In open source software development, sooner or later you will come across the terms or roles of "developer" and "maintainer". In this video, I try to give an overview and differentiate between the two roles. Nothing is set in stone. Each project can assign the roles itself. Often, the lead developer is also the "first" maintainer. But not always. That's why this video also contains my view of t...

That was the Linux year 2023 - my review
I ran the Linuxmint upgrade app and followed the on screen prompts and upgraded with no issues. The whole process took about 10-15 minutes. Very easy for a new user like me to upgrade.
I used the last 2/3 months the LMDE6 which I liked very much. Yesterday I did a complete reinstall of the Linux Mint 22 Wilma and boy, I like it even more....
This video was very enjoyable and pleasurable. Thank you for your contribution to humanity and Linux.
Upgrading like a pioneer!
A most helpful video. Thank you. As a leap 15.5 KDE user, I am a little wary of Leap 15.6 KDE but is supported until next December so I will install it. Still a little concerned about the upcoming 'alternatives'? to Leap. I welcome any comments please.
If I were you, I would stick with Leap 15.6 and wait until SUSE releases ALP. Then it should become clear in the course of 2025 how well openSUSE is progressing and how things will continue with Leap 16 or whether Leap 15.7 is still to come. So no stress. Just wait and see.
Great video, showing how big changes are coming sadly. Subscribed, Thank you.
thx buddy :)
Great Wallpaper by the way. I like the idea of 'Slowroll' and look forward to it. As a 'Leap' user I am thinking of possibly using 'Slowroll' as a stage in eventually migrating to 'Tumbleweed'. Thank you for this informative and helpful upload. I think that I will miss 'Leap' though.
I don’t know why cinnamon is so popular Mate is the perfect replacement for anyone who is coming from Windows. It’s a well designed desktop. You should try it
Very good overview. Although, you might have mentioned that the easy way to try all the options before you make your choice is to use live versions booted from USB. When you decide which one you like, you can install from the USB drive. There are a number of good tutorials showing how to make them.
Sadly I've had more problems with LMDE 6 than Ununtu MINT. I can't even shut down without entering the terminal to issue shutdown now and half the time that fails with the only choice being the power button. I moved to LMDE as my dell precision 4700 is not support with video drivers past MINT 19
I use the distribution that comes with the Raspberry Pi 5. What does that say about me?
I use EndeavourOS, what does that say about me?
I was sad to see Manjaro and not EndeavourOS. I would say you are someone who made the smart choice for an arch based distro.
I am happy opensuse was not left behind.
I thought Arch users motto is By The Way :)
Crunch Bang Plus Plus, no clutter and uses Debian Repos.
Arch is Individualist? The forums are full of morons, yes but it's a community driven distro. Even if it's a large portion of bad apples
I don't agree with your take on Debian. Debian is for people who place a strong emphasis on stability, even to the point of forgoing newer features and using a slightly older, and more tested base. The Debian repositories are also huge, so compiling from source is rarely, if ever needed. Additionally the importance placed on free software has become less pronounced in Debian over the years, with non-free firmware now being installed by default, which as a Debian user is a welcome change in my opinion.
If you use mint you are a person that likes mint. Who knew!
I run Tumbleweed on the desktop and leap on servers. I am looking forward to the addition of Cockpit in 15.6! I would love.ro.know.more.about ALP. I am a bit out of the loop there. Thanks!
Well I use Arch ... I have custom scripts that help me to install arch on any machines just within minutes ... I really like arch linux .... Because it gives me freedom for everything and everything is present in a vanilla form without any bloat or anything .... whereas to the system breakages.... I barely have faced any .... I do use BTRFS and keep backups if things go south .... even in some instances I have not regularly updated my pc ... In some case up-to 6 months ... apart from pgp keys expiring and few replacement packages haven't faced any issues .... I don't know people say that Arch is very unstable unusable ... It surely is usable and not that unstable... Infact, I find it easy to install then Debian at times thanks to arch wiki <3....
I run cineman on my desktop with core i7 and 1660 ti graphics card and 16 gig ddr 4. With ssd 1024 tb XFCE on my t530 thinkpad core i5 with 16 gigs ram 512ssd I've been running linux min for 10 years
Everything OK but gaming still not even close to Windows.
excellent tour! great thanks.
Since i switched to Pop OS (gnome with addons) some 8 years ago, i kept using gnome. Ubuntu is only acceptable, when snap is removed (and blocked for reinstall).
Are you still on PopOS mate?
@@Stevos-Corner Yes and no😑 Use it on my Macbook Air 2012 exclusively. Recently i looked at fedora, zorin, ubuntu 24.04 (removed snap) and endeavour, all very interesting, as System76 is working on their own Rust based desktop. Not sure they manage that to become stable soon, so need a fallback. Zorin is very nice, lets see when their update to 24.04 arrives. I would use Mint, but cinnamon is not my cup of tea. I keep my old hardware, so i have dozens of notebooks and desktop pcs to play with.
I'm considering swapping from Tumbleweed, right now I can't log off, reboot or shutdown properly from KDE and need to use a sudo command. Leap packages are a bit older but I don't mind using Flatpak or Distrobox for anything that I want to be more up to date. The only concern is how openSUSE 16 will be like but I'm sure it'll be fine in the end. Flatpak not being configured for Flathub by default is a bit weird but it might make sense given corporations might want to run their own Flatpak repository (?).
I've been using Cinnamon for a number of years now. I dual boot it on my main desktop and use it on my old Celeron laptop.
