    For our first video looking at the lore of Final Fantasy 9, we're taking a look at the main protagonist of the story, Zidane Tribal!
    Zidane's role within the narrative of Final Fantasy IX is a rather interesting one, as he goes from being a performer within the Tantalus Theatre Group, through to fighting his fate and saving his planet from assimilation.
    It also sees him develop relationships with characters like Princess Garnet (Dagger), Vivi, Eiko, Amarant and Steiner. And how could we forget the rather tumultuous relationship he shares with Kuja.
    We hope you enjoy learning more about Zidane and have enjoyed playing as him in Dissidia NT recently! Be sure to let us know which character you'd like us to focus on next!

    After our not-so-subtle tease as to who would be next in our Origins series, Zidane Tribal has surfaced! We don't know about you guys, but right now we're just sitting back and appreciating the job that Sakaguchi and Ito did with the story in Final Fantasy IX. Thanks for watching all, and let us know who you'd like to see next! ~Darryl/Lauren

      The problem of ff9 actually came from it's badtime launching, just a year before ps2 release (which have far more better graphic than ps1)..
      That's why it was replaced by ffx on hotlist immediately..

    FF IX taught me a lot about life. It has many philosophical themes that really made me think. It has etched it way to my heart that it's impossible that I will ever forget the characters in this game. When I played this game 18 years ago, I literally felt attached to the characters that I thought they were my friends. And when the game ended, the time came that I had to say goodbye to them. It was so heartbreaking that I shed a lot of tears. Until now it's one of the most heartbreaking moments in my life that I wish I could turn back the time that I was with them discovering things and doing adventures. This game gave me my life.

    This brings up a somewhat depressing thought. Zidan is immortal. I never really caught that when I was playing the game. This would mean he would enjoy some happiness with Garnet as things were at the end of the game, but what about 50 some-odd years later when he's still got the body of a 20 year old and he's now caring for a 66 year old Garnet in her decline of advanced age? How about going on later as he witnesses his friends and loved ones growing old and dying and leaving him behind? It's still not THAT bad, but it does present a few philosophical difficulties to ponder over.

    I would love love love love an episode on Freya! she honestly might be the single most under appreciated character in final fantasy ever! look at all the things that happened in this story. look at at all the things that directly involve her. look at the way she handles those things. she is the single most powerful example of a woman facing her reality head on and not giving into it! there is that scene where freya stands next to Beatrix (who slaughtered her country men) and fights along side her. she does it not because she wants to but because she knows it is what needs to be done. I really love freya so much for so many reasons and I really hope that the final fantasy community will recognize her as being one of the greatest ever!

      I had a sibling crush on her in my younger years. I had her in the party half of the time. even if she has emotions she's still awesome. even if I grown out of the whole crush thing. she's still one of the cool female characters. my sister was super emotional (half was because of her depression) but got inspired by Freya on keeping herself more together when it comes to real hard moments in life. like losing a pet dog. when she was younger she cried over 2 weeks. now she's passing through it better after playing the game for awhile when we have another pet passed away on us. and that's how cool Freya is to some people.

    When they were on the beach following Brahne's death, I always thought that was Vivi talking. Vivi was closer to the camera in that scene, and seemed to move at appropriate times during the dialogue. The narrator also said that Brahne 'stopped', a term Vivi used to describe death. Just me?

    • @IceDarkBen
      @IceDarkBen 5 лет назад +23

      Yeah, it's Vivi. In French version (based on the japanese), there's no doubt about it since the monologue is talked with a childish vocabulary. I did the french version before the english, so I was kinda shocked when I heard the author saying it's Zidane talking, but maybe it's unclear in English ? Even so, the questions asked are Vivi themed, about life and death, so I still think it's pretty obvious.

    • @sergionate8326
      @sergionate8326 5 лет назад +29

      It's Vivi talking. Its confirmed even in the english version later in a scene at black mages village, when Vivi talks about his confusion and impressions about life and death and compares what he felt on that beach when he saw Brahne die and the effect it caused on Garnet (and he was sad) with what his grandpa told him when he passed away.

