Before you guys ask... Why aren't you using a light pollution filter like before? Long story short, I would be, but I didn't bring the 100mm Kase Neutral Night with me to Turkey. Didn't you mention you were going to start autoguiding? Yes, I bought an Asiair kit with guiding scope and everything but didn't get a chance to try it yet and didn't bring it to Turkey with me (as I didn't bring my Sky Watcher Star Adventurer either).
@@DerrickSandy I didn't bother. Partly because I'm lazy but also because I've never seen a big reward when using a mirror less/DSLR. Definitely worth it with astro cameras though
@@socialwebwiki Star Adventurer has a ST4 port to which a small guide camera can be attached. Its one of the reason I'm going to purchase one over Star Adventurer Mini which lacks that port and has weight capacity of only 3kg compared to Star Adventurer 2i which is at 5kg.
weighting your mount slightly heavy against the direction the worm is traveling in improves tracking slightly. this is true of virtually all eq mounts. impressive results at 400mm
holy crap. same here. that sure would have come in handy when I got a new wedge and the #s were a little off and took me forever to figure out why I wasnt seeing polaris
Same here. But they do mention it on the manual, albeit in a cryptic way: "Quick Polaris finder", pointing at not well identified point in the image (page 5, ref. 6:)
Amazing results Alyn! The Orion Nebula came out great, I would be ecstatic to get a photo close to that quality. I just bought a SA Pro and living in the Southern hemisphere I'm finding it extremely difficult to polar align as the stars used for a SA PA are not very bright at all
Great review thanks, had SWSA for 4 years was not aware of the hole on the side, always struggled to align Polaris, what a great tip..................thanks.
One of the best vloggers out there. Quality, contents, and voice are excellent. Easy to follow along and understand. I have decided to purchase a Star Adventurer. Thanks Alyn!
Really cool, I just ordered my mini and waiting trying to learn more about it. I am also happy that you reviewed this in my home country, one of the most beautiful landscapes in Turkey butterfly valley.
I've found that any changes you make in the app are then set to that on the main dial eg. If you set a certain number of shots for sidereal and you then use the star tracking on the dial it will stop after that number of shots has been taken
A just in time vlog as I just received my Star Adventurer 2. Appreciate the details on your setting up. One issue I have is I can’t balance it on both sides when I have the telephoto out.
Really good looking results. I like the timelapse shot from the second camera of the setup with the out of focus starscape sliding past. That's a neat effect and sets the mood very nicely.
I've been thinking of getting into DSO. I own the Sony 100-400 and the 200-600. Your video has helped develop a plan for my first few tries at this. Would you recommend a doublet in the 60-72mm range over the Sony lenses?
Many thanks for this video. I have just received a 2i after waiting seemingly ages because of the current shortages of almost anything. Really looking forward to giving it a go. As I live in blighty it could be months before we get a clear sky…
exactly THE video I was expecting to go beyond my tripod. I have nice Orion molecular complex photos but need to take hundreds of 2,5 sec to get something acceptable
I've been using the series 1 star adventurer pro, with a william optics zenithstar 61 an flat 61 with a Canon 800D unmodified... I have had to add an extra counterweight for ballance, and have managed so far to squeeze 90 second subs unguided... That's my next step guiding, so look forward to your astrovlog on guiding with this portable setup.... Clear skies...
Although I don’t understand your information, the images in the heavens brings me to subscribe! We are viewing what God created! Alone, it’s beautiful! I enjoy the pictures. Thanks for sharing this gift you’ve been given!
I love the entire Orion complex. Alot of great targets. I recently found a new one while zooming in on Stellarium. If you go a little bit above Alnitak toward Betelguese, there's a smaller reflection nebula called M78. I couldn't see it in your wide field shot at the 2:00 mark of the video. But I think it's pretty small compared to all the other targets in Orion.
Thoroughly enjoyed this - particularly the tip about the ‘polar sight’ which I have never yet used! Question : at 6.40 on the video you do your final precise polar alignment having framed your target. You you check your polar scope clock to put Polaris exactly on the reticule. How do you know where to put it? The reticule clock on the app shows 0 at the top and 6 at the bottom ( where it would be when you did your rough polar alignment). But by now you have rotated in RA and the reticule will now be offset. Hope this isn’t a stupid question and you understand the point I’m making. I’ve been using the SA for 4 months now and struggle to understand how, at this final stage you know where to put Polaris based on the clock utility within the app. Thanks for sharing your video 👍
Excellent video. I have all this to look forward to as I have recently purchased an iOptron tracker which I am still working out how to use. The two biggest issues for me at the moment are: 1. Lockdown. 2. Clouds! But spring is coming and hopefully with that more frequent clear skies and at least a relaxed lockdown which allows me travel to some darker skies. Cheers, I'll look forward to the editing videos as I am still learning that as well.
Great targets and great images. I've got the SA 2i my self and looking forward to the dark season. As a beginner I will start out with the Flame and Horsehead complex. They are easy to find in the sky. Thanks for sharing! All the best from Norway!
