Definitely agree, it's one of the best photoshoots/concepts on ANTM history. The 60's styling is immaculate and timeless.

I’m p sure the “broken doll” look is considered very high fashion. You just have to be broken in the right way I guess. 😂
There was one episode where the girls got to choose their own best picture and compare it to which one Tyra would have picked. It would be cool to hear your thoughts and comparing the two!

@@rollercoaster24 nahh... Seems like they got to choose the photo, but Tyra didn't correct them. I can't seem to remember which season it was on... Maybe I'm remembering it wrong and thinking about the one where they showed a retouched photo first and then the original. If no one else remembers this too...?
@@rollercoaster24 I spoke too soon! Yes It might be that one! They just go over everything so quickly in those first cycles... S2E2!
Cycle 18 also did a photoshoot where the models picked their own photos, but they weren't told which one was their "best".
Also Model Latina season 3 had the girls pick their own photos and it would be compared to what the judges picked
I find it really interesting that Jay tells two of the "worst" girls (blackout and traffic jam) to remember that "it's about the garment" and then the photos picked for those two don't really display the garment. And the judges make no comments about "selling the garment" which is usually one of their go-to criticisms when a girl does "poorly" on a shoot -- that she forgot she was hired as a model to sell clothing, not just take a pretty picture. Apparently this one is all about "embracing the theme" and not selling anything, despite what Mr. Jay said?
I was thinking the same thing. Great job getting this across.
They pick on whatever they want, confuse the girls, pick them photo that suits whatever narrative they wish to spoon feed us, and then one girl gets their dream’s crushed. I wish I picked up on this as a young girl.

The judges seem to contradict themselves and behave hypocritically over and over again across many/most seasons :\
They are so manipulative!! Marjorie's best shot is literally one of the first shots she took that Jay said wasn't pretty. And they didn't even choose the "spoon-fed" shots. That shot wasn't Jay's. That was her own. And he made her stop, causing her to go "too pretty" or whatever. But the panel likes it. My god...
I just made a similar comment.
Plus, when Jay did pose her he literally twisted her arm around in the wrong direction. Like...a broken Barbie Doll...
and tyra points that she liked that style and that marjorie only had a few shots till it went back to whatever they said. of course we dont see the full interactions but i hope marjorie said something after tyra made that comment

and it shouldn't matter how much effort went in to get the shot, all the viewer sees is the final image, not the process

I wasn't a fan of Clark, but to be fair, having "blackout" is definitely a LOT harder to interact with the set in a way that makes sense compared to some of the other disasters

That’s not a plot twist, we already know he has to spend hours in hair and makeup to pass for human 😂
Personally I think it would have been a much better formula if they presented 3 pictures of each model to the judges. Then the judges compare the pictures and explain what they think worked best out of the three. I think that would have been way more productive as the models could get some constructive advice!
But then I guess it would be harder to manipulate the result....
That would take too much air time each episode.
Silly rabbit this wasn't to help models. This was to exploit young kids with a dream for our entertainment and Tyra bag...

I remember watching this season and it always bugged me that Clark was a "Blackout". How are you supposed to show that other than playing with powerlines? Joslyn could've laid on the hill and rolled rocks down to create the "rockslide" but Clark trying to be a "blackout" is like trying to model as a sunny day.
And the way Tyra just yelled "Blackout" like that was some way to explain how it could have been modeled 🤣 What was she supposed to do? Act like she couldn't see?
This is exactly what I was thinking. How do you effectively portray "Blackout" without lights? I thought they'd have a string of lights or wire that she could play with, stretching, biting, or wrapping it around her. It could have made for a truly interesting photo.
It could have been a cool concept if they shot in the dark and spot-illuminated only her. Like this looming something illuminated only by lightning strikes you sometimes see in horror movies.
Sunny day would be MILES easier! 😂

I find it so funny how annoyed Mr. Jay gets at doing his job of Directing the girls or helping them pose. I was a photographers assistant on two photo shoots, and the photographer, the producer/ creative director, and sometimes the client, were all communicating with each other and the model about posing and changes. And no one was ever annoyed about asking for a new pose or directing them to pose a certain way. From what I remember also, there was never a set number of frames. The photographer shot until he or the client was happy. It still shocks me just how unrealistic the working conditions in this show are. It feels like these photo shoots only exist to abuse these poor girls instead of teaching and helping them advance.
hi! then what is the extent of a models job? I'm curious because Jessica always mentions what models are not supposed to do in a real job but I wonder if everyone is moving them (like the photographer, the client, the creative director, etc.) then what is their job? just to accept directions? maybe every once in a while come with their own poses? because then it sounds like an easy job (unless it is like a shoot that lasts for hours or under very bad weather conditions).

