Peterson Stroboclip HD Tuner Review and Comparison to Original Stroboclip

- I absolutely LOVE the new Peterson Stroboclip HD Tuner that has replaced the original Stroboclip Tuner. The new tuner is much more consistent and reliable compared to the original. This is especially true on instruments with a quick decay like banjos and mandolins. In this video I explain some of the differences between the 2 tuners and give you a hands-on experience with a banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar, and 5-string electric bass. The new HD tuner performs extremely well with all 4 instruments.
The suggested retail price on the new Peterson Stroboclip HD is $59.99.

Great demonstration! I've had my original for 10 years or so; it's held together with tape & rubber bands but still works. I think it's time to get a new HD.
I have been using the old one on my mandolin for years and it has never failed.
I have the new StroboClip HD. It is fantastic. I did have a hard time updating the firmware. Windows and Linux wouldn't recognize it. But when I plugged it into my Macbook Air, I was able to update the firmware to the current 1.0.6.
Great comparison. Thanks. I've just bought the HD because of your review. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Cheers.
Great review. I have the same issues with my stroboclip and the B string on my banjo. I thought it was just me!
Thank you for a very informative comparison!
Thanks for doing the comparison. I have had a couple of the original Stroboclips and was never happy with them, especially compared to the StroboPlus HD I have. I am gonna get one of these new StroboClip HDs.
Excellent comparison....much appreciated!
I used the original strobe clip but could not get used to it and tuning was really difficult. In the end I used another tuner (korg) and found out that the clip part of the peterson clip has broken off without using the clip for years. The korg wasn't very accurate so I now got a tc electronics polytune which appears really accurate and my guitar sounds a lot better. I will keep an eye on the new stroboclip and will probably get one when the polytune breaks. Looks like peterson made the new clip a lot better.
Excellent comparison review. Would be great to put the Snark and the new Petersen head to head in a comparison also. I find that I grab my Petersen more times than I do my Snark these days. Thanks!
Thank you. Everything I wanted to know.
I have modified my tuner so it was easier to use the function buttons, made a HUGE difference by adding a 1/8" extension to the center button.
Don’t think I’ve thanked a reviewer before. Thanks. Gonna price and probably purchase one.
Glad to help. Let me know if you have any questions.
Great review
Thanks for the video, I have the original but would now consider this one as a replacement. Cheers.
Thanks for the review Brian. My original kills batteries quick if I don't take them out. Tunes very accurate after you get used to it. I said I'd not buy another Peterson because they would never return emails and didn't want to help with the battery issue. It is accurate. Maybe since your review I will try the new one. Double E on the hangout. ☺
I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I haven't had any battery issues so far and everything works much better on the new HD model than the original. The evidence is pretty obvious in the video. I love the new one!
Quite Right.... I have both tuners, and you confirmed exactly what I was just thinking...🤔.. .. Jeff McCook
Hey Bryan...thanks for the review. I have a question. On Amazon there are reviews of this tuner that are saying
that the buttons (off & on ?) are impossible to see or feel. I was interested in buying this because my Snark is very
tempermental. What do you think ?
The power button is in the middle of the three buttons. It is raised higher than the other two and has a raised rubber tip that you can feel. Many remote controls for televisions are like this too so you can find a button in the dark. I have no problems with the power button. The only issue I could see is if you have REALLY large fingers that you may accidentally press more than one button at a time. My fingers are small, so I don't have that problem.
thanks...I also have an issue with my B string showing up as G on my Snark
Very good... thanks!!
Thank you for the comparison Brian! I own the Strobo Rack & Strobo Plus & I wanted the Clip-On for Double Bass/Electric Bass but was hesitant because I thought It wouldn't track as well but you erased my doubts!
Great review, thank you! Is there any risk of the material of the clip interacting with a nitro-lacquered headstock? You know, like rubber-coated guitar-stands can interact with nitro.
Jesper T there’s always a risk. However, I haven’t had this issue, nor have I heard of anyone else having it with a Peterson clip-on tuner. The best thing to do is to remove the tuner from your headstock when you are not using it. Only by leaving it attached for days at a time would there be enough time for the chemicals to react and mar the finish.