Arch helpers are the best
Linux Mint Cinnamon on Edge. Newer hardware; no sense in not trying it first. Newer Linux kernel. so, as long as it works, no sense in sticking with the older kernel
LMDE should be called Mint OS
I used Mint for 6months. It was on 'ok' experience. But I would never recommend it to anyone who is new to Linux... Even to my sworn enemies. Instead I would 100% recommend openSUSE Leap or Tumbleweed with KDE DE. Mint's cinnamon is just a big nope. Zero useful functionalities in it, while on KDE side, its a dreamwalk. Also in Mint's store almost everything is flatpak instead of native package, which is anything but good attitude on their end. Flatpaks use 10x more disk space. How can they just shrug like that over this? A package that natively requires 200megs, will install 2gigs, because of sandbox... With this manner why the hell not just install separate linux instances for each package??!
As long as you are not good in terminal and you use nvida gpu, LMDE is not good choice, because it comes without driver manager. Cinnamon is something very basic these days and I would not even try to go for Mate or XFCE as they look very old out of the box. Plasma 6 is something I wish to see in Mint, but that's not going to happen.
Which is why I'm using MX KDE now instead of Mint.
@@Nofanboyz Does MX provide a driver manager and support nvidia gpu?
Xfce for me. Stable, quick and customizable. But on MX.
MX>Sparky>Peppermint>Siduction>LMDE>Ubuntu=> Debian 👑
Bad video title. Should be more like "Mint desktop environments explained"
The title is only a part. The other is the tumbnail
Brother I almost dual booted every linux distro with windows 11 on my Laptop but the brightness doesnt work I can change value but no effects is happening I tried every youtube tuturial but couldnt fix it :/ how can I get a support to fix my problem?
I've used and enjoyed Cinnamon for the past couple of years, but if it disappeared tomorrow I would be almost as happy with XFCE, which I've used in the past. Both are sufficiently customizable to create a pleasant and efficient experience.
I have yesterday customised my Linux Mint using custom themes, Cursor, icons, Simple Conky Clock + config, plank dock and beautiful wallpaper.
Its kinda funny when you say Mate is for people with limited system resources meanwhile its taking up 1.1 GB doing nothing...lol Anyone remember a few short years ago when XFCE would use about 300 MB of RAM?
xfce absolutely flies.
@PaxAlotin we DONT need anybody "working on it" ..... its PERFECT
I try to stick with LMDE and avoid Ubuntu at all costs. I stay away from Fedora too.
fedora is fantastic distro, yes it is true this OS is for a bit more advanced linux users
@@Arek1125 Maybe we are thinking about two different fedoras then. Fedora is a cakewalk, I just don’t agree with the talk of adding telemetry for the second time. Windows users will feel right at home don’t you think?
@@johnmichalek9802It will be opt-in telemetry though, right?
@@Arek1125 not stable at all. It is not a good choice for most people, especially those using NVIDIA cards.
@@pantarei. nope after update you have to just wait a little, reboot and everything goes back to normal you can also block the karnel change and there will be no problems with nvidia drivers at all ,as i wrote people have to learn linux a little and than everythig is easy and runs smooth....i remember myself when started to use linux i crashed linux mint and wanted to switch back to windows
Running cinnamon desk top with LM Edge edition. Stable, fast and smooth. No complaints and good for a Linux newbie like me.
LMDE is not for nvidia users.
Shouldn't need Edge as of LM 22, it now has the 6.8 Kernel series.
@@pantarei. Not sure what the Debian Edition would have to do with the Edge version of LM 20 or 21. LMDE is at 6, and there is no Edge listed. Though I am sure nVidia probably isn't a good match with LMDE.
Great video !
thx buddy
What a lousy comparison. It's like he never even tried them but looked up random tidbits and arguments (disregarding whether they are obsolete today or not). Like Debian requiring manual configuration to set up a desktop environment like in Ubuntu, comparing Debian stable with Ubuntu, which is based on Debian testing, in order to conclude that that the former has outdated packages, and so on. The video is full of crap.
Been using Linux since 1995 as my mainstream desktop. I tried just about every distro that came out. Some lasted a day, some lasted a week or a month, but I always tried to go back to a kde distro like Kubuntu. A few months ago, I was having trouble with the latest version of Kubuntu. After many months of trying to troubleshoot a freezing, I gave up and switched to mx-linux on another computer. I fell in love with it. I haven't solved my previous freezing problem but suspect it is a hardware graphic problem. I'll rebuilt that computer when I have time. In the meantime, I'm going to stick with mx-linux. Thank you for a great overview of mx-linux. It's the best kde version of any distro I have ever tested.
Leap 16 is going to be both immutable and non-immutable.
debian适合追求完美的人。mint适合普通大众。
I'm at 2:27 and the video is still going on about the benefits and reasons for doing the install. Get to the point already! This is why text documentation is superior to watching videos. But I suppose not as lucrative.
i used arch
after a couple of distro-hopping, i've been satisfied with debian 12 running xfce. it's light, stable and just works.
This was sad to watch, but i guess a cool thing doesn't work for absolutely everyone. My personal vision is that all distros should share the same app library that is easy to use for both developers and users. With Flathub we could finally say that x app is on Linux, not x distro and I'm forever grateful for it. Nevertheless choice matters and I get a big smile when a app is available on both Flathub and Snap, as well as .deb download.
I'd rather use a Marknote+(Nextcloud/Syncthing/NFS) combination.
