Your videos are the most informative, coherent and understandable among the "photography" community here on RUclips. You go straight to the point, loud and clear. Not like any other RUclipsrs which is just about them, them and them, with almost no samples and little details about the product they are reviewing. Pure narcissism from them.
I really appreciate your hard work and dedication to sharing knowledge about obscure lenses and photography products.
Seriously. It's so nice to have a reviewer who shows pictures taken with the gear instead of an entire video of themselves. I mean sure, sometimes it's a self-portrait. But rarely! And totally tastefully included!
I have owned this lens since day one and it's my best general purpose lens ever! You have to look at this lens as owning 4 prime lenses (28mm. 35mm, 50mm, 70mm) People get so focus on a price tag. I try to look at is this lens worth it for my needs and it sure is! I shoot weddings and this is my go to lens! It was worth every penny!
Michael Kullum I’ve been struggling with the decision to pull the trigger on this beast or pick up the RF50... this one just seems like the better choice. But I don’t want to regret later not having that 1.2 of the 50mm. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
@@phuchong7568 if you're more low light situations and don't need the zoom I will go with the 50mm. If you're using a lens for more general purpose I would go for the 28-70. I have also used the 50mm which is an great lens but the 28-70 still will give you a good bokeh at f2 so I felt like I had no need for the 50mm.
Michael Kullum Thank you for the advice 👍🏻
J Hong You’re welcome!
You have a point about the four primes👌👏👏👏
That lens cost more than my RP and 5D Mrk ii, 7d, 700d, and 2 L Lenses combined!
I want it!!
I have this lens and it really is something else. Sharp wide open, barely any chromatic aberration, and gives a prime lens look while being a versatile zoom. This is an incredible lens for portrait and event shooters and perfect for me who does theatre photography in dark venues.
What also comes highly recommended are your reviews. With a minimum of hyperbole you do the job, video after video. All your videos are informative and worth watching, I do even if I don’t plan to buy the lens or own the system you’re reviewing.
Thanks a lot, Chris.
Keep up the great testing job.
I clicked on this video faster than Chris can say "out of focus".
the crazy part is this zoom lens is sharper than many prime lenses at whole 28-70 range
Great review as ever Christhoper..... thanks
I always look forward to your reviews and especially on the high profile glass. Very informative. I’m a relatively satisfied Sony shooter but always has the gear itch for the next best thing. I’m liking the RF glass by Canon and May even consider adding it to my kit if they come out with a stronger body to match these amazing RF lenses.
Great review (and reviewer). Thank you!
Great Review. I cannot seem to dampen my enthusiasm for this lens.
This movie has all the information I wanted to know. I’m happy to buy this lens. Thank you great editor.
Impressive lens. Thanks for the review.
This lens is a monster, incredibly sharp edge to edge
Image quality on this looks insane. Really impressive.
Thanks @Chris this was really fantastic. Even though not for me yet but guys would love this Godly review. God bless you.
I like your voice, gentle and comfortable to watch your video
My backordered 28-70mm f2 is finally on its way.
Impressive. Luckily it lacks IS and those four mm in the wider range so I dont have to sell my house... Or am I? ;)
with IS the lens would be even larger and heavier. It's already 3.1 lbs / 1.5kg
@@Innovate-pq9ci Sure, its all about compromises :)
I own this lens I don't really need the IS (selling tool) but I do miss the extra 4mm..24mm and 28mm make a big difference in certain situations.
@@kullumphoto To keep up the quality for another 4mm at the wide end, this lens could easyly cost 4 times more, so I guess you wouldn´t own it ;). As Bjurra stated correctly: its all about compromises!
@@firstglass1696 oh I would of paid more lol
Great review! 🙂
Great Review!
I have this lens and I absolutely love it. It is heavy, but I think of it as not having to bring my other prim lenses on shoots
Fantastic reviews and a lens I’ve rented and continue to covet.
If you don’t mind the bulk, this could be the only lens you’ll ever need. It’s like a bucket of primes in one!
This is my go to lens now. I used to use primes, had 35, 50, 85 for boudoir. I bought this to shoot some weddings. Blows my primes away. Wicked sharp. Sold all my primes and upgraded to an R5. This lens with the R5 can handle ANYTHING. Weddings, boudoir, portraits. It's a dream.
Looks like one hell of a lens! Thanks for the review Chris.
Hi ,, Thank you for the beautiful presentation ,,my question is that lens suitable for food photography
WOW! Woooow! I've never seen a zoom lens perform that well. All of Canons new mirrorless lenses have been absolutely great so far... Excellent review, keep the new Canon lenses coming!