    This vid made me see new things about Zidane and his growth that I never realized while playing. His development was more subtle. Stretching and spreading throughout the four discs. Growing from a goodie helping follower to a protective, mature leader.

      I agree characters can be many different things to have a development. they don't have to be depressed to prove that. emo's overrated in ff universe and there's ALOT of emo characters to count. is like "yeah I get it you want the characters to be "human" doesn't mean they HAVE to be ether depressed or annoyingly dumb as hell to be human." they need to get a hold of there selfs. and it's not just FF ether I also talking about shows, movies and books and also things outside of ff that does the same annoying thing over and over again.

  • @YuubiTimberwolf
    @YuubiTimberwolf 6 лет назад +45

    FF9 was my first FF game and is my fave, Zidane is a fantastic protagonist, while i never saw him as the main character, he was a side character, helping, but not that important to the story. Garnet/Sarah instead was the real deal, she was the most important person and the reason why everything was happening. At this point, Zidane was no better than Steiner, a guard and protector of the princess.
    This changed when Garnet drugged them, with the Princess gone and Burmica attacked, Zidane had to take action, he had to help the people of Freya and did so.
    He could chase after the princess and get her back, but he knew what was more important and grew slowly to a hero.
    The story turned, shifting the role of the important character slowly, almost secretly, from Garnet to Zidane. Suddenly, Garnet happend to be pulled into a story that has acually nothing to do with her. I was surprised when, before Queen Brahne death, i noticed this. Suddenly, everybody asked Zidane for guidance, for advice and looked up to him as a leader.
    Sure, he is a carefree, obvious woman chaser, a thief, a trickster, a joker...but he has a golden heart, a brotherlike attitude, a strong will and a power to change and grow, something Kuja only could do at the end of his screentime/life.
    Final Fantasy 9 is a game about questions, growing up and finding your place in the world...even when you where there all along, but could not see it.

    • @rawnorth7882
      @rawnorth7882 4 года назад +1

      Well said. Although respectfully i disagree with you on him being unimportant to the story up till Garnet/Sarah drugged them. He was vital; if it wasn't for Zidane then she would not have gone through the character development she did up till that point. So even if the story stayed exactly the same up till said point, without zidane the butterfly effect ensures there would be a completely different outcome after this

    Zidane Tribal will always be my favorite character in the Final Fantasy series. He is one of those characters that we all love because of his cheerful and caring personality. Also seeing him all broken and depressed ever since learning about his birth made me cry seeing a loving and sweet character being so down and broken thinking he's nothing but a killing machine. Thankfully his friends helped him to remind him that he's not a killer, but a sweet and kind man everyone loves very much. It's because of Zidane's kindness and showing his good personality to the people and friends he met on his journey, they changed a lot for they learned to help others and cast aside their sorrows. Plus the ending of IX will always make me smile and cry seeing Zidane be reunited with his love Dagger aka Garnet and his best friends. I remember I had a best friend who loves Zidane so much that she wishes for a Final Fantasy IX remake or an anime, she goes by the name Lindaru(now called Lindar). I've been her friend for ten to eleven years only for our friendship to end cause she couldn't talk to me anymore cause of what's going on where she lives. Sure I see her on Twitter even though I can't talk to her anymore cause she doesn't do messages anymore I'll never forget her and the memories we shared about our love to Zidane and Final Fantasy IX.

