    Fantastic install Tom, I installed a pair a couple of years ago It ended up in the middle of the garden the wife loves walking around it 😂. I don't have an observatory But it saves carrying that tripod around all the time.

    Well done Tom. You made a decision I've been hesitant to make (installing a pier). And thanks for making me aware of this brand of pier. Most of them I've seen seem grossly too expensive to justify - this seems realistic.

      Hi Larry, thank you, it was something I have been thinking about since day one in the observatory and I must say I was not sure if the price point was good but I really liked the look of this and the build quality is smashing. Big old welds on it. That thing would stop a truck 😂

    I'm considering installing a pier this summer or autumn so this video has been very useful. I was thinking of the Altair pier and you have made my mind up.

    Great stuff. I bought one of these last year. I put mine on a 500Kg poured concrete block using the J bolt option set into wet concrete (no obsy so just in garden). Also as I am not using the centre hole I filled the pier with 50Kg of stone aggregate for extra stability (and stops it ringing like a church bell). I lowered the top plate so the gap is a small a possible but still allows tightening of the mount bolt but allows me to use the gap to put my mini pc. Holds eq6-Rpro and counterweights and I take the scope in after use but saves a lot of time over tripod. I keep it under a Telegizmo + another cover all weathers. A lot easier than the concrete columns route as you can adjust the top in azimuth and level at any time after it is installed and is transportable if you have to move house.
    Mixing concrete using a paddle mixer is exhausting !

      Great 👍 thanks for commenting, yours sounds like it could survive the apocalypse, when my dogs hit the pier with their tails it really does ring 🤣 I’m going to put some kiln dried sand in today which will stop any extra vibrations, mixing with the mixer on a drill is sooo much work, I bet you slept well after that 👍

    Hi Tom , I’ve had my pier a few months but not put it in yet, getting old & wearing out so I need to get somebody to put it in for me ! The reason we love your videos as most of us can identify with you just a bloke in the garden loving his hobby etc .. not trying to make it as difficult as we know it can be, at this pointing out pixel size per this and that ! And if we get a decent image we are more than happy .. good luck with the mono set up I have the 533 mm pro & although I still struggle a bit in processing I absolutely love seeing those mono images especially hydrogen coming through ! As I said the subscriber for awhile.. keep up the great work .. Richard’s Astrophotography

      Hi Richard, thanks for commenting, I must say having the pier now has made life so much easier and the room is fantastic. Thanks for your nice comment I try to keep the channel as simple as possible, it can be so confusing I just want people to know it feels that way at the beginning but once you have a few months under your belt the telescope is the easy part it’s understanding what your looking at that becomes the challenge 👍 good luck with your pier install I hope someone can help you

    Hi Tom
    Just came across your channel. I too have the same roof shed, I assume you got from sheds sheds.
    I installed a concrete pier, however I wish I thought more on trying to get 2 piers offset.
    I have automated the roof using a gate motor, happy to share with you on how I did it.
    I also have a clearance issue with the roof, but I reset my park position to horizontal.

    Great video Tom, and nice job with the pier, you will find that much better and give you more room, also with those hollow piers, it’s a good idea to fill with sand, kiln dried sand, stops every little vibration, I have a pier similar to you.👍🏻

      Thanks Stuart, the space is great in there now. I’m so pleased it all worked out. Great tip on the sand too, that’s a fantastic idea. I’m just about to sit down and watch your new vid now 👍 talk soon mate. Clear skies

    Awesome video and lovely pier !! You can mount one of those light drawing tablets on the wall for your flats now that you have a fixed position for the C11. Looking forward to the next vid! Glad you're enjoying making content so much!

      Thanks for commenting, I thought about that a while ago and wasn’t sure what to do, but then I found a 16 inch studio light that works really well so I use it for my videos and my flats now 👍 I love making the content for you guys and of course myself, I didn’t think it would be so enjoyable

    Congrats with your pier! When I made my pier, a concrete suwerpipe filled up with concrete with a by my specs short pier extender, I bought the wrong pier plate for my mount. So more or less the same misstake like you made. I think we all want to be to quicke not to mis out on a clear sky ;)

      @Learn_astrophotography  3 месяца назад +2

      Thanks Rob, that’s exactly what I was going to do with the concrete 👍 I was just to worried of messing it up. This seemed like a safe option and I did really enjoy the install. I’m going to get the pier adapter this week hopefully. Yeah I was just so keen to get the scope back on and get imaging 😂

    • @Learn_astrophotography
      @Learn_astrophotography  3 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for the comment, I don’t know how to do that, I have looked a little into it but with the starsence auto guider it just asks me to load my last position which I am assuming is almost the same as parked. I will definitely look more into this though. Thank you 👍

    Excellent stuff Tom. I've just bought three of the Altair piers for my rigs. I was all set to make them out of concrete but came across the Altair pier and liked the look of it so went with that instead.

    Very nice video Tom and great job! Losing the tripod makes the space feel so much bigger and less chance of accidently kicking the rig when checking something in the dark!

      Hey Dave, thanks for the comment. It feels amazing in there now and no shake either 🥳 I’ve definitely stubbed a few toes on that bloody tripod 😂