Not a mid-zoom, but the 70-200 options are quite stellar.
I own this lens and shoot weddings, a little landscape, it’s an absolute beast although I’m somewhat used to it now. And to be honest when it’s sat in a spiderpro holster it isn’t too bad once you get used to it. As far as people comments go about IS, I really don’t mind at all and would rather have the f2 knowing that Canon will be bringing out IBIS in future bodies.
Thanks for the great review again, your time you put into these is always very much appreciated! :-)
For now I decided not to buy the RF 28-70 due to weight, but several things could swing the pendulum of thought. If I buy one, I would sell my RF 50mm 1.2 because my two 85mm lenses still give me f/1.8 and f/1.2 options. But this would replace my 35mm, 50mm, 24-70mm, and probably the 85mm 1.8 lens. I often use a 70-200mm with spiderpro holster or holdfast strap, so the 28-70 wouldn't feel unusual in comparison.
Impressive image quality. My biggest hesitation (aside from its price and the cameras it attaches to) is the 28mm wide end. I’ve become used to using the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 for E mount and while I didn’t think 28mm at the wise would bother me too much, it sort of does. For interiors or when you’re standing in front of a large object, that 4mm can make all the difference. I think my next zoom will be a 24-70mm because that range feels much more “all purpose” to me. Still, this lens is really impressive for what it achieves. No question.
Canon makes the best lenses PERIOD
I think anybody could make better lens by making it bigger. Look at what Sigma have done recently. Its 40mm ART is much bigger than its own 35 and 50. All of it are not even a 1.2 lens compared to Canon's own EF lenses.
Thats it im buying this lens! Thanks
Hi Christopher, any plans on testing the lens again on a Canon R5 and / or Canon R6 Mark II? Curious how this will hold on those cameras.
I wish I could afford that lens...
Great video btw
Thank you Mr Frost
Chris ! Please help! Just got this lens and it makes the clicky sound when focusing for photos is this okay/normal? Thanks so much
Do you know of any shotgun mics that combat the AF noise? I just got this lens and it’s almost unusable for talking head work due to how noisy it is
Will the 1.5 kg lens rip out the lens mount on the RP camera when worn over the shoulder and walking?
Does in camera corrections affect sharpness of this lens.
great review... just imagine this Beast with that other New Beast of the R5 (and of course the R6)... wow!!!
It looks that you will have to rereview all the RF lenses now!!! just kidding. thanks for such big effort with all this wonderful reviews! your the best =)
So what do you guys think about this lens vs nikon 85 1,4? (the latest version)
Superb review as always Christopher and bravo Canon. I would love to see you test Nikon lenses someday.
You should repeat this test with the EOS R5
Definitely a WTF lens. I'm beside myself. WTF stands for Way Too Fantastic, for all those Christians out there who don't know.
Francis George shut up
@@c6fields Is that a new way of saying 'hi'?
Definitely a WTF lens.. 3k dollars 🙄
What does being a Christian have anything to do with?
@@jeremytheoneofdestiny8691 he's a Christian minister. So assuming his Christian followers are feeling offended by the language, I thought I should qualify that.
Do 82mm filters vignette on this a lot when using step down rings?
Seriously, I will definitely switch to canon mirrorless line one day, look at all these lenses, insane
and you Chris, insane as well, insanely good review!
The RF 50mm 1.2 has been superb. The only reason I didn't get the RF 28-70mm is weight. Removing grips last year, my future aim is a lighter bag for portraits and weddings. But the 28-70mm can replace 3 to 4 lenses, a thought to ponder. No coincidence the SLR Lounge guy said this is his favorite lens ever.
Canon really put out the best designed lenses for their new system. If I wanted to have minimalistic system I would go for the 50/1.2 and this 28-70/2 on some EOS R body, only I'm not sure that selling all my current lenses would pay for this heavenly combo :) I'd like it even for traveling too. A little heavy for two lens system but the best possible quality output.
I bought this Lens and don't care for it much.
@@franksmith7390 - Frank, you could sell it for about what you paid for it! (you know that). No use keeping it if it doesn't rock your boat!
@@hom296 true i have it my collection. It serves it purpose for setting clients.
do you think the heavy weight will destroy the lens mount?
When you shoot wide open at 28mm does your photo have vingettes?
For that price range and weight I think it's a much better to have two camera bodies and use a 35mm and a 85mm. A humble opinion as wedding and street photographer
@leicanoct mad? Mind your words. There are countries where the minimum salary per month is not even enough to buy an used 50mm f1.8 stm.
