- Lo! Dragons. My review of the Canon RF 28-70 F2 L USM Lens with the Canon EOS R6 is here. This review is coming from the perspective of a hybrid wedding photo and video shooter. This review focuses more on "real world" functionality, less on technical attributes. I've used this lens for over 2.5 months at the time of publishing this video. It is as they say...the lens of lenses. However, not any mere mortal wields Excalibur. You're heart and mind must be true and strong to wield such a weapon of light. My experience with the 28-70 lens and R6 IBIS, autofocus, versatility, and wield-ability, for hybrid weddings (so both photo and video,) is a positive and epic experience across the board. I do find that for me it is vital to use the SpiderPro Dual Camera Holster to manage the weight. Consider this, Excalibur is worn around the waist, not dangling from straps.

Thanks Daniel, im very grateful to have this lens so early on in my career and to not be in the place of always wondering whether or not to try it. Now I'll be very informed if I decide to move to a different setup. I'm definitely not "attached" to it, nor do I take a stance that I'd never use something else. I do think it is an absolute marvel of engineering though. I imagine I will use it for a long time to go, perhaps off and on with primes from time to time.
your slackline game is insane bruh... I just tried hybrid shooting for the first time last weekend at a wedding with the same setup you now have, R5 & R6, and I'm not saying no to video anymore, the R5 makes it so much easier to shoot both. Great video!

Definitely on my list for next year! I moved from the 5D Mk4 to the EOS R and now the EOS R5 bodies and I'm all in on RF lenses from now on.

Thanks for your input and your channel. I got the R5 with the 70-200 (the lens that got me into the R. Then I sold my Sony and got the RF 85DS. Just traded my R and 24-70 RF for the 100-500. Just ordered the R6 as a backup. My next lens in the future might be the 28-70. Thanks for your review!

love a good hype video for a new piece of gear, especially a camera body or lens. I just shot 2 weddings this weekend 12-14 hours each and was using the R5 + RF 28-70 F2 and R6 + RF 70-200 F2.8 on a spider pro dual camera holster belt and felt fucking amazing. It definitely takes some getting used to, but once you are, there really isn't a better option for versatility. And because I shoot both photo and video at weddings, versatility in focal range and aperture is literally the most important thing. Especially when I want to limit how much lightning gear I use, that F2 aperture is king. Congrats on getting the lens, enjoy.

Its the sharpest lens I ever use with buttery bokeh and that magical 3D look and I have nothing bad to say about but I need more versatility, so After checking out your video sold me on the 28-70 f2. I just got the rf 50 1.2 and now I’m going to return it. I feel like I can create a lot more with the 28-70 f2. I really hope I love this lens just as much as I loved the rf 50 1.2

Hello! Do you have any comments on the autofocus motor and the noise it produces? Stuck between this and the 24-70 since that one has a nano USM and is nearly silent. Just hoping to hear your thoughts on the crackling from the AF adjustments!

Great video. I went with the rf 85 1.2 which I love. But every time I see a video about this lens I always wonder if I made the right choice. Either way I hope I have this sleds within the next few months as long as I can shoot my scheduled events.
Im certainly an advocate of the 85 1.2. I would have to pose the question asking what your intended use case for the 28-70 would be. Perhaps that is the easiest way to understand the best choice. Again for me, hybrid weddings demands versatility. Not to say I couldn't shoot an entire wedding on 1 or 2 primes, Im just currently experimenting with zoom for efficiency and optimal framing. Marcus they are two different lenses and they serve for different purposes. Now if you got the 28-70, 85, and 70-200 f4 I think you are done and to complete 15-35 then you covered everything under the sun with L glass.
I see that you're using the R5 with a battery grip, along with the 28-70 lens. Do you find that the battery grip makes it easier to handle the 28-70's weight? Seeing how it does add to the already very large weight total.
Secondly, I see you're using the SpiderPro system on it. Does the bracket being there on the grip bottom mean that you effectively cannot utilize the portrait grip functionality of the battery grip? Or is the bracket plate being there no issue for holding it in portrait mode?

the battery grip does make it a more balanced kit however I find that im always supporting the lens with my left hand anyway so its not an actual benefit to use the grip. the only time I see myself using the grip is for either long form video content or adventures where I dont want to open the battery door in harsh climates. a single batter lasts such a long time and its so easy to swap a single battery at a tactical point during a wedding day for me that I can't justify the extra 1.5 lbs using the grip.
the spider pro bracket is low profile enough where u can still use the portrait mode, albeit its not as perfect of a grip but its not an issue for me

