It is a 40-minute walk to Holetown beach and a 15- minute walk to Sandy Lane Beach (both beaches north of Paynes Bay). I took the bus from Holetown, an easy 5-minute ride to Paynes Bay, for only $3.50 Bajan ($2.00 CAD). I am a budget traveller and the bus is good value, efficient, and easy-to-access.
There are plenty of amenities, restaurants, beach rentals, sports rentals. Beach chairs can cost up to $20/day US$, depending on which beach you are on. The operators will look after your items while you are away from your chair. If you come back daily, they will even reserve the best spot on the beach for you! Sometimes, you can negotiate the fee, if you are a frequent customer.
I am a budget traveller and stay for 2 months in self-catered apartments. I keep costs down by bringing my own beach mat, rather than renting a chair. I bring a picnic, rather than going to a restaurant. Bringing my own lunch allows me to find a quiet beach spot, away from the crowd. There are plenty of trees for shade.
TIP OF THE DAY: BE CAREFUL OF WHICH TREES YOU SIT UNDER!
Manchineel trees are poisonous, and are usually marked with a warning sign. These trees grow on many Caribbean islands including Barbados. The sap, leaves and the fruit, little green apples, are all poisonous. Ingesting an apple can cause instant swelling of the throat and possible death. Contact with the sap can cause blistering of the skin and blindness if contact with the eyes!
Do not take shelter under these trees if it is raining; water dripping from the leaves can blister the skin. Oh my goodness, in 5 more days I'll be there with my husband for our first vacation in 5 years.
