    If you are a total newbie sewer like me keep in mind a few things when making the tote shown in the video. When folding the piece of fabric make sure you are folding with the wrong side facing outwards. And it stays that way until the very end. When you go to make the 1.5 inch cuts you are cutting parallel to the fold, this was not mentioned in the video.

    My mom has 3 sewing machines. One of them is modern and has all sorts of features to it. One belonged to my grandmother and hasn’t been used for more than a decade. The last was purchased recently for the desk it came in for $15. In doing that, we accidentally ended up with the beloved Singer Touch and sew. We didn’t even know what it was till we looked it up. That got me interested, and I pulled out my grandmothers old machine, which is also mounted inside a much smaller desk. It’s a Singer 5107, and I’m a drive belt and bobbin winder tire away from having it completely cleaned, oiled and functional. I’ve adjusted the tension on the bobbin and gotten it stitching properly just hand cranking it and I’m very excited to try it out on a real project! So far this whacky journey has lead me here where I’ll fuel my mini obsession till the new parts arrive 😆 The machines themselves fascinate me, but what you can do with them is just as fascinating.
    I haven’t had a place to share my excitement, so I figured why not here.

      there are threading videos on you tube look up by brand name and model, I would also download the manual from the website. I had this machine. I woukd strongly suggest testing it a bunch before useing nice fabric. I woukd start with muslin / or woven fabric, start with a different color of thread for the top and for bobbin so you know which area problem is coming from when you test if there is an issue.

    Sooo helpful for a beginner! Thank you so much! Now I'm looking for buy sewing machine. And I have some questions, maybe you can answer it. I’m wondering if there better to choose sewing machine were I can choose speed mode (using speed button)? Because not all sewing machines have a speed button. For example, the Janome 2212 does not have, but the Janome M30A has (I think about this model).💡🙄

    • @RooneySewingPatterns
      @RooneySewingPatterns  2 года назад +5

      Hey, that's a great question! I think that is personal preference... but being able to control speed is a great tool if you are a beginner and want to keep it slow at first. I keep my speed at the highest level now but any time I work with a beginner we take it to the lowest speed. If you have the option and access to buy the one where you can choose the speed, I'd recommend that!

    I’m not a raw beginner. But I’m making a tote and the fabric is miserable. It’s falling to pieces just with my cuts - the metallic thread is breaking off in bits and the polyester fibers are too coarse. Lesson learned, pick a fabric that’s sturdy and tightly woven, not a shiny pretty fabric with a very loose weave.

    • @RooneySewingPatterns
      @RooneySewingPatterns  3 года назад

      Hey Alison! I can’t speak to this specifically since I don’t have these machines but I have heard great things about the 4423 which is why I included it here. I found this article that compares the two and says the main difference is speed and how fast the 4423 is for stitching. This definitely isn’t a problem when you’re starting out but I imagine you want your machine to last you a while and later down the road you may want to go faster. Here’s the article to see the comparison: houseofmeggs.com/singer-44s-vs-4423/
      :)

    • @RooneySewingPatterns
      @RooneySewingPatterns  Год назад

      I tried to pare down my list, but I can see how this can still seem like a long list! I always recommend asking friends and family if they have any tools to help you get started and always look secondhand and use what you have to begin.

    • @lemon862
      @lemon862 Год назад +1

      I think the list is actually pretty simple and manageable. Very basic sewing supplies plus a straight edge and rotary cutter which are both optional- they’d just make the project easier. A good pair of scissors might set you back $20-30 dollars but like she said in the video, it’s an investment as they’ll last you years. Aside from that nothing here is expensive except for the iron if you don’t already have one