Thanks for your answer!
Hi Bryan ,
What setting do you have it on for the hd clip on , for the 5 string bass? Mine has an issue picking up the low B quickly , and I’m wondering if i have it on the correct preset
that low B string can be finicky on any tuner. Try playing the harmonic note by laying your finger on the string at the 12th fret. That usually works for me.
@@bryanhaywood1 thanks so much !
Bryan, did you tap tuning the head with the new HD?
That's a good question. I haven't tried it yet. I'm not sure if it will work or not. If it does, I'll make another video to demonstrate.
Just to be fair: did you put the original stroboclip in SUSTAIN mode? I did this recently and it made a big difference in old stroboclip!
Yes, I tried the sustain mode. I think that my original stroboclip was faulty based off of some other comments. In any case, I've use the HD exclusively and is the best tuner for me.
in your new stroboclip hd, do you also see an imprint of the sustain mode on the display when you view at certain angles? but in the instructions theres none saying how to activate it
Does anyone have trouble with the sweetened settings on the HD? I use the GTR setting for my electrics which I play most of the time and I have no problems. But if I switch to the ACU option for acoustics it is in dropped tuning- not what I want! I guess it is something I have done with my stubby fingers but I can’t get back to the factory defaults even when I press the + and - buttons simultaneously.
Thanks..good review! I would buy the pedal/desktop version but it has a bunch of wonky controls and a rechargeable battery I don't like and I think it has a lot of overkill functions. It's a shame as nothing else seems available. So anyway I ordered this cuz of your review...I'm holding you to it! hahaaa
JJWalker I think you will like it. Make sure to register it on Peterson’s website and install the updates. It will make it turn on much faster. You can also set up your preferred sweeteners and set up how long it sets idle before turning odd automatically.
They ship with outdated firmware? hmm... Yes it looks pretty cool. I really wanted a desktop/stomp model cuz the regular clip d'addario's work great for just tuning/jamming but the peterson stomp/desktop just turned me off with all the crazy dial in settings. I'm a tech by trade and the last thing I need is something else to program. I know I could just ignore a lot of the functions but if they are there I will play with them. I purposely have vintage Fender amps with limited dials and I choose pedals that have basic dials with good tone. I'm still looking for a desktop version for intonating guitars...anyone else make such a beast for not a fortune?
Peterson doesn't ship with outdated firmware I don't believe. However, if you purchase from another vendor that's had it sitting on a shelf for a while it might be outdated. See how you like the Peterson and go from there. The ability to go online and customize your product is pretty cool. I was able to remove the features I wasn't interested in and make the tuner much more user-friendly for my purposes. I didn't need tuning sweeteners for 80 different instruments, so I removed all but 5. I can always put them back if I want to later. These customizable options also come with their other products. I'm sure there's one out there for you.
That sounds cool. I hate extraneous stuff on musical gear. Do you know if the stomp pedal is better - does it work any better than the vibration mode clip?
Sorry, I haven't used the stomp petal. I primarily play acoustic instruments.
Hey Bryan - I bought the HD but I find it takes about 3 seconds after turning on to be ready for tuning. How's yours go?
I know, I'm 4 years late, but update the firmware and it will turn on much faster.
I just purchased this tuner, (Jan 2020) and did a side-by-side comparison with my Snark SN-8. My Snark was Brighter, Easier to Read, Tuned just as Accurate & Held the display longer - (without having to re-pluck the strings). Not for me I guess. I wanted to love this product, but was very disappointed & UnImpressed.
Have you tried the guitar sweetener on the new Peterson? I just ordered the HD earlier tonight.
Just bought one of these having been 'sold' the idea of perfection with the task of setting up my intonation with some trepidation. Out of curiosity, used it against my usual method i.e. a tuning fork in E I bought for 60 pence at a boot sale and my ears. I'm not pitch perfect by anyones standard. It was bang on. Would use it in a live/stage set up otherwise it and they just hinder you developing your hearing which is pretty useful when playing music.
