and all the glory it had in Group B but no one talks about what happened to them after Group B. They did compete in Group A but for a very short period. It's quite odd considering the huge impact they did few years prior.

      Yes, it was quite shocking how Audi left. Yes, the 200 was too big and heavy, but after only 3 rallies (and a single entry for Hannu Mikkola in Finland) they went so quietly without any press release or anything about their withdrawal. Soon it was forgotten the 200 ever existed and it seems that was exactly what Audi wanted. Still that is rather a shame if not even dirty after all the success they had before.

    i would add the k10 nissan march turbo and super turbo too, they ran basically from 1987-ish up to basically early 90's, still very obscure, they were not super competitive too, but were technically after the 240RS and a bit before the GTI-R

    Ok, some gems I'm finding with a lookover Wikipedia: Skoda and Lada being there in the 70s, along with Volvo. Skoda came back here and there with the Rapide/130R. VW were there for ages with the Golf MKI and MKii. Fiat had a podium with the Uno in '86! Surprised me too. And more than 3 cars finished! The MK3 Supra raced in the WRC. And was on the podium in Kenya in '87. BMW Rallies the M3. Renault Rallied the MK1 Clio. The Opel Calibra rallied! Skoda had some success in the late 90s with the Octavia, mostly in Kenya.
    I'm surprised how long VW rallied the Golfs.

    Hey Jackoh, love this series and your videos. Keep up the good work!
    Some suggestions for part 3: rally cars from Saab (primarly Saab 96 V4 and Saab 99 EMS), Volvo (primarly Volvo 142 and Volvo Amazon), BMW 2002Tii, Citroen DS21 and DS23, Jaguar (primarly Jaguar MkII, Jaguar XK120 and Jaguar E-Type, DAF 66, Seat 124D Especial 1800, Audi 50 GL and Coupe Quattro, Mercedes-Benz 450SLC, Hyundai Accent WRC and Mini John Cooper Works WRC.
    And if you really want to go deep and include prototypes and rumoured to be rally cars aswell you should take a look at Volkswagen Golf A59.
    Probably enough ideas there for part 3 and maybe 4 aswell 😂

      Malaysia's car based motorsport events were mainly reliant on support from Proton and Perodua since our government basically tried to pushed away foreign car brands, but then Proton and Perodua these days don't care about motorsports anymore and only care about slapping together a bunch of cars where most of them aren't really suitable any real racing and rallying, usually the problems are being too tall, some too heavy, some too long, some too unstable and some have gearbox that can't handle abuse from racing.

    Brilliant video. Strange I only saw it today despite being subscribed to the channel. To a couple of cars I wish to make remarks:
    Proton:
    The first Proton car was actually made from the Citroen AX, the Proton Tiara. And they first rallied the Wira aka Lancer Evo1-3 (and nationally the Iswara before that). As someone already mentioned it seems important and interesting what Pert actually means. It is the only car model name that is named after rallying. Pert is an abbreviation for Petronas Eon Rally Team.
    Citroen:
    The Visa was a brilliant budget rally car. And thanks for mentioning the Visa Lotus.
    On the BX 4TC that these cars were taken back and destroyed seems to be a mythos that keeps clinging on forever. I think some journalist reported that to simply show how bad the car was and it spread from there. But it is not true and many of the original road cars still exist today.
    And Citroen did not even cancel the WRC programm because the car was bad. What went completely under the radar is that Citroen also had a French program with it. The last rally was only 2 weeks before the FIA decided on the groupB ban and it was planned to carry on at least the French program while deveopping the car further for WRC. After Acropolis came the fly away events, so they never planned to compete in the WRC before San Remo anyway. But once the FIA decided on the groupB ban, there simply was no point investing into the car any longer.

    I remember going to the 2001 German WRC round with my father, and while I was a huge fanboy for Peter Solberg and the Subaru Team, I always liked the Seat Cordoba Evo. They looked cool and sounded like the, at the time, new Golf GTI, just actually fast.
    and I always thought they should've built a street-version of the Cordoba Evo, would've been THE coolest car in the VW lineup (but probably rivaling R32 Golf sales.)

    Amazing that you talked about the Silvia 240RS, and the Pulsar GTI-R, yet you forgot the Group A S12 Silvia/200SX. Sure it wasn't the best but it was known for being at the top or very near in the Ivory Coast and Safari Rallies. Nobody seems to remember that while the Citroën Xsara was the last 2 Wheel Drive car to win a WRC Event, the Nissan Silvia remains iirc, the last RWD car to win a WRC -event.
