    This isn't some cute "oh Bethesda, oh you!" moment, it's borderline malicious behavior, but I'm getting used to blatant contempt and disregard for fans and consumers from every company by now :)
    They release a forced, mandatory update, and have the brass balls to lock us out of the content for said update behind a paywall, while knowingly obliterating almost all mod compatibility. And all this for what? Some crappy "premium" trash mods from their scam club? Were they sitting around thinking "man we've sold the game so many times already, but how can we strongarm the people who already bought the game into paying up again?"
    What a bunch of absolute scumbags heading up management at Bethesda, just wow. All of their IPs would genuinely be better off in the public domain. But then again, that's true for most AAA games these days. Bunch of sociopathic corporate snakes running everything good into the ground in every form of media.

      Yeah, no other rational explanation than this. It's not even laziness at this point. It's all built on purpose, as an attempt to drain easy cash from an old playerbase. This game is 10 years old, it's time for them and investors to move on to something new already. Succeeding in it will be far more profitable than cow-milking Skyrim over and over again. But yeah, retarded managers and boomer decision-makers are short-sighted like in most companies nowadays I guess.

      But... But...
      If games are kept off the Internet, how are the gaming companies going to keep track of which games you buy, which games you're playing the most, which game you're playing *right* *now,* and which ads to show you to get you to buy more stuff than you normally would??
      Not to mention keeping track of your *achievements,* which is the *only* *thing* that makes you feel like you're acomplishing *anything!*

    Steam will then think Skyrim isn't installed at all (Make sure you right click and uninstall, so that you're left with only "install" as an option instead of play, feel free to download the vanilla game if you want) and you can now play two or more versions of Skyrim.

    They literally could have made anniversary edition separate executable and its own thing and let special edition be the same and not break the mods but they chose to do it this way, this is a big middle finger to all the people who won't use their shitty microtransactions.
    and I'm sick of people claiming Bethesda allows people to mod their games, They really don't. all the cool mods you see are Hacks. People had to literally hack the game through meticulous and timely code injections to make the mods work, Bethesda could have allowed greater ability to mod but they don't.
    I wish skse dev abandons skyrim and all the modders just quit, that would be a big middle finger to Bethesda.
    not only does the AE break mods, they include creation store mods that take up space for other mods, there is only limited amount of address space for mods and these get taken up by mods from the store apparently 500 mods from the store.

      @@KrogTharr well, for starts, anniversary edition comes in the form of an update for special edition. You could try disable updates in Steam. Second, the change in the code means that almost any mod built with that code would be turned obsolete. Even if Skse64 is updated to be compatible with the new code, modders would need to rebuilt their mods from scratch to work with it, and in most cases this simply isn't possible, since it takes A LOT of time and resources. In short, you want mods, then go for the paid mods of the Creation Club.

      They would never sell their fishing mod then, and doing it this way kills free mods. They hate anything in their game they can't get profit from. It's such bs and, makes me not even want to go through this bs again, when they finally do release es6. They probably lost so many loyal customers with this move. Granted, re-releasing a single game so many times in a decade is in itself, a huge sin, this was the straw that broke the camels back, for me personally. These companies don't realize that if they did things our way, we would happily hand them more* money, for the lifespan of Bethesda. There are a ton of people that still buy this game after the 50th release, but that will end soon. What if they happen to lose all of the money made off this title? (It is possible.) What then? They won't have as many people willing to give them a cent. They deserve to lose everything.

Still, I'm with you. I get that they are a business and need to maks money but i wish they would understand that their game has persisted so long only because of the modding communtiy which has operated non-profit/for free for so long. Instead of trying to alienate that they should find ways to support it and then focus on finishing their next games like ES6.

