Canon RF 28-70mm f2 L First Impressions

- For those considering the purchase of the Canon RF 28-70mm f2 L lens, I have created a first impressions video to provide some insights from another photographer who initially had doubts about buying this lens. I had concerns about its weight for wedding shoots, the cost of investing in filters, and whether it could replace my prime lenses. However, after using it for a limited time, I must say that this lens is truly exceptional and unlike anything else in Canon's lineup. The 28-70 f2 L lens is remarkably sharp throughout its zoom range and can even compete with prime lenses in terms of sharpness. I was amazed by this lens's capabilities, which left me wondering how it was even possible. However, I did notice that when shooting wide, the lens is more susceptible to chromatic aberrations in the corners than prime lenses. To further examine its strengths and weaknesses, I will continue testing this lens over the next few month and share my full review video on RUclips.

I've only had a few days with this lens and so far i'm really impressed. I"m going to spend some time getting to know this lens before I make a full review video. If there is anything you want me to test let me know in the comments. Here is a link to the sample photos shot with this lens on my blog vaskoobscura.com/blog/canon-rf-28-70-f2-l-first-impressions Thanks for watching.
Great video! Haven’t seen many on YT talk about using the 28-70 F2 for video, so THANK YOU for your review!!
You're welcome. Glad you liked the video. Welcome to the channel. I saw a good review of this lens for video by a channel called MonkeyPixels if you want more video related content.
Thank You for the video. Just bought this and I’m excited by its versatility with the R5
Thanks for the comment. I'm still blown away at how good this lens is on the R5. It picks up so much fine detail it's amazing. Have fun with your lens.
Amazing lens, I use it for 90% of my work, You are a strong guy so the weight will not be a problem, hahaha! Enjoy it, my friend!
Haha thanks. I certainly can see why this lens would be on your camera 90% of the time. The images it creates are beautiful. Wow. It's the unicorn of lenses lol.
I love your video! It just proved that I picked the right lens (28-70 f2 & 85 f1.2)
Subscribed!!!
Thank you for the comment. Ya I think you picked the right lens too. I have my first paid shoot with the 28-70 today. I'm looking forward to shooting with it.
Thanks for the video. I would like to see a review of the filters you bought thanks 🙏🏼
I'm working on creating the test footage for that video right now. Hope to have that video ready early in the new year. Thanks for the comment. Welcome to the channel.
@@vaskoobscura_ absolutely your content is great man thanks for the knowledge
Outdoor receptacle is a GFCI (Ground Fault Current Interupter) and is used wherever a receptacle may get wet, such as bathrooms, kitchens, or outside.
So you're saying it's ok to put a bathroom receptacle outside?
Hey man quick newbie question on the tree trunk and dynamic range. How did you get the 2nd photo that looked so well colored and exposed? Is it a setting on R5 or is it post with light room? Thanks.
Hey thanks for the question. To be honest it's a little bit of both the camera and Light Room. The trick is to expose for the highlights in the camera to get the best possible dynamic range. Canon cameras have most of their dynamic range in the shadows. Then you can fix up the image in post. I made a video talking more about it here. ruclips.net/video/qDHePvdWmFI/видео.html
@@vaskoobscura_ thanks man this really helps:)
Did you try the new B+W filter from the Master lineup? Does it fully accommodate the lens cap like the Basic one? PolarPro filters are terrible in this regard, and the lens cap doesn't fully fit.
Hi thanks for the question. I have only tried this B+W filter so far and the lens' native lens cap fits perfectly. I would assume that any other B+W filters would be the same. I've never had any issues with B+W filters and lens caps before. Hope that helps.
@@vaskoobscura_ Thank you :)
You're welcome.
Larger uv filters are more difficult to get perfectly shaped and without imperfections. I believe thats why it costs more rather than material costs. Same goes for fast lenses. Just a guess
Thank you for that. That's interesting I'm going to go read up on that and see what I can learn. Appreciate the comment.
I am primarily a photographer. I love this lens. My go to for Weddings and events I haven’t shot any 4K video with it. Recently I was watching something on HD TV and felt the lens was way too sharp. It was not pleasing to see every nook and cranny in the actors faces.
Hi think you for your comment. Sometimes this lens can be too sharp. There are filters you can buy called mist filters that reduce the sharpness and soften the appearance of skin. Makes people look a lot more pleasing in video. :)
Do you take off the filter while keeping away the lens .??
Will fungus grow ??
No I don't take off the filter when i put the lens away. I've never had any issues with fungus growing on any of my modern lenses. Fungus likes to grow in humid conditions. If you're really concerned about fungus growth you can always put your lenses in a lens cabinet with humidity control.
Ok - I'm buying this....
How are you liking the lens so far? I'm using it for just about everything.
@@vaskoobscura_ Yes, it has stayed on my R5 but she is one big lady. I'm shooting portraiture on Saturday and will take my RF50 1.2 for the extra wide open - may look later for an 85 1.2
I would never put a filter on that just use the hood who wants a crappy glass over really nice glass!
B+W is not crappy glass. They make the best and cleanest filters on the market. I only use B+W filters on my L glass. For me it's not worth damaging the front element of a lens. If I really need the sharpest photo possible I can take the filter off. Thanks for the comment.
@@vaskoobscura_ on the edge in your video u didn't like I bet if you just had the hood on, that would clean that up and with the hood not much would ever hit the front Lense
Great video! But please do not toss these lenses around :D.
lol. Years of playing baseball I guess tossing things is like second nature now I don't even realize I do it. Thanks for the comment.
Instead of the filter, spend a little more and get the canon carepak. Covers the whole lens
That certainly is a good option to have along with a filter.
let me throw my $3000 lens up in the air as well.
hahaha. Years of playing baseball i guess tossing things is a habit.
Anyone seeing two lines in all the pictures or it’s just me?
Two lines? I don't see anything on my screen. Where are you seeing the lines.
25:46 you can see them clearly. One horizontal line on the right and another one small vertical on the 85mm 1.2. I think unfortunately it’s caused by a laser just like on my r6.
My bad that’s on your screen not your sensor. What a relief
i came here for the review annddd uhmmm now i left.
Thanks for the comment. This wasn't a review video it's just a first impressions video. I can't seriously review something I've only just taken out of the box. I need some time to get to know the lens and take on paid assignments. I'll make a proper review of this lens in May/June ish. Than I'll be able to give you some real useful info instead of just reading off the product specs.
@@vaskoobscura_Even though it’s been a year, for me this one of the top reviews. Because every RUclips (except you and 1 more) review of this lens was shot at f/2 and they were not sharp. And I was like where are the sharp pictures? Then you have almost all of yours at or above f/4.5. Super, super sharp pictures. Not sure I enjoyed bricks very much but I liked the sharpness. Thanks!
Would you like a camera with your lens? That thing is huge. I want it!! I hate changing lenses.
The good news is once you get this lens you'll save money because you can cancel your gym membership. hahahaha. Thank you for the comment. Appreciated. Welcome to the channel.
