I have used Linux for 30+ years and distro hop once a month. I have tried dozens of distros and put them thru their paces. Everyone has something wrong with them but Linux Mint does the best job for me. I also have Debian 12 on a second drive and have found that to be very usable! Most don't even install on my old Fujitsu laptop and some of those that did either did not support the hardware or didn't have needed apps in the repositories. At this moment I'm re-installing mint on the laptop because it had Mint 19.3 which is no longer supported. I installed IVentoy on my home server and away it went installing over the network! It's too early to say if this is going to work but Linux is getting better thanks to Ubuntu & Mint!

30+ years and still distro hopping? Damn. My prime distro hopping days were the first two to four, maybe six years. These days, hopping has been replaced with testing new distros in VMs, or Ventoy for those distros that don't play well with virtualization. I no longer want to take the risks of constantly changing my main and only machine, and want at least some semblance of stability in terms of the way my system functions. No more funny stuff like mismatching/different umasks causing different ownership and permissions for different files.
That said, a bit of hopping won't hurt here and there when wanting to try something new and feeling adventurous, and just tired of using the same old distro.

I feel you, sir. Every time I watch a YT video about a distro I seem to hop. I can't stop.
KDE Fedora seems to be a constant reference point, though.

Mint is like the Toyota Corolla of distros and that's not a bad thing whatsoever.

Latest versions of mint and debian don't support old hardware, so what's the point of these distro's?

I've been using Linux Mint for over a year and it's absolutely excellent - easy to use and much more responsive than Windows.

I converted to Linux Mint on an older laptop and also a few of my senior friends. Yes, we were all on Windows and now we're enjoying Linux. Mint is user friendly, always works, updates are easy, and you will survive okay if you don't know anything about the terminal.

If you want a distro to actually use and get work done its Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Zorin, Manjaro ect. If you don't care about stability and only want to play with your distro its arch.
It really is that simple. There are hundreds of distros out there. about 5-6 of them are good enough to use daily.

I’m a new Linux user of just over 2 months, using Debian 12 Stable at the moment.
In the first week of knowing Linux I started with Kubuntu 24.04 because I like KDE, then tried Linux Mint because it is recommended to starters, before jumping to Debian because at the time it seemed to be more straightforward if I wanted to both avoid snap, and to install multiple DEs.
At the moment I’m not quite sure whether I should continue to use Debian. It serves me well at the moment, but oftentimes when I have to try to do something more involved, I find myself out of depth to deal with guides and tutorials for Debian. I like the idea of using Debian and also like really using it, but I do wonder if I’m a try-hard stubbornly using it while being not capable enough. Like, “if I have difficulty follow the guides for Debian, should I be using it now? Perhaps I should go ‘git gud’ with Linux through Linux Mint first, then transition to Debian later when I’m ready for it.”
I’m still using Debian out of comfort right now, but I’m really not sure if it’s the right way…

Debian is by far the 'easiest' of the downstream distros. If it feels slightly unmanagagable but you're still doing it, I would stick with it. It will become more comfortable through usage, and you've already demonstrated that you are capable by installing and using it daily.
I think a good indicator of when it is time to switch distros is when you run into something your current distro can't do, or does worse than others.
I had been running debian 12 for the last year, but just recently moved over to picaOS (debian sid based distro w/ a bunch of custom kernel patches) because I wanted more recent packages and more focus on gaming than vanilla debian delivered.

@paultapping9510 Pika os is fantastic. Currently using it and after linux mint it became home for me. Fixes are really quick to. It needs more recognition

As for not a few Colleagues LMint-22 is my distro of production and I use LMint-21.1 & Debian 12.8 in my other PCs happily ever after
Imho the best distro is the one works better for you (your hard, needs, likes...)

From what I know there is a good choice of fine Linux distros available today. I have a pwrsonal preference for KDE and stability so I am very comfortable with openSUSE Leap. I think that similar would apply to Tumbleweed. It is crucial, IMO, to install a distro and really get to know it first. After this one can decide upon whether to stay with it orchange to another distro more suitable to your needs and one that is more comfortable in your use. I have to say that I have great respect for openSUSE in this case.

Some become almost religious in distros and territorial for anyone to say anything against it. For me, it is simple. Try them, find what works for you and your style. I have been working with Linux since the very first year it was created. Used many of the OGs like SLS->Slackware, Debian, RHL(Fedora), SUSE that are still going today. Arch came a bit later, but brings a different take on it. I will occasionally move to different distros because I love the world of Linux and love to see what the different styles are doing.

My absolute favorite desktop environment is elementary OS, but as for the distros, I use Arch based. Mostly because my laptop doesnt like anything else. I get audio stutters on ubuntu and fedora distros.

My laptop is old. 2012 HP Pavillion notebook. Intel i3 4th gen. Integrated graphics. Currently using Cachy OS on the XFS for the file system. Like it more than btfs even tho I can't do snapshots like btfs but I usually save my stuff with a different method

elementary OS is not a desktop environment, it's a Linux distribution which uses the Pantheon desktop environment.

@@MannyGraalHi! Can you tell me which method you use? I also have an old Dell notebook and my only problem is saving my stuff.

    • @MannyGraal
      @MannyGraal 4 дня назад +1

The method I would use is an external SSD, but currently, I am using Mega Sync. I have all my files stored there. Mega Sync offers 50 GB of free storage, and you can pay for additional space if needed. However, if you do need more than 50Gb, I would suggest an external SSD.

I used to prefer linux mint and pop!_os but at the moment I'm really enjoying cachy os. I think when pop goes full cosmic i will switch though.

Funny that I'm basically the reverse, everytime I came back to CachyOS, I just miss Pop's tiling feature so much that it doesn't matter what distro I'm using, I only last like 3-5 days using it before coming back to Pop, I might go back to CachyOS or go for the Immutables when both have COSMIC ready to use.

I don't like any *ubuntu flavors, sorry about that. I don't like Fedora anymore. I had been an Arch user for a while, and that improved my skills a lot. Gentoo had also been a good workout. In the last few years I went for distros in which I can find vanilla desktop to customize by myself and trustworthy software. My favorite is Opensuse KDE although it is not targeted to rooky users. It seems more power user oriented to me. I also like distro supplying good manuals cause it bothers me to read tons of threads wasting time. Debian is one of my favorites primarily in lack of beefy hardware.

    The correct answer is Arch.
Really though, whatever you find that works best for you and what you want to do. Until you find something better, of course.
I'm always looking and improving. I hope you are too. Though anything operating system related and how to make my computer do what I want it to do (and nothing extra, please!) is one of my main hobbies, so I understand most people just want it to work and not mess with things so much.