    thanks for the video, it was thanks to Zidane (chidan/jidan, wtvr) that I thought fullmeaningless in life. playing his story changed me for life.
    One thing that revealed his growth, one scene you didn't show, was when the party was confronting Kuja at the Tree, and Dagger was fearful for her mother. Zidane not understanding motherhood said: "she extracted eidolons from you and started a war! she doesn't care one bit if your alive or dead, YOU DON'T HAVE TO CALL HER MOTHER ANYMORE!" Dagger replied "she's my only mother I don't care if you don't understand" and Zidane was, spaced out, it was a shock to him! a wake up call to emotions, even if they don't make much sense.
    Also the scene when Brahne dies, I always thought the text was Vivi's thoughts because he uses the black mage vocabolary of "coming to a STOP at any moment" (stop=death black mage vocabolary). I always thought zidanes's thoughts weren't made in that scene, because he was confused, not understand motherhood, on the acount of the previous scene with dagger.
    Also, but you'd have to have studied medievel writting to know (european) on the inicial sight of the game, after the word Squaresoft appears at the main menu, that video shows map locations and events of the game (full motion videos) and you can notice some descrepancies with the english translation for some locations. One being The Iifa Tree: the name is not Iifa, the first "I" is actually a J - in medieval european writting, and the F is not an f at all, it's a letter no one uses anymore, and it reads "SS" (there's even an metion on the first harry potter book about it) - (I had a class on it in colleage) - thus it's Jissa Tree! - It makes more sense, because Jissa, is the islamic term for Jesus, and in the book of Apocalipse (square is know for taking ideas from religions and myths) There are several you would call Angels of Death - from the Fourth horseman to Abaddon and the King of Kings. Hence, it is "an Angel of Death sending Souls to the Tree of Jissa" - the line zidane says - no blasphemy intended, but it gives a little more content to the rich caracter of Zidane and the complexity of the Terra iconography and plot
    I loved your video, thanks

    Zidane is the best protagonist in the entire series, sure Cloud, Squal, Tidus, Terra, Cecil and Lightning look more cool, but the thief with a tail is the only protagonist that truly diserves to be love not just by Garnet, but by everyone around. He is the only protagonist of a FF game that can make you laugh and then touch your heart and make you cry, he has the most memorable quotes of any other character in the franchise. Every time I see the ending of this master piece, when Daga runs to him , and lets her pendant and crown behind just to give him a hug I think the same thing....that guy, more than any other protagonist in the franchise, truly deserves that hug.

    I wish the reveal of Zidane's nature as Garland's "Angel of Death" was built up a bit better. The game does a decent job of setting up his connections to Terra, but when it comes to the specific revelation of the character's role in all that, as well how earlier introduced antagonists Garland and Kuja tie into it all, it feels a bit forced. The reason being is that it feels a bit too coincidental, as Zidane was pretty far removed from all these machinations at the beginning of the game.
    Usually when you see stories pull the big twist where the hero has some connections with the main villains and/or are part of some grand plan, it's usually set up well enough that you'd believe the protagonist would likely get involved with those people again somewhere down the road. The more estranged they are (in this case, one plopping the other to a completely different part of the planet, with both of them originating from an entirely different WORLD), the more carefully constructed and convincing the build up has to be. But in FFIX, it's only through sheer coincidence that Zidane, of all people, would wind up reuniting with Kuja in the midst of the latter's evil plans and involvement with the queen's shenanigans.
    I'm not sure how they'd be able to do it with a bit of revising here and there, but if the story was done in a way where some force or something that was driving Zidane towards the truth, I think it wouldn't worked much better, because conceptually, the whole Terra section when taken on its own is pretty cool.

    • @Sawngawkuh
      @Sawngawkuh 6 лет назад +4

      I know it's a common trope, but as I stated before, a lot of these cases only seem coincidental on the surface, but are often more neatly set up (or in the case of Star Wars' Vader twist, just really conveniently aligned well enough that Lucas' idea only thought up later during the production of Empire worked well enough) that, when you look back behind everything that occurred before hand, it doesn't seem too ludicrous that these kinds of meetings would eventually take place. Basically, an established sense of inevitability to it all.
      In the case of Star Wars, we actually have a contrast between the more solid and bottle-of-lightning execution of the Vader twist where a lot of those elements (like Luke and Obi-Wan's relationship) were more or less already neatly interconnected enough (save for the convenience of the Droids falling into Owen's hands, which does strain some of its credibility) versus the Leia twist, which is actually considered somewhat contrived by some, because that one relies far more on the "It was the Force" excuse. Back in the day, it came off extremely hackneyed by comparison, as well as repetitive, because we had JUST gotten a big familial twist at the end of the last one.
      When it comes to FFIX, it just really needed that more carefully crafted set up. All the little bits of foreshadowing, and the Terra lore are cool enough, and the whole section on the world is pretty great when taken on its own, but if they had been able to craft a more believable build up for Zidane's place in it all, it could've been spectacular. Some think that it might be attributed to the sudden shift of the game's development from a throwback Gaiden title to a mainline FF installment, and that they may have felt that Zidane was becoming overshadowed by Garnet's plotline, thus they tried to come up with a way to have his place in the world be of major importance, but lacked the time to significantly revise earlier portions of the plot to make it seamless.

