Definitely agree on the pajama pants. When I was in school, at about 12 years old I think, my class took Home Economics (which taught you things like cooking & managing finances, etc) and one of the sections covered learning how to sew. We all, boys and girls, learned how a sewing machine worked, picked out fabric, and then all made really cozy flannel pajama pants. Years later, when I got a sewing machine as a gift, I could think back on that experience and feel a bit more confident about what I was doing.
Thanks for this Ruby. Really appreciate it. Memories like that make you love sewing. Sadly most teens and beginners I talk to have horrid stories of sewing at school and it's put them off. I'm on a mission to make sewing fun again! :D
One of the best recommendations I have is for people who have never sewn before is to go to Simplicity's JIFFY PATTERNS.....Simplicity has come back out with these Jiffy Patterns and they are really easy for the beginner. When I began sewing however, my MIL taught me how to sew over the phone actually ( we lived in a different state when my DH was going to college ) . She recommended that I chose a pattern with 2-3 pcs...and also use cheap fabric ( muslin too ) and when I became more comfortable with a pattern, go on to another pattern, ( make sure to add a piece or two ) and keep going. It's been 40 plus years and I can honestly say I am an excellent seamstress.....I have made wedding gowns, prom dresses etc...... You videos are really good......I think more people need videos like this ! Thanks so much for doing what you do ! :)
i remember taking home ec and the sewing portion we made pillows and clothing, and i modeled my skirt it was white and yellow with slits on the side. i wish i had kept up with it.
ms keisha make the first Simplicity pattern. I have been making the Jammie shorts for 10 years. Very inexpensive to make, tons of cute cottons, thread and elastic!
I appreciate how you mentioned to start out with sewing pajamas. Great idea. The way that you described that you learned dress making, then were away from it for awhile, then returned to dress making shows that we can all be beginners, again and again.
Thank you. And yes, it doesn't matter if you've dabble here and there or think you've forgotten. We all have to start somewhere. Also sometimes I feel like a beginner with a difficult pattern- it's about powering through and slowly working things out. :) x
I'm new to sewing and NOT a "confident beginner". I used the Simplicity 8656 pattern that I purchased from Joann's and it is so simple to make! Another good one for your beginner stash! ❤
I agree with using cheap AF fabric for first-try on new patterns. I find it actually takes 3-4 times to really perfect a new pattern/project. You can use the first few times ("prototypes") to (1) learn what mistakes to avoid (2) learn ways to do things simpler and (3) add your own personal touches. :)
First off I think your lovely and love the pineapple blouse you have on.Thank you for the wonderful videos I'am in my 50's and could only sew pillows curtains and aprons and things but never wanted to sew clothing because I always thought it was very hard to read the patterens.I have a 1963 chevy nova car all original and I want to make a few pieces of clothing to wear when Iam in my car.I thought that would be cool. The way you explained everything no wonder you teach sewing classes your a doll and very good at explaining things I wish you were my neighbor thank you and God Bless 🙏💜
Some stretch fabrics do fray I using a lot of stretch knits in the future as I am making a Latin American mens dance shirt as a trail piece for my dream job with the company who makes the costumes for strictly come dancing and dancing on Ice and all the tours. Plus stage and screen and competition dance wear for children and adults. Giovanni and Rose inspired me to try and I'm doing well. And I've made a wonderful new friend who happens to be one of the managing directors of the company DSI LONDON.. I'm disabled from birth and it really doesn't matter what level your sewing experience is just try. I'm also a qualified couture fashion designer and pattern cutter. But I love simple beginners patterns as once you've got the hang of them you can learn to alter them to make whatever you want your only barrier is your imagination. Thanks for the brilliant video
I just made pajama pants with my mom (who has sewn for 60 years) and she led me step by step and I learned sew much! Haha get it?! But seriously they’re easy but challenging enough without being too hard. They’re also super comfortable and they’re something you WANT to wear. Previously I made a really difficult blouse and a dress and can now see why I struggled so much.