So the model job is to be a performer. They’re performing for a still frame. It is their job to emote and pose naturally depending on what the theme of the picture is. They basically need to be able to take direction and turn it into a believable performance (a picture that sells) and it’s not saying you they aren’t allowed creativity in their posing choices. It’s a joint effort with everyone on set. Like on a movie set when an actor gives a great performance, that performance was probably crafted through the direction of the director to hit all the right beats. It’s the same with modeling but with poses and not words.
And as someone directing a performance you never want to belittle or make the person feel bad because then they can’t relax and perform.

I have to admit that historically this wasn’t one of my favorite shoots on ANTM. But after hearing you talk about the ins and outs of this shoot, I’m looking at it in a new way. I have always loved the 60s styling though!

Annelise was hands down my favorite from this season. I saw her at Whole Foods one time 10 years later and I died. I wanted to go up to her but I couldn’t disrupt her just living her life.
This is probably my favorite photoshoot in the show. The styling was really cool, the concept was interesting, and occasionally Jay actually gave advice on set.
When Tyra has the 2 that might be eliminated "standing before her", she always gives the meaner critique to the girl she's keeping.
Hi Jessica, seeing how excited you were about the lighting, could you make a series by re-creating for favorite pictures lighting-wise (doesn't have to be ANTM). Watching the process could inspire us photographers to do the same and learn from it 🙏😊

You should comment on a photoshoot where they had Nyle posing in complete darkness. He is deaf so they basically took away his senses and couldn’t communicate with the photographer. Very messed up, in my opinion.
I think Jessica did react to that episode but because of copyright issues she couldn’t post it
I remember that! It was the only season I actually watched, specifically because of Nyle.
They also made a blind girl walk a runway in the dark

I could've sworn these girls have a specific amount of frames to shoot. So they have a set time. Even if they have a good shot in the first few, they still have to take the rest of them. And even if she did get the shot in the first few, if they didn't like her film altogether, they would criticize that. ANTM is literally "damned if you do, damned if you don't."

@@visualbeauty3427 yeah I think they all did great this week though. Honestly when they have good photographers then the girls do so much better. I just hate that they never put up every single persons best picture. They say they do but nope.
The episode before this is also one of the best photoshoots of ANTM. Wherein models were to pose with their faces partially underwater, with an emphasis on their eyes.
Tbh cycle 11 had great shoots! Natural Disaster, Smizing above water, Swimsuit, Yacht, Windmill etc. Great cycle

@@whatinthe1126 yes some of them got amazing themes but i felt like some girls like Lauren Brie, Sam, Elina and Sheena had more restrictive and difficult themes to pull off

The theory is 100% a thing - it gives them the "is she losing her spark?" nonsense story line.

I really liked this season of ANTM. The girls had some cool looks to them. I agree that choosing the photos to fit character archs/plotlines. It would be very easy to do because everyone would have good and not so good photos. Also, whenever a model suggests that they did have better photos, Tyra loses her mind and berates them. So they're trained not to say that, and the audience is trained to trust the process.
So, Jay insults Marjorie for looking like a broken Barbie Doll, but then goes and poses her like.....a broken Barbie Doll...
And then Tyra insults her for not doing more weird, contorted poses...which Jay told her not to do.
Very very bizarre! 🙄
I absolutely love your comments and appreciate your dose of reality. So many of us grew up with this show and thought it was reality. I love hearing you refute this narrative.
This is definitely one of the better photoshoots, the set was well executed!

I absolutely love the concept. I wanted to be in this photo shoot and be a natural disaster! I loved the 60s mod look I just really did love everything about this photo shoot. Probably my favorite photo shoot they have ever done.
Crime scene one would be cool, but she may have to do a trigger warning or even censor some of those shots because she might get demonetized 😬
I loved the concept of this shoot. Once or twice every Cycle, the photoshoot was fantastic.
This cycle had amaaaaazing photoshoots though! Its like the kept the best photoshoots for cycles 6,9,11, 15 and 16.
This was the best season of ANTM. The shoots… the models… I’d love to see you react to more of it. There’s a reason this season produced one of the most successful ANTM contestants ever

The photographer was Brian Edwards, easy one of my favorite photographers in top model. he also did the Immigrants that travelled to Ellis Island from cycle 12 and the Perfume Ad from Cycle 14 that you also reacted to!