To your "why": I kind of disagree, as someone who owned the EF24-105L IS II. The RF28-70 will be my always-on lens (if it finally ships... waiting since early february) for snapshots in house of my cats and also for travelling. Right now I'm switching between the EF 16-35 II and the EF 70-200 II, the second of which has the same weight but is longer.
I have strong gear acquisition syndrome, hope it stops after this one. Although the 100-500 is looking mighty fine as well...
I can definitely understand where youre coming from, id love to hear more about your experience once you get the lens. I still absolutely love it and do feel as though im always equipped to produce the highest quality images, so its worth its weight in gold in that regard. thanks for the comment Julius, enjoy the lens when it comes!

good catch! Whole Foods is a true blessing, I eat 90% healthy and from Whole Foods, definitely the most cost effective way to live, in comparison to eating out at restaurants all the time. Helps me to afford this kind of lens too lol ;) Organic rice, beans, chicken, salmon, broccoli are some staples. Thanks for watching Kristioff!
Thanks for your videos Samuel, your saying the stability on the 28-70 is better than the 24-70 2.8 rf with the extra stops of image stabilisation?
I'm not sure I could really say that it is "better", but it is certainly excellent when paired with the R5 or R6. I would only choose the 28-70 over the 24-70 if you know you are going to want/need the wider aperture.
I would probably claim them to be about equal in regards to their stabilization.

Very Nice info, I would typically Shoot a wedding with an R and 6d as second. Last time i hired the R5, and most of the time shot with a 35mm Art and 85mm Art lens.
Sometimes i would take out the the 24-105 F4L and a bit more often the 70-200 F4L.
But now i want to buy the R5 with 28-70mm with battery grip.
With this in regard. Im at the same choice (like other here )of buying a decent strap, i like peak design they also have the clip. But fancy the Spider alot. Not sure if a battery grip works out great during a wedding shoot. I always had a Joby sling strap.
Hard to test it out with a covid lockdown here in the Netherlands
id say how long your going to carry the camera and which lens you choose will determine the best fit. I have some of the peak design straps and they are great but I prefer to keep the weight off my back for weddings so Im using the spider pro holster. the only downside to the belt is that the camera is not tethered to you so its possible to drop it.

Hah! I recognize my neighborhood at the Domain! :) do you think the 28-70 would be unwieldy as a travel lens? I went on a hiking trip with a R5 + RF 15-35 + RF 70-200 recently, and kind of missed the middle range a bit (and found it annoying to switch lenses mid hike). I'm considering replacing or supplementing with either RF 28-70 or RF 24-70 IS or RF 50 1.2. I use a peak design capture clip on my backpack strap and worry that an R5 + 28-70 attached would get sore after a while. Thoughts?

Hey Will, love hearing from a local! Thanks for commenting. I would not typically recommend this lens for travel. I'd be much more inclined to recommend the RF 24-105 F4 above all else in fact. The 24-70 f2.8 or 50 1.2 are great as well. I would also consider if you truly need the large aperture or if you could use a lens like the RF 50 1.8, 35mm 1.8, 85mm f2, or even a 24-105 F4-7.1. If you think you'll be doing a lot of low light / night creation then lean closer to the f2.8 or brighter, but if its all going to done during the daytime definitely consider the 24-105 f4 or one of the other ultralight lenses. For a hiking trip, I imagine its during the day so I would for sure recommend the rf 24-105 f4 as your one and only lens. All of this said, sometimes in life we must act simply for the novelty, for the pleasure and curiosity of things. The 28-70 can be this, it is a remarkable specimen indeed. For many, it seems this novelty wears off quickly due to its weight and size however, so enter at your own risk!
My buyers intent for this lens was to have a lens similar to multiple primes that I could shoot both photo and video with at weddings specifically. I carry a 70-200 on my left side in addition to this lens, using the spider pro camera holster belt. I am definitely used to wearing them for 8 hours+ at a time and currently LOVE using the 2 lenses together.
I’m thinking to get 50 1.2 lens to compliment my 15-35 f2.8 lens together ,on the long end with 100-500 lens
My R5 with non-is lenses show sensor wobble even at 35mm just panning. Didnt see sensor wobble on the RF lenses with IS. Does this show sensor wobble at 28mm?
Hey TJ, thanks for the question. I have noticed an occasional sensor wobble at the wider end (using my R6 + 28-70) but it has been very few and far between instances. Basically not enough to deter me from using it. Seems the R6 and R5 may share a similar problem currently. It also sounds like you may want to stick to RF stabilized lenses. A good enough reason to save up and buy some new RF gear :)

I use the RF 15-35. I'll get the 28-70 down the road. Have you noticed the R6 AF going in and out as the camera warms up? I'm guessing that's what it is. I had some unusable footage. I had an (A) choice and (B) choice for a commercial shoot. Had to run with the first one because I didn't notice the AF issues as I was shooting and didn't really look because the earlier stuff was cherry.