@leicanoct your profile says leica, leica made its fame thanks to documentry and streets photographers whom documented life. If you're not interested in other countries you're but a guy who has only money to buy a fancy camera. You don't deserve to brand your profile leica then. It's too big for you buddy.
@leicanoct a some what rather rude response to someone expressing in his own words humble opinion.
Many wedding photographers use two bodies with a 24-70 and 70-200 as a matter of course.
yes it would want to have great performance for the price , thanks a great review
Great review Chris. I couldn't justify spending that kind of money on this lens though.
What produced the best image this or the rf50mm 1.2
I got this lens as a gift but will it work with my canon rebel3?
the bokeh is quite outstanding for a f2 and a zoom
Great review ! Only a question, where you find the test photo pattern ?
They are a collage of pics he took himself
Finally have one shipping from Best Buy here in the states, and I couldn't be more excited to chuck my 24-105 out the window! (not really… selling it to KEH!)
A new era of optical technology.
I hope you can review the new RF 24 - 70 2,8 IS soon!
Hi Chris, great review, I bough 5 months ago a T7i with 18-55 Kit Lens, I want to upgrade to sharper lenses, but i also like the range and convenience of the EF-S 18-135. I like macro too. I do not plan to shoot video, but I certainly want IS. Mi budget is about $300-$400 per each lens. So I could figure 3 options:
1- Go with EF-S 35mm F2.8 IS Macro and 18-135 , and ditch the 18-55 kit lens.
2- Go with EF-S 35mm F2.8 IS Macro and an EF-S 55-250 STM and keep the 18-55 Kit lens.
3- Go for a sharper 17-50 sigma (or similar) at F2.8 and combine it with a zoom later.
By the way..how does the sigma 17-70(c) compare to the Canon EF-S 18-135 (STM or USM nano)?
Thanks for your advice!
Gustavo Taliano i would delinitely choose 18-135 over sigma. Double zoom range and sigma is indecently soft at wideangle.
I really miss like this review in nikon lenses, your review about the new lenses are the best I’ve seen unti I became thinking about switching to canon just to have fully review about every lens I’m looking for 😉
I love the size of that lens. It’s like a tank. I want it, but $3000 😢
Well, it does replace a whole bag of f/1.8 primes and the f/2.8 standard zoom.
Cheaper to buy a tank
Its an investment dude 💎
It's heavy, but it's not heavier than an EF70-200 2.8 for example, so still very well hand-holdable. And since you only need to carry one lens, the bag gets lighter in total :)
nice vid!! u mentioned lenses is like a plastic feel, is this lense different to other rf lenses like 50mm f1.2?
The ones I've tested all feel the same so far
Wow you can see the quality of the photos through a youtube video. Definitely an amazing lens except for that price tag.
This lens alone costs more than all my gears combined
Same)':
Where is the 5th from last image taken??
Could you please do a review of the rf 50mm and ef 85mm ?
MadManTnT Agreed and vs this 28-70
how much pices?
My muscles and wallet plus no RF camera prevent me from getting this lens.
Hi Christopher, I really liked your review of the sigma 18-35mm f1.8. Would you suggest the sigma 18-35 over the Nikkor 17-55mm f2.8? Both are near the same price used and I'm not sure if the faster sigma f1.8 apature is more useful over the Nikkors extra 20mm of reach. Primary use will be for travel and street photos. Thanks, keep up the great work!
Clay I have taken the nikon 17-55 around the world with me. It is highly realiable in terms of build quality and autofocus. The lens design is 18 years old but it is still a good lens. The middle of the image is always sharp. The corners are softer even at f8 but the resolution is more than sufficient. More bothering is the weight and the loss of contrast when shooting towards bright light. The sigma is a sharper lens but i highly doubt that it focuses as fast and reliable as the nikon. I also believe that 18-35 has just not enough reach for a walk around lens. Most of my pictures are taken either at 17 or 55mm. 55mm is also a nice focal lenght for taking portraits. Also ask your self how usefull is it for you to shoot wide angle stills at f1.8? Imo the 18-35 is a nice lens for video and less attractive for stills.
@@AG-nj3ky Hey thank you very much for the input ✌
Nice lens for some long hiking walks !
NOOOOO!
Lol, refinance the house! that sounds right, thank you for another excellent review God bless.
amazing
This optic masterpiece seems to be so impatient to upcoming IBIS R camera.
Fantastic review. Real bummer that zoom ring is so low-grade. I'd expect butter smooth action from a $3k lens, but it sounds like this behaves similarly to the RF 24-105 f/4 L.