Hi Alyn. Are you able to link to where you got the cable that runs from your Sony camera to your Star Adventurer tracker? I've got a Sony A6400 and would like to purchase this cable for when I get the tracker.
Lovely images as ever Alyn, really shows the benefit of some good skies and a decent polar alignment on the star tracker. I can also testify to the poor performance of an unmodified camera having spent many nights getting more and more frames of the Orion MC area at 50mm, and getting nothing like what you have produced.
Awesome video Alyn! I got my 2i a month ago but only been able to take it out once. Thanks for the tip about the little hole on the side to line up Polaris. Failed to notice it 😂
Great results Alyn, must be nice to have such dark skies. By the way, you should definitely be getting better keeper rate with that setup I'd recomend checking the calibration on the polar scope for the star adventurer you'd be surprised at the difference if it is in fact in need of calibration. Also, maybe in this case you didn't have a choice because of the issue seeing Polaris but I'd recommend keeping the tripod as low and leveled as possible. I think your rate should be closer to 80 to 90% for so short exposures.
I am excited to try this too as I just got the new 2i but have not yet had a clear night to try. I have the Sony a7Riii and would really like to know the exact settings on the camera to link up with the Star Adventurer 2i via wifi to be able to use their app. Lastly, I noticed some bowtie type of shapes in the brighter stars, is that from the extreme edge of the lens or is this a normal expected result of the 100-400 lens? Thank you very much!
Hi Alyn Great video. I bought a Vello Shutterboss 4.0 for the Sony A7RIII (correct version) for Sony but it did not work. I’ll check out the pixel. Is the SNAP cable from the Pixel?
I have an 2i on the way. Have you had a chance to do a video about the SAM yet? I've read alot of yay and nays about the program. I have a 2.5yo android. Hoping it will connect fine. My pentax K70 has a built in intervalometer but doesn't work on bulb mode and manual is the usual max 30secs. Any tips using it? Thanks!
Interesting vlog as always. Looking forward to your thoughts on the 'connected' features of the SA2. For now I'm sticking with separate controls for my camera.
Awesome work Alyn! I’d like to have a go at basic tracked astrophotograhy, would you recommend one of the inexpensive clockwork trackers, like the Omegon minitrack? Just a half decent shot of Andromeda would be awesome👍
I've recently mcgyvered my cg1 mount in to a tracking one with constant voltage supply and increased the accuracy of the tracking controller as well as fitting a voltmeter over the motor for accurate measuring. Despite all this, some shots were sharp and some had trailing as I approached 60 seconds (stock it's good for about 10). I thought the motor or internals were cheap and nasty but then you've just gone and said the star adventurer has a similar problem! Is it known what causes the random trailing?
Hi there, I'm somewhat frustrated as I cannot get anything over 28 seconds with the Astro time-lapse mode. Astrophotography Celestrial/Solar/Lunar modes do nothing. How do you get it to work?
Hi Allyn... i have seen your landscape pics and those are wonderfull... I think you have reach the point to get a Fast astrograph telescope....you may see the Redcat 51 or the Askar Acl 200.... those been around 200mm are better choice for the Star adventurer... the sharpness and the fast focal ratio will give much better images than those from the Sony zoom... Cs.
Hey Alyn, Thanks for the vid. Can I ask the name of your intro music? I'm a bit like Pavlov's dog though I don't salivate when I hear the tune but certainly gets me thinking about my next astrophotography trip! :)
Gears never provide perfectly smooth motion. This is normal for trackers. Had I shot at 200mm the periodic error would be much less of an issue. Also you can drastically redu s periodic error by auto guiding
My witch head project was an utter failure (3 days ago) with my canon 60D LOL, 50x50 seconds is just nowhere near enough. I need at least 4x more exposures and longer ones, like 180 seconds each. I didn't realize how faint it is. Next time!
amazing results man!! I'm really looking forward to the weather clear out so I can try new setups and ideias.. About the tracker, which do you recommend for using 200mm lenses? the Move Shoot Move, or the Star adventurer you are using?
Wouldnt you be better off loading the tracking gears with a bit of load ? Eg, dont fully balance. Leave a small amount of load for the tracker to lift up against and fully mesh the gears, ie, no lash ?
Before you guys ask...
Why aren't you using a light pollution filter like before?

When stacking did you still use darks and flats or these not needed with tracked images?
@@DerrickSandy I didn't bother. Partly because I'm lazy but also because I've never seen a big reward when using a mirror less/DSLR. Definitely worth it with astro cameras though
Sorry I don’t get it. How you can use an autoguiding on this setup?

i know next to nothing about this stuff, but your videos really help me! thanks so much :)
Breathtaking shot of the Orion region.
The images came out great! Especially the 55mm. I need to try that just so I can locate and pinpoint targets better. Nice work
Beautiful Shots Of Orion. Definatly my Favourite Constellation👍🔭🤩🤩
I..didnt know about that hole on the side that makes polar alignment so much easier. Thanks
I am just getting my setup and this video really inspired me, especially since I have the Sony a7iii. It gives me real hope. Thank you!
