    I've heard from a lot of nice artists and whatnot to study. And so I will, but I'll just draw or paint the subject without THINKING. I just assume my brain will think for me. And it hasn't been working very well. After watching this video, now I know how to actually study. This was really helpful, thank you.

    Forrest, I just wanted to say thanks A TON for posting this. This made something "click" for me. I would look at game/fantasy art and just wonder why I couldn't come up with all those crazy clothing/armor designs out of my head. This sort of kicks the doors open on how to get all that info IN your head as an artist. There are very few pro digital painters on RUclips that actually talk about technique and explain things WHILE they work....please post more stuff like this. The art community needs more stuff like this!!!

    This video has been a huge eye opener for me. For the longest time I just blindly did studies of figures or other objects and never actually thought to take notes or think about WHY I was doing that particular study! I just grinded them out pose after pose, no one told me to do otherwise. I feel like while I made some improvement, I wasn't doing my studies smartly. Now though? I think after watching this and taking notes my art growth is going to be much better. Thank you for creating these videos, as soon as I have cash for it I'm gonna snag your beginners guide to art fundamentals!

    One of the things that I love about this channel is that every point that you make, you emphasize that all of the things that you are doing is all within a subjective process, which I don't see a lot of art channels do (at least the one's that I have seen)

    Awesome video and tips! It's so good to see more and more people clarifying all the how to study art stuff.
    One thing that I wonder is if you keep this studies in a organized form, so you can relate to them later, or you just do them in way that it'll stick for as long as possible (by taking notes, etc). Maybe using image tags (you may study more than one thing on the same image).
    I also wonder if for someone with really bad fundamentals (my example), where he/she has basically too much to tackle and too little knowledge to begin his own project, mixing your approach with books would be a better option (going trough the books, reading them, taking notes, copying from them, but then (and that I feel is the most important step, that some people forget) trying to create something from your mind from what you've just learned).

    Thank a lot man, recently I have been watching a lot of professionals talk about sutdying in this way and I can see it now.
    Very informative and useful but its sad to see that nobody sees things unless they see that it has over 9000 views.
    But at the same time, no offense to you, Im also happy that not many see this because then it'll mean more fruits for those who search and less for those who skim the surface and watch all those "tutorial" videos where its just someone painting and you have no idea whats going on.
    Yet people may enjoy that more than actually learning.
    Some are more into the idea of enjoying the thought of being an artist and watching art being done rather than putting in the work.
    Either way time for the 5000 we saw this to get in a workout.
    Im off to do mine.
    Thanks!

    I heard you talking about how they should have better things to do than sue someone. Ya completely agree. And we need to remember what Picasso said "good artists borrow, the best artists steal". I don't think taking an idea that works and using it for your own is stealing copy write material. They don't own a copy right on the mememic idea or your interpretation of it. They only own a specific image.

    • @ForrestImel
      @ForrestImel  10 лет назад

      Exactly, I don't see any harm in taking bits that you like from other designs and using them how you want, especially if it's as simple as some cloth on top of shoulder armor. People in the industry don't talk about it much but a lot of clients don't want your ideas, they want other peoples ideas but with a few tweaks, so it's nothing that people shouldn't get used to over time.

    • @novusvoss
      @novusvoss 10 лет назад

      Taking bits from other designs is a legal aswell as a moral greyarea. As always it's about the balance, how much do you copy, how important is the element in your piece etc. I think as long as someone isn't reducing his own worktime by copying other designs, but puts the same amount of work as usual and just enhances his own piece with it, it's fine. That's the moral part of it.
      As for the legal part you got to be very careful that you don't copy anything recognizeably that belongs to big IP's like Star Wars or Despicable Me or whatever. Because these giants have lawyers who's only job is to find people who copy the companys stuff and sue them big time. :p

    • @jaredsanford
      @jaredsanford 10 лет назад

      ***** Im not advocating the actual theivory of someones work for the purpose of plagerism, but no one owns a meme. And in this specific case in which he considered using a wolf's head plate armor, I doubt highly that the original artist owned the copy right to doodling a wolfs head. The point was clear enough when Picasso made the quote. Its about the usages, not the act.