Seeing that monster on an R50 cracks me up
Would love to see an update "Sharp enough for 45mp" video for this lenses.
it obviously will be sharp enough... Many EF lenses are even sharp "enough"... Check the list canon released for their high resolution 5D with 50 something mp :)
Love your reviews! This one makes me so glad I'm not interested in the lateral move to Canon's first stab at full frame mirrorless. Speaking of mirrorless have you tried some of the super fast manual focus EF-M native mount lenses? I'm interested in a comparison of the 55mm f/1.4 artisans lens to the Rokinon 50mm f/1.2 (Both native EF-M) lenses.
I've tested the Rokinon lens: look for my review of the Samyang 50mm 1.2 (not the XP version)
This lens make me into thinking to get the eos r
This sounds very nice in theory but it looks so massive and heavy that I think I probably wouldn't enjoy using it much
I kept forgetting it was a zoom lens.
All the pictures was so good that I forgot it.
And then I saw some video of zooming and I was surprised, like "what was that!?".
Is it parfocal?
I bought this lens and used it for one season’s weddings. It’s a great lens but I have gone back to my f1.2 85 and 50 primes as it can’t match them wide open.
I never heard of coma smering, but now I do get it what it is xD
I've been working with prime lenses and two bodies as a wedding photographer during years.... But two weeks ago, I decided to purchase this monster: Zero regrets. IQ, Autofocus, versatility, and bokeh/light, is simply awesome and, overall, I'm carrying less weight than before. I was scared for his weight, but is more tolerable than I expected. Now waiting for Canon, lets see if soon there's out an eos R with two SD (IBIS would be really welcome, even only for photography). No more mpx.
Fran Decatta No regrets hey? I’ve been struggling if I should pull the trigger. I’m a prime shooter but this lens seriously peaked my interest. I do think eventually I will also purchase the 50 but just trying to decide which one I want first. Either one is gonna hurt the wallet so it will be some time before I pick up the other.
@@phuchong7568 if you can live with f2 light and bokeh, and also work as a wedding photographer, 28-70 is a safe choice. It won't give a bokeh from other world, but you'll work much faster and get decisive moments, while change the perspective very fast. Another option is to rent it before purchase it 😊
Fran Decatta Thanks for the fast reply. I actually shoot street and cityscape. Also shops in Saigon don’t really rent out lens. I’ve asked around with no luck. Kinda miss that about NA. Thanks for the input tho!
I just bought this, I am trying to like it
$3000 28mm-70mm f2 + $4000 canon R5 before tax. Let me crawl under a rock.
Would you sell your RF 50 1.2 to get this one? I have the RF 50 1.2 and thinking of doing it, I’m a portrait, studio, beach and boudoir photographer
Used for a bit. Returned for 24-70. 28 wasn’t that much of an issue. The size and weight when working all day with other lenses and another camera is painful
This reminds me of A7III and 24-70 f2.8 GM lens I tested before. Gotta love the usability and quality of the combo. This Canon version sure looks promising despite its price....
I recently got the R5 and I feel like I'm missing out on some performance since I don't have any Canon lenses. I have some excellent--and expensive--lenses from Tamron and Sigma, but they struggle a bit with Eye AF, which is one of the things I really want to be rock solid. I'm so tempted to get this 28-70 f/2. It could possible replace the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art and Tamron 85mm f/1.8 primes I have, and maybe even the truly superb Tamron 35mm f/1.4. I lose a little bit of light, but I think the overall performance would be so good that it would be worth it. I just need to convince my wallet.
and the zoom!!! xD
Did you get it?
@ I ended up getting the RF 50mm f/1.2 and RF 85mm f/1.2. Those are absolutely fantastic lenses, but I probably should have gotten the 28-70 instead of the 50. Then again, I already have the Tamron 35mm f/1.4 that is freaking amazing, so I primes for the focal lengths I use most: 35, 50, 85 and 105. Still, I occasionally wish I had that 28-70.
“...Are as delicately and finely crafted as a Jordan Peterson argument” 😂👏🏽
I just placed this video next to your new Leica Q3 video, and the RF 28-70mm F2 blows the Leica 28mm F1.7 out of the water. Thanks Chris, you just saved me $6000.00. 😅
Hi i am using a canon 700d apsc camera. I want to buy a 50mm lens for that which one do you recommend for regular use.

I bought a Nikon ZF recently because it looks cool, been happy with it, but seeing this lens makes me regret not getting a canon mirrorless, lol
When the lens on a mirror less is 4 times the size of the camera. Is it really worth it?
This lens joins the other we-did-it-because-others-cannot lenses, like the 50mm 1.0, the 200mm 1.8, the 8-15mm fisheye, and the 17mm TS-E.
Love it!
Great review. Wish that the video capabilities was better though
How is it worse for video?