Aww how nice though that you made something useful and you made it well. It's easy to dive straight in to 'big projects' before you're ready and then have your confidence knocked. I'm sure now you feel ready and prepared for your next challenge! Happy Sewing! x
I’m just getting started at 34, my grandmother was a seamstress and I’m motivated to honor her and create the clothes made out of material that I want! And eventually can make my own tailored clothes!! Happy to came across this video!!
Thank you for this video! And I love your pineapple blouse too! I was also forced to sew in home economics in the late 70's early 80's. It wasn't a traumatic experience but I didn't continue with any sewing until just now almost 40 years later! I bought a sewing machine about 2 months ago and am trying hand at some curtains and easy things like placemats and coasters. After just a short bit I feel so compelled to try to make some clothing for myself! I just hope I have the patience to keep on with it. I think I'm learning that sewing is a lot like painting (and many other things) it is all in the prep work! And if I allow enough time for that and don't get to the point of 'too tired' I'll do OK! I look forward to the day to wear my own creations!
Love this, good for you Lisa. Yes I always try and cut everything out in one session, then sew it in another. So if you have a few garments to make. Cut them all out in a couple sessions. Then when you next have time you can just dive right into the sewing bits. :) x
I loved this video so much when I first started sewing. You should totally do an updated version of it. Or even better your all time favourite patterns / makes. Love your channel
Like you Jessalli , I have been sewing my entire life and there is much I take for granted, but I like the question on what to recommend to the newbie. A wrap skirt or just an elasticized waist skirt made with a stable knit, like Ponte, Liverpool, or bullet can make such a cute outfit.i threw one together from a random pattern I had , a slight A line just above the knee, and found myself wearing it more than my shorts this last summer.i felt a little more stylish going to the grocery store as well. Talk about dress it.up or down. Also instead of,making knit dresses, I almost always make a skirt with a top made of the bodice extended. That way I have a dress and a top. I make a tie belt or store bought, it depends. I also find it to be more flattering figure wise. Tips for sewing with knits: pull back your threads and set your needle down every time. Just make it a habit. If your machine still wants to eat your shirt you are making, slip some tissue paper under the fabric before you set down the presser foot. Oh and ever so gently adjust the presser foot pressures. Look in your machines manual to find out how. You should see a major improvement. Enjoy your projects and makes!
I am just starting..and so glad I found your channel. I am a tad nervous but very excited to start sewing. I will definitely be following you. Thank you
Thank you Kris, if there's anything in particular you'd like help on or want me to do a video on, let me know. And good luck, I promise you it gets so much easier when you've had a go! :)
Really useful, thank you! Have just got a new sewing machine and count myself a beginner though have made curtains etc in the past, bit nervous of making clothes and of my new machine (!) though have made a couple of things for my baby granddaughter, will definitely have a go at pajamas for myself.
What a lovely idea for a video: Well done! The rest of my comment is my own silly “rant,” feel free to ignore it. In my opinion, the multi-multi-size “unisex” patterns printed on ultra-thin paper are so annoying. First, I have a terrible time throwing away extra, unused pattern pieces, so they clog up the drawers and boxes in my sewing area - but that’s all my own fault as a “sewing hoarder.” Second, unless you wear an A to small B bust cup, “unisex” tops don’t fit at all. Nowadays, I have learnt multiple ways of making a full-bust adjustment, so it doesn’t matter, but for a beginner it would be a nightmare. Better to stick with simple skirts, pyjama bottoms or shorts at first. Third, the multi-multi-size patterns are printed on such thin paper that they are a misery to work with. If I find I like a pattern, I have to tape the now-shredded bits onto thicker paper to ever use it again. I remember being able to buy patterns with 3 dress sizes printed on them. I could buy a dress pattern with sizes 12-14-16 printed on it, and the paper was thicker. Those were great. Any sewist whose top and bottom are two full sizes apart might agree. (16 on top, 12 on the bottom.....if it fit my top, it was the size of a tent below, lol.)