    • @jaredsanford
      @jaredsanford 10 лет назад

      novusvoss I agree, but I think there is also a aborant fear among people not employed by the industry that if you nick an idea that your suddenly going to be pounced apon by lawyer agents of various entities. Again, Im not saying that you should rip off darth vaders helmet and claim it as your own, but no one owns "helmet". Its a matter of simply observing something interesting, knowing that it will enhance or amplify a design and allowing it to do so in your own way. There is a huge difference between simply stealing vaders helmet and photo smashing it onto a design, and looking at it and seeing the aesthetic value inherent in it.

    Really good video, very similar to my own approach, however you're slightly more thourough ^^
    I've got a tip regarding value studies that I find really helpful. If I'd paint f.e. a character, like as in your video, after having a finished design and some basic values I'll import a photo of similar subject matter and lightning scenario in black and white to use as a kind of value study/reminder that I can pop on and off as I paint. It can be tricky not to get too influenced by the picture but it's good for figuring out how to take your picture to the next step and also to analyze how light behaves on f.e. cloth and quickly compare it with the painting. Doing this is really helpful for figuring out what's making the values not really work.
    Anyway great video, I'll take a look at the others as well :)

  • @novusvoss
    @novusvoss 10 лет назад +2

    Hi Forrest, thanks for the video, it was very useful.
    From my personal experience aswell as what I've seen from many friends who study concept art, I'm not convinced that photo studys are very useful. A lot of my friends, me included, do a pretty realistic job on copying photos, but as soon as we do own work there's quite a difference in quality. I only refer to painting, because line drawing studys are simpler, the brain can really focus on learning the shapes. While painting however imo the brain is too focused on matching the painting with the photo instead of actually break down why the material has a certain look.
    I think you're still doing quite a good job 'cause you try to take some lessons from each study. But when you painted the hair for example, why don't you put the image of the blond girl right next to your painting and try to get the hair directly on your own character. That way you don't loose time doing a study first where you imho have to focus on two things at the same time: learning the material and matching a photo.

    • @ForrestImel
      @ForrestImel  10 лет назад +1

      I thought I talked about this a little bit in the video but maybe I didn't. If what you're doing when doing a photo study is trying to get it to look exactly like the original photo then you aren't going to learn anything. Don't think of a photo as a photo when studying it but as a material, as form, think of the values and the colors and the shapes it makes. If I had used hair as reference and just directly copied it then I would have learned nothing, or at least not as much. The reason I take the time off to do a study is because by having enough knowledge of a certain subject like form or color or value, you become more confident with it and don't quite have to do as many studies of it. The studies in this video were what I felt least comfortable with, therefore I studied them and instead of making them exact copies I simply tried to learn how metal texture works and how light reacts on it, or what features do tough looking women have, or what are the value levels of blonde hair, etc. etc. By knowing these things now I can then apply them to future images.
      Also, I've got all the time in the world, I'm didn't do this character just to get a character out as fast as possible, I did it to learn as much as possible before I move on to something else.
      Hope that makes sense :)

    • @novusvoss
      @novusvoss 10 лет назад

      I think it's kinda pointless to explain myself since you're going in the right direction anyway. :)
      What I ment tho by putting the reference directly next to your work is not to simply copy the content but you can directly check if your work has the same feel as the reference. It's the same learning process like doing a study first, you simply skip the part of painting a separate image and practice direclty on your work.
      But whatever, there's surely no right or wrong in this field, so keep doing that awesome work!

    • @ForrestImel
      @ForrestImel  9 лет назад +3

      Daniel Ravits Hey Daniel, you make a good point. I remember I was frustrated in the beginning when trying to figure out how to get better or what to do, what books to get, etc. So I'll try and make a video series based on starting out for new artists.
      For now I can tell you that you should decide what kind of art you want to get into, what kind you like to do. Concept art, illustration, portraits, stuff like that. Decide what really inspires you and then study things related to that field. I think a great book to invest in no matter your field would be "Creative Illustration" by Andrew Loomis. It covers a huge amount of the fundamentals. Read through the book and draw a lot, keeping in mind what you read from it. Hope I could help, let me know if you have any other questions :)