An obvious one would be romantic love, but you could do a ton of different ones like parenthood (Tidus and Jecht from 10 or Hope's parents and Sazh's struggles in 13), belonging (Terra from 6 or Squall from 8), or duty (Beatrix from 9, Celes from 6). If there was ever a Final Fantasy 9-2 I would want to see the main characters be a grown up Eiko, one of Vivi's children, Beatrix, Kuja, Steiner, Freya. I think it would be really poetic if Kuja and Zidane are both alive in a sequel, because what if abandoning their fears and the craving of power is what makes it possible for them to both live. I would want to see like a Lovecraftian influence and maybe the story is that this creature from an alternate dimension/reality kidnaps Garnet and Zidane and inhabits their bodies as it causes chaos and drains life from the planet leaving the kingdoms and planet in peril.

    Just finished FFIX today at long last (lost my save data back in the day so I bought the Switch version) and I’m very happy I did. The game is a masterpiece and just so beautiful. Will replay it again one of these days (with the intention of getting the best weapons and Ozma and such).

    My favorite FF male protagonist (followed by Locke, another thief!)
    I don't like boring characters such as Lightning, Squall, etc...
    Thanks for this!

      Squall is FAR from boring. Lightning I can understand, but not the Gunblade specialist.

      Squall was an introvert that got development unlike lightning

      litterally a 5 minute story but a good one at that. A once famed bandit who attempted to rob a train with his partner only to leave his wounded partner behind to escape the authorities. His remorse over the ordeal turned him apathetic. He married a Magi girl in Thamasa and had a daughter named Relm. He left his house and became a ninja for hire. The most notable action he took in ff6 was to try to trap Kefka in between the Warring Triad statues in turn saving Locke's party.

    I know that my opinion won't be very fair compared to many others, but I think Zidane is one of the most relatable characters in the PS1 Final Fantasy saga. I've played about 2-4 hours of VII and VIII and it's been quite some time since I played the first few games, and I found both Squall and Cloud to be too fixed on their ideas or stereotype, to the point of being a bit whiny and tedious. Zidane on the other hand has a bubbling personality whose many sides are shown to us right in the first hours of gameplay, and it really feels like he's matured after the journey he and his team undertake (is this verb correct?), adding layers of depth to an already likable protagonist (btw I'm not saying that Squall's or Cloud's personalities don't develop during their respective games). A bit like Tidus from FFX, but way more faceted and nuanced as a character. I liked the other episodes, but IX is my favourite, and Zidane is one of my favourite characters.

      I see what you're saying and agree on most things, but there's absolutely 0 way you're going to get a good idea of a character in FF7 or 8 in only 2 hours. Especially Cloud. I recommend at least reading up on Cloud as a character, he's a snarky jerk who becomes a scared and paranoid loser, and then becomes a pretty serious character with a bit of a goof factor in him. If you read up on the story it'd make sense as to why you probably didn't like him when he was first presented to you, you're being played in the writer's hand like putty

      Pretty sure its cause Cloud and Leon being older and actually suffering from real tragedy as their games even begin is why they are "stuck in their ideas". Cloud literally had someone in his party die and at the time he was moving past his fragmented psyche. Not understanding why everyone is all anti Cloud and Squall cause they aren't all bubbly