Haha thanks Tina, I know what you mean about keeping the scrap paper. Never had a problem with bust size but I'm not gifted in that area haha. Thanks for watching though! :) x
Sooooo... imagine you sewed when you were younger and you return to it as a mature adult. You cut out your fabric and it’s slippery and see through so you try to put in a lining! Seemed simple. However after I laid out the pattern pieces I put the bodice together incorrectly. It’s impossible for me to explain here what I did, but I MIGHT be able to rescue it. Word of advice. Even if you think you know how to sew don’t bite off more than you can chew LOL. I was making a simplicity pattern number K9010. Looks pretty straight forward. Adding the lining is what got me all twisted.
I totally get this. And it happens to so many people. Well done you for pushing on through, and I'm sure you can work it out. But if it gets overwhelming, make something else, keep it simple, then come back to it. Thank you for sharing. x
I just did a bunny pillow DIY on my channel and should have come over here and watched this first! I am definitely a beginner, but this helped me learn a few tricks. 💕🍰Maria
Please hold patterns steady in front of camera so we get a good look, and repeat pattern number a couple times. Also nice to see back view drawings of these patterns!
Thank you so much that was so helpful I am truly a beginner first time only thing I have made was some pajamas I have not did I sure yet but thank you so much very helpful
I love, love your pineapple top and will get that pattern. I have shoulders similar to yours in that they slope down and wondered if you made any adjustments to the pattern in that area or if they fit without adjustment. Thanks for sharing.
More of these videos please! 😍 You could definitely make like level 1 patterns, level 2 patterns.. Etc... All the way to level 10 (which would probably be a full on Victorian gown.. Haha) Anyways! More more more!
They're my fave! The Agnes is amazing! The Agnes top is great for your pattern collection, so versatile. You can have a look at a little Agnes post I did here: www.jessalliblog.com/2016/10/my-agnes.html :)
Hi, I recently subscribed to your channel (and I’ve become a little addicted!). I just started dressmaking after spending a year teaching myself to quilt. I’m currently 13 weeks pregnant and so would love to make some maternity clothes for myself but a lot of the patterns I’ve seen look quite complicated for a beginner. I’ve bought the maternity package from Tilly and the buttons which was really easy to follow and I’m going to make a range of them in colours/patterns but I wondered if you could give me any advice on where else to look for maternity patterns for beginners. Thank you for all of your videos they really inspire me!
Thank you Regan that's so sweet! And congratulations!! Have you looked at Megan Neilsen patterns? She does maternity wear, and although I've not made any, her diagrams and instructions are very clear to follow. Good luck!! :)
The Coco is a printed pattern by Tilly and the Buttons. Depending on where you are in the world, you can buy it in a lot of haberdasheries. Or you can buy it directly from 'Tilly and the Buttons' site.
Thank you for this video I am getting back into sewing after 25 years. May you please tell me a pattern packet to buy I would like to make shorts, and trousers and shirts for my 11 year old son. Do you know of any easy patterns for I am starting over with sewing. Thank you in advance. Blessings to you sister :-)
Hi Violet! Try Simplicity patterns for good easy boys clothes. Just make sure you're buying the 'EASY' ones or you may end up with a complicated pattern. Also Oliver+S do really cute patterns for kids, but not sure what size they go up to. Good luck! :)
Umm well a Sewing Machine is probably the first thing, unless you can borrow someone else's? I'd get some scraps of fabric and just play with the machine before diving straight into making a pattern. :)
Hi, I love your channel. I just found it and I'm excited to try one of your sew alongs. I wanted to ask a question about patterns as I don't have much exsperience with them. Have you found the sizing ok on McCalls patterns? I made a garment recently and it was the biggest size and it was absolutely tiny. But it said the pattern did size 8 - 14. I couldn't work out if it was meant to be UK or US sizing (it didn't say). If you have any exsperience in this I would be very grateful. (or anyone else reading the comments) Thanks!
