I believe a common issue is the bearings either side of the worm gear drying out. I had an irritating squeal from mine. Some light oil on the worm spindle cured it.
Try disconnecting the flywheel belt for the roof fans. If the flywheel is turning the belt and the fans are not turning then there could be some resistance.
Obviously much more knowledgeable folks commenting, and I agree it is related to the fans. I've watched twice, and it looked like one of the fan blades is bent. Maybe, it is striking the plate when the body is tight?
It's already been mentioned, but I would cut the fan belt. This should cure the problem you're having Richard. I've done the same with my 56 and it now runs fine.
Hi mate! Yes - I did just that in the September update video and now it runs like an absolute dream! Thanks for the comment though - those fans were just a pain!
First thing to do is take the fan mechanism out altogether, body back on and see/listen to the result. Obviously if no noise, then that mechanism is still causing a problem. If the noise persists with said fan removed, id look at the motor. Ive have this on a 50 (same mechanics) and a little oil on the shaft was the answer. Cheers Jerry
I will have a look at doing that, but it seems like BR Blues had the same issue and it's an easy fix! I'll give it a go. Thanks for the input though. It's really frustrating when you have a great looking model that just doesn't run quite right!
The noise is due to a seized drive shaft to the fan unit. I had the same, simply cut the fan drive belt and remove it leaving the fans in place so they look right. Should cure it straight away. I would also pop off the bogie gearbox covers from underneath, that rogue rust coloured material looks a lot like copper slip grease, not good for the plastics and will need to be removed and lubed with your oil set.
St Michael's Hill they are just clipped in, if it’s an earlier then it’s one tab each end, if it’s the later, which I think it is, then when it’s upside down you will see four tabs between the wheels, ease these out and it unclips. Go steady but quite straight forward. If you get stuck, shout. Tim D
Lynchwood Sidings I have tried cleaning contacts, bending the pin connections and aligning the pins, I have also used wire from pins to PCB board and it does the same :( I've temporary removed some wires now so it run correctly one way and if I go the other no lights come on.
@@stmichaelshill7421 ah well. have you tried a little drop of oil in the motor bearings? and remove the belt from the fans. moving fans are just a gimmick and arena visible really anyway...same with opening cab doors, totally pointless

I don't think the fly wheel is turning the belt. The belt isn't moving. As others have suggested it might just be worth cutting the belt.
Glad you got the 56 running a lot better.
Cheers mate! I'm so glad it's running well now - one of my favourite locos in my collection!

The fans aren't turning though so I don't think that can be it! I will have a check though! Thanks for the input though Anthony!

I hope you get it fixed!
Thanks mate!
I hope someone can give you some help. Unfortunately I have never owned one. Nice video, thanks for sharing. Dave
Thanks for watching Dave!

St Michael's Hill That’s great news, and a relief. She’ll be back in the good books! Cheers
I agree cut that fan belt, worst idea Hornby ever had was moving fans.
Thanks for the comment Scott! Feels like that's going to be first thing to try!

Thanks very much. Good to know you had the issue and fixed it. I'll give that a go! How exactly do I get the bogie gearbox covers off?

Thanks I'll give it a go!
Enjoyed your tutorial. I have a 56, which has not been run for years and cannot get the fly wheel to turn. Any suggestions?
Very helpful, I have a class 56 with a lighting issue, okay 1 way but when you change direct all lights on both ends come on :(
Is it running on DC or DCC?
@@tail_lamp7538 DC, Which i think maybe the issue, however other Hornby Class 56's on DC seem to function correctly lighting wise.
It might be that the contacts for all the lights are engaging with the body on?

Maybe lights are a loose connection and noise resistance etc.
Yeah the lights are just about the connections. I have fixed those nicely!
send it back and get a replacement
I bought it second hand a while ago so I can't send it back I'm afraid.

Yeah - I'm going to try cutting the fan belt this week!
Get rid of the fan unit all together