I love that lens. I went rf crazy when I picked up the R5 and R6. I rarely pick up the R6 however since I like to pixel peep. Like you I only bought one more lens after I picked up the 28-70 which was the 35mm because I wanted to do video with a lighter lens.
The 35 is great, I had it long before I got the 28-70. Yesterday I tried out the new rf 50 1.8 and it felt liberating lol. Might have to pick that one up for the times when Im just not feeling the weight. It'd also make a great video lens, assuming your stabilized, which in your case you are. I just finished a birthday shoot with a group of kids and the 28-70 fit the bill perfectly but y arm is definitely stronger now LOL
@@pianofinger I just shot my nieces 1st birthday tonight actually, with the rf 28-70, r5, and godox v1 flash on camera bounced. it went great! a birthday is a lot less shooting than a wedding haha, it felt great even with that 6 lb setup
@@thirdeyesamuel886 I was using strobes. I shot over 500 pics in an hour. I use the lights like a party strobe and have the kids jumping around. The parents thank me for tuckering out their children and I get to go home an hour earlier with full pay 😃

Do you bother with ND filters when shooting hybrid ? I usually shoot either photos or video & am dabbling in doing both for shoots.. I can’t see using an ND when covering both for weddings/events
(taking off & on all day plus changing settings, so missing moments).. if you have nixed the ND how do you feel the footage looks when shutter speed is way up ? & R6 looks amazing (amazing high ISO, sharper 4k image, and I really prefer the smaller image size for photojournalistic style coverage) but seems like the R5 has a serious advantage when trying to quickly capture video in between photos ?
I don't use them, not the most practical or necessary thing for hybrid shooting or for the types of videos I usually make. That said, I don't see why they couldn't be used because you can just shoot photo through them too. If you really enjoy the cinematic motion blur then maybe it's worth it for you. As far as clients go, I don't really think they know or care, it would perhaps just be a personal preference. Thanks for the good question. I learned a lot from Taylor Jackson regarding shooting styles and principles. Hybrid shooting is the future, keep it up!

Thanks Javier I appreciate that a lot. The focus breathing is minimal / non-existent and I don't miss the 24 at all. The lens is great all around but I think you have to want to use it purely for the sake of it being an engineering marvel. Otherwise from a practical standpoint I'd recommend using the 24-70 or 24-105 for most cases.v
I will say though, if medium to low light is a regular shooting condition you find yourself in, the lens can be perfect. That said...cameras nowadays make great images with ISO 5000+ so it may be an irrelevant point.

@@javymontoya Don't let his comment mislead you. The focus breathing is far from minimal, and it is very noticeable. It's actually very well known. I rented it a couple of times and it's one of the reasons holding me back from purchasing it.
I have a Canon EOS R5 with Canon f1.8 35mm macro and Canon f1.8 50mm lens. I have the budget for just one USM lens right now. Should I go for Canon f1.2 85mm lens or get the Canon f2 29-70mm lens & Canon f2 macro 85mm lens and sell the Canon f1.8 35mm macro & Canon f1.8 50mm lens that I have? I am more of a hobby photographer who takes pics at random things and random moments. Please kindly let me know. Thank you.
id consider owning just a single lens, the rf 24-70 f2.8 or the rf 24-105 f4, at least until you actually find yourself in a situation where you truly need something else

How come your images and video look super clear and super sharp?
Thanks! Many factors can affect this. Equipment, lighting, editing, and settings are the main reasons. The images and video taken OF the 28-70 lens or me standing still talking are from my Canon EOS RP w/ RF 24-70 F2.8. Otherwise, the sample images and videos are from the Canon R6 + RF 28-70 lens. Also, small screens can help. ;)
Great review, I am between this lens and the rf 24-70 f2.8 trying to decide which one to buy for events/ weddings. In terms of sharpness and image quality is the 28-70 a lot better or is it a close match ? I don't need the f2 , f2.8 is pretty fine with me
Both lenses sharp as f. I decide to take 24-70 better choice compare to price of those lenses. And what most important for me it has IS + 24 wide angle.