Hi Rebecca, Sizing on every pattern is different. The best thing you can do is look at the measurements for each size and circle the one that fits best to you - bust, waist, hip etc. If your sizes go over two sizes you can either mix the two or go for the larger option. I have done a video on how to measure yourself - I think this might help you. :)
Could you show how to make a shirt please because i have noo idea how to like sew things and make things i know how to use a sewing machine but i dont know how to make anything so please do that it would mean the world to me thxs
Any top...split the fabric down the centre (on pattern front) up to 'underbust'. Then add a triangle piece of fabric or a box pleat. Ps I hope your pregnancy is going well!
I've listed them all in the description, just search for them online as I don't know what country you're from or the easiest place for you to purchase them from. You can buy them all from hundreds of online shops.
I'd have a search for the Burda pattern online. Pretty sure I got mine from jaycotts.co.uk - And you can get all Tilly patterns from her website: shop.tillyandthebuttons.com/ :)
Thank you for all the different patterns, I'm a little heavy in the waist area, would love to make the one dress pattern's. All I've been familiar with is McCall's and Simplicity. Wonder if you could recommend other patters , thank you in advance
Diana Grupczynski The Tilly and the Buttons Coco is a great loose fitting shape that looks great on every shape. The Cocoon Dress you'd also like from Simple Sew. Let me know if that's a rough style of dress you like? 😊
It would be helpful to list the names of the pattern lines in the comments as the writing is too small to see, I was doing a lot of google-guessing to find them. Great video idea -- thanks!
Jesus loves you all no matter what Jesus Christ is king my savior my everything Jesus is coming soon and you better be ready amen 🙏 Praise the Lord Jesus Christ Amen God is good God is great there is nothing God cannot do
Florence Van Der Meer I am a total beginner and I made the coco dress it was really easy to make mine turned out great I love it and i have bought some more fabric to make a second one x

, I have been sewing my entire life and there is much I take for granted, but I like the question on what to recommend to the newbie.

They're my fave! The Agnes is amazing! The Agnes top is great for your pattern collection, so versatile. You can have a look at a little Agnes post I did here: www.jessalliblog.com/2016/10/my-agnes.html :)
NaturalDane me too. I'm at the knitting and stitching show tomorrow, so I think I may purchase it there and maybe the coco.

Good luck!! :)
JessalliHandmade thank you! I'll definitely try there ☺️
Very helpful. I am done with patterns from the big box store. Results are so hit and miss-lots of wasted money. Will be switching to indie patterns.
Indie Patterns are the best!! Haha. x
Thanks🌷 for doing this video ! Always wanted to sew clothes ! I have sewn many things around the house , but not clothes 😊
Yey! I'm glad I could help! :) x
Love this blog, really informative, thank you.
Thank you Elizabeth! :)
Can you make pj pants like into beach pants ?
Of course you can! Just make them in a nicer fabric like linen. x
@@Jessalli oh thanks ok I wanted pants like this for going out
Where do you by the Coco book please? As my friends daughter wants to get into sewing, thanks
The Coco is a printed pattern by Tilly and the Buttons. Depending on where you are in the world, you can buy it in a lot of haberdasheries. Or you can buy it directly from 'Tilly and the Buttons' site.
@@Jessalli thank you♥️♥️♥️
Love your pretty blouse! What is the pattern please?
Pattern number in the description. x
Misplaced instructions kwiksew 3500 a child's party dress. Do you know where to find them?
So sorry no, have you just tried searching online?x
Are Tilly and the Buttons patterns tissue paper or Pdf? I am curious. Thank you.
