  • It's finally finished! This was the longest time I've ever spent working on a video. I'm not used to doing so much editing and have learned a lot of lessons while trying to make this video. My future videos will more than likely be brought down to an average of 5-10 minutes. Allowing me to post more videos more often!
    Anyway, I hope you guys like it and learn something from my rambling! If you do please like and subscribe!

    Great video man thank you so much for this! That value approach sounds super interesting although you'd probably need to be super patient with it and get used to it. But the work definitely paid off dude I think the piece came out really nice! :)

    This is an awesome video!!! Thank you so much for sharing. One quick question: How did you blend that fast and smoothly? It doesn't look like you have the opacity on so how did you do that without opacity??? I find that having the opacity on quickly turns mu pictures muddy. Do you have a video that mentions your brush settings when it comes to blending the colors?

    • @ForrestImel
      @ForrestImel  9 лет назад +1

      +cshunter89 I usually have the "Transfer" setting checked on my main brushes that I paint with. That allows it to fade when I use less pen pressure on the tablet. I understand the muddy look you're talking about though. Usually the muddiness doesn't actually come from the brush strokes but from lack of balance with the images values or color. However, I'd need to see an example of an image you've been working on. Feel free to add me on Facebook and message or e-mail me one of your images and we can discuss more of that!

    Omg that's really funny. I moved from Canada to Spain the winter after graduating HS. I moved to Barcelona and went to the Barcelona Academy of Art. In the second year course-Digital Art-literally one week after you posted this, Dorian became a teacher at my school. Dorian is really great, he's a really kind guy and he knows what he's talking about. Another teacher was an alumni named David Mason, maybe check him out?

    Forrest, what are your thoughts on the importance of super-clean lineart before beginnning the rendering process?
    I tend to keep it loose, because otherwise I feel like things start losing their energy. (..if that makes sense)

    • @ForrestImel
      @ForrestImel  9 лет назад +2

      +Flowlen Thank you! I've been seriously studying for about 5 years now I want to say. There were some up and down times, but for the most part around 5 years. There are some people that only take 2 years to be waaaay better than me though. It all depends on how well you retain the information you're learning.

    How do you know when/where to lessen the saturation ? i get the value and the rest, but the red guy has a lot of gray ish or less saturated patches all over his body and for me its seems kinda random. i dont mean the low saturation parts, but the almost greenish-gray parts around his shoulders and so on...

    • @ForrestImel
      @ForrestImel  7 лет назад +2

      It all depends on the lighting scenario. This image isn't a perfect example but I can say what was going through my mind.
      Basically, there are three light sources: Sunlight, Ambient Light (Sky), and reflected light (Ground). So the least saturated levels will be the ambient light hitting the top planes of the character's body because red and blue sort of cancel each other out seeing as how they're complimentary colors. The highest saturation will be direct sunlight because it is a warm light and a warm base color mixing, making it extra warm. And the reflected light will be saturated, but not too much higher in value since it's not a direct light source.
      I hope this helps! Let me know if you have anymore questions!

    • @mukkimmajjomm
      @mukkimmajjomm 7 лет назад +1

      yes, i see, thanks that was actually pretty useful.
      so the only instance when gray or gray-greenish colors appear are when a color tone meets with a (complementary) light source and cancel ? or are there other instances ? i remember seeing grayish, desaturated greens on face paintings.. how does green get on the face ?

    • @ForrestImel
      @ForrestImel  7 лет назад

      Well there are other circumstances I'm sure, but that is one I know of. I'm not fantastic with color theory, but I recommend getting either James Gurney's Color and Light or Mike Azevedo's Gumroad Color tutorial. Both are great and totally worth it.
      As for the desaturation in faces, I've noticed it too, and someone could correct me on this if I'm wrong. But, a lot of artists use desaturation on the edges of objects turning in space to make the front facing planes of the object pop more by making them appear more saturated. If you look at a lot of old master paintings you'll notice this used everywhere. Usually it isn't ACTUALLY green, just a less saturated version of the base color.
