Hi Aaron, thank you for the review of the Peterson StroboPlus HDC. I'm SO GLAD you did the singing demonstration with the tuner. That's what I'm most interested in using it for, and I wanted to see how the display looks when singing into the unit. I'm very impressed with that.
I'm much less impressed with the metronome display. Yes, it can do a lot of different beats, and that's good. But what it displays and how the display looks is most important to me. I am disappointed that the display has the current tempo (which doesn't change while you're playing) in big numbers, and the numbers counting off the measures (which changes as you play) are much smaller. It should be the other way around! I want to see big numbers moving as the music moves! (It's not necessary to have the current tempo in such large numbers.) And it should also have the option to count off beats, not just measures. So it would display 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 (or whatever the time signature is). I once had an Indian-made "tabla machine" that did this, with LARGE numerals (it could display 1- 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9 - 10 - 11 - 12 - 13 - 14 - 15 - 16, or any other count) and it was BY FAR the most useful metronome display I've ever seen or used. It is very unfortunate that the Peterson doesn't appear to numerically count off the beats, and that it displays the measure count off in such small numbers.
I bought one. It’s the first product that I’ve actually HAD to read the manual because it’s the least intuitive thing to use that I’ve ever bought! It certainly tunes well but man, it’s surprisingly complex for a tuner!
That’s because it does a lot BUT if you just turn it on then it’s just a standard tuner. Pretty flexible.

I learned a lot from your video. So, I purchased a StroboPLUSHD a few years ago, it went kaput-I could not power it up no matter what I did with the power supply etc. it was out of warranty (I did register it upon purchase) so I called up the kind folks at Peterson to get repair and shipping prices. I mailed it in from Canada. I would call periodically for status as the email with cost hadn’t arrived as they were pretty busy. I was told my unit could not be repaired and they would just send me a new one at the minimum repair cost. Great. I noticed that the manual was slightly different and perhaps my old unit had the metronome feature I don’t recall, but the new one did although the buttons were of the old design not what you have in your video, which btw helped me with the settings-so thanks. Mine does not change color (I tried) or the sound but it’s great as a go-to metronome and I have several including the old BOSS Dr. Beat DB-88 which speaks, and since that is out of production, I ordered a backup from Japan used via eBay. Also have the latest Korg metronome which does pretty much the same features.
When Peterson sent me the email invoice the shipping charge in Canadian dollars was equal to the repair. I paid it regardless but did put a call in to mention it. Just few days later my PayPal account had been credited as they had reversed the charge so I now had free shipping. Very gracious of them to surprise me like that.
Lastly. I plugged a mic into the guitar input and yes, I can sing and do the same vocal pitch exercises you mentioned. So thanks very much for that idea! Mike aka RD.

I was really excited about adding this to my workbench but the need for a "special battery" vs. the ability to use a 9v battery will be what makes me go with the Strobostomp instead. I've dealt with the rechargeable type batteries on other pieces of gear in the past, and although they're great when they're new, there's always the possibility that the particular model battery required to power your gadget will become more-n-more difficult to find (or discontinued?) after XX years. If the HDC had the option to be powered by a 9v power supply then it'd def be 100% Top-Dwag at this price point for sure!
You can power it from an AC adapter with a USB connector attached and the battery is user replaceable.
@@aaronshortmusic Yeah, but I've been burned a few times in the past with not being able to find rechargeable batteries after the model they power becomes obsolete when technology shifts, so I went with their Strobestomp HD instead. I figure the pedalboard format can be used on the workbench too.. 🤘😎🤘

It’s not just a great tuner, it’s a great practice tool as well...currently I’m using my phone as a timer and an old metronome thats held together with tape...so yea, I gotta check this thing out...well done!!!!

i just want a tuner to strobe my guitars, I have three different tuners and its hard to get my guitars strobe, is it easy to strobe a guitar with this tuner.

Enjoyed the review.. can the tuner display cents as well as strobe? So if a note was sharp for example it would tell you by how many cents?
No it does not. Strobe tuners just show the moving display and not the centers. It’s so accurate that it wouldn’t be worthwhile anyway.
@@aaronshortmusicAccuracy is one thing, but knowing how far off the pitch is, is also important. I play an acoustic 12-string guitar which needs to be compensated when tuning for intonation imperfections. Impossible with this tuner. Even to evaluate setup, it’s a huge missing capability. I love the tuner otherwise but this idea of only knowing when you are on the correct pitch is enough is shortsighted.

Thanks for the video. Do you feel the volume is loud enough for settings with for example students in a lesson environment? I find many metronomes to not have very good volume.
Hi Keith. I think so. If not you could run the headphone out into a small rechargeable speaker but it’s quite loud. I can measure the dB in one of my videos if you like.

@@keithhicksmusic I will try to include that in a future video but like I said if you have a small speaker to play audio examples you could always plug the headphone output into that as well.

Long had Peterson tuners, but your video convinced me I may need this latest iteration. Can you tell me if the metronome can do 6/8 - and odd time signatures - which I've seen someone say that it cannot?