Both! You can order either, and thankfully the paper patterns are high quality paper, not tissue. x

Good luck! :)
JessalliHandmade Okay, thank you so much. I will do that. Blessings to you sister :-)
Do you have any suggestions for adult male patterns? Burda has a few but not many. I love your shirt!
thank you, great for my daughter......beginner
Pleasure Chelsea. Wishing her luck with her sewing adventures!
what do I buy to start learning how to sow. machine? patterns? material?
Ok thanks for your advice!
Also worth noting, the pattern sizes don’t correlate to the sizes of ready made store bought clothes. I find I need a much larger size in patterns.
i just got a sewing machine for christmas and a bit stuck on ideas of what to make. can you give some suggestions 😂🥰?
Any of these patterns mentioned, cushion, drawstring bag, tote bag.... endless possibilities. x
Thanks!
No problem! x

Ebay
Hello, do you have any suggestions for maternity clothes?
HI Wanda, Tilly and the Buttons have developed some maternity versions of their patterns you will find useful. Go direct to their website. :) x
Any top...split the fabric down the centre (on pattern front) up to 'underbust'. Then add a triangle piece of fabric or a box pleat. Ps I hope your pregnancy is going well!
Did you make that shirt because it is GORGEOUS!!
Hi Alyssa, Thank you!! Yes I did, it's a McCalls Blouse pattern with loads of different sleeves. :)
where can i buy that patterns guide? im from philippines
Hi Jade, I'm sure a lot of the brands you can get delivered internationally. You should be able to buy them all online. Good luck! :)
Can you give me the web for these patterns so I can order through net thanks a lot
I've listed them all in the description, just search for them online as I don't know what country you're from or the easiest place for you to purchase them from. You can buy them all from hundreds of online shops.
Great tutorial. Thank you. How can I get those patterns especially the coco T shirt and burda patterns.
Florence
I'd have a search for the Burda pattern online. Pretty sure I got mine from jaycotts.co.uk - And you can get all Tilly patterns from her website: shop.tillyandthebuttons.com/ :)
great video :)
Thank you! :)
Do they sell tilly and the buttons in the states?
I'm not sure, but you can buy her patterns as pdf and just print them yourself? :) x

WHERE CAN THAT COCO PATTERN BE BOUGHT.??
Thank you
Thank you for all the different patterns, I'm a little heavy in the waist area, would love to make the one dress pattern's.
Where I can get patterns
It would be helpful to list the names of the pattern lines in the comments as the writing is too small to see, I was doing a lot of google-guessing to find them. Great video idea -- thanks!
Hi Barb, Thank you. I've now listed the patterns in the description! Hope that helps! :)
Thanks!
Hard to see the patterns... seeing the examples on you or if you had held the pattern up close and still for awhile would have been good thanks
Sorry Trish! Maybe next time! x
Oops! Just saw your blouse description in the notes.
Haha no worries! x
You look just like my sister but with an English accent!

How i can buy patterns 8:53
1234 Hi! You can order from the pattern houses directly. The one at 8.53 is Megan Neilsen Briar Tee. 😊
Do you mean Megan Neilsen Briar Tee. link? megannielsen.com/
Sorry, I only understand a little English.
Thank you very much for the advice.
1234 Yes that’s right! You can search for it on the internet to see if you have a local supplier ? 😊
Thank you very much
The Coco pattern says "for confident beginners".
Florence Van Der Meer I am a total beginner and I made the coco dress it was really easy to make mine turned out great I love it and i have bought some more fabric to make a second one x
Hold the pattern still so we can see it. Flapping the pattern around is not helpful.
Thanks for your constructive comment Judy.
This is the most important basic thing girls need to know in my point of view.. Yeah, how to sewing
And boys. Men should be making and fixing their own clothes too. 😊
JessalliHandmade of course i know how to fixing with hand sew,not machine. but not quite a lot knowledgeable like dress maker 😁
Where do i buy this patterns?
Which one? Easiest way is to search for the ones you want online :)