  • @henry770

    This is not being done to inconvenience you. Updating the compiler means that four years worth of enhancements and optimizations to C++ will be applied to the game, increasing its efficiency and performance, and potentially allowing it to utilize new CPU and GPU features as well. It also keeps Skyrim’s source in step with the programming language in which it is written, demonstrating BGS’s commitment to continue supporting it.
    What this update will break is literally unsupported to begin with. Replacing executable or library binaries is how these native code plugins have always worked. It is unreasonable to expect that Bethesda’s developers could or should survey the landscape of unofficially supported modifications of their game and tip toe around it. They have done the best that can be asked: not to deliberately and actively combat this kind of modding.
    And since this is always how this kind of modding has worked, it has always been incumbent upon mod authors to anticipate these kinds of changes and write software that is maintainable moving forward, in itself. There have been some good steps in this direction, but perhaps not enough if this is such an Earth-shattering event.
    My point is that the solution should not to simply be to “not move forward”. Perhaps, after this, modders will take even more steps to ensure their mods continuing utility, such as relying more on actively maintained abstraction layers and shims and open sourcing their projects to ensure they can be compiled and maintained by others in the future. We, as players, can try to encourage Bethesda to expand the scope of officially supported modification in future Elder Scrolls and Fallout single-player titles, doubling down on a strength in which they are already in the lead (see attempting to mod Rockstar titles for an example of how hard this can be without official tools like the Creation Kit). Constantly complaining when they dare to modernize their code base or attempt to devise incentive structures for them to support modding of games that are already becoming an endangered species (see the lawsuit against Valve in France concerning resale of DIGITAL goods) is not a recipe for success.

      @@tjep2670 Here are the facts you're ignoring:
      - Valve charges a publishing fee per game based on the expense to their CDN of distributing it, which is continuous because of updates and reinstallations. Should Bethesda just foot the bill for trying to give you a better experience?
      - As you aptly point out, there is already a version of Skyrim that very rarely, if ever, gets further servicing releases that you could already be playing to avoid this problem. Why aren't you still on OldRim if you're so sensitive to these kinds of things?
      - I'm guessing you like the fact that SkyrimSE runs in 64-bit and has some backported features from Fallout 4's Creation Engine (like off the shelf DOF) that you enjoy. Heaven forbid we have any more of that kind of thing.

    • @henry770
      @henry770 3 года назад

      @@tjep2670 You're so entitled. Just because Bethesda can continuously earn money by doing more work they should pay for you to continue to use their product in a way that they did not intend?
      What are you talking about? I have the original release of Skyrim in my Steam library and can install it right now. I happen to have SE installed because it's better, but you're just patently wrong on this point. I guess what you mean here is that you're entitled to purchase a product that its creator is no longer selling. Interesting.
      But you're NOT being asked to pay again for a game you've already bought. The anniversary edition's technical upgrades are coming to you absolutely free of charge. And, despite the inconvenience to you and hassle for the mod authors, they will figure their way through it and you'll have a working search box in your SkyUI running on top of a faster, more efficient, more stable version of Skyrim without being charged one red cent before you know it.
      I'd say "cry more", but your entitled trantrum does have a deleterious effect on the folks that are trying to extend the life of the game you like and make it better. I like that game, too. So please, for the benefit of those of us not suffering from cognitive dissonance on this issue, grow up.

    • @blargaruuulgh
      @blargaruuulgh 3 года назад

      The issue, at least how I see it, is that quite a few mod authors have quit the mod scene entirely with what's happening on the nexus now. this update won't be as bad as what happened to fallout 3, but it will be horrible for the modding scene for quite some time.
      it really should've been an opt-in thing, but now it's gonna cause another rift in the modding scene.
      I'm quite worried about any other games that Bethesda chooses to modernize though, fallout 3 is just plain screwed, and tale of two wastelands may be broken for new installs since they repacked the game with that update. it doesn't hurt active modders, but the amount of inactive authors will be a problem going forward.
      This update may not be made to inconvenience us, but it will, Bethesda is messing with their lifeline, and it may just be the straw that broke the camel's back, especially after 4 years of constant skse breaking updates and the recent strife at the nexus. Modding has kept a mediocre at best rpg(despite how much I love the game) alive for 10 years, a game older than Morrowind was when Skyrim came out. I see dark times ahead for any users of skse reliant mods, such as myself, and the game in general.

    The modding scene on console for SE wasnt the best with a lot of mods either crashing your system or just not working in general which is why most of the skyrim modding community is on PC. They shouldve made mods more compatible with consoles instead of just adding a mod browser and calling it a day. I get that skyrim is filled with a lot and i mean a lot of NSFW mods but there are genuinely good mods that creators put a lot of work into. Ive noticed that many mod creators will port their mods to console but never update them for it which i can understand since bethesda doesnt really make it easy and it is a pain to port mods to console in the first place. This just seems like bethesdas way of monetizing mods.
