I would highly recommend playing about with NINA when the weather is bad and getting a feel for it. Its not as complicated as it seems and is actually very user friendly in my opinion. Plenty of tutorials on setting up your gear, sequencer etc and once you're set up a night of imaging is as easy as 4 clicks. Connect all equipment-> click on your sequencer -> select a target from the list -> start. And of course as we know nothing ever goes wrong in astrophotography so it will definitely be four clicks 😅
Nice video and setup. I've been seriously astro imaging for 10 yrs. In-between clouds and rain. I have recently bought the SS50 from ZWO. This little smart telescope is such a game changer. When you only have a short periods, of clear sky. My main imaging rig is a pier mounted G11 Gemini 2 and AA 115EDT with an ASI294MCPRO.
Hi Tom, New sub here as you have my dream OTA setup there! I have been doing AP for four years now, I always had a passion for space and science, but it was when I saw Astrobackyards M31 capture seeing it was actually possible from the back garden that was it for me. I don't really have a favourite however I find galaxies more amazing knowing they are completely separate from our own and the distances involved just crazy. I am also just starting my NINA transition its going to be interesting
Thanks for the comment and sub! I also love galaxies, I’m still so new I just want to do it all so much, once you have successfully captures your first you get hooked 😊 I hope Nina will be a nice smooth transition for you too 👍
Hi Tom, Thanks for the video. At the moment I'm waiting till darkness, I live in Spain (Galicia) and this night is the first clear night in weeks now. I started, I guess in 2017. Bought my telescope an used an Canon EOS 7d to image. Then I was stil living in the netherlands, and had to go everytime out of the city (Breda). I Always forgot how to do everything because I had so little night to use the telescope. Back then I used APT, It never worked for me. Now in Spain I live rural (bordle 3 to 4) and have a telescope pier. Also now I use N.I.N.A. I can highly recoment thet to you, it works great! Time to polar aline ;) Regards, Rob.
Thanks for the comment. The clear nights have been so far apart for a long time it’s easy to forget, I also used a dslr to start with and I really struggled but that was just due to not knowing enough. I’m really looking forward to using Nina, I just wish we had a few days clear in a row so I don’t feel like loosing out. I’ll be putting my pier in soon too, it should be a game changer. It sounds like you have a great setup 👍
Another great video Tom! Loved the image you produced. I have to say imaging with hyperstar and/or a RASA is one of my favorite things to do. I started astronomy when I was 9 years old and have been imaging now for over 25 years of you don’t count the really early years either black and white film. My favorite objects are M42 the Orion Nebula and M81 galaxy. But to tell the truth I love them all. It’s magical to produce your own versions of these objects and spend nights under the stars. Best regards Luis from NY
Hey Luis, thanks for the comment. I was so close to buying the RASA but wanted to still look through the scope with an eye piece. Wow 25 years you must have seen some big changes in that time? It’s hard to say a favourite, M81 and Orion are great targets though I love to image M81 and M82 in the same frame they look awesome 👍
Great video Tom. +1 for NINA. As for how long I've been into the hobby, 40+ years interest in astronomy and 30+ years on and off astrophotography. As for my favourite target...that's a tough one but something that never gets old is seeing the Pleiades rising out of the north sea (I live on the north east coast of Scotland) during the second half of the year. It's a nice reminder that the autumn targets are on their way.
Very nice image Tom. I'm interested in the use of narrow band filters with a OSC camera but I am saving my pensioner pennies for a mono camera, filter wheel, filters etc. I signed up for the ZWO eco system mainly due to the cost and the ASIAir controls everything seamlessly. Sure, I'd like to use other cameras etc but with 2 hobbies that need deep pockets, AP and boats (I have 4) I have to be realistic. I also have to carry the rig at least 50 metres but more often a few kilometres so the AM5 was a no brainer for me. My favourite targets are M51 and the Rosette Nebula but they're all good in one way or another. Would like to do some southern hemisphere imaging though . . .
Thanks for the comment. Narrow band filters are so much fun but I feel I need more clear nights to go through my filters and collect enough data. They are expensive hobbies especially boats 😂 my mum was always paying out loads for hers. I would love to go away to the southern hemisphere for a few weeks to get some great images. I love m51 too and it’s a nice easy one to image 👍
1 - moving to a bortle 3 and seeing the milkyway in my driveway. 2 - M42 Orion. I've always loved the Orion constellation since I was a kid. 3 - 18 months and I'm still terrible. I'm learning that my skills don't allow me to use free software like siril and get the same images as I would with Pixinsight and BlurX / NoiseX.
Thanks for the comment. Fantastic seeing the milky way with the naked eye, we are privileged to live in bortle 3 areas. Orion is amazing it’s such a great nebula and I’m sure your not terrible, 18 months is so new I’m not even at a year yet and I feel like I’m bad at this hobby at times but I don’t really care, I love it to much to stop 😊
Great video Tom, lovely image as well, I have always loved astronomy, made loads of mistakes ie equipment, wrong stuff brought disappointed with it, technology I'm the same, i.e., use the asiair and that is all I need at the moment. I have a osc camera and I want to get into narrow band because of light pollution, but its a mine field for me, but I'm going to pop into Altair astro next week and see what I can get, looking forward to your next video thats if we get any clear night's.
Thanks Bill, I love the ASI Air it’s great, it’s not a bad thing making the mistakes though, I know it’s frustrating to start with but good to learn from them. I’ve made a fair few already and sure I’ll make plenty more 😂 yeah let’s hope we get some clear nights soon 🙏
Hi Tom. Great image! Very nice job. Newcomer to your channel, so forgive me if you've already addressed this question. Have you found that when using the Celestron Dew Heater ring (I use it with my EdgeHD 8 but without a Hyperstar) that the stars get spikey? If so, have you done anything to minimize it? I"ve reduced the aggressiveness of the Celestron Dew Controller to 2 for the Heater ring and it helps but doesn't completely eliminate the problem. Just curious if you see this with a Hyperstar. Thanks again for the great videos!

Thanks for the comment. Yeah the seestar s50 is a great scope and great fun when the suns out too. You have a great rig 👍

Another great video Tom, and a cracking image at the end…stick with NINA, you will be glad you did in the end….👍🏻
Thank you again, I can’t wait to start using it. How are you getting on with the new test camera? 👍

Fantastic 40 years is amazing and great target too, sounds like heaven watching Pleiades rise from the north 👍

Thank you ☺️ I’m gong on there at the moment to familiarise myself with it all. Thanks 👍
Hi Tom, can I ask what mount you are using. Also great video again.
Hi Glenn, thanks for your comment 👍 I use the Celestron CGX mount for the C11 I also have the ZWO AM5 for my Williams optics and a AVX for my C8