The heatwave model literally did everything they critiqued her on in the photo so like I'm confused???

They are masters at gaslighting into believing them model did bad when she didn't just for show.
I remembered in McKey's interview with Oliver TwiXt when they discussed about why the judges choose a lackluster photo of McKey because of creative differences. McKey was thinking of slow burn (gradually building up) while Tyra was thinking of melting; that's why the judges chose that lackluster photo of her.
This episode coined the phrase getting Clark'd meaning getting FCO (first call out) one week then being eliminated the following week.
Nicole (Cycle 3) was really the originator of it, but I digress.
@@devontamosley4487 well technically Elyse from c1 but Clark's elimination was more noticeable cause she kept bragging about not being eliminated cause she had FCO the previous week.

I've never watched a single ANTM episode, but as a photographer, I found it really interesting to hear your commentary on it and the process as a whole. It almost makes me want to watch it for the photography aspect. Almost 😂
All the photos of the models came out amazing in my opinion! This is definitely my favorite shoot from ANTM.
Some were better than others but still, great over all
You should definitely react to some of the shoots from the college girls season. They REALLY seemed to have a narrative for each girl depending on where she went to school, whether she was kinda quirky, what her major/“type” was, etc. I feel like they made some girls look so absolutely insane and I remember they even pushed a few to tears/screaming matches after shoots due to how they kept being portrayed!! It was a seriously wild season (it did have some super neat photography though, like the steampunk train photo shoot with the owls was FIRE! 🔥)
Before I watch, I really hope you find another alternative to watch more episodes. You make my day all the time with your content, especially this!! Good luck!

In this cycle, there were many good photoshoots out there. I would recommend these episodes: Swimsuits in Malibu shot by Russell James (Episode 4), Fierce eyes above water (Episode 5 - my favorite so far!!!), and Windmill couture (Episode 12).

Jay's an expert and since he was so insistent on helping her, I feel he should have offered an interactive pose that looked like she accidentally stepped on a car. Like she's a clumsy giant barbie. 🤷🏾♀️ I don't know why, but I feel the traffic jam situation would have been great for that.

Those clothes were so cute, and a photo shoot that actually showcased the Mod Squad feel. You were so good, but we wore you down, so bye girl. I loved Paulina as a judge, she was so gorgeous, too gorg, for Tyra’s ego. They totally did Annaleigh dirty this season.

If I saw the photos out of context, I would think it was a Moschino Campaign. Very high quality comparing to many of the shoots on the show.
I think the only benefit for Jessica watching ANTM, is getting new ideas for future photo shoots, a benefit for us as viewers of Jessica, is learning about the real world of modelling and photography.
The ‘60s clothes and styling is timeless and a favourite!
I still remember this photoshoot to date. And I still can’t believe the feedback some of these girls were given during the shoot and panel. So ridiculous.

I loved this season. The models were all so interesting and fun!
Looking back on this show (thanks to your reactions!) I get the sense that the alleged “best shot” they show is actually the photo they feel evokes the entire performance that specific model gave, since the way they were on set seems to matter a whole lot to the judges, in addition to the photo, hence why Tyra says “there were better shots than this, but they still weren’t telling the story.” If a model had REALLY great shots for the entire duration of that shoot I think they often do pick the actual best shot, so it is kind of a way to keep pushing that narrative of “who was America’s next TOP model?” I wish we could have seen their actual best photos!!
Imagine if they made one girl they hate the most wear the godzilla costume while others are looking good and pretty.
They've definitely done that multiple times. Heather being "weeds" comes to mind. There was also Celia being called old all the time, then they photograph her in gray paint/ dust that made her look much older. And the girl they called fat who was Gluttony and an elephant.

I think they bring up the same storyline for the girls so Tyra does not have to remember a bunch of speeches, because they are all just recycled with a slight twist ;) Love your content, been binging your AMNT-videos lately and just soaking up your fun and educational commentary!

Overall this was one of my favorite shoots as well. The concept was amazing.

If it’s true that these ANTM videos are going to stop soon then Jessica neeeeeds to watch episode 5 from this same cycle with the models in water. This cycle had the best photoshoots by far and that one in particular is great!

This was a fun concept of photos. I did enjoy this video because not a lot negative towards this episode or anything said. It seem like a fair panel of feedback. Is it perfect, no but it look fair to watch.