Only if you're making money professionally and often in low light environments such as a wedding receptions and other low light rooms. I'd recommend the 2.8 instead, or even the 24-105 F4. I also highly recommend the new RF 50 1.8, and it's only $200.

Maybe only more stable than the 24-105 once you get past 70mm. Regardless, both lenses are remarkably stable, and I highly highly highly recommend the 24-105, and typically over the 28-70 for most users.

How did you set up your r5 for an interview shoot? Ninja V?
If the line skipped 4k mode isn't acceptable I would use a Ninja V yes. Ive only recently acquired the R5 though, when I shot the 3x documentary interviews for the movie I was using an R6 and RP and no additional devices. The R6 made it through but barely. Had the interviews gone any longer than they did I would have had to wait for the R6 cool down reset, which is not an acceptable amount of time for the interview space typically. It does indeed appear to be a hamsa so I won't say no. :) It's a center cross section of a pinecone so whatever it is, is designed by nature. The "eye" in the center is a solar quartz which just so happened to also be designed by nature to look like an eye. It's really quite the piece. I consider it to be "God's Eye" or the "Eye of a Dragon" or my "Third Eye." Great observation, enjoy the day!

Hi, I have the R6 and use my 24-70 f2.8 L lens with an adapter for basketball when I'm under the basket. Do you have an opinion on using this RF lens instead or do you feel that I'd get too many unusable pics because of the decreased depth of field?

id highly recommend you keep the lens you have. unless you just want to play around with something new then there really is no good reason I can think of to switch lenses, especially for your application.
your probably barely running across my videos because its a relatively new channel and Ive been mostly inactive as far as making new videos over the past 4 months. more videos are in the works but ive got a lot of other things im working on at the moment.

the vid at tthe wedding looks flat almost no contrast and little color did you color grade it or forget..reminds me of cinestyle with no grading
how are autofocus, sharpness and rendering or bokeh quality compared to rf 24-70mm?
very very similar. I'd currently say the bokeh is slightly smoother with more circular aperture blade formations (bokeh balls). Sharpness probably identical. Autofocus probably identical. Stabilization when used with an R6 or R5 probably identical. The main difference here is certainly the f2 vs f2.8 aperture. Great questions Stefanus, thanks for the engagement!
Is the lens bigger than r6 body?
I use zoom for traveling. After watching your video maybe better use rf 24-70mm for travel.
Rf 24-105 has great range and size but I once traveled with f4 lens. When shooting indoor really have to push iso to 10.000-12.800 because my subjects mostly on the move.

I've used a Spider Pro Dual Camera Holster for the past year and loved it. I used to use a Black Rapid Dual Camera Holster strap system and before that a Peak Design strap. Enjoy!

Sigma's great! I definitely recommend the 28-70 if your making money with it, otherwise id probably recommend something else
The sigma 24-35 is a beast of a lens in its own right though, make no mistake about it!!

I have the sigma 24-35 f2 as well. Was thinking about selling it to get an rf lens but I love it so might just hold on to it lol . Would you say this sigma is a better choice than the Rf 35mm 1.8?
@@miguelp619 I'd say neither is better, just different. Sigma is much larger and heavier but like a zooming prime. 35 1.8 is really light and small, also has macro. Definitely just different, if you're not into carrying the weight of the sigma all the time I definitely think the 35 1.8 or 50 1.8 are very very good options

Awesome lens, but a toss up with the 24-70mm though. Funny all weddings and gatherings here are postponed till after the pandemic, with people dying and hospitals at capacity and all.
A toss up indeed, both have their pros and cons. While it is great to have twice the amount of light enter then lens on the 28-70, the 24-70 is much smaller and lighter, and if you're planning to use it with flash anyway then it doesn't make too much difference. the 28-70 is very much a novelty, if you can bear the weight. Id recommend either one equally.

Ibis sucks.. the wobble is bad. Definitely not a camera for vloging, but that same ibis is beautiful for stills and video shots on tripod.

Love this! Primes are indeed an epic thing. I could see myself using 2-3 primes for weddings in the future, but for now its zoom testing and mastering! Thanks for your prime love
But the same can go with the usage of those primes you listed. Not everything needs to be super blurred out especially in weddings. Clients want to see some of the background because the venue church etc which cost them thousands and thousands to rent/use, they want to see some of it. And as for outdoor portrait, one can be lazy and not find a beautiful scenery (scouting). So ya, usage of primes when you're too lazy to find a nice scenery or shoot during golden hour. Many professional wedding photographers are switching to this lens and are shocked at themselves that they prefer this lens over their primes.
